Cori Nevruz has done it again! I first heard of her last year when I discovered a book she wrote called Dirty Laundry. I was instantly hooked and was thrilled when I was chosen to read her next book Making A Killing early. Both books are fantastic (you should go read them now!) and this book is no exception.
Alice and Mark black are reeling after the discovery of the son, Hank, in his room dead, from an apparent suicide. There were no warning signs that he might be suicidal and he left no note. Alice is desperate to find out why he took his life and she believes that his best friend Arnold may hold the key. Soon she starts to find little blue sticky notes, a favorite of Hanks, all over the place with notes she believes he is writing her from the grave. Arnold finally writes her a letter explaining that he's been grieving and that Hank was being bullied by a new kid at school. Finally, Alice has the name of the person she believes took her son from her. Can she put his death to rest before she has a complete breakdown?
This book was fantastic. I literally felt the pain from this mother oozing off the pages. As a mother myself, and someone who was bullied mainly on the school bus, this is something I have often thought of. I am very blessed to be able to homeschool my kids so they don't have much experience with bullying, but I would hope that if they were in school that I would be able to recognize signs of depression and unhappiness. I also do not allow my children to have social media, a place I believe to be toxic to burgeoning minds. Thank you Cori for writing such a sad and yet wonderful story. I look forward to more from you.
It starts with a gut-punch premise, a mother losing her son and unearthing his secrets, and then slowly sinks into a swamp of repetitive grief induced insanity and lukewarm mystery. The clues? Sticky notes. The suspense? Mostly waiting for something to actually happen. The twist? You’ll see it coming three chapters early and still have to sit through the world’s longest eulogy to get there.
It wants to be dark and psychological, but every time it edges toward genuine discomfort, it retreats into Hallmark-grief territory with a sad piano soundtrack playing in the background (it’s a sensitive topic I get it). The writing tries for haunting and lands on slightly heavy-handed. Still, you can tell the author meant well, like your aunt’s casserole that’s inedible but made with love.
Decent bones, soft execution. Readable if you’re in the mood for mild trauma and unresolved mysteries that don’t quite justify the tears. Mind your triggers for suicide and bullying.
A “can’t put it down” thriller but also a “I don’t want it to end” type of book. This story plants roots in your mind and niggles at you even when you take a break. The characters, setting and their relationships with each other and their own inner demons keeps the reader teetering between compassion, suspicion and perfectly timed bursts of laughter. Great plot, terrific characters and beautifully written. Don’t hesitate on grabbing hold of this one.
There was a lot of potential, but unfortunately I feel like it missed so much. everyone in this was so cold and heartless, it started out the town supporting her after the loss of her son, then everyone just being mean and avoiding her only months after her sons passing. her husband was terrible!! it may have made sense if there was more context, but honestly, I feel like more time was spent describing scenery than giving any context to people's thought processes. it was like everyone was an emotionless zombie aside from Alice. and the therapist was kinda creepy, I felt like she had more detail than the main characters. I will have to give a more recent book a try before I say this writing style isn't completely for me. but I did expect more depth with the characters and hope to see that in the future reads.
A great thriller, I was instantly pulled in. Definitely triggers of teen suicide and bullying. My heart broke for Alice, as she had to try and go through everything alone.
Thank you for Book Sirens giving me an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
I had never heard of this author before, but I love a good thriller, so I was up for this reading.
The book deals with childhood suicide, so there may be triggers for some people. Although it was definitely a heavy topic, I wanted to know what happened. I was shocked by part of the ending, I really didn't see that one coming. However, I feel like we were also left without some answers, but not in a way I wanted to be.
Overall a good quick read for lovers of thrillers.
I really thought this was a good subject for a book. I enjoyed reading it, for the most part. I am still not sure about a few things that happened, though that could be just me. I received an advance review copy for free. and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
