I thought I was straight until I saw him. Now my whole life has been turned upside down.

My life was perfect until him. It's been months since I saw her brother Jake under the full moon, and I still can't get him out of my head. He haunts my thoughts and dreams alike with his stunning perfection. That's why I had to break up with his sister.

I thought if I threw myself into my work the thoughts would go away. But now this hunky blue-eyed alpha is back, claiming I'm his mate, and I find myself unable to disobey his every order. But he's off limits, and I have other things to focus on.

There's no way I can admit that I have feelings for him, though. Especially when my ex-girlfriend comes running back, claiming that I'm her mate too. Between that, Kael's wedding to plan, remodeling the coffee shop, becoming the pack beta, and a thousand other things, I can feel myself cracking under the pressure.

It was all supposed to be a secret until I was ready. But then Jake announces to the entire pack that he's my mate and all hell breaks loose.

TROPES: standalone, gay for you/bi awakening, alpha wolf, light D/s themes, forbidden love, forced proximity, found family, strict roles, and HEA.

too much self hate

The amount of internalized homophobia the MC expresses throughout this whole story absolutely detracts from the romance. And then the LI basically outs the MC to EVERYONE and somehow the MC does most of the groveling? Allegedly because he didn’t communicate, except he clearly stated he wanted to keep things on the DL until he figured himself out AND he told his ex multiple times that he didn’t want to get back together. So unless these people were complete idiots I don’t know how the failure to communicate was his fault when it was a clear failure of understanding. Anyway this is one of those shifter romances where the Alpha knows who his mate is and is all dominant and knows best and lacks any patience or finesse in understanding his partner. Because this is single POV we don’t get much depth to Jake and we only know this connection exists between him and Leo because Leo tells us. And Jake tells us, but there’s not a strong emotional connection to be found in the text. Which basically makes this not a great love story.

Je passe la traduction affreuse !

Mon préféré des 4 🤩
Avec une petite touche BDSM comme je les aime, avec une bonne morale finale (grrr on ne fait pas le C-O des autres même si c'est pour dire à tous que cet homme t'appartient) !

Really formulaic without anything particularly interesting other than the romance and angst. Leo says some pretty homophobic things which don’t make sense when his best friends are gay. But I love angst and this was mostly angst.

They also never dealt with the fact that Jake is an alpha and they’re staying where his mate is a beta. He will never be alpha. His mother said his father was working on understanding which means that maybe him being alpha in his old pack eventually is maybe a possibility. But they don’t even talk about it.

I wanted more of a plot though. This was basically a contemporary with werewolves. The first book had an exciting action plot with murder and danger. This didn’t have anything except stress. There was a bit of a daddy kink but it wasn’t enough to really even be called that.

The editing was awful too. In one sex scene, the person would have to have been a contortionist to do what he did. (Jake’s dick was rubbing Leo’s balls while Jake was giving Leo a blow job.) He also in his early thirties when his best friend in the last book who graduated high school with him was in his mid to late twenties in the last book which took place the year before. (That book couldn’t decide if Kael was 26 or 28.)

It was also really sexist. Of course the only “she-wolf” (Oh my god what an offensive term. Are the males “he-wolves?” No. The assumption is a wolf is male unless you designate otherwise. Argh!) I lost the thread. The only female wolf main character is really messed up and horrible but that’s partially because they treat her like shit. The mother at the end is great but she’s female because she has to be. The father couldn’t be who the plot needed the person to be. The only other female is a waitress who’s a hobgoblin. Oh wait, Kael’s overwrought mother appears in a few sentences. She’s not a great female role model either. Four women, only one of whom is strong and reasonable and she’s only on a few pages. I don’t understand why people think that just because it’s a romance between men that there can’t be strong women characters. I think the majority of M/M romance books I read have this issue and most are written by women!

I’ll keep going in this series because I liked the first one a lot. Plus I’ve read tons of those shifter of the month trashy novels (novellas really) and this was a little better. Maybe.

Beta's Bliss
By Blake R. Wolfe

Leo's life is so busy he rarely has a moment to himself and every spare moment he does have his mind is busy thinking about his ex-girlfriend's brother. Being straight he can't figure out why he can't get Jake out of his head. When Jake shows up again the thoughts and feelings Leo has about him multiply and Leo starts feeling overwhelmed, but Jake is determined to claim him.

Leo is a sweetheart who just can't say no to anybody. Jake is a visiting Alpha who hides his sensitive side behind a cocky smile and attitude, but Leo needs him more than he knows. I enjoyed the book and the characters quite a bit. It was nice to see Chance and Kael from book 1 in the story as well.

Beta’s Bliss is a pretty typical shifter story, and while I liked it, nothing really stood out as unique.

Leo is constantly busy, but even in his rare free moments, his mind is preoccupied—with his ex-girlfriend’s brother, Jake. Leo’s straight (or so he thinks), so he’s confused about why he can’t get Jake out of his head. When Jake shows up again, Leo’s feelings become impossible to ignore. Overwhelmed and unsure, Leo struggles with his emotions, but Jake is determined to make Leo his mate.

It’s a decent read with some sweet moments, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression.

This was better than the first book in some ways (less typos, more steamy scenes), but also not as great in some other ways. I didn’t like how Leo denied himself and the bond because his mate was a man. For having two best friends that were mates and both males, he seemed a bit homophobic when it came to himself. I liked Jake overall but I was less than pleased when he outed Leo. That was not cool at all.

Leo was a people pleaser and tried to do everything himself, so I related to him on that level. In the past I’ve pushed myself to do more than I should mentally and physically, and it always leaves you overwhelmed, worn down, and not in a good head space.

Some typos and also inconsistencies:
- the coffee shop grand opening was supposed to be in 1 week and then it’s been like a week almost later at 27% and Kael texted to ask if the coffee shop could be done a couple weeks ahead of schedule.
- 51%: “My hole wrapped greedily around throbbing his cock”
- 67%: tool bad instead of tool bag

I thought we’d see more of the pack and Kael/Chance, but we really didn’t. After all the hard work Leo did for the coffee shop, wedding, etc., we didn’t even really see the fruit of his labors. The grand opening didn’t take place in the book and we didn’t see the bachelor parties or anything. Maybe 2.5-3 out of 5 stars?

Leo: “straight”, gamma about to be promoted to beta
Jake: next in line to be alpha but he’s gay so dad doesn’t want him to be

Other notes:
Leo was supposed to have a date night with Carah the night his phone died and he had Chinese with Jake before he had penetrative sex the next morning for the first time on his own volition (he though Jake was asleep). She messaged him a bunch while his phone was dead then caused a scene at the potluck.

I also really don’t like how much Leo pushes against the mate bond and the idea of being with a man. Like he knows how he feels around Jake, but he just refused to accept it for forever.

Jake outed Leo at the potluck.

I’m confused because I swear Leo broke up with Carah and that’s why she wanted him back but then Leo says she broke up with him while talking to their mom.

In the last chapter Leo said he came untouched for the first time but he already did during the first penetrative sex scene.

It has potential but the main character curse strikes again and harder than ever - Luke needs a... A personality transplant? Maybe just, say, a spine?!? I rarely see a character that can have EVERYTHING he wants and needs and gets in his own way in EVERY possible way. I guess mostly it's about being a people pleaser because I really despise what Cara did (kept doing) but Jaka wasn't as great as I thought and Luke made everything as worse as possible with all these little stupid choices. He's literally best friend to two gay guys and the pack accepted them, so what he does is represses and represses and deny. The number of times I wanted to slap that guy to see what is around him and take the few very simple steps to reach happiness... I know it seems easier from the outside but really, people come out and do more brave things with much worse circumstances and he has literally super supportive peopel and circumstances and everyone actually asks him to share and be honest about his state and all he does is... You know what, I am going to stop here, Kail or whatever was his name spelled had his flaws and I thought about a slap or two but he was mostly just a pessimist. All he needed to do was believe/hope. This idiot might be beyond saving. I thought having an annoying ex instead of a secret murderous one would be better, the opposite is true.

Lordy... I'm struggling to find any good MM romance stories.

I liked the start to this... the whole wolf having a really sweet canine reaction, but it quickly went downhill from there.

Yikes... the internalised homophobia so far has been OFF the scale 😬

& so far, the "romance" has been so incredibly juvenile. We know that they fancy each other because they always get a boner as soon as they see each other.
We must never forget that in Romance books, lust is always confused for love & Lordy... are they 2 boys who have only just started puberty?!?!? FFS 🙄

Jake is all over the place... one minute he's sweet (but he later confesses that it was a manipulation tactic), then he's "vulnerable", then he's cocky, then he's dismissive, then he's arrogant, then he's not interested, then he's bossy, then he puts on a Dom facade, then he's the one in charge & doesn't care about anyone else's feelings... 😮‍💨

I haven't finished it yet, but so far IMO, there was a lot of promise to the story, however the extremely toxic traits that both MCs are displaying are really detracting from the overall story & my enjoyment of it 🤷‍♀️

Wolfe seems to love his hot mess characters. Leo is insecure, in denial, self loathing and unable to tell anyone no. He spies his girlfriend's brother receiving a blow job during a pack run and this throws him into a downward spiral. Unable to accept that he's gay or at least bi. Lots of words, more than half the book is spent with him angsty.
Jake is an alpha, heir apparent to his pack. But his dad is just waiting to see if his thirteen year old brother is straight, then he'll disinherit him. Finding out that Leo is his mate, he alpha-aheads with a cockiness which causes poor Leo even MORE angst.
Wolfe throws in a dom/sub vibe and a younger character with an online Psychology degree.
The book was a quick read. Still undecided about the series. But at least the next book is about the younger psychologically gifted guy. Which should cut down on the angst and self loathing.

3.5 stars.

I'm enjoying this series so far. Jake and Leo are a great couple. The characters in this book are a bit more fleshed out than in book 1, and we get to see more of Kael and Chance, which I enjoyed. Leo and Jake are hot and sweet together. For a short book, the story/steam balance was great as well as the pacing.

Writing style is nice, but there's still room for improvement in regards to punctuation, grammar, and typos. As I mentioned in my book 1 review, I've read more recent works by this author, and it is getting better, but I've got to rate this book specifically.

I loved Cooper as a side character and am looking forward to his book and seeing a new creature added to this world.

I love a good bi-awakening or gay awakening and I really enjoyed this book. I did struggle with how mean Leo was to Jake for a lot of the book. It’s apparent that Leo really hates himself and is extremely confused about what is happening and his own feelings. I think at his core Leo is conscious of everyone’s feelings and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Jake has always know who and what he was and wasn’t really understanding the changes Leo was struggling with. The ending when communication starting happening really helped resolve and explain and understand how everyone was feeling and, in my eyes, helped make Leo a likeable character.
What frustrated me most about Leo was his own inability to communicate his feelings and his limitations.

Complicated Mates

Warning-this review is very subjective. Overall, the story is good and hard to put down. I just had a problem with the Jake character. I saw him as what other authors have termed an Alphahole. He was arrogant, pushy, and self-centered to the point that he expected everyone do what he wanted without any consideration about what they wanted. Other than the mate bond, I can't believe that Leo would put up with him. I was hoping that maybe he would get better as their relationship progressed, but it was Leo who changed to fit how Jake wanted him to be. I will still continue on with the rest of the series.

The second volume in this series did not disappoint. I already loved Léo's character in the first volume and I adore him in this volume where he discovers he's not so straight after all.
I loved seeing his evolution and his gradual acceptance of himself. Even if Jake isn't always very understanding...
A beautiful, hot and well-written story.

I might have enjoyed this one more than the first. What I've realized is I REALLY enjoy the atmosphere of these books. I've seen a fair bit of criticism of these books but I find them absolutely enjoyable. They're exactly what I was looking for. Simple, hot, cozy. Anyway, I LOVED Leo and Jake! Leo's POV was so fun to read along with. I'm currently writing from a perceived straight guy atm and it's such an interesting headspace to dabble I'm as an out and proud gay man. I think that's why I have soft spot for Leo for sure. And JAKE. Ugh. Tortured broody gay that dominates? I'm IN. Jake was such a perfect foil to Leo in every way. I am LOVING this series!

I enjoyed the book. The ending was okay, but could have been a bit more satisfying.

Also, some contradiction. Earlier in the book he said that he broke up with Carah, but when he was talking with Jake's mom, he said she broke it off. Also, the first time he and Jake were intimate, he "finished" without touch, but later, he "finished" that way again, yet said it was the first time and it has never happened before.

This is a pretty classic shifter story. I liked it well enough but it wasn't anything super special. If you want a book in between your next GREAT read and that isn't overly complicated, this is a good choice.

The character struggle was pretty good the solution was too easy/neat but I like the world this is built in so I'll be reading the next stand alone book in the series.

Great story!

The emotions and confusion developed by the author of the main characters show a good understanding of the many emotional and social confusion and conflicts faced by people learning to accept themselves. Truly enjoyed this book and the bonding and loyalty of the characters to each other and the wisdom given throughout the book. Well written.

of course it’s a HEA

It’s a good book, but so much angst! I loved the storytelling, character development, and the overall plot but all the angst made me speed read a lot of it. I just wanted to get to the part where they were in a good place. But I just read for a second time so obviously I like it.

okay Blake, I see you!

I remember reading the first book A WHILE ago and loving it. I loved this second one even more - I am one of those people where I read 3 books at a time (ebook, physic and audio) so I’m not going to try and name MCs ,names haha.

This has some good emotional grit, longing and indecision. It kept me turning pages.

Quick spicy read!

Another quick read that I enjoyed. There’s enough of a storyline to keep my interest as well as some hot erotic scenes with lots of details. This one definitely has more of a Dom/sub vibe but I know that will be a hit with a lot of people.

This was a really good character story. I was worried early on that this story would use drama to move the plot forward, but the characters were carrying this. They all made some bad decisions, but it was clear how they rationalized it, it made sense, and they all were chastised for it.

3 1/2 -4 ⭐️ I enjoyed this book. But I don't like miscommunication or refusing to communicate I can take care of myself type tropes and it's a larger part of the second half of the book. But in the end they did learn their lesson.

I definitely enjoyed the turmoil drama written. I do wish that some of the chapters were little longer. I understand a lot of publishing world thinks gays don't have a long reading lifespan but 199 pages went way to fast for me and I'd like see more.
