Deathbound drew me in with the stunning worldbuilding and strong characters and kept me hooked with the political intrigue, slow-burn romance, and the mysterious forces looming in Eynhallow. A must read for those who like their fantasy a little dark...and deadly!

“Have I not sworn enough oaths for you to know I will not go until you send me away?”

3.5 stars. This was really good, and a really promising start to this fantasy romance series. So many of my favourite tropes and micro-tropes. I don't think that I would describe this as romantasy, because the plot does get almost as much for page time as the romance. But the romance definitely is the centre point. Stroma grew up in a remote village, with an ex-knight father who taught her to be a skilled fighter. When the princess of the kingdom, Ythsie, has to start entertaining suitors for marriage, it's decided that she needs a new female bodyguard. Stroma, who has garnered a bit of a reputation as a fighter, is sent for. What follows is an enemies to lovers romance underpinned by palace intrigue, magical plots, and deadly courtships. I really enjoyed it.

Out of our two main characters, Stroma is definitely my favourite. I just have such a huge thing for lady knights, and although Stroma isn't quite a knight as yet, just a squire, she has all the mannerisms and noble mien and steadfast loyalty that is required of her. She's determined to do her duty in protecting the Princess. I adored her. She's strong and brave, while also being really gentle and even-tempered. Ythsie, on the other hand, took a while to grow on me. To be honest, she still has some growing to do. She's haughty, spoiled, mean, and while she does have the best interests of the kingdom at heart and all she wants to do is be a good ruler, it's obvious that she has a lot of learning and growing to do.

My biggest issue with the trajectory of the romance is that Stroma gives Ythsie all of her undying, earnest devotion, way before Ythsie has done enough to really deserve it from her. And what's worse, it doesn't feel like Ythsie fully appreciates that loyalty; most of the time, she just seems to take it as her due. I absolutely adore sapphic knights, queen and lionheart type of stories, and my adoration for those types of tropes is what kept me going with this story. But for me to really get into it, I want to feel like the person receiving all of that loyalty and love and trust is fully deserving of it. The nature of a princess/bodyguard relationship is always going to be somewhat imbalanced, but it shouldn't feel imbalanced, you know? I'm thinking of pairings like Gideon and Harrow from The Locked Tomb, or Evemer and Kadou from A Taste of Gold and Iron. Gideon and Harrow are obviously on different social standings and Harrow is really mean, but they fight like hell and Gideon never feels like a doormat. Meanwhile, Evemer just has the kind of personality that's perfectly suited to be a bodyguard, and he makes Kadou WORK for it. By the time he gives Kadou all of his devotion, you definitely feel that Kadou has earned it.

Which is what I was missing from this. Ythsie does nothing to deserve Stroma's loyalty, and for the first half of the book, it doesn't even feel like she's interested in earning it. Which is good, because I didn't want them to immediately go from antagonistic to friendly. But I didn't enjoy that imbalance, where it felt like Stroma was all in, beyond the necessities of her duties as a bodyguard, way before Ythsie shows why she merits that kind of loyalty. Ythsie is pretty spoiled and used to getting her way, so I was hoping that Stroma would be the person to help her start growing up a bit. Instead, Stroma was kind of a pushover for most of the book. Which can be cute! But it's not what I wanted from this dynamic.

So that was one thing I didn't really like. But don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed the relationship and everything about their slow burn romance. I know I just wrote a lot of words complaining, but only because I can so clearly see myself loving this even more, if some things were different. I wish that we had taken a little while longer to reach certain milestones, but bodyguard romance is absolutely my catnip. There's so much good tension and chemistry. Re my problems with the earning of loyalty and trust, Ythsie does eventually say something that hopefully means she's going to work to be worthy of Stroma's devotion in the future. Fingers crossed. And this is such a unique world. We've got different gods, a society where magic is taboo, an army of undead soldiers. I really liked the world building around the Deathless, and it looks like there are some interesting things to come. The mystery aspect isn't the most complicated, and I wasn't very surprised at the way things turned out. But there were a couple of surprising twists that I absolutely adore, and I can't wait to see how it changes things in the upcoming books.

This was an Audible original, and I have to say, it does read like something that was written for audio, and not always in a good way. There were several times when I felt like we were missing atmospheric description or maybe some kind of introspection when the characters experienced a big moment. I don't know, it just sometimes seemed like we would leap from one thing to another, and there would be nothing connecting it. If that makes sense? One example that comes to mind is But something I loved about the audio experience was that it was so immersive. Lots of little sound effects during fights or dramatic moments, ambient music at the start and end of chapters. Combined with the writing, which was mostly very lovely, it helped me get really immersed and lost in the characters. Music and SFX don't always work for me in audiobooks, so I'm glad it did this time.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Freya Mavor and Jesse Mei Li and I really loved it. The subtle Scottish accent in Stroma's narration was to die for. This was a really promising start to a series; I loved the characters and writing. (There were some times when the word choice seemed a bit too modern, and that would take me out of the story, but otherwise, it was great.) I'm a little miffed at myself for starting this series when there's only one book out, but I genuinely did have a good time with it. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for the sequels.

3*. I’m really not sure about this book. It jumped from one character to the other a lot. Not much happened in the book until you got to the the last couple of chapters. Not sure I will read the next.

My first DNF!!.To summarise with minimal details, the typically snotty princess just doesn't seem very nice. I can't really see why they'd like each other. for example someone dies and all she can think about is herself and them ruining her party?

2.5 stars.

I have no one to talk to about this book, but it doesn’t even matter because I would just be complaining. If I wasn’t listening to the audio book and was forced to read it physically I would never have gotten through it.

But since I was working while listening to this, it was a fairly okay way of entertaining myself while doing something boring (my job is scanning btw).

A couple things to note however, I’m not convinced of the validity of the two fmc’s who fall in love. Like?? Why do they even like each other. Let alone LOVE each other. And the plot was pretty confusing and not in a convoluted or crazy way, I was confused of where it actually was. Where was the plot?

Also I guessed that plot twist from AAAAAGES away. Anyways wouldn’t really recommend unless you’re doing something boring. But it’s free and on the Audible plus catalogue if you’re looking for something to just chuck on in the back for minimal entertainment. Will be listening to the next one to keep me sane throughout the work day.

Edit: Okay it’s not free my bad, you actually need a membership on audible, which I’m a crazy money waster so I have one 😝

Deathbound by Heather Palmer is a magical fantasy with mystery and an enemies to lovers love story.

I wasn’t expecting anything because this is my first time reading a Heather Palmer book.

As we know, with courts and crowns there’s always going to be intrigue and betrayal and for the most part the flow of the story followed the usual trajectory of a story involving Princesses and such. However, the twist rivalled a soap opera. I was definitely caught off guard which obviously added brownie points to the book.

I was delighted with the Deathless characterisation. The undead army cursed to serve the kingdom for 1,000 years as penance. The concept is so brilliant! Imagine a kingdom with undead soldiers at their disposal? It’s such a novel concept. Although, not they are not the main part of the story, like the deathless soldiers in the book, their presence lingers at the periphery of the castle as well as the story. Their presence ominous and sinister, adding layers to the story.

Truth be told, I haven’t felt eager about a story in a while. Most of my favourite books leave me with dread but Deathbound made me purely excited to push through. I can hardly wait for the next instalment!

Princess Ythsie is a spoiled brat to the nth degree, but she’s being forced into marrying whichever boring prince her parents take a shine to, so cut her some slack. Stroma’s just a village girl with a knack for beating the ever-loving crap out of people until she gets hired to be the princess’s new bodyguard. If you’ve seen ‘The Bodyguard’, you can guess how well their platonic employer-employee relationship pans out. Lots of fluster and thinly-disguised flirting. The palace is also filled with dead people cursed to serve the crown, and Ythsie’s the only one who can hear them, like an audio version of the creepy kid from Sixth Sense.

LOVED this audiobook!
Big fan of sapphic fantasy and this ticked all the boxes.
Loved the world, loved the magic system (while it was simple, I hope the second book gives us much, much more!)

Also not too much cringe spice, and lots of tension to keep you yearning.
(I sometimes find that spice is used as a lure to keep you interested in the book, but this felt like the perfect addition to the story.)

Narration was gorgeous, I loved their beautiful accents.

3.5 ✩ not my favorite original that audible has but it was still a pleasant surprise as a sapphic fantasy with the princess/bodyguard trope

the princess, ythsie, pov was rough to get through at the start; while the bodyguard, stroma, definitely had the more interesting pov and made the story easier to get through

the plot twist definitely got me but i’m not sure if i will read the next when it comes out

Deathbound was a great surprise for a random book I found on Audible. I really enjoyed the plot of the story and the tropes used. I think if you're looking for court intrigue, subversive strategies, and a wonderful twist, Deathbound is for you. There are some spicy scenes, but nothing crazy and even though the relationship drives the story, the frisky scenes don't define it. I do feel like the love just kind of came on and there wasn't a distinctive element that made the characters realize their love. I'm newer to reading Romance, so this may be a perspective of inexperience in the genre. Overall, this was a fun read and I am curious to see where the story goes. I'll most likely pick up the next book, but don't know for sure when.

Eh...
I want to preface this with: It was included with audible plus and is the only reason why I listened to the whole thing... Though I have 30 mins left and I can't imagine it will redeem itself in that time. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I really want to talk to the people who gave this book 4+ stars cause I don't see it.

The book had some potential but I don't know if maybe it never went through editing or no one actually read it before being released. The storyline is very hard to follow and the romance seems to come out of no where. Ythsie is insufferable and honestly has no redeeming qualities that would make me believe that Stroma fell in love with her. She is a typical bratty princess and she treats Stroma awfully.

*SPOILER ALERT*

I have a hard time believing that the FMCs were swapped at birth and when Stroma came to the palace no one was like "Dang you kind of look like the King and Queen". Also, from the description the author gives of Ythsie, she is blonde and light skinned.... Stroma is a contrast to her with dark hair and dark complexion... Did I read this wrong? (Please tell me if I read this wrong) Very confusing. Another thing that was confusing was when the king admits to Ythsie that he swapped them.. like what? First of all, He just gave up that information so easily like he held onto that secret so long and then folds? I would of believed that he got someone else pregnant and the queen never forgave him for making her raise someone other woman's child. He also reassures Ythsie that she is his daughter and everything else is rumors...? Which brings me to my next point. I honestly didn't understand what he actually did by the way the Author wrote that scene. To me it sounded like he forced Stroma's adoptive dad to let him sleep with his wife so they could have another child since the queen kept suffering from miscarriages. I don't know. it took a lot of convincing that I was interpreting that wrong cause that would mean that the FMCs are half sisters.. and that would be kind of gross. I have no clue and I am still hung up on the whole blonde thing...
Also, it felt like there was barely any enemies to lovers... Stroma just wants to do her job and Ythsie is throwing a tantrum. Then the next page Ythsie and Stroma are in love. I don't know the love scenes were definitely lacking and there was no chemistry build up and when Ythsie finds out that Stroma is the true princess, she just cast her out... Like Stroma was ready to follow he to the ends of the world.. and she does her like that. Ugh YTHSIE!!! Also, the villain... I feel it is so obvious that Gilly is the villain but the main characters are convincing themselves that he is not? Gilly has motive and is always where the action happens.. you are telling me your Spidey senses aren't tingling? Come on! Its like the author is trying so hard to misdirect the audience, when it is painfully obvious that the person behind everything is Gilly. Its like that one episode of Bobs burgers where Linda puts on a murder mystery show and tries to mislead the audience...
Actually, that's exactly what this reminds me of.

Lastly, This book is a bunch of different pieces of other popular TikTok books smashed together. The mysterious murders of competitors, the dark magic, the secret linage, the secret underground tunnel, the deathless....
Rings any bells?
sigh anyways,
Listen to it if you have a long commute and want something to be confused about and have to rewind several times to understand followed by many eye rolling moments.

XOXO,

A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The banter and flirtation between these two made me so happy. I love a book that is against all odds. With a protector who will do what it takes to keep their love safe. Even though this was a princess and a warrior they both had this spirit in them.
And the audiobook was really good.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I loved that Ythsie started off bratty and not wanting Stroma around. And the internal conflict she had when she started to develop feelings for her
Stroma's duty turning into love was so good to watch. She was always there watching everything. Even having to see her with other men.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK
I loved Stroma's protectiveness to Ythsie. All the scenes where she had her guard up just made me swoon.

MY FAVORITE PART- IF IT IS NOT TOO SPOILERY
So many great scenes. But when Ysthie first goes to the undead. And Stroma has to act fast to protect her. I loved that scene

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Really nothing.

Fantasy, Fish out of water, Bodyguard, Young adult(ish), Mystery

An interesting world and story, though it did drag. Overall, I enjoyed the story and all the characters, the world that they lived in and the Deathless (a cursed undead army of the kingdoms enemies who are forced to serve)

Stroma is the village brawler, trained by her father to be a cunning fighter when she is called on by the King to become his daughters personal bodyguard. I liked Stroma, she is the typical strong FMC that I love. A good fighter, a strong heart and morals, but with her own flaws. It was so easy to like her and root for her, especially when her life gets turned upside down. She doesn't lash out or get overly emotional on trivial matters which makes her to foil to Princess Ythsie.

While she does act like the pampered princess, I still liked Ythsie. Only through her POV do we really see who she is, the suffering she has gone through in her life and all the secrets she must hide. The main one being that she can hear the Deathless which everyone thinks is impossible.

Stroma is charged with guarding the princess as suitors are invited to the castle to vie for her hand, but things start going wrong soon after. I enjoyed the mystery of trying to figure out what was going on, and who was being these nefarious events. But the story did drag, and I found times listening to the audiobook where I zoned out and when I came back I didn't feel like I missed much.

The romance was done a bit better than most of the others I've read of late (though that's a low bar) but I still felt it needed a bit more spark between the two of them. One reason this went do to a four star was because the last quarter-ish everything was happening, things really started to pick up, and it was messy (for the characters) and I loved that. But it 1. reminded me of how slow the rest of the story felt (and I listen at x2) and 2. that the twists didn't have enough time to really hit the characters and we would get to feel the emotions through them. We discover the "villain" and all they have done but it didn't have the impact that should've had me gasping. And an important character is killed in the very last part of the book - and this should have a huge impact on them - yet because it finishes soon after I didn't get to feel their death and it felt glossed over. It wasn't something that could wait for book 2 (especially as it's not out)

While I do recommend this book, due to the stakes the book finishes on, you might want to wait until the next one is out.

I picked up Deathbound on a whim because the cover art seemed interesting and the premise is an appealing one - princess and bodyguard, working together to solve mysteries at the court. How could you say no to that? And, in this case at least, you shouldn't.

Listening along to Ythsie and Stroma as they navigate their journey at court and their developing partnership was entertaining. Both characters have solid point of view voices and perspectives, and it makes it so very fun to get to experience their at-times very different takeaways from the same event that they've just experienced. Their differences in terms of personality and tone, the things that they learn and take to heart, all of these small touches add up to a stubborn princess looking for a chance to prove herself as more than just a prospective marriage candidate to be bartered off and a confident squire who wants to prove herself as more than just a countryside brawler.

Their supporting cast is also likeable and nuanced but the story does stick to the 2 points-of-view which means that we only get to know most of the cast through their interactions with Ythsie and Stroma. This is not a bad thing but I did wish at times we could get more action with Stroma's mentor or with Ythsie's tailor. Something tells me that we'll get a chance to do just that in future stories. Keeping the story to 2 point-of-view characters also kept it focused while the proximity Ythsie and Stroma share throughout most of the book means that you get to sample some scenes from both their perspective, complete with inner doubts and conflict, but also from an external point-of-view. It makes for some very touching moments such as when Stroma observes Ythsie being saddened by a conflict.

Freya Mavor and Jessie Mei Li are wonderful narrators and do a fantastic performance. The story's pacing is smooth and I personally didn't feel like there were bits where it went too slow. Length was great too. All in all, it was a great audiobook to add to the collection.

5 fisticuffs outta 5, would listen to Stroma kick ass and flirt awkwardly & tenderly with Ythsie all along

I was drawn to this for the queer rep and Jessie Mei Li's narration, but it gave me so much more than I expected. In a way, I'm sad it's only available as an audiobook, but it's also one of the best things about it. It isn't just a narration of a novel—it's a whole audio production, with background whispers and screams and musical elements. It makes the whole story feel full and atmospheric, while still holding on to that book feel with its chaptered layout and internal narration, etc.

It's a whole experience, and Jessie and Freya add to it beautifully. Their voices fit so well and lend so much character. I already knew I could listen to Jessie for hours and that she had the acting talent to pull it off, but Freya is equally impressive (and gorgeous to listen to), making Stroma both likable and relatable with plenty of emotional depth.

The story itself is a stunning fantasy, complete with that fairytale setting, gorgeous heroines and contemptous villains, and misunderstood, otherworldly beings (the Deathless). There is constant drive and mystery. The inciting incident is Stroma being enlisted as Ythsie's guard, after all, setting up the suggestion of danger from the beginning. Following that, there is plenty of fighting, characters acting out of their mind, seeming under the influence of some evil force, multiple murders, shocking identity revelations, and a slowburn sapphic romance in the middle of it all.

It does what I love in these fantasies in not making the romance the only interesting plot, but still giving it enough prominence to have you entirely gripped. Stroma is a mannerly, humorous, strong warrior with all the makings of a knight in shining armour; Ythsie is stubborn, coy, and achingly vulnerable under a harsh, uptight exterior. Together they are at once fiery and gentle, passionate and joking.

My only issue is that this is only the first part of the story, and I need more immediately. Thankfully, the ending is hopeful enough to tide me over. I can't recommend this enough; I'm sure it'll be more than worth the wait.

For an Audible freebie, I wasn’t expecting much from this, but it was surprisingly decent!

Heather Palmer is capable of some pretty visceral and imaginative descriptions. I loved her ability to depict a fight-scene, or any sort of action sequence.

Stroma, one of the protagonists, is a strong fighter in a way that’s actually believable. Palmer lets a female protagonist be brutish and strong in a way that’s underrated in fantasy novels. For the love of god, take the bow and arrows away from these women and just let them kick ass with a sword. I loved Stroma.

Ysthie, the other female protagonist, wasn’t as likable. I love a bitchy mean girl in a book, but the redemption arc has to feel a lot more earned. I wanted to like Ysthie, but I just didn’t feel like she had enough character development for me to love her by the end.

The romance between these two was really exciting for me. We need more sapphic fantasy. However, because Ythsie wasn’t a sympathetic character for me, the romance didn’t feel quite as earned as I wanted. It was excellently slow-burn, however the tension didn’t ramp up effectively by the time they were getting together. I didn’t know why Stroma was so devoted to Ythsie by the end because their relationship was still so new (and Ythsie was still quite mean). But with more development, I can see myself loving this.

While the actual story arc is pretty slow and I was beginning to get bored, it ramps up near the end in a way that’s very engaging. The political intrigue gets intense with a twist I was not expecting, and I’m curious to see these two grapple with their identities and their love in the next one.

Very promising! We should keep tabs on Heather Palmer.

Not Bad!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

I picked up 'Deathbound' by Heather Palmer on a whim after seeing the intriguing title on Audible, and I’m glad I gave it a shot! The story follows Princess Ythsie, who is of age and in need of a husband. The plot gets a unique twist when the king orders Stroma, a female squire, to watch over her during the courtship process.

The worldbuilding in 'Deathbound' was OK, but I found myself wanting more detail about the Death Army, especially since they play such a significant role in the plot. The story starts off feeling pretty familiar—princes courting princesses, fancy dresses, and social expectations. However, things take an interesting turn midway through when magic, the Undead, and even murder enter the picture, adding complexity and intrigue to what was initially a fairly typical fantasy setup.

Ythsie, the princess, is portrayed as spoiled and irritating at first, which definitely made it hard to root for her early on. That being said, the author does a good job of giving us insight into Ythsie’s perspective, so we can understand why she acts the way she does, even if it doesn't make her any less frustrating at times. On the other hand, Stroma was a fantastic character—strong, competent, and well-written without the author feeling the need to constantly emphasise her gender, which I appreciated.

Overall, 'Deathbound' was enjoyable with some nice twists, though it could have delved a little deeper into its world and backstory. Still, it was a fun ride!

3.5/5

Free on audible or included in audible subscription.

I was looking forward to this title because it looked a bit different in terms of fantasy with an element of romance. That is my favorite genre.

Unfortunately, I think this fell flat for me because I couldn’t connect to the characters between one being super spoiled and the other being overbearingly stubborn. I guess it was supposed to be an enemies to lovers or maybe rivals to lovers? But the relationship felt sort of forced and they did more childish bickering than actual communication. And I don’t really like that kind of dynamic.

The book was slow and it took awhile for me to listen to it, having to break it up over the course of a few days. Nothing really happened until the end and then it just ends. I think it’s supposed to be a series but I’m not really inclined to read the next one.

I did like the difference in realities between the two fmcs and where they came from. I do enjoy that they are different from one another and they can teach something to one another. I liked the idea of the book and the political aspects of it as well. There were a lot of decent spots but it was less than boring.

Deathbound by Heather Palmer

This book pulled me in with its atmosphere and kept me intrigued from start to finish. It wasn’t a wild, all-consuming ride, but more of a story I wanted to curl up with and savor—a really good cozy weekender read.

The characters are what stood out most for me. Ythsie felt layered and easy to root for, and Stroma… let’s just say she had that perfect mix of guarded strength and quiet intensity that made me want to keep reading just to see more of her. Their dynamic had a nice slow build that never felt rushed, and I found myself smiling at the little moments between them.

The world has a darker edge, with enough mystery to keep things moving, but it never felt too heavy or overwhelming. Add in the audiobook narration (which was genuinely excellent), and it made the whole experience even more immersive.

If you’re looking for something intriguing, atmospheric, and a little romantic without being too intense, this is one I’d definitely recommend.

It’s ok if all you want is a brain dead listen, but also taking into account its very unrealistic, like to the point it’s annoying as you keep saying to yourself no one would do this, and really there wasn’t any time for all that. It’s like someone wrote down their literal fantasies.

Now that I think about it, nothing much happens in the story either. I suppose the whole story was meant to be about the love story / love triangle thing that was going on, whatever it was it wasn’t believable. I think it’s meant to show a more modern form of relationships, something more on the pan spectrum? Either way I didn’t believe them. Its only redeeming feature is that it’s included in the audible membership so I didn’t have to pay for it, and the narrator is nice to listen to.

First of all, WHY PENANT, I'm sure it'll be relevant for the plot later but I reaally wasn't prepared for it and i don't want to see him as a deathless he was so sweet and caring😭😭. Hearing this book made the story definitely so much magical, the mediaeval music and the whisper of the deadthless, along with the narration of the actresses was such a good experience, i had such a great time reading this book and i would also love have it in physical. The plot twist got me a bit confused for a while because i didn't know where the story was gonna go after it, but i definitely enjoyed the final and I'm soo looking forward to read the next one, I can't wait to see what's next for my girls and some family reunion I presume🥸

This is an Audible Original, so not available, as yet, as a book to read.

It is the start of a saga - the trilogy has all been bought by Audible - and, as with all fantasy, the world has to be established pretty quickly. Well, this may be Heather Palmers first published book, but it is a remarkable 'read'. The characters are relatable, the storyline is pretty standard fantasy but executed so well. I was gripped and when it finished I was disappointed to see that the next story was not yet available - and we were left on tenterhooks as is normal for fantasy sagas. Fingers crossed it won't be long before we are back in Eynhallow.

A village girl wins a skirmish against a royal knight and is called on by the king to become the perfect squire to protect the princess. With a daughter who has just come of age, the king seeks someone who is battle-savvy, discreet, and—most critically—not male.

But as the haughty princess and humble village fighter spend more time with one another, something far beyond protector and royal grows between them. When a conspiracy regarding the royal bloodline comes to light, the squire’s skills and loyalty are put to the test, and secrets within the royal court are enough to turn both women’s worlds inside out.

I really liked Deathbound. I'm a little sad to have to wait for the sequel lol Freya Mavor did an excellent job of narrating and kept me fully engaged.

I was a little worried about getting overwhelmed with names, courts, etc but it wasn't too much too keep up with. I liked the progression of Ythsie and Stroma's feelings. It felt like a natural switch for Ythsie to discover her feelings were changing-I just would have liked to hear a little more internal monologue from her about it. Maybe in the next book.

If anything, the narration is worth it alone to read this book. I'm excited to see what else Palmer writes!

I downloaded this on a whim but ended up really enjoying!
The narration is excellent and the background music and sound effects really set the scene. I found the 2 person perspective really interesting and helpful for getting to know the main characters better, both perspectives had very different vibes and while stroma’s chapters had a lot more going on I enjoyed the “palace gossip” side of ysthies chapters. Shes such an interesting character and surprisingly self aware.
The romance wasn’t too in your face, but I look forward to see their relationship progress in the next book!
