Ash Morris not appreciative of opera but caters to his wife Flora's likings. He's with her at an opera and not happy but if she is he will endure. As they prepare to leave a storm happens. He doesn't want to wait so grabs his wife's hand and heads to the door. Only someone calls his name.Harlan Brown friend who likes to bring interesting cases his way and has one he thinks Ash will like. But being impatient he heads out again. Flora notices they are being followed. He thinks it's Harlan but Flora says no. When he stops to check it's the man who tried to keep him inside the Opera house.
Mason Thomas follows Ash and when he catches up he explains that his elder brother who's dying wishes to see him he and his wife go with him. They arrive at a beautiful house and go in. There they're given dry clothes then go in to see the dying man. After speaking with he and Flora leave. They talk on the way home. Flora gives him her perscpective which has him pause and consider her interpretation. When he gets home he gets a call from Harlan who tells him he's coming over. When Ash tried to brush him off Harlan tells him astrologically speaking now is the most auspicious time to visit. That piques his interest. So he waits. When Harlan arrives he starts talking about astrology in vague ways which makes Ash tell him that he just spent the evening talking nonsense with an astologer. Harlan mentions Theo Thomas. He worked for him for a year to learn astrology. They spent an evening talking about celestial events and Harlan's time with Theo Thomas. Then when Ash offers absurd suggestions Harlan leaves. But he asks Ash to take him with him to his next visit.
He realizes his analogy of Earth's celestial ballet is more real than he thought.
Theo Thomas an astrologer, the elder brother of Mason Thomas, wants to tell his finds about a catastrophe coming. So he arranges for them to be there in two days. Harlan goes with them. They watch the skies with Theo and he tells them what he sees. They have no clue as to what they are seeing other than a constellation. His telling them the starlights are merging make no sense. After his final request for Ash to stop it he passes. Ash, Flora and Harlan leave but Harlan gets irked at Ash and walks away. Ash and Flora sit in the car a while then head out hoping to find Harlan and give him a ride. They find him standing on a rock in the position Theo was last in. Ash is asked to join him and Flora gently says it won't hurt to humor him. Towards the end of their stance Ash thinks he sees the starlight come to a point in a starbusrt. Neither Flora or Harlan saw that. He needs to think of the event but when they get home he sees he has a guest. Mason Thomas has come to deliver a box that Theo had bequeathed to him in his will. How in the world does a deceased person return from the dead to leave an oral request then die again? So many questions with no logical answers. But now he has the box that Harlan had told him about. What's in it? What does it have to do with the catastrophe looming? Will Ash discover the truth or will he let his logical side sit back and do nothing?
A fascinating story with lots of astrology symbolism and information.
