Amelia Maddox, top female pilot in the country, lead instructor, and off-limits. So off-limits it’s almost laughable. But that doesn’t stop me from craving her.
With every sharp command and icy glare it only makes me want to push her more. She may be all steel and discipline but with each touch, and each stolen look we share I see her control slipping.
I don’t just want her; I want to unravel her. I want to see what she looks like when she loses control. She may have mastered the skies, but on the ground. She’s about to learn that I always get what I want. And what I want is her.
FIRST OFF! NO THRID ACT BREAKUP IM A CHEERING FROM THE ROOFTOPS!!!
Secret romance? Pilots? Spice, fun, tension! literally everything I expected and I absolutely ate this up!
This was a fun and quick read, literally read this in one sitting because I was hooked from the first page. Such a great pallet cleanser as well. Also, our mmc Ash?! OBSESSED! Where do I get one?
Our fmc, Amelia, love her down! A badass who knows what she wants and gets it! 👏🏻✨ I cannot wait for Noah's book 👀🤭
Such a fun and easy read!! I always thoroughly enjoy Haley’s books and this was no different.
I loved both MCs. Amelia was a badass commander for the Angels. And Ash was a rookie with confidence (and maybe a little cocky too). But I loved their dynamic together.
Overall it was a great story and super easy to follow!! Thank you Haley for the ARC!!
Characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Among our cast of character we have our FMC Amelia Maddox . She is a talented stunt pilot and Commander of “The Angels” flying team. Amelia is driven and tough on the outside with vulnerability lingering under the surface. Our MMC, Ash Carr, is a rookie pilot for “The Angels”. He is no stranger to the attention of women, but he’s knocked off balance when he meets Amelia. He is cocky and confident, but can’t help being mesmerized by her. Next we have our side characters, Noah, Nathan, Knox, & Nesta, as well as Ash’s parents, Jess and Jasper. Noah and Nathan are brothers and part of “The Angels” team. Knox is also a part of the team and close with Amelia. Then we have Nesta, the best friend/confidante of Amelia. Finally, we have Ash’s mother Jess and his father Jasper, he is a retired “Angels” team member.
Overall, I liked the characters. I would have liked a little more depth and detail, but that’s just a personal preference. I really liked Ash’s parents. They added a nice comic relief to the story.
Romance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amelia and Ash were a nice mix of spicy and sweet. The same as with the characters individually, I would have personally liked more depth and detail. Things happened a little too quickly for me, but it was still a cute, yet sexy romance.
Spice: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ They ratio of spice to just plain romance was probably about 50/50, but other than what I stated in the “Romance” section, that really didn’t bother me. I thought the scenes were good and showed the tension and attraction between the MCs.
Storyline: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The storyline was a really good concept and not something I believe I’ve read before. I don’t know if there’s many pilot romance books out there, but if you’re looking for one, I’d definitely give this one a try.
Pacing: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The story and relationship were just a little too fast for my liking. There were times that it seemed like the relationship was progressing, but I didn’t feel like I’d actually read it happening. That being said, I’d still recommend this if you like an easy and a little faster paced read.
Writing: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I guess the writing and pacing in this instance is kind of one and the same, but I did like the writing style. Ultimately, I just wanted more details and for things to develop a little slower.
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Overall, I thought this was a good read and sets up the series nicely.
This book is for you if like… — an easy read — no third act breakup — age gap (older woman) — boss x employee — spice — driven and successful FMC’s
Thank you to Haley Cook and Torch Lit Ink for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. “Afterburn” by Haley Cook will be officially available July 4th.
Afterburn is a fast-paced flyboy romance that makes for a quick and enjoyable read. While the story didn't fully take off for me, it had a solid plot and a sweet love story that romance readers will appreciate.
The aviation aspect added a unique touch, and the connection between the characters had its moments of charm and tension. Though I found myself wishing for a bit more depth and development, it was still a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
A good pick if you're looking for something light with military romance vibes and a straightforward love story. ⭐⭐⭐
I absolutely love when the characters and story make you feel so comfortable and happy! Haley Cook is able to do that with every book I’ve read!
Afterburn is a forbidden, age gap romance where he falls first for the stunt pilot. I absolutely love the way this was written. I’ve found that I truly love no 3rd act breakup and was lucky to have that in this book. This was such an enjoyable read. I love the characters, Ash & Amelia.
This was such an easy five stars for me. I can’t wait for more from Haley Cook! I definitely recommend this book for all to read!
This is my first book from Haley and omg! I don’t think I have ever loved an author more. My Top Gun loving heart was in all its glories. Those movies are my favorite and this book gave me all the pilot vibes. Afterburn was the perfect book I needed to get out of my funk. Ash and Amelia had so much tension and chemistry it was so hard to deny. Ash’s cocky attitude had me hooked from the beginning. He is so swoony and knows what he wants while Amelia is cautious and is a total boss babe. I love her! Thank you Haley for trusting me with Ash and Amelia! I can’t wait for the rest of the series!
Afterburn kicks off Hayley Cook's High Altitude Blue Angels Series with an exhilarating flyboy romance that’s both light and enjoyable. The story features Amelia "Phoenix" Maddox and Ash "Dragon" Carr, two stunt pilots whose chemistry is filled with charm, tension, and a deliciously forbidden element that keeps the pages turning.
While I craved a bit more depth to the characters, the plot is solid, and the romance is sweet and straightforward—perfect for a quick afternoon read. At under 215 pages, it’s a great palate cleanser between heavier books. The playful banter and dynamic connection between Phoenix and Dragon kept me entertained throughout.
Overall, Afterburn is a fun, breezy read that sets the stage for future installments. If you love a mix of military vibes and flirty romance, you’ll want to dive into this series!
Omggg how I fell in love with Ash Carr! I loveeee a pilot. Especially after watching top gun god knows how many times 🤣 I also live near an RAF base so having a book about falling in love with a pilot is just so good. Ash Carr what a man you are 💕 and Amelia being a CO was just the icing on the cake. I really really enjoyed reading this and can't wait for more!!
A quick read but very good. Steamy forbidden love between a strong confident FMC and cocky MMC, but both Amelia and Ash were really good characters lots of fun and tension throughout. A very enjoyable read with no third act breakup made up
Such a fun, top gun type romance with a strong FMC and golden retriever heartthrob of a MMC. This was easy to read, and had me entertained all the way through. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
I loved this story. Top Gun vibes, rookie flyboy, badass instructor, lots of banter and flirting.
Ash is a legacy, his father was a pilot for the Angels and was about to retire when Amelia joined the team. The author did a nice job of connecting her NASCAR series to this one through the Physiotherapy clinic Ash’s father owns.
Amelia is a phenomenal pilot, commander of the Angels, and not looking for love after a bad breakup. Then the Angels add a couple new rookies to the team and the dynamic changed. Being a part of a team can be difficult but being the only woman on said team comes with its own challenges; especially when you’re the boss.
I really enjoyed the connection these two characters have and how they grow throughout the book.
Amelia “Phoenix” Maddox, she's the top female pilot in the country, the lead instructor, and she's off-limits. She's so off-limits that it's almost laughable. But that doesn't stop Ash “Dragon” Carr from craving and desiring her.
Every sharp command and icy glare Amelia gives Ash, it only makes him want to push her limits more. She may appear to be all steel and discipline, but with each and every touch that Ash manages to steal, each stolen look they share, he can see that her resolve is slowly slipping away from her.
Ash doesn't just want her, he wants to unravel her, he wants to watch her unravel her. And Ash wants to see what she looks like when she finally lets go of her control altogether. Amelia may have learned to master the skies, but here on the ground. Here on the ground, she's about to learn that Ash always gets what he wants. And Ash has decided that all he wants is her.
Afterburn High Altitude Series Blue Angels Bk. 1 by Haley Cook. I love Haley Cook. This is the first of her books that I have read that wasn't revolving around race car driving or F1 and I enjoyed the change it was fun as we got to meet Ash's dad who mentions some of the F1 drivers he has helped and has had their own books.
Amelia “Phoenix” Maddox is our FMC. I love how she is not only this intelligent, strong, kick-ass, talented stunt pilot who is also the commander of “The Angels” flying team. She is amazing in her drive even if she is so tough on the outside but on the inside, she is sweet, kind, caring and so very vulnerable.
She's scared to let someone in again after her heart was left shattered one night by the one person who was supposed to love and protect her in all things. She keeps her walls up and refuses to let anyone get close to her again.
Ash “Dragon” Carr is our MMC. He's new to “The Angels”, this is called being a rookie. With his stunning good looks, even though he is a bit too cocky for his own good and he's way overconfident, and his talent as a pilot, he's never lacked for the attention of any women he set his eye on. But, when he meets Amelia, he gets thrown off balance. From the moment he meets her, it's like there's no other woman in the world, he only sees her and he's willing to do whatever he has to do to wear her down and show her that she can trust him and open up to him.
We even get some side characters when in reality feel like Main characters with how often they make an appearance.
Noah, Nathan, Knox, & even Nesta feel like they are main characters.
We also get to meet Ash's parents Jess and Jasper. Jasper knew Amelia as he is a retired member of “The Angels”. He was just retiring as Amelia was coming in and they had the opportunity to meet before he left and moved to South Carolina.
We get the chance to learn that Noah and Nathan are two brothers and they are both part of “The Angels” team.
Knox is Amelia's best friend and he was there when her life shattered. He also happens to be a member of “The Angels” team.
Nesta is not a member of “The Angels”. She is Amelia's best friend/confidante and we see and hear a lot of her throughout the novel
I loved all the characters. Ash's parents are so perfect together and they add just a bit of comic relief at perfect moments in the story. And I love how protective they are of their son and yet they show that they love and accept his relationship with Amerlia at the same time.
Amelia and Ash are so perfect together, they make the perfect couple. And I have to say that they have this beautiful mix of spice with a bit sweat mixed in perfectly. They each have their personalities and they have their own ups and downs and I love the way that Ash knows how to be there for Amelia just when she needs him the most.
And they have this great chemistry together and that works to their spice. The spicy scenes were full of spice and angst and tension and I just loved it. It was not there just to be there. It helped to move the story along and it helped to strengthen their relationship and bring them closer together.
I did enjoy the storyline, the plot, and the subplot. From Haley Cook this wasn't something that I had read before and in all honestly, I don't think that there are very many pilot romance books out there.
The pacing was steady and while everything moved rather quickly, for the length of the book itself, you expect that things are going to move quickly. I am sure that had the length of the novella been longer, the pace of the romance would have been slowed down and things would have felt like they progressed at a more realistic pace.
I just love Haley's writing style. For the length of her books, she puts as much detail in and she keeps the pacing steady even though it is a quick pace.
If you enjoy a quick and easy read, no final act breakups, reverse age gap (she's older than him), boss x employee, great spice, driven and successful FMC then this is a great read for you and I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys the above mentioned. And I recommend Haley Cook as an author. She has written so many great novellas that are worth reading and I can't wait to see what she writes next.
✈ “I don’t want to fluster you…I want to unravel you.” ♥
Ash and Amelia’s story was one I enjoyed a bit more than Noah and Olivia’s, largely because it didn’t fall into the same repetitive patterns and the forbidden element of their relationship made it feel all the more enticing. Reading the books in parallel (but finishing Rapid Descent first) also gave me an interesting perspective. Amelia had hinted in Rapid Descent that Noah’s insistence on Olivia being “the one” was part of what pushed Ash to go public with her. However, Noah didn’t talk about Olivia at all in this book, nor did he seem to miss her while he was out hooking up, which honestly made me like him less.
♥ “Because, whether I like it or not, Amelia Maddox isn’t just under my skin - she’s set up shop there, and I have no clue how to shake her loose.” ✈
The romance itself did feel a little rushed. Ash and Amelia were clearly drawn to one another right away, but Ash fell very quickly without really knowing her, which made their connection feel less realistic than I would have liked. Still, Ash turned out to be such an interesting MMC. On the surface, he was cocky and full of bravado, but underneath he had a surprisingly sweet and thoughtful side. I loved the contrast between the two, and even more so how his cockiness carried over into the bedroom; his confidence and dirty talk made those scenes even hotter.
✈ “I’m not pulling away. I just…I didn’t want to make it heavier than it already is.” ♥
♥ ”Babe, I’ll carry the damn weight if you need me to.” ✈
While I appreciated the intense focus on their relationship, I did wish the book had carved out more space for Ash’s camaraderie with the Angels. He alluded to it at points, but because the story centered so heavily on his and Amelia’s romance, it sometimes felt like they had little to no life outside of one another and their jobs. Even so, the romance kept me invested throughout. And I have to say…Knox caught my attention in the background. He seems like he’d make a fantastic MMC, and I sincerely hope he gets his own book down the line.

Title: Afterburn: High Altitude Series (Book 1) Author: Haley Cook Genre: Contemporary Romance Pages: 258
Rating: 4.5⭐️/5 (rounded up!)
“The moment you realize that the dark-haired woman you’ve shamelessly been flirting with isn’t just a pretty face.”
Ash “Dragon” Carr is the rookie with killer skills, too much swagger, and a last name that carries weight—his dad was a legend with the Angels, the most elite flight team in the country. He shows up confident, cocky, and ready to leave his own mark—until he meets his match: Commander Amelia “Phoenix” Maddox. She’s the top female pilot in the game, lead instructor this season, and completely off-limits. Cool, fierce, and guarded after a brutal heartbreak, Amelia’s not here for distractions—especially not ones with charm, talent, and a jawline like Ash’s. But Ash doesn’t scare easy, and the more she keeps her distance, the more he wants in. What starts as playful banter slowly builds into something deeper, and before they know it, their connection is soaring higher than either of them expected.
AFTERBURN is a quick read—Top Gun vibes, flirty tension, and a boss woman who does not mess around. Amelia is the kind of lead we don’t get enough of: confident, respected, and totally not here for distractions… until Ash strolls in with his legacy name, cocky grin, and way too much charm. Straight-up fire. The push and pull was so real, and it never felt forced. I loved that Amelia didn’t lose herself in the romance—she stayed strong, smart, and in control, even when things got messy (and a little steamy). The side characters—Noah, Knox, Nesta, and Ash’s parents—weren’t just filler; they actually added something to the story and made the team feel like a real crew. It’s fast-paced, fun, and has just enough spice to keep things interesting without overdoing it. If you like your romance with bite, banter, and badass pilots? This one’s got you covered!
A big thanks to Torch Lit Ink and Haley Cook for providing me with a digital ARC of this book!

Afterburn is book 1 in the HighA ltitude Blue Angels Series. Each story is an interconnected stand alone that can be read in any order as each book follows a different couple. As with any series, I always recommend starting at the beginning. This will help with small intricacies as you read the story and usually has some information about the next character that will enhance future books.
Why you will love this story: -Male and Female Stunt Pilots -Forbidden Romance -Age Gap -Cocky MMC -He Falls First
I haven't read a romance with fighter pilots who fly with a stunt team so this was such a fun surprise. The romance was forbidden but that only made the tension that much hotter. and the spice was spicing. I really enjoyed this fast paced read and it is under 215 pages so I read it in one sitting. It is a perfect read in between those intense books that you need a break from. A fun blend of banter, romance and wonder at how this book is going to have a happy ending when the Main characters aren't allowed to have a relationship. The fun and flirty nature of the MC's, Amelia "Phoenix" Maddox and Ash "Dragon" Carr really gave this book a light feel but the forbidden nature also gave you that "What is going to happen"feel. I promise we get our HEA and you will fall for these amazing characters. I cannot wait to see where this goes in book 2 because we meet a lot of potential future MC's and I need their stories as well.
Afterburn is a great, quick read, with tension that is off the charts. This book has all of the Top Gun vibes with a female pilot and I really liked it! Ash has the typical stunt pilot attitude that you would expect. Cocky, confident and ready to get what he wants and when he sets his eyes on Amelia, it's a tense back and forth between the two. Amelia is sassy, strong, and a female in a man's world so she is ready to take on Ash and his cocky demeanor. What she isn't expecting though is that Ash is going to crash through all of her walls.
As they work towards the shows they need to perform for, the tension builds between Ash and Amelia and you can feel the sparks flying off the pages of this book as their situation heats up. Their banter was really fun, but even better than that is the way that Ash steps up for Amelia when confronted with her past. He switches from cocky pilot right into soft cinnamon roll and I loved that for her so much!

Thank you to Haley Cook and Torchlit Ink for the ARC.
Ash Carr is a confident and cocky pilot who attempts to flirt with a beautiful woman, whose playing darts. She doesn't pay attention to his flirting and beats him in the game. He is starstruck by this woman, but doesn't realize that she is his new pilot instructor.
Amelia Maddox is the best female pilot in the country and is given the honor of instructing the pilot program, which Ash is a part of. She tries to keep a calm, level head when he is around but internally she is attracted to him.
"And the way he looks at me—like I am everything—is enough to make me fall apart, piece by piece, right there in his arms."
The sexual dynamic between these two is so satisfying when they finally give in to their urges. Especially when Amelia is the one who initiates it. What started as a secret hookup ends up becoming something more.
Although they are keeping their relationship a secret, could they evolve into something? She is his instructor and getting involved with your student is never really allowed. Does Ash feel something for Amelia or is this just a physical relationship? The first book in the series and it was such a cute and easy read!

You Had me at Blue Angels! This book made my heart so happy in ways I never knew it would!
It was such a feeling good read and one i absolutely DEVOURED!!!
Forbidden, secret relationship, age gap, a little boss/employee i gobbled them all up!
Ash is the rookie fluffy. And Amelia is the commanding officer! These two had an instant attraction. One Amelia tried to deny as hard as she's could. But Ash had already buried himself deep under her skin!
Their chemistry was absolutely insane! While there was angst and tension, a will they give in or won't they and of course him breaking down her walls and her trusting him. There was no 3rd Act Breakup and it was such a feel good read!
My only complaint is that i didnt want it to end!
From Race cars to Stunt Pilots, Haley you know the way to my heart! Loved seeing the Jasper cameo! 😍 I can not wait for the next book in the series! Because im hooked! 💙✈️
Secret relationships are so much fun to read and Ms. Cook has given us one that was entertaining, easy to get lost in and a joy to read. Oh, and she also gave us a workplace romance with a superior. Afterburn has it all and it's one book you don't want to miss. We are given Ash, a rookie flyboy with all the confidence and cockiness of a pilot, and Amelia the commander of the Angels flight team which Ash is a pilot. There is an attraction between the two of them but Amelia is still reeling from a shattered heart. Ash does not give up and is determined to win her over and make her his. When Amelia crosses that imaginary line, the pages catch on fire. The two of them try to keep everything a secret but one knock at the door and the cat is out of the bed, haha. The two of them were made for one another. I loved how Ms. Cook incorporated some characters from her NASCAR series.
Afterburn is book one of the High Altitude Blue Angels Series.
This was a hot and fun read. Amelia is the flight instructor and best female pilot in the country. Ash is a rookie with a bit too much confidence. Even though she is off limits, he still wants her and lets her know at every chance. We go get a bunch of push and pull, until the fire finally starts and the heat explodes off the page. I enjoyed seeing them develop their relationship together, as Amelia is hesitant for a number of reasons, specifically as she was burned in the past by an ex. She doesn't trust easily and I liked seeing her come out of her shell a bit and learn to trust again.
For those that like Top Gun, you will enjoy this one. It gave me those types of feels with the pilots and love story.
Let me just start by saying that the fact that the FMC was the one in a superior position of power at their job was thrilling for me. We always get the “im hot for my boss” trope, the boss being the MMC but not often do we get that with the FMC and i gotta say i loved it!
The romance is fast paced but still feels organic and natural but the book is short so its to be expected. The spice.. there are a few things that had me absolutely melting and even though they werent super descriptive scenes i really really enjoyed it! Over all this book is super cute, very refreshing and i loved every minute of it!
Afterburn ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Haley Cook Amelia and Ash Amelia being the Commander of the Angels and Ash being a rookie puts a damper on a possibility of a relationship. When Ash goes to the Welcome party for the Angels he sees a beautiful woman playing darts but doesn’t know that it’s Amelia AKA his boss. With having feelings for each other, can these two possibly have a relationship when it is forbidden? The author really set up the scene to draw you in and to keep you hooked until the end. Cannot wait till the next one thank you so much. Did an amazing job on this one.
A new series from Haley Cook? Yes please. I would have read this one based on the cover alone.
Amelia has worked hard to get where she is and she can’t afford to cross the line with the new guy on the team. Besides, her heart is locked in a safe. She’s been there an done that and doesn’t want to go there again.
Ash is drawn to Amelia from the day they met, before he knew who she was. She’s off-limits, but that just makes him want to push all her buttons more. He’s ready to put in the work to break all her barriers down and to watch her fall apart.
I was with Haley through her racing series and I am glad to be reading her flight series! When I started this book, I rolled my eyes envisioning a Top Gun retelling. But this was not that. It was a wonderful love story for Ash and Amelia. It seemed to be a reverse age gap, but it wasn't really told what their ages were. I loved that she was the higher ranking of the two. The way they came together was great. I loved that his dad knew her first.
Thank you for the copy, this is my honest opinion. Please be aware of any trigger warnings, as your mental health is most important.
I enjoy a book where the FMC is kicking butt and taking names. If you like Top Gun, you will enjoy this book. Now I’m ready to find me a flyboy and see if he can take me for a ride. This book was perfect. Definitely he falls first. No 3rd act breakup. Just good old fashioned boy meets girl. Boy makes a fool of himself. He tries to win her over. Definitely would make a great movie. The banter was good. The concept was original. The spice was nice. I’m looking forward to book 2.
This is the kind of book to read on a lazy afternoon, low stakes, the characters are likeable and the spice was pretty good, if you like a mellow romance with an exciting backdrop of stunt pilots, (very Top Gun coded) this is that book.
Any drama the story has is understated and resolved fairly quickly which I did appreciate. This does contain an age-gap, he falls first, and forbidden tropes. This is book 1 in the High Altitude Blue Angels series.
What initially starts off as a no strings attached arrangement between Amelia and Ash soon turns into more. While things are explosive in secret, they try their best to remain neutral as instructor and rookie at work.
But secrets are meant to be revealed….The push and pull between Amelia and Ash was so good and I liked how Amelia is not afraid to ask for what she wants!
This was a good start to a new series and I look forward to seeing the rest of the Angels fall.
I loved this book and I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. I was hooked from the very first page and fell in love with Ash and Amelia right away. I loved the chemistry and attraction that these two had and the banter between them was great. I loved watching there relationship grow and handling the curveballs that were thrown there way. I loved this book and I can't wait to read what she writes next.
Fast planes, faster pilots. This book lit a match that was not easily put out. Sky high theatrics can’t stop these two from their love. I loved the dynamics between Amelia and Ash. I love how he pursues her, even after he finds out who she is. That connection that they have is too good to pass up and it was so nice for the man to recognize it. I also loved the team dynamics between all the flyers and can’t wait for their stories to come.
This book had been exciting and fun from the first chapter. Ash had been confident and charming, and Amelia had been strong and careful, which made their interactions full of tension and chemistry. The pacing had been fast and steady, keeping me hooked without slowing down, and the story balanced romance and action well. By the end, I felt satisfied and eager to continue with the next book, impressed by how immersive and lively the whole story had been.
