I have been a nonfiction writer for nearly my entire career. I had originally planned to be an elementary school teacher, but left after a year to become a newspaper reporter for Fairchild Publications. I covered men's retailing for Daily News Record, a men's wear/textile trade newspaper, which was the "brother" paper of Women's Wear Daily.

After my children were born, I switched to freelance writing—mainly in education—publishing book series dealing with editing skills, language arts, and standardized testing and creating teachers' guides, student activity sheets, and test passages. I also freelanced as a local reporter for the North County News, a weekly newspaper in Yorktown Heights, New York.

When I returned to work full-time, I became the promotion manager for the Yorktown PennySaver, a job I held for 20 years. After leaving the Pennysaver, I became a novelist. I'm the author of four supernatural thrillers: "DUST," "Peachwood Lake," "The Disappearance," and "Corsonia," and "THE SEA CRYSTAL and Other Weird Tales," a collection of short stories.

I live with my husband, Larry, in Yorktown Heights, where I am writing "The Touchers," an end-of-the-world series.

Review:

"Dust" is the first novel for writer Susan Berliner of Yorktown Heights, NY.

The story is simply written and has strong characters in Karen and Jerry. The creation of the 'dust' as the antagonist piqued my curiosity. The numerous 'accidents' that the 'dust' creates are inventive at first, but after the fifth one, it seemed a bit monotonous. The interactions between Karen and her ex-husband Jerry added some good humor to the story that I liked. For being a suspense type of book, I didn't feel any real climatic ending that scared or surprised me...it just kind of ended.

Overall, I think as a first novel the outline of the story was good. I just think a bit more intrigue/suspense was needed to really keep me interested in the story.

Give the book a read...see what you think!!

Karen McKay lived a nice, quiet life. She has a place in the Rock Haven condos. Most of her neighbors keep to themselves. Karen was unloading groceries when a mysterious dust cloud appears. This dust cloud is not your typical cloud of dust. No this dust comes in the colors of red, green and blue. The dust picks up a collectable of Karen’s and it violently crashes to the floor, shattering in a bunch of little pieces.

Karen thinks nothing of the incident…till later that night; she hears one of her neighbor’s dog barking. Karen goes to investigate. She finds her neighbor, Marion lying at the bottom of the stairs…dead. Karen calls her ex-husband, Jerry for help. Soon, other accidental incidents start happening to the other residents of Rock Haven. No one can figure out what is causing all these accidents. The only thing that ties them together is the mysterious dust. Can Karen and Jerry figure out what dust wants before it takes them out for good.

I thought the concept for this book was different in an interesting way. The idea that an unknown force could cause havoc and maybe death in the form of killer dust is unique, to say the least. While I did like the characters and the plot kept me intrigued, the only issue I had was that I had a hard time believing in the story. I would have liked the storyline to be a little more believable. Also the ending seemed rushed. Overall, a decent, quick read.

When Karen sees some different colored dust, she notices that its following her into her home. The dust picks up a porcelain ballerina doll and smashes it onto the floor. As if that wasn't weird enough, the next day Karen hears her neighbors dog barking nonstop. When she goes to find out if something is wrong, she finds her neighbor laying at the bottom of the steps. When Karen looks up, she notices the same dust. After these incidents, she tries to figure out how to stop sadistic dust from wreaking more havoc.

This is an entertaining book that is not your typical supernatural book. Susan is a talented story-teller who has a very unique style that is unlike anything I've ever read before.

I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the characters and the story plot. it was well played out and had things you would never suspect. The idea of Dust being a enemy is just outrageous and wonderful! Dust was well worth the read. It was a little quick to read but I really enjoyed it and I feel like it could almost be a sequel later on. I hope to read more of Susan's things in the near future.

Some books are much better a second time around.

Some books are meant to be read more than just once. I enjoyed Dust over 3 years ago when I first purchased it, but going through my library something compelled me to read it a second time. I really enjoyed it more the second time around.
