Good sketching skills is acquired overtime through constant practice. Here's a sentence that summarize the essence of this book: «People who can draw well do so because they think differently as they draw. As a result, they know what to look for. They pay attention to the right things. They see things that those who cannot draw are not seeing. Because drawing makes sense to these people, they have fun doing it, and they continually practice and improve.»

Wow. I'm in awe. What can I say?

It's for all artists, beginner to advanced. Richard E. Scott covers the basics in the most concise and memorable way, while inspiring you to sketch more often.

If you think you know the basics, please give this a chance. You might pick up a few things that you might have overlooked. I know I did. It has sped up my art process and made it easier in some ways.

It's a treasure I'll keep forever. Not only that, his closing was beautiful and as an artist, I can understand him. I love his vibe!

This book is exactly as the title states--sketching from square one to the more complicated, such as Trafalgar Square. And it is written from a different angle than most sketching or drawing books I have read, so things difficult before came to light. And there is a lot for even those who have had lot of pencil, or pen, or marker miles.

I have always heard great things about Richard Scott’s drawing classes when I was a Landscape Architecture student. After reading this book I know why. This is the best book on sketching I have ever read. Whether you’re an experienced artist or not, it is a great resource to understand the basic principles of sketching. Most importantly how to truly “see” without getting bogged down with unnecessary details and learn to use sketching as a tool of expression.

Highly recommended! The book is focused in its approach, well structured, clearly written, and beautifully illustrated by the author.

My one criticism is that the book assumes you know how to be a good student. The first chapter has a series of exercises, but otherwise there isn't a lot of hand holding. After reading the book, you will need to form a regular sketching habit, and use deliberate practice to improve each of the skills. The book's website has advice for this. https://www.sketchingfromsquareone.co...
