Book Review: Solomonic Pentacles: Wisdom and Magic for the Modern Age by Emrys Abner
Rating: 4.7/5

Emrys Abner’s Solomonic Pentacles is a groundbreaking synthesis of ancient tradition and contemporary innovation, offering a lucid and deeply practical guide to one of Western esotericism’s most enigmatic systems. As a reader with an academic interest in ceremonial magic, I found this book to be a rare gem—equally rigorous and inviting, striking a balance between historical fidelity and creative reinvention.

Strengths & Emotional Resonance
Abner’s modern reinterpretation of the Key of Solomon is the book’s crowning achievement. His 20 original pentacles for Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (a first in Solomonic literature) are audacious yet meticulously reasoned, bridging medieval cosmology with modern astrological understanding. The chapter on bending time (Pluto’s pentacles) left me awestruck, blending metaphysical speculation with actionable ritual frameworks.

The pedagogical clarity is exceptional. Abner, drawing on his background as an educator, demystifies complex concepts—sigil construction, planetary correspondences, psalm-based activations—without diluting their potency. His DIY Pentacles section empowers readers to engage creatively with tradition, a rarity in grimoire scholarship. The inclusion of pathworkings (guided meditations for each pentacle) adds a psychological depth often missing from historical texts.

Constructive Criticism
While the book excels, I noted minor gaps:
-Historical Context: A deeper dive into the Key of Solomon’s multicultural roots (e.g., Jewish, Arabic, and Christian influences) would enrich the textual analysis.
-Ethical Considerations: The book briefly addresses karmic responsibility in magic but could expand on ethical frameworks for wielding Solomonic forces.
-Visual Aids: Though the pentacle designs are described vividly, high-quality illustrations (beyond basic sigils) would enhance usability.

Why This Book Stands Out
Abner transcends the typical commentary on the grimoires genre by treating Solomonic magic as a living tradition. His work resonates with:
-Academic occultists seeking fresh hermeneutics for ancient texts.
Practitioners tired of dogmatic recreations and eager for adaptable tools.
-Astrologers exploring the outer planets’ magical potential.

The endorsements from figures like Benjamin Stimpson and Raven Digitalis underscore its scholarly and practical value.

Thank you to Llewellyn Worldwide Ltd and Edelweiss for the advance copy. Abner’s work is a testament to magic’s evolving nature—a dialogue across centuries that refuses to ossify.

Final Verdict:

Originality: 5/5 (Trans-Saturnian pentacles are revolutionary.)
Accessibility: 4.5/5 (Complexity made approachable, but assumes some magical literacy.)
Depth: 4.5/5 (Balances theory, history, and practice masterfully.)
Practicality: 5/5 (From the first pentacle to personalized creations, it delivers.)

A must-read for anyone ready to wield Solomon’s legacy with both reverence and bold curiosity.

A great way to introduce yourself to the Solomonic Pentacles. A primer if you will, that explains much more simply the complexities of the pentacles.

For those interested in Solomonic Magick, I would absolutely suggest starting with this one.
