Middle readers are not just for kids. This is the worth the read, whether you are the target audience or the grandparent of the target audience.
Where the Green Train Goes is imaginative. The fun inventions throughout the book reminded me often of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the movie) — only better. I enjoyed reading about each machine and contraption and the makers of them. (And the names were so fun!)
The best part, though, is this is a story of caring, respectful people. The children are kind, thoughtful, and compassionate. Most of the adults are lovable as well. :)
An underlying theme of grief runs throughout the book, but it offers so much hope — the kind of hope that is found in community. My favorite lines on that topic in the book: “‘And the thing about that is…sometimes grief just needs a witness. Sometimes it can be so incredibly healing for a grieving person to be able to simple say out loud: My heart is broken. I hate this. And to say it without fear of judgment. Without someone trying to fix them or talk them out of their feelings. It can be as simple and profound as that,’ Dr. Vespera smiled.”
Run, don’t walk, to get your copy.
