I am the author of epic fantasy series The Faithful and the Fallen, Of Blood and Bone and The Bloodsworn Saga. I'm also a Viking re-enactor and enjoy nothing more than standing in the shield wall with my three sons, who are as passionate about swords and axes as I am (when I'm not stuck in my coat of mail; it's harder than it looks). I live on the south coast of the UK with my beautiful wife, three sons and my daughter, and an assortment of animals (at the moment three dogs, a horse and a lamb who thinks she's a dog). My dogs think I am their slave.
Malice, my debut novel, was published by Pan Macmillan in 2012 and went on to win the David Gemmell Morningstar Award for Best Fantasy Debut of 2012. That was a truly wonderful moment, as David Gemmell is a hero of mine and one of the reasons I write.
The following three books in the series - Valour, Ruin and Wrath, were all shortlisted for the David Gemmell Legend Award for Best Fantasy Novels of 2014, 2015 and 2016, with Wrath winning the 2017 BookNest Awards for Best Traditionally Published Novel.
My second series, of Blood and Bone, is set in the Banished Lands, the same world as the first series. Book 1, A Time of Dread, begins 130 years after the events of the first series. A Time of Courage, book 3 Of Blood and Bone, made the Spiegel Bestseller's List in Germany.
My latest book, The Shadow of the Gods, book 1 of the Bloodsworn Saga, will be published in May 2021. It is inspired by Norse mythology, Beowulf and Ragnarök.
A solid helping of mediocrity, loosely inspired by Norse mythology.
The book opens promisingly, boasting engaging characters (three POVs) and compelling narrative threads. However, it soon begins to falter, its once-confident stride giving way to a narratorial stumble. Dramaturgically, it wobbles back and forth without ever entirely collapsing—hence the three stars.
Following a rather exhausting middle section, saturated with violence that often feels gratuitous, the story builds towards a crescendo in its closing chapters. Here, some plotlines begin to converge, a few revelations emerge, and the groundwork is laid for the second instalment.
At no point, however, does this book warrant the artificial scarcity that led its hardcover edition to fetch over €400 on the second-hand market in 2021, having mysteriously vanished from Amazon listings (a similar phenomenon once plagued Miles Cameron’s Traitor Son series—equally middling, yet bizarrely still priced near €100 to this day). Thankfully, the situation has normalised, and one may now purchase a new copy for under €30.
This is not a work that will blow you away, nor does it bring anything truly fresh or innovative to fantasy literature or the sagas of the North.
The Hunger of the Gods – ⭐⭐
Barely a two-and-a-half; let’s call it a straight two.
This sequel is every bit as (if not more) uninspired than its predecessor, to the point that one begins to cease caring about the fates of several characters. Violence once again dominates the plot, but one increasingly suspects that the fantasy genre itself may be experiencing a sort of cultural collapse.
Please, do not be taken in merely by the “Norse inspired” tag. After all, Norse mythology, when compared to Greco-Roman antecedents, is itself rather bleak and tragic. Perhaps the genre now caters primarily to fifteen-year-olds.
Such tepid offerings make one long for the days of Robin Hobb, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Tad Williams. Meanwhile, we continue to await the sixth (of seven promised) volumes in George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, and privately hope he kicks the bucket so Brandon Sanderson can finish the job.
Where were we? Ah yes—there is little reason to immerse yourself in the Bloodsworn Saga. Read something older and better written. As for myself, one volume remains, a duty rather than a desire.
The difference here is that the first book, at least, offered respectable worldbuilding and introduced readers to a believable universe. This one simply throws reborn gods and monstrous creatures at the reader—goddesses devouring mortals and, at times, even their own followers. It all washes over you like water off a duck’s back. Not even a proxy patricide manages to stir emotion. The final cliffhanger? Mildly irritating.
Dear John (or should we say “Jóhnni”), we will read your third bloody book—you don’t need to dangle a main character in the jaws of an ice spider to keep us interested. We know he’ll be just fine by chapter two. It’s a cheap trick, John, the narrative equivalent of Sauron posting a “lost and found” notice for the One Ring in the supermarket parking lot.
Write better, John, and spare us the end-page drumrolls. Also, your chapters are shrinking at an alarming rate—soon they’ll be shorter than James Patterson’s (world record: 148 chapters in a 200-page book). It’s beginning to feel like an insult to the reader’s intelligence.
The Fury of the Gods – ⭐⭐
“DO YOU REMEMBER ME NOW, YOU BASTARD??”
This line more or less sums up the final volume of the trilogy. Though not without the occasional strong moment, the book is mired in relentless skirmishes and revenge plots. Tiresome, tedious, and entirely predictable, it commits the ultimate faux pas: reviving the central menace only to retire it again three chapters later.
It is frankly lamentable that these books are considered fantasy of merit, while making the worst possible use of every trope in the genre. The worldbuilding is dropped halfway through, the characters are either bland or actively irritating (and not in the well-written way—e.g., Gríma Wormtongue in The Lord of the Rings may be repellent, but no one would cut him from the story).
That said, when even the literary flatulence that is Fourth Wing—targeting teen readers with suspected cerebral atrophy—is celebrated as the past, present, and future of fantasy, perhaps this is where we’ve ended up.
You can comfortably skip the entire trilogy. Or, if you’re eight years old, read it and believe you’ve discovered Columbus’s egg (spoiler: it was rotten).
This was a very well written series with great world building and character development plus plot twists but I found it to be difficult to read in the fact that I'd get a "bogged down" feeling when reading and usually could only finish 1 to 2 chapters at a time, this may be due to each chapter switching character stories and points of view. Overall I would recommend to others but likely wouldn't re-read.
I'm rating this entire series in one review, because I think that John Gwynne hit consistent home runs with each of these three books.
Brutal, compelling, magical, and satisfying. I fell in love with these characters and their struggles in the harsh Norse-inspired world of Vigri∂. Also, great workout motivation.
John Gwynne proves once again why he’s a titan of modern epic fantasy. The Bloodsworn Saga is fierce, heartfelt, and utterly immersive a stunning blend of myth, magic, and battle glory. If Beowulf had a bookshelf, this would be on it.
The Hunger of the Gods ⭐⭐
Και ακόμα περιμένουμε να δεήσει ο Grrrrrrr Martin να γράψει το 6ο (από 7 που έχει τάξει) βιβλίο της σειράς Song of Ice and Fire και που ελπίζουμε να αποδημήσει μια ώρα αρχύτερα για να το ολοκληρώσει ο Sanderson.
The Fury of the Gods ⭐⭐

The Bloodsworn Saga is a brutal, Norse inspired fantasy that does not pull its punches. The world is soaked in violence, myth, and blood, populated by monsters, magic, and characters driven by vengeance and survival. The pacing is relentless, and the story often feels visceral and gut wrenching.
The three primary characters are well developed and compelling, and the use of multiple antagonists keeps tension high throughout the trilogy. That said, many side characters feel thin, even when given point of view chapters, and the sheer number of overlapping revenge plotlines can become exhausting and often feel intentionally drawn out.
Most character arcs are ultimately satisfying, but one major arc felt frustrating and undeserved to me, built more on entitlement and reputation seeking than earned growth. That imbalance slightly undercuts the emotional payoff of the finale.
Despite its flaws, this trilogy is immersive, intense, and frequently hard to put down.
