“What Happened on Roslyn Street?,” by Elle Lavendelle
This book was way different than I thought. I always have an idea that books that have these types of covers are just cutesy and cozy, but they aren’t always lol. It had the cozy amateur sleuth feel that I was expecting but the romance was way more intense than I was expecting, but in a good way. The romance was literally my favorite part, there was so much tension and chemistry between the two omg. I did think the plot took a back seat to the romance, but it worked well that way, at least I was happy about it. I can’t wait for book 2 and seeing what will happen between them. 4 out of 5 stars.
(3.5) I want to start this review by saying I enjoyed reading this book! It was a fun read, and I loved being in a supernatural world watching as Tobey attempted to solve the murder mystery connected to her best friend. I think that this book was a good start to what seems to be a potentially great series. However, I think we could've dove deeper into the issues between Tobey and Margaux as well as the mystery and sleuthing in general. I felt that too much emphasis was put on the romance when I think the mystery should've taken center stage. I also didn't love Tobey's way of sleuthing because she was just choosing to believe what she wanted to be true without really thinking about and looking into clues and suspects. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book, and I hope that there's more meat to the story in the coming volumes.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I had very few expectations going in to this book. At first I wasn't quite sure what was happening, all i knew was a character had died and her two best friends weren't really on speaking terms.
Then it really started.
I was sucked into this book and I didn't want to put it down. The characters were great, I liked the overly suspicious Tobey, the slightly full of herself Margaux and the very mysterious Caldwell. As everything starts unfolding you start to suspect people and then cross them off the list before deciding maybe you were right the first time.
I loved it. I'm slightly sad I'll have to wait a bit longer for more in the series but I'd recommend this to anyone who likes a little paranormal mixed in with their murder mystery.
This was an ARC Thank you Elle, this book WAS AMAZING I LOVED the relationship between Tobey & Margaux. I love the fact that she was non-binary and nobody really made an issue out of it. They just went about their day. The plot twist REALLY got me but also when you look back, the hints were there, but I was very set on my own evidently wrong theory. I still don’t trust Professor Cruz. I did not want this book to end I cannot wait for any sequels in this universe I need to know what happens next. I need more details on Poppy & I need Caldwell all to myself.

This is my first time reading a mystery-romance book and I have to say I’m thoroughly impressed. If you’re looking for a Dark Academia focused on mystery and maybe falling for a killer? … This is for you.
I won’t say too much but I will say that the plot twist really fooled me. But looking back all the signs were there and both Toby and I were too focused on the wrong things to see it.
✨The mystery goes beyond this book and reveals that something bigger is at play. The resolution is nothing short of a cliff hanger and I’m mad that I have to read more about this world.
💕The characters really stand out with their personalities (and I’ll admit, I’m very obsessed with Margaux) but Tobey is fun and spunky. And I love that they’re a non-binary character without it being an entire plot point.
If you want to get immersed in a dark academia workd with supernatural creatures living a relatively normal life (minus all the deaths of course lol) I think you should pick this one up!

I want to thank Booksprout for giving me a copy of this to review, and apologize to the author for such a late review as real life got in the way.
This is a story about a nonbinary main protagonist mourning the death of one of their childhood friends and deciding the death was a murder. So they enter the paranormal college to see if they could solve the mystery as obviously the police were too incompetent to figure out what happened.
Tobey, the protagonist, pretends to be a supernatural creature to get in, and spends most of the time snarking at their ex-best friend, and suspecting a random guy named Caldwell who keeps showing up at the most inconvenient times. There are vampires, witches, shifters, all living among society (something had only happened in recent memory), and apparently a lot of seemingly random bouts of murders that have been happening in and around this supernatural college.
With such an interesting premise, I was expecting a good mystery, good banter, and worldbuilding in an academic setting, with mature but grieving characters. What I got was a lot of teenager like emotions and drama, especially among the two ex-friends. Tobey was constantly feeling in the wrong and getting super emotional over her vampire friend, and the vampire friend just took it. And for some reason kept wanting to protect her despite them having a bad falling out.
They don't quite make any other friends, and we barely get anything dark academia here. Yes, they're living on campus and going to classes, but that's in the background save for one teacher's interest. Tobey spends weeks supposedly researching and investigating but nothing ever actually happens until they stumble upon other dead bodies and running into a charismatic young man named Caldwell.
Now, the banter between Tobey and Caldwell was cute. It reminded me a lot of Usagi and Mamoru in the first few seasons of Sailor Moon. But what got in the way of this was Tobey was very irrationally always suspecting him and making up wild scenarios, and then suddenly also having the hots for him and randomly flirting and pushing and then pulling away. He goes with the flow of this, admits his secrets and even till nearly the very end of the book is a suspect.
Tobey is not smart. Yes, they're grieving, but there was just nothing they did throughout all this book that was clever or interesting, and simply had people helping them out just because they were the protagonist. There was a lot of telling and not showing. And ridiculous miscommunication that doesn't make sense when it's set in the modern world of technology, just to draw out the angst.
The smut scenes weren't terrible, were nicely written but it just felt a little bit ooc for the characters' personalities at the time when they happened.
Obviously as this is meant to be a series, it doesn't fully complete the overarching mystery, but the main one of who did the killing of Tobey's best friend does get solved. In much too neat and random of a package. The killer was really irrelevant to the majority of this story until it was time to wrap it up. This is a complete pass for me.
Now, the cover is lovely! It gives dark academia vibes with the glowing cathedral like window and the characters in typical browns of college. Caldwell and Tobey look wonderful here, and definitely was a draw for me into wanting to at least check the book out.
I was really torn on this one for a few reasons, I really enjoyed reading through it, but I just found myself constantly waiting for something a bit more to happen. There's a lot of great potential with the setting and the plot, and there is a lot of room for certain aspects to be expanded on in a more meaningful way throughout the rest of the trilogy, but I personally needed a lot more oomph from the first book to really hook me in and grab my attention.
We follow Tobey's journey as they investigate their best friends murder. In a bid to catch the killer they sneak their way into a mysterious, paranormal academy to get up close and personal with the prime suspect. The premise of the plot immediately caught my attention - I love a good mystery and watching characters try to solve a crime!
That being said I really expected the murder investigation to take centre stage a lot more than it actually did. Tobey is determined to get to the bottom of their best friends murder, however they very quickly settle on the idea of Caldwell being the main (and pretty much only) suspect, based on what felt like very little evidence beyond a hunch. They really hyper focus on him being the killer and we don't really get any real explanation as to why they feel so strongly that he is the murderer. In general there wasn't a lot of actual investigation of the school, or trying to pinpoint any other suspects (even the investigation of Caldwell boiled down to a few fake dates to try and charm some information out of him).
The final conclusion did feel a little rushed in my opinion. Everything very suddenly happened all at once and then it was over and wrapped up nicely just as quickly. I was really hopefully for there to be a satisfying investigation and discovery arc.
I think the characters were all very interesting and there's a lot of potential for development in their relationships! Margaux and Tobey's dynamic was one I was very intrigued by and I'd be very excited to find out more about Margaux in future books! Caldwell was possibly my favourite character of the bunch, I enjoyed how grounded and level headed he was throughout the book and I think he was a good balance to Tobey who was a little more impulsive and chaotic at times. I enjoyed their romance a lot and once I shifted my expectations to understand romance was more of a central focus, I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop.
One small issue for me regarding the characters was their ages. They're written to be mid-late twenties college students, but the way they act and interact with each other times made them feel a lot younger than I think was intended. Tobey especially is quite naive and stubborn once they get an idea in their head, but its in a way that comes off as more of a teens behaviour, than that of someone in their mid 20s investigating a murder and I found myself struggling to connect with them and actually getting frustrated at some of the choices they'd make.
I am incredibly interested in the second book however, and curious as to where the story is going to go, and if we will delve deeper into some characters pasts and relationships. There is so much great potential and the setting has a lot of really intriguing mystery surrounding it, I'd really love to uncover some of the secrets that are still hiding in the shadows!
Within minutes of starting this book, I messaged Elle directly because of the impact it had from the very start. It is gripping from the first few lines and I knew then it was going to be a book that stayed with me for a long while. Throughout the entire read, I was messaging her with how I thought and felt and all my little unhinged ideas. This book is phenomenal. She is phenomenal.
Tobey is a character that I fell in love with early on. I am not non-binary, but I am bisexual. Seeing how they were portrayed with such love and care warmed my heart. I think reading about Tobey, through Tobey’s eyes, healed a part of myself I didn’t know was still broken. There was no shame for who they are. There was no judgement, no fuss. Tobey was able to just exist.
And, boy, do they exist. They are awkward and funny and always in the wrong place at the wrong time. And, yet, always exactly where they’re meant to be. Tobey, Margaux and Caldwell were the trio I never expected to steal my heart, but I love them so deeply. The range of their characters and their complexity had me falling for them with every turn of the page.
Caldwell is a beautiful character and I will defend him until the day I die. Even if I dropped in Elle’s DMs to let her know that my brain had named him Bob (since we don’t know his first name at the very beginning). He is complex and finds himself in a situation not dissimilar to that of Tobey. He is kind and thoughtful. He will do anything for those he loves and cares for.
I found myself absolutely in love with Caldwell more than once. The dates he creates. The places he takes Tobey. The way he accepts Margaux. I think his only fault is keeping secrets and not showing us Petunia sooner (I would’ve loved more of her 🐈⬛)
Speaking of secrets, Margaux was a character that I didn’t originally fall in love with straight out of the gate. But, she ended up being the type of friend I aspire to be in real life. She is fierce and brave. There is not much it seems Margaux would have a problem with doing and I love her for it. I love her sense of self and worth.
Margaux isn’t perfect. We know about the creepy dolls and the two decades old secret she kept from her friends. But, don’t we all have our quirks? She’s the one you want next to you when it all ends.
The trio works to solve the mystery of what happened on Roslyn Street, of what happened to people they knew and loved. And, just when I thought I had it figured out, I realized how wrong I was. WHORS is the first in the trilogy and I am {NOT} patiently waiting for the next.
The tender moments in this book. The setting and how it transfixed me. The discovery of self and forgiveness. The idea of finding love in the strangest place. It had me from the beginning and this trilogy will have me until the end.
Add this to your list if you haven’t and take a trip to Strode University. The students are dying to meet you. 😉
Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for a review.
On paper, this book has all the elements I would enjoy: a murder mystery at a private school for the supernatural and a human risking it all to uncover what happened to their friend with love and potential betrayal around every corner.
However that is not what I read.
Tobey is a difficult protagonist to root for. They charge blindly into danger (the confession in the car was so ridiculously daft I had to put the story down for a bit) and fixate on a single conclusion for the entire investigation. There is no investigating if their mind is already made up. As far as representation goes, she is non-binary but this is only demonstrated through word of god and the use of ‘they/them’ pronouns with no evidence in the text. I would have preferred it to be explicitly stated within the text given the setting of mostly the same as the current world but supernatural but others mileage may vary.
The inclusion of vampires and witches were the only supernatural creatures given any screen time. Demons exist and are mentioned but no consideration given to their powers or the potential to blindly be locked into contracts under the guise of romantic confessions. Even the dark academia label didn’t seem to fit, the story takes place in a university and there’s murder but the overall tone is light, the characters are unphased as a whole which makes any emotional weight difficult.
And the romance… it’s a touch of instalove but Caldwell is a decently sweet LI. The picnic date was adorable. There are some explicit scenes which at least fit the space in the narrative but the dialogue is generic ML in a romantasy novel so nothing really stood out about it.
I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint. I enjoyed the mystery and guessing who the killer was (I was wrong with every guess but it was fun guessing). I’m very excited for the next book in this series, maybe my suspicions will turn out to be correct(?) The real killer’s identity took me a little by surprise, they seemed so nice and turned out to be a total psycho, but what can you expect from a vampire? I can’t wait to find out if one of the professors is part of what I’m choosing to call the “bird mask club”, if you read this book you’ll know why I suspect a professor. I loved the romance between Tobey and Caldwell though I feel like Tobey could’ve trusted Caldwell a little more, I say that though I don’t think I would react differently than Tobey when they found him next to a fresh kill.
If you love your reads with mystery, vampires, witches, demons, etc. then this is the read for you.

What Happened on Roslyn Street completely surprised me in the best way. From the first chapter, I felt like I’d been dropped into a supernatural TV series—think CW-level drama with cozy vibes, a murder mystery, and just the right amount of paranormal fun. I absolutely loved the emotional journey woven throughout. Grief is such a central theme, but it’s handled so gently—moving from heartbreak to healing, and showing how friendship can become its own kind of magic.
The vampire club twist? Totally unexpected—and absolutely one of my favorite parts. It added a fun, fresh layer to the story that gave the whole town this quirky, supernatural charm. The spice was mild but so well placed—it felt natural and emotionally grounded, not just thrown in. And the murder mystery? Chef’s kiss. I loved how the clues were there all along, tucked into the story so subtly that the final reveal still packed a punch. It kept me flipping pages, second-guessing everyone, and loving every minute of it. I can’t wait for book two!
Thank you Elle for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

What happens when you mix friendship, vampires, and a paranormal university, you get a fun murder mystery novel mixed with a little spice. I wasn't expecting to love this story as much as I did. I especially love humans that believe that no magic or powers is not a barrier to fighting for what they believe in. Tobey is a determined young lady thrown into the paranormal world when suddenly she finds out her friend, Margaux, is a vampire and her other friend, Poppy, ends up dead. Instead of cowering into the corner afraid, Tobey dives right into the mystery to solve the murder. Tobey finds herself and a love interest in the process of discovering a darker side of her town and the paranormal world. Although there are some small editing errors, I could not put this down once I started. I enjoyed the plot and world building. It covered some heavier topics without being too dark. I thought the story was well developed and you are left wondering what happens next. 4 1/2 Stars 2 chili peppers on the spice.
A PNR murder mystery with shades of dark-ish academia? Sure!
This book begins with the funeral of Tobey’s best friend Poppy, and she has only one thing on her mind - vengeance. The supernatural world has publicly integrated itself into human society and Tobey suspects her friend’s death was caused by a vampire.
So she takes it on herself to enrol at a paranormal school by pretending to be a werecat. There’s just one minor problem - her main suspect wants to take her out (on a date).
To me, this book read a bit like Rory Gilmore goes to college with a sinister undertone. Tobey is determined but frequently spirals, talking herself in and out of things. The story moves quickly and sets up the next book of the trilogy.
There are a couple of spicy open door scenes and there’s some discussion of difficult relationships with parents. I would say the story is dark academia adjacent right now - it’s more that there’s an ominous aura surrounding the events at the college. It isn’t a hard read at all, and there are plenty of questions to be answered in the next book.
I love murder mysteries. I always try to solve the murder before the book ends. This one had so many twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting. Tobey, Margaux, and Caldwell are such interesting characters that left me wanting more. I love the world building that’s in this story and I would love to see it expand upon more in the second book. I also would love to know more about the main characters and their backstories. I’m very grateful to have been gifted a copy of the book. I highly recommend it for lovers of the paranormal and murder mysteries. And especially if you love dark academia.

This was so much fun! It reminded me of my Wattpad days (in a good way) - normal human girl goes to a school full of supernatural creatures like vampires, werewolves, witches, and more, but has skills none of them do. I quite enjoy these kind of stories from time to time, and Lavendelle writes such an entertaining one. Tobey and Caldwell's chemistry is electric, the murder investigation is intriguing, and the setting and aesthetics are brilliant. I was so sure I guessed the killer nearly off the bat, but Lavendelle has written a very Scream-esque mystery that kept me guessing until the very last page. I can't wait to see what happens next at Strode University!
A dark academia that sucks you in! I need to know what happens next, but alas, I have to wait for book 2 before I get any answers.
I really enjoyed this one once I had the chance to actually read it, and not just a single chapter here or there. I was sucked into the story and didn't want to stop reading it. Tobey was such a good character with all of their suspicion and nosiness. And then there's Caldwell, can I have one of my own, please? As these characters attempt to solve the murders that are happening, I couldn't guess who the murderer really was and was shocked when it was revealed.
Book 2 can't come soon enough for me to find out what happens next and if any of the feelings that I have are right, or not at all!
This was a fun read, and I loved being in a supernatural world watching as the characters attempted to solve the murder mystery. In the hopes of catching the killer of their best friend, Tobey sneaks paranormal academy to get up close and personal with the prime suspect. Since I love a good mystery, I immediately needed to know how it ended!
The characters were interesting and there is potential for really good character and world development. Margaux and Tobey's dynamic was one I was very intrigued by and I'd be very excited to find out more about them in the future. I really enjoyed watching each relationship develop.

5⭐️ for this ‘unhinged’ dark academia gem! Fake-dating a murder suspect? Check. Vampires in tweed? Check. Spice so hot it’s “criminal”? CHECK. “What Happened on Roslyn Street?” is THE book to obsess over—just don’t blame me when you’re screaming at the ending. 🔥
Twisty, dark, and deliciously unhinged, this book grabs you by the collar and drags you into the storm of secrets at Strode University.

‘I might be fake-dating a killer. The real question is… do I care?’ —Tobey, the unhinged detective of my heart. ❤️
there's not sleuthing happening here, just MC going around following their own opinions set on nothing concrete. The characters stumble on bodies and the answer is given just like that, also Mc is very difficult to like, because they act, frankly, a little stupid, and they stubborn set on their idea and only one idea of one single suspect that is actually her love interest ... the romance is cute and had chemistry, but it eclipses the already sparse narrative of the murder mystery. and the "mystery" just fizzles out with no climax.

i have to say I was happy to see that the MC was a demi character because honestly they don't get represented a lot. I'm demi/ace and I really enjoyed Tobey. Overall, it was a good story. I loved the mystery of it and the characters. And it was definitely a twist of who she was dating. I think this is one people will enjoy and encourage them to try it.

I really like this dark academic mystery romance because I found the plot to be quite intriguing and haven't read any books that are comparable. The plot of the book is more focused on the romance than the mystery, but both plot points work well together, especially since I really enjoyed reading the romantic part. Overall, I thought the book was great.

I love to read about paranormal stuff, especially things they have to do with academies and vampires love the mystery of the story. It was fantastic. The storyline was magnificent. The characters were terrific in the world. Building was amazing. I would consider it a must read and definite page Turner, especially if you like this gentry like I do and I would highly recommend it. Looking forward to book 2.

This book drew me in from the very beginning. The mystery combined with unexpected twists kept me guessing the entire time. I loved the growing connections between characters, but also led me to question if anyone can truly be trusted. That lingering suspense stayed with me throughout and led to a satisfying ending. I’m really excited to dive into the second book!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an E-ARC.
What a neat start to this mystery. There is a lot going on in this story that does a good job of setting the stage for what is coming as we are still waiting to find out in the next book. We get to know some truly interesting characters and are all set up for book two which I hope will resolve some of my questions. Nicely done.

OMG I loved this. I had a goofy smile the entire time I read this. It's just so fun. Probably not for people who want a gripping mystery. It's definitely more about the romance than the mystery but it's still a lot of fun. Tobey is a mess but I love them and Caldwell omg he's perfect. Sweet cinnamon roll, glasses, book nerd, owns a bookstore, has a bookstore cat, is a bit of a dom, did I mention the slutty little glasses? *drool*
I really enjoyed this book. I loved it so much that I was going to share with my teen daughter until I read the spicy bits and then thought I better not ;) There is LGBTQ representation which I love but it’s not plot altering in anyway and almost too easy to forget was there.

Who knew they needed a spicy, paranormal, sleuthy book in their life? I sure as heck didn't. I read the entire story in one sitting. I was guessing and second guessing who the killer was the entire book. In the end, I couldn't have guessed the ending of you paid me. I loved Tobey and Caldwell's slow burn relationship. I can't wait to see what they get up to next.
Interesting story dealing with the death of a friend and the lengths a Tobey,FMC, will go to find the truth. The FMC can be irritating but the MMC, Caldwell, and her vampire friend, Margaux, makes up for some of her short comings.
