FIRST IN A NEW EDGE-OF-YOUR-SEAT SERIES!

Matthew Grant, a behavioral analyst with the FBI, is used to traveling the country to catch the people terrorizing it, so going to a place like Cove Creek, Iowa, is nothing he hasn’t done before. He and his team figure this would be an easy-to-solve case. Everything seems pretty cut and dry. However, once on the ground, they learn the case is anything but. Stymied at every turn, Matthew grows frustrated. The only positive in this whole mess is the attractive woman who works the front desk at the small hotel where they’re staying.

Rebecca Clarke thought becoming a widow and a single mother, thus forcing her to move into her parents’ hotel, would be the worst thing that could happen to her. She was very wrong. Someone is killing the men in her town, men she grew up with and considers friends. The FBI is trying to catch them and are taking up residence in her family’s little bed-and-breakfast. It doesn’t hurt that one of the agents is very attractive, and very kind to her and her son, though. But it’s too soon to be ready to date, right?

As Matthew and Rebecca grow closer, unable to fight their mutual attraction, the serial killer escalates. As the murders move closer and closer to Rebecca’s inner circle, can Matthew and his team work fast enough to catch the person terrorizing her town?

I loved Decoding the Heart by Stephanie Caffrey. The story was emotional, suspenseful, and kept me hooked from the start. I connected with the characters right away, especially Agent Marty, Becks, and Benji—they felt like a team I want to keep following. The mystery was layered and well-paced, and I’m already looking forward to what comes next in the series.

Matthew Grant is part of a Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) who are investigating a series of murders. From the fact that the men are all the same age, to the victims being killed with the same MO and dumped in the same place, evidence points to a serial killer. Matthew heads to Cove Creek, believing this will be another routine investigation, but what he doesn’t expect is to find himself completely enthralled by a woman working as a receptionist at the Noble Hill Hotel, where he and his team will be staying for the duration of the investigation.
Rebecca Clarke is a widow with an eight-year-old son called Benji. The last thing on her mind since losing her husband has been dating. Instead, she’s been helping work at her parents' hotel, making sure she can provide for her son. She doesn’t expect to be drawn to anyone, but when she meets Matthew, she cannot deny the attraction, which only grows when she sees how amazing she is with her son. But the killings haven’t stopped, and try as they might, the BAU do not seem any closer to identifying the killer, not till the murders come a little closer to home.

I thought this had an interesting premise, and I am always down for a bit of crime thriller, but unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. I think that I would have preferred a bit more focus on the investigation and the profiling aspect of the book, as it felt the romance took up quite a lot of the story. This is fine, just not what I expected and also not usually what I enjoy in my thrillers. Sometimes I found that the romance aspect of the book was very jarring when certain events happened from the investigation standpoint. Those things seemed pretty traumatic, and I think for me, it took away from the romantic atmosphere that was trying to be created. I’m also not a massive fan of insta-love books either, usually liking the romance to be a bit more slow-burn. It's absolutely fine that this wasn’t, and for anyone who does enjoy that in a romance, then I absolutely recommend this book, but for me, insta love just isn’t my favourite.
That being said, there were some really cute moments in the book, especially between Benji and Matthew, and the mystery as a whole was pretty interesting. I did think there were some aspects of the investigation where I had some serious questions, and wondered why the team made some of the decisions that they did; however, all in all, it was pretty enjoyable. I thought that Matthews' team were really sweet, and it was nice to have those moments where they were super supportive of him. I have had a look and apparently the other book in the series is out beginning of next year, focusing on Millie and Trevor, which could be really sweet. Looking forward to reading that.

I think this was a pretty good mystery thriller, and would recommend this to anyone who likes their romance with a side of some serious angst. The romance was fluffy, insta love, and the characters, though having their own pasts and demons, communicated wonderfully with each other. Definitely appreciated how much of a gentleman Matthew was. If you enjoy insta-love books, with mystery, and characters with troubled pasts, then you will enjoy this.

Decoding the Heart (Profiling the Heart #1) by Stephanie R. Caffrey

5 out of 5 stars

This is the first book I've read by the author. To say it captures your attention right away is an understatement. This was by far the best book I've read in a long time. I honestly think if you like Criminal Minds then this book will be for you.

Matthew gets called to a small town in Iowa. What he isn't expecting is to fall in love. Having a hard life led to him being a part of the FBIsl’s BAU. He's not one to open up to people expecting them to leave at one point or another. Now he's not only got one, but two people to love. The case is just getting closer to an end when he gets hurt. When he wakes to find who it is he says: “You’re a narcissist who gets off on being the most powerful man in the room. While you may have not physically abused your wife and daughter, you have certainly abused them emotionally. You are in the service industry because you love the attention it gives you, and running your own business gives you the power you crave. I don’t think your reasons for killing all these men rest solely on the fact they were sinners in pursuit of your precious daughter. No, I think killing those men gave you the power you craved. You killed Jaime, and it gave you a high you never knew you needed, and you wanted more. Then, when you found a perceived slight against these other men, you took it. You needed to kill again, needed to get that feeling again. That high. And if my genius brain is correct, after you finished killing those men and dumping their bodies, you would come home and wake your wife up to fuck her because killing those men gave you the biggest—”

Rebecca is working at her parents B&B when she meets Matthew the FBI agent in town. Her and her son live there so she can save some money. When she loses her best friend a year after losing her husband. When she finds out her high school boyfriend isn't the killer, but was the next victim everything goes bad. When she does find out who it is, she rushes to save Matthew. When she finds out her son is alright with her moving on she says: “I’ll keep that in mind. I’m not going to promise anything, since it’s still early, but I feel the same way. I think he’s a really great guy. And I’m glad to know you like him and are okay with me dating him. Or dating in general.”

Decoding the Heart by Stephanie R. Caffrey is a romantic suspense that keeps you wondering who might be the next victim for a terrifying serial killer until the very end!

FBI Agent and profiler, Matthew Grant is sent to a small town in Iowa where a serial killer is murdering men in their mid-thirties within the community. When he arrives at the bed and breakfast where he and his team are staying, he is instantly intrigued by the front desk clerk, Rebecca Clarke. Little does he know that the mystery surrounding the deaths might draw him into Rebecca’s orbit for reasons other than the fact that she helps out part-time at her family’s B&B.

Widowed, single mom, Rebecca is equally drawn to Matthew. But when the two discover that the men being targeted all have a connection to Rebecca, their growing attraction could end up placing Matthew in more danger than he’s ever encountered before.

Caffrey plants plenty of red herrings in the plot of the story, so I was never really sure my suspicions of who the murderer was were correct. In the end, I was pretty pleased that I was able to put together the clues embedded in the story to figure it out. But it still kept me turning pages to find out what might happen next. The romance also had a nice bit of steam, but I would say it was more of a closed-door romance. There is some spice to the interaction between Rebecca and Matthew, but not of the fly-on-the-wall variety. I found this to be a nice change of pace as it wasn’t really needed to keep me interested in the characters or the story. The scenes between the two protagonists, while fun to see develop, couldn’t hold a candle to the ones between Matthew and Rebecca’s son, Benji. As a secondary character he was one of my favorites.

If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, then I highly recommend you read Decoding the Heart!

What a read ! Just what the doctor ordered , literally 😂

One always thinks you’re safe in the small towns don’t you ?! Well you are till the BAU arrives 😉Matthew and his team head to Cove Creek to hunt down a serial killer that is killing men in their 30’s and he’s got them on their toes but they’ll find him

Rebecca’s husband dies just over a year ago and she is raising Benji on her own and he’s such a sweetheart and as young as he is he’s tried to step up and his mum’s happiness is his no 1 priority

Rebecca and Benji stay in a little apartment at her folks hotel and in turn she’s their night manager , I’m not the biggest fan of her dad he’s a real nasty piece of work 🤬
the moment the team walks in you can feel the tension between Matthew and Rebecca and it takes the team by surprise because Matthew is a bit of a closed book , just shows you everyone has an Achilles 😉

At a stage I actually forgot we were looking for a serial killer because I was so invested in Matty ,Becca and little Benji 🙈that is until Andy goes missing , he’s Rebecca’s best friend and I can actually feel my heart beating a little faster …

I had 2 people in mind as the killer but didn’t want to believe it of the one for obvious reasons so when my prime suspect falls victim I just had to accept to my shock and horror that option 2 was it , I felt sick to my stomach !

There were some really emotional me moments for me like when Benji encourages Matthew regarding faith and when Matthew opens up to Rebecca , man I was a mess 💔

It wasn’t all tears though , the tension has me on the edge of my seat and the budding romance was there to calm my nerves 😉I think it’s safe to say that all my boxes were ticked and I’m waiting with great anticipation for the next book 📕❣️

Matthew is used too trying the length and breath of the country, were the FBI is needed he is there, although his specialty is the BSU he is forever within bad peoples heads and trying to predict and catch them. So when he is sent to Iowa he reads the case and believes this is an easy case to crack, but once he is there things are not quite as straight forward as he first thought.

Rebecca has lived in Cove Creek, Iowa but things are not as they seem, they have a serial killer is targeting the men within the town but the FBI are in town now and living within her parents Bed and Breakfast, one in particular is charming and lovely towards her and her son, so as they become closer the killings take a twist and they are getting closer to Rebecca's circle and although Matthew and Rebecca are getting closer the closer the serial killer is coming.

This was a brilliant read the crime scenes, psychological aspects was written brilliantly and the pace of the story was set just right. The chemistry between the two main characters is slow burn and there is not just the rush of passion but the whole building of the relationship and what conflicts are in front of them is a added layer to the story.

The twists and turns of the story are played out brilliantly and the secondary characters add to the story, with the serial aspect adds to the connection of more stories of this team going forward. Can't wait to read the next book in this series and see more of the BSU unit in action.

Decoding the Heart is the first instalment in the Profiling the Heart series by Stephanie R. Caffrey. It is an engrossing small-town romantic suspense with plenty of mystery, crime & investigation, a serial killer, intrigue, tension, danger, chemistry, emotion, secrets, dramatic developments, and gripping twists.
Matthew Grant, a seasoned FBI behavioral analyst, is called to the seemingly quiet town of Cove Creek, Iowa, where a series of murders have left the community in shock. What appears to be a straightforward investigation soon turns into a web of mystery and danger, testing Matthew’s skills and patience at every turn. Amid all the tension, Rebecca Clarke enters the picture, a recently widowed single mother navigating life in her parents’ local B & B. Her quiet existence is shattered by the murders of familiar faces, and her chance encounter with Matthew sparks a bit of a complicated attraction. The novel skillfully balances suspense with slow-burn romance, as the budding relationship between Matthew and Rebecca develops all while the threat of the serial killer looms ever closer.
As expected from Ms. Caffrey, the story is gripping, with plot twists intensifying the stakes, while the interplay between the heartfelt connection and chilling suspense kept me engaged. And as Matthew and his team raced to catch the killer before more lives were lost, the story delivered heart-pounding action and emotional depth.
Bring on Book #2!
Happy Reading…

This is a thoroughly engaging piece of romantic suspense that successfully balances a murder mystery with a tender, slow-burn romance. The story follows Matthew Grant, an FBI behavioral analyst sent to the seemingly quiet town of Cove Creek, Iowa, to profile a sudden and escalating serial killer. Matthew and his team quickly realize this case is far more complicated than they anticipated, leading to mounting frustration.
The romantic tension ignites when Matthew meets Rebecca Clarke, a recently widowed single mother working at her parents' local bed-and-breakfast, where the FBI team is staying. Rebecca is trying to rebuild her life, but the murders strike close to home, involving men she grew up with. Their mutual, unavoidable attraction provides a welcome counterpoint to the escalating danger. Caffrey excels at building the chemistry between Matthew and Rebecca—he is kind and protective, and she is resilient and sympathetic—making their relationship easy to root for. While the romance develops, the mystery maintains a gripping pace, with twists and turns that keeps you guessing about the killer's identity and motives. This is a page-turner perfect for readers who love a good whodunit layered with genuine, high-stakes heart. It sets a strong foundation for the rest of the "Profiling the Heart" series.

Decoding the Heart is a gripping mix of suspense and slow-burn romance that kept me hooked from the first chapter. The small-town setting in Iowa gave the story a claustrophobic, eerie feel that worked perfectly for a murder investigation. I loved following FBI agent Matthew Grant as he tried to piece together the case while fighting his growing attraction to Rebecca. His calm, analytical nature paired beautifully with her warmth and quiet resilience.

Rebecca’s strength as a single mom added real emotional depth to the story, and her son, Benji, completely stole my heart. The scenes with him and Matthew were some of my favorites—they showed a softer, more vulnerable side to the hardened FBI agent. The romance between Matthew and Rebecca built naturally, with just enough spark to make it satisfying without taking away from the suspense.

The mystery itself was well done, filled with red herrings and tension that made it impossible to stop guessing. Every time I thought I knew who the killer was, another clue would twist the story in a new direction. It all came together in a way that felt both surprising and believable. If you like romantic suspense with heart, small-town secrets, and characters you can genuinely root for, this one is a must-read.

Decoding the Heart by Stephanie R. Caffrey is the first book in the Profiling the Heart series. This first installment follows Matthew Grant, an FBI profiler who is sent to Cove Creek, Iowa, to profile and help capture a serial killer. He and his team thought it would be a routine, small-town, easy case when they set up to work from a small hotel in town. The hotel is being run by Rebecca Clarke, who is the daughter of the owners. Rebecca is a school teacher, who is a widowed, single mom. When Matthew and Rebecca meet, the attraction is instant.

Matthew soon realizes that this case is anything but easy. The whole town is shocked that someone is killing these men, and Rebecca, like the rest of this small town, knows the victims and considers them friends. They soon realize the victims all have ties to Rebecca. While Matthew and Rebecca are fighting their attraction for one another, the killer escalates. Matthew and his team are hitting walls at every turn. As Rebecca and Matthew grow closer, Matthew could be in danger.

Caffrey delivers the perfect amount of suspense that will keep you guessing who the killer is right until the end. There is danger, suspense, and plot twists that will make your head spin. Highly recommend.

This is my first book by this author in which I enjoyed reading from beginning to end. This is a well written story where the author used details to make the plot stand out and give it a realistic feel. This is a story that is full of suspense as well as some romance added as well. A story about how something so simple could turn into something bigger than realized. Rebecca and Matthew are great characters that have great chemistry and attraction that makes their story easy to read. Their story is full of action and twists and turns that you won’t see coming. Someone is killing men in Rebecca’s town, on top of that she has some type of connection to them. Matthew and his crew are sent to find this killer which is how these two meet. Now there is so much more at stake then just finding a killer. This is a story you don’t want to miss out on. I found it to be fast paced and hard to put down. This is the first book in this series in which I look forward to seeing what is next for this author and series. I highly recommend this book.

Decoding the Heart (Profiling the Heart Book 1) by Stephanie R. Caffrey . I loved this book and I have found a new favorite author. I can't wait for the next one! It's the story of Matthew who is part of a Behavioral Analysis Unit who has traveled to the small town of Cove Creek to investigate a string of murders. They are staying at the Noble Hill Hotel which is a bed and breakfast type hotel. As the investigation gets deeper in they believe they are dealing with a serial killer. Rebecca is a recently widowed mom whose family owns the hotel and she works the front desk. She is devastated by all the murders because she knows quite a few of the victims. Having the Analysis Unit staying at the Hotel is kind of freaky but one bright spot is the cute guy that is super sweet to her and her son. The more in depth the investigation becomes Matthew finds out that Rebecca may be a key to the whole thing. Falling in love was neither Matthew or Rebecca's plan but it sure seems to be happening. Such a great romantic suspense.

As a true crime junkie myself, I immediately connected with Jorge and could see why he would want to be Matthew’s driver any chance he got. That opening hooked me and I hardly wanted to put this book down.
Matthew and Rebecca’s instant chemistry is amazing. Her son, Benjamin, is a wonderful kid that truly loves his Mom and wants what is best for her. Rebecca’s best friend, Andy, is the perfect support to her life and the best cheerleader a person could ask for. Honestly the rest of the people around her are a struggle, and so she really leans on Andy and Benji to keep her life balanced. That is until she meets Matthew and they figure out what it is going on between them.
Everything in Rebecca’s life is in turmoil - her home life, relationships, and work life, at both jobs. It seems like someone is determined to take away everyone close to her. Matthew is in town to find out more about the murders and help catch the serial killer; he also wants to protect Rebecca.
This was a great book that kept be guessing, kept me reading and kept me entertained. I can’t wait for more to come out.

This is the first book I have read from this author and she now has a new fan. I love a good suspense with some romance thrown in. This is the first book of a two book series called profiling the heart. I was hooked right from the beginning and you can help to fall for these characters as well. It only took me a few hours to devour this very addictive story. I can’t wait to read book number two.

Matthew Grant loves working for the FBI as a behavior analysts. He has seen a lot of cases. When he is told that he and his team is going to a small town in Iowa he thought it was going to be an easy case. When he gets there he realizes this case is not going to be easy. He meets a beautiful woman that is working at the hotel he is staying at. Matthew can’t keep his eyes off this single mom and her son is so cute. This case is getting really close to Rebecca’s friends and he hopes he can solve it before it’s too late.

This is the first book in the Profiling The Heart Series. This was a captivating read for me and as it contains 2 of my favourite genres, romance and crime and investigation. This book kept me turning pages from beginning to end.
Matthew Grant is an FBI behavioural analyst. When he is sent to a small.town to find the serial killer he imagined it would be a pretty straight forward case but things aren't quiet as it seems.
Rebecca Clarke is finding her feet again as a widow and single mum. She is aware that there is a serial killer on the loose, someone is targeting the men in the town. Men that Rebecca has knows for years, men that were close to Rebecca. Is there a connection there? Who will the killer target next?
As Matthew and Rebecca get close the killer turns their attention to the new man who seems to be getting close to Rebecca.
Will Matthew and Rebecca work out who the killer is before they strike again?
I loved this book and I can't wait to read more in this series.

It's a heartfelt and beautifully written story that blends emotion, self-discovery, and healing in the most captivating way. From the very first chapter, Caffrey pulls you into the protagonist’s journey—raw, real, and deeply human. The writing is both poetic and grounded, with characters who feel so authentic that you can’t help but root for them.

What makes this book stand out is how it navigates the complexities of love and loss without ever feeling forced or overly sentimental. Every page carries emotional weight, yet there’s an undeniable hope that shines through. Caffrey’s ability to balance vulnerability with strength is truly remarkable.

By the end, you’re not just reading a story—you’re feeling it. “Decoding the Heart” is an emotional triumph that stays with you long after the last page. Perfect for readers who crave depth, honesty, and a little bit of soul-searching in their fiction.

Decoding the Heart (Profiling the Heart Book 1)

This book did something that a lot have failed to do and that is to keep me guessing. I started with one, then moved on to a second and a third. Went back and forth between those two until the reveal, was surprised but not at the same time.

Rebecca and her son had my wrapped from almost the beginning. I just fell in love with them, they haven't had the greatest year after losing her husband. She is finally figuring out her new normal when her town is rocked by a serial killer.

Enter Agent Matthew Grant a member of the BAU. Not going to lie, he gave me serious Spencer Reid vibes. Super smart, good at his job, kind of socially awkward and of course handsome.

I discovered Ms. Caffrey just after she released her first book, was so excited to see a new release and already anticipating book two.

There are a sring of disappearances happening in a small town and the FBI has been called to investigate. Matthew Grant and his team feel that this case will be open and shut but it turns out to be more complicated than what meets the eye. Whoever is out there killing the men of Cove Creek, Iowa is cunning. His whole team is frustrated with the lack of leads. Rebecca Clarke is widowed and a young mother to a son. She lives with her parents and helps to run the bed and breakfast that is playing host to FBI agents. Matthew and Rebecca share a mutual attraction which seems to make the killer mad. Does he, or she, hope to have Rebecca for themselves? The main connection between all the victims seems to be Rebecca. But who is causing all the mayhem? As the sparks fly, the killer seems to be getting closer to their target. Will the FBI catch the elusive killer before they reach Rebecca?

I was instantly addicted to this fast paced thriller with romance.
Matthew works as a behavioral analyst in the FBI. His profiling skills are what has maxe him so successful even though hes young.
He follows the cases and this one takes him to a small town in Iowa. Instead of just finding the killer he also finds Rebecca, a single mom working at the hotel hes staying at.
There is instant connection and sizzling attraction.. but to Matthew's horror the killers victims all seem to have some connection to Rebecca... but why? As they become closer the killer advances closer to her inner circle and they are desperate to stop the killer before it's too late.
This is a story with many curve balls and you wont be able to put it down!

I thoroughly enjoy anything Stephanie R. Caffrey writes, and this new series is no exception! If you love a good mix of suspense and romance, you need to check this out immediately. The story follows Matthew, an FBI agent, who is sent to this small town thinking the case is going to be a breeze. But of course, it’s not! Rebecca is a widow who is trying to keep it all together and she felt really relatable. I was invested in both of these characters almost immediately. The mystery kept me guessing way more than I expected with each twist and turn. The suspense and romance are balanced perfectly, and the chemistry between Matthew and Rebecca I so well written. I could barely put it down! Trust me, you’ll be hooked from the start.

Matthew Grant was one of the best profilers in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. Their latest case has them in a small town where he immediately is attracted to Rebecca, a widowed mother of a young boy. As the investigation continues, the one common thread among the growing number of victims is none other than Rebecca. Can the FBI catch the killer before he claims another life? I could not put this book down. It had me hooked right from the beginning. I was really drawn to how the characters began opening up after the events from their own lives surface during the case. Most definitely recommend this one!

“Decoding the Heart” is the first book of the new Profiling-Your-Heart series from author Stephanie R. Caffey. In this book, we meet Matthew; a profiler with the FBI sent to a small town in Iowa to attempt to help find a serial killer that's killing men. As he approaches the bed and breakfast where himself and all of his team is to be staying, he meets Rebecca---the clerk at the front desk. He's drawn to the clerk and she is also drawn to him, but a surprising twist is that Rebecca could be connected to the murders directly or indirectly and could have a twist or two in it as well. This story kept me intrigued to know what happened all throughout it and kept my interest the whole time. The right amount of suspect, suspense, intrigue, and romance to make it a great story.

Decoding the Heart was a fantastic read! The author takes us on a journey with Matthew Grant, an FBI profiler and the team he works with to Iowa to catch a killer.
While the team sets up base at the Noble Hill inn; Matthew hits it off with the night manager, Rebecca Clarke. Without giving away the details, these two become entwined in love and the case.
Stephanie R Caffrey hooks you right away with these amazing characters, fast pace and wonderful story. This story kept me guessing until the end and I highly recommend this book!

I loved this book so much! It's a mix of a crime thriller (which is my favourite genre) and romance. It has everything I want in a book. Intrigue, humour, mystery and clean love scenes.
It starts off with introducing Matthew and Rebecca and then meeting with an instant attraction, then comes the murder mystery that seems to revolve all around Rebecca. Three quarters of the way through the book I guessed who the killer was and I was right yay. It has an awesome ending and is such a page turner. I can't wait to read more from this author!

This book is an exciting thriller that is full of mystery and intrigue from start to finish. I found it really easy to be pulled into this story. The characters were all relatable and easy to connect with. It was great to see their connection and to watch it grown as the book progressed.
The story itself was filled with so many twists and turns. The author knew exactly how to keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. I was never sure which way it would go next. This is a brilliant book that I would highly recommend.
