K.L. Phelps never wanted to be a cop, fireman or baseball player. He fell in love with books at a very early age and (aside from the summer of 1977 when he wanted to be Luke Skywalker) he never wanted to be anything other than a writer. Somehow he took a left when he should have gone right (or write) and spent 17+ years as an oncology nurse. He is now back to pursuing this childhood dream. Thriller, suspense, mysteries, paranormal, humor/comedy, there are very few genres that don't interest him and he intends to take a crack at them all.

I got nearly halfway through this book. I really liked some of the writing. But I didn't care for some of the characters. I thought the writer was trying to put a foot into too many genres, and with that many feet he was bound to trip up and make the book too long (for my liking). A main storyline was developing but I have too many books in my TBR list to bother staying for the journey.

Abrupt end with no conclusion

The concept of the story was fun and entertaining, but the story fell short of expectations. The story felt like you had jumped in the middle not the beginning yet it was supposed to be the first in the series. The story jumped around and parts of the story seemed superficial and in significant filler. The ending was abrupt without a complete conclusion, leaving the read to wonder what if any point there was in reading the story. What happened to the people in the commas.... did they recover die divorce

I was looking for something similar to the Kat Makris series, which is a series of Greek mafia mystery novels that are hilarious. I found... this. I liked it enough to read the next book, which I have at the time of writing this review. It wasn't awful, but I find the world building lacking and the main character childish and irritating. Honestly, I just can't recommend this. 3 stars.

Middling. My curiosity was piqued because that's how I am not because the writing was amazing.

I read Mind If I Come In by K. L. Phelps to fulfill the prompt of “A book by an author with the same first or last name as you” for the 2018 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge.

Katrina Parker returned to Houston from Las Vegas an amnesiac widow who can remember neither her wedding, nor her husband’s death, and possessing a startling ability to enter the minds of comatose people.

Oh, and she has an amnesiac vampire housemate as well.

As you might imagine, this is a bit fantastical with comedy/mystery elements.

I thought the main mystery was too easily solved, and there were too many subplots that were raised and left unresolved (no doubt setting the stage for future books in the series, but there were still way too many of them).

Also, what kind of turtle is Snappy? Or is he really a tortoise since he spends so much time out of water? Where are his heat and UVB lamps? Inquiring minds want to know.

There were a few spelling/grammar issues that were distracting. Using “who’s” instead of “whose,” “skies” instead of “sky’s,” and “loafs” instead of “loaves,” just to point out a few.

Even though the story didn’t take itself too seriously (and neither should you), it was okay if you need a light, humorous read

The concept is cool and the writing is decent and overall it was entertaining but I had a few issues with it. First, it was way too long for what it accomplished. The actual plot was drawn out way longer than it needed to be. The rest of the book was filled with fluff filler, some of which was cute but after a while got to be too much. Second, some things about Kat irritated me— her “quirks” (like hating all vegetables and refusing to charge her phone or wash her dishes) were cute at first but then began to grate, but that may be because the book dragged a bit. Third, I felt like I was walking into the series having missed the first book. But nope. I checked. This IS the first book. So many references were made to what happened in Vegas and little bits were revealed here and there (very little bits), but never enough to fill in the gaps and it left me feeling like I was missing something. Very frustrating. Despite these flaws, there is promise for the series. Not sure if I will continue with it just yet, though.

I absolutely loved this book and quickly read the next and am now in search for the 3rd. This book is witty, fun, well written, and just un put downable (sorry for the improper English). I LOVE the main character of this book and can only imagine what she is like! For one thing, this girl sure can eat, pass out at the flip of a nickel, and drink a diet coke like there is no tomorrow! She has a funny little pet that I just adore. A tiny turtle that seems to communicate to her somehow (it made me re-think my little European box turtles hisses and squeaks that is for sure). A couple of hunky sounding men that seem to have her back even though she is a bit wacky, and a best friend that is smart and can take care of her in a pinch. This story has it all laughs......(there were a couple of places I laughed so hard I got tears in my eyes and my husband wanted in on the joke) mystery, ghosts, bad guys, disturbing neighbors, over protective parents (with a secret of their own), a cute little turtle, and just plenty of fun. I can't wait to read the next chapter in this characters life, and I am so curious as to what went down in Vegas that made her this way!

It was a slow start. Weak unbelievable characters, constant reminders of previous events (this is the first in the series). It had a good storyline tho and picked up at the half way point. The scenes and action were well written. I will read the next just to see how this series pans out.

It felt like a pilot episode of a new series, you know, they aren't always that great but you can see the potential in the material. Which makes you want to give it a chance and see what the next one will bring. This is exactly how I felt about this book.

The book leans more to introducing the characters and not necessarily well. Kat - whom the story is built around - apparently went to Vegas for... I really don't know how long as the book didn't make it very clear, where she got married, widowed and into some unaddressed problems (which may or may not be zeroed in on in later books). She returned home to Texas with what basically amounts to amnesia of her time there. She wears a locket given to her by her late husband, whom she knows she loved and randomly touches it as a reminder of a time she doesn't remember, along with a house he left her.

He also somehow gave her the gift of communicating with people who are in a coma. There is her bodyguard/room-mate/vampire who for unknown reasons also doesn't remember his past but whom she somehow met in Vegas. Then there is Vegas detective who worked her case, a giant, that followed her from Vegas and now works in her town. Pour in her best friend, Helen, basically drop-dead gorgeous with a brilliant medical career of some form.

Now that we pretty much know the characters, we add the a coma patient, brought from Vegas to Houston so that Kat can 'talk' to her to find out why she is in the coma. The plot is decent. Even though, if you read a lot of mystery books you can easily tell who the culprit is.

My biggest problem with the book is that beyond Kat loving to eat and her constant blacking out/ memory issues she also seems to be unable to remember pretty much anything. Especially when she is talking to or listening to people and just zones out. Leaving blank holes in the story that could have been filled in a bit better.

Although, I am not sure this is an intentional character flaw such as her constant eating. In my head it just didn't add up to a great quality protagonist. Character flaws are wonderful when they make sense. However, I didn't feel that (especially the love of large meals and need for constant eating whereas her drinking only soda actually made sense) some of them were needed. Not being able to find her phone charger and never having her phone charged, that I could relate to.

Even after all that; I am going to read the next book in the series as I still believe it has potential. Generally when a book is a tough read (for me) - when the words are a bit staccato and you keep questioning the ideas behind the book I won't even bother. However, I do like the 'idea' of the storyline. I am hoping it was just a rough start to the series like some of those pilot episodes and it will get better for me.

This series has sucked me in, and I can’t stop reading it. I’m currently on book 5, but had to write my review for book 1 before I get them all mixed up. I’m loving almost every minute of it. I love mysteries, and I love paranormal, so this series is great for that. The paranormal population has recently come out of the shadows, so while Kat was attempting to do some supernatural tourism in Vegas, something went horribly wrong and she has no memory of even arriving in Vegas before she woke up in the hospital.

Kat really is a mess. While I like her, some of her ditziness grates on my nerves after a while. She zones out a lot. I can appreciate her appetite, as someone who also has a huge appetite, but half the book is her eating. I don’t mind overlooking that bc I do love the story. She hits her head an awful lot, so I’m not sure if she has brain damage or if that’s just her personality. By the end of the book, I’m thinking she should definitely have her head examined bc no one hits their head that many times without some kind of damage.

The side characters in this book are probably better than the main character. Jonny is her vampire roommate. They have no idea how they know each other, but he’s drawn to her and her safety. There are others, but I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but know Kat keeps some interesting company. I will say Frank from the Texas Taco Depository is a great character too. I wish I had someone like Frank in my life.

My main complaint with this book (and series) is that Kat commonly mentions feelings of inferiority compared to her friend Helen. In every. Single. Book. Repeatedly. We get it. Helen is hot. But the constant “oh I’m nothing compared to her” gets old pretty quickly. Even the guys in Kat’s life, including the potential love interest, make comments about how hot Helen is every time her name is brought up. It’s kinda gross, if I’m being honest.

While the mystery of who tried to kill the mob boss’s daughter is solved, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. It would have been nice to get a little more insight as to what happened in Vegas, but now that I’m further into the series, the questions do get answered, but not until books 4 and 5.

This series is good for someone just looking for some laughs and pass the time. There are little inconsistencies, but don’t take it too seriously. I don’t get the impression this series was intended for deep thought.

This is the first book in the "Kat Parker" series of cozy paranormal mysteries. Story is told in first person pov by Katrina 'Kat' Parker, recently wed, widowed, and newly possessed of the ability to communicate with people in comas.

Kat is drawn into a web of intrigue when she agrees to attempt communicating with the comatose daughter of a mob boss. Unfortunately, not only is Natasha suffering from a traumatic head injury, but her psyche has also been harmed. Kat is unable to get a clear read from her, except to learn that Natasha is terrified. In the meantime, Kat is dealing with her own drama. She doesn't recall her sudden Vegas wedding (nor the death of her new husband), she's sharing the home she inherited from Andrew with Jonny (a vampire with amnesia of his own), a detective she shared a hot kiss with in Vegas (Damian) has suddenly turned up in Houston, a turtle seems to have adopted her, her mother drops a bombshell on her, and her pool looks like a swamp. In spite of everything, Kat is determined to help Natasha. As she closes in on the truth, however, she may be the next one on a mobster's hit list.

The story was entertaining and downright funny in places, but there was a lot of useless filler included. The entire subplot of the pool could have been edited out without affecting the plot. Kat swooned and hit her head so many times I feared she'd be the one in a coma by the end of it. Aside from that, most people don't repeatedly pass out each time they receive a shock, ffs. The most aggravating aspect of the book is that I felt like I started reading in the middle of the series. Was there a prequel that I missed? I don't know. The author kept alluding to the events of Vegas (Kat fell in love with Andrew, married him, he died, she ended up in the hospital(?), she met Jonny and he accompanied her back to Houston, she met Damian and he followed her to Houston, her 'power' manifested itself, and I also got the vague impression that it was while Kat was in Vegas that the supernatural world was revealed to the world at large). It was confusing. Worst of all, the ending was abrupt and many things were left unresolved. Boo.

I enjoyed the story and laughed out loud at some parts, but it was vexing enough that I'm giving it no more than an average score. Three stars

I haven't done a bullet-point review in a while...

--"Quirky" heroine instead reads as annoying and immature. (Seriously. She avoids all vegetables and only drinks soda. She's in her late 20s or early 30s; I don't remember but she's far too old for this to be an endearing trait).

--No real mystery. If we're going by common mystery logic, it has to be someone we're introduced to, and that limits the suspect pool already, but mostly it's because nothing pushes the mystery along.

--Two hot supernatural guys. Sorry, I think my brain fritzed out on enjoying this somewhere during the Vampire Diaries. I don't do love triangles (though it isn't one yet and hopefully won't be), and I don't do battle of the supernaturals.

--I hope you like a bunch of information thrown at you with no resolution. Kat is married, widowed, and acquires supernatural powers in Vegas, and she doesn't remember any of it. She and Jonny the Vampire both lost the memories of the events. There's also the police detective, Damian, who ends up in Houston. No explanation of what happened that she does remember, or what she did for Damian, or why, or anything really. There's some other information she learns throughout the book that she barely has a reaction to or isn't given any really emotional moment . You're literally dumped in the middle of a story, and people are talking like there's a backstory you missed.

-- The writing is so lighthearted and comedic that it forgets to give space to sad or emotional moments, leaving all the characters feeling two-dimensional at best. I'd honestly say they were caricatures only because this book didn't have any deep thoughts in any part of it.

--I guess the gimmick worked because I'm gonna read book 2. What did happen in Vegas?

Wow, this was a lot.

“Mind If I Come In” is the first book in a series that feels like the third book in a series. So much is going on, and we’re left with counting how many times the lead character cracks open a Diet Coke. In a world where the lines between the supernatural and the non-supernatural have broken down, Kat Parker finds herself 1) with amnesia, having forgotten her husband who she was married to for a series of hours 2) living with a vampire who also has no memory of who he is or why he’s here 3) communicating with the dead 4) with birth parents who are not her birth parents.

Any of these would be more than enough plot for another book. Here, they take up space and are overlooked by a lead character who daydreams and misses vital information, from forgetting she’s adopted to sitting with guacamole on her chin because she’s too distracted to wipe it.

Plot wise, a lot just doesn’t make sense. Kat initially has a slime bag lawyer whisper something into the ear of a comatose man, and she promptly repeats the embarrassing words in a courtroom, which ruins the scumbag lawyer. Why wouldn’t he have denied he said it and called Kat a fraud, since that was his argument in advance?

A little later on, Jonny asks Kat not to tell Damian that Damian used to know Jonny. Did I miss a plot where Damian also lost his memory?

I can’t understate how much it bothered me that this book was anchored by plot points that happened off screen and weren’t resolved. I know it’s a series, so hopefully at some point we’ll know why we spent a chunk of this book dealing with the POOL MAN.

Helen was one dimensional. She’s the most attractive nurse in the history of humanity. Got it.

2.5 stars, rounded up to 3. Norman and the Turtle salvaged this one for me. I didn’t mind the read, it didn’t offend me, but not a strong effort out of the gate. I’m not sure I’ll be back for book two.

Weird, exciting, different

This is the first book in a series. I'm a bit of a meanie buying books because I'm an OAP and I read a lot of free books. However, I love this series and having read the first, I immediately bought the second.
The dialogue is refreshingly realistic (if you can be realistic when talking to a vampire and a giant!!) and the banter is funny. Now, I enjoy reading anything from Pam Ayres to Shakespeare but I won't just read anything. I know within the first two chapters whether a book is worth my time (and I don't have an awful lot of that left, so I can't waste it reading rubbish) but if you are looking for a bit of well written, light hearted travels into the supernatural (and you don't have to believe in it, I don't. Just chill, and enjoy) that's a bit spooky but definitely a laugh, then this is the book for you.

2.5 stars = pretty good but with nits - I was looking for quirky or silly - amnesiac vampire, h who gains the ability yo mind speak to the comatose after getting married and widowed in Vegas (the associated memories are blocked), and something about pirates sounded like it would fit the bill, plus it was free. This was pretty good as a quirky mystery, but I did have nits. It's fairly long and some of the middle could have been clipped without much loss - the h is trying to help a comatose child and one or two less mind trips resulting in no info about the kid's sitch and head bumps and blackouts for the h would have tightened this up a great deal. Still over all I was entertained. I think I will give this series another try, but I am going to skip forward to book 3 of 4 and find out what happened in Vegas.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Let me into your mind and delve

Brilliant! Had me chuckling at a lot of it. Married, widowed, being gifted with the talent of talking to comatose patients after a recent trip to Vegas (where one of her closest friends died) Kat is all set for a quite life. Well as quiet as having a vampire roomy can get. However throw in a comatose little girl, her mobster father and Snappy the turtle and you have an absolutely terrific read. What actually happened to the little girl? Will Kat be able to get to the bottom of it? Attempted murder adds to the intrigue and the appearance of the hot Vegas detective adds the romantic angle. The characters are a cross between Absolutely Fabulous and the Keystone Kops whilst the plot has you reading without any breaks. Terrific!

I have started and not finished at least 3 mysteries in the past month - boring characters, lack of plot, pedestrian writing. Then this book turned up on Amazon kindle deals & I thought one more try for a newbie. WOW!!

Funny characters, with lots of backstory hinted at, but not relevant to this particular narrative, lending to lots of unanswered questions for later books. The plot line was engaging, there were enough clues to keep all the characters straight, and the writing is wryly humorous, but doesn't fall into OTT slapstick.

The protagonist does walk dimly into the bad guy's cellar way too often, and the writer clearly has been misinformed about the TBI damage that results from repeated head injury, but nevertheless, I can't wait to start reading #2 in the series.

Well written, with interesting characters. It's one of a series, but it works as a stand-alone novel. This is the first in the series. I bought this one because I had read the third in the series, which has constant references to something that happened earlier, which I though would be an entertaining read. Surprisingly, the one that gives the background seems to be not the first, but the fourth in the series.

There are vampires and giants, but neither is given much play except for strength. There is mind-reading, of a sort. Otherwise it's set in a fairly normal sort of world. There is plenty of humour, and I found it a pleasure to spend time with the main character. I'm left wanting to learn more about the other characters. A competent, sometimes charming, novel.

Kat Parker went to Vegas but things didn’t stay in Vegas. She met a man, fell in love married him, then forgot him along with most the things that happened there (amnesia), and, Kat suddenly developed the ability to communicate with comatose people.
Now if that was not enough the vampire she met, Jonny came home with her and now shares her house; Damian, the cop who helped save her life in Vegas transferred to Houston and is always stopping by her house to help or to feed her.
Since she can communicate with comatose people she agrees to help a mob boss’s injured child, she has to make a living, you know!

Fun read with nice pace and flow. I look forward to reading more!

Very Fun Book

Kat Parker gets herself into voodoo many interesting and unique situations in one day it's hard to keep track of them all. Mind If I Come In is no exception. The running gag in this book is that she keeps calling and hitting her head. Once again, the characters are funny with much situational comedy running throughout the story. I like to read Kat Parker novels because they are so ridiculously funny, help me to relax, I laugh out loud a lot and they are quick to read. So if you are looking for some mindless (not in a bad way) fun, K. L. Phelps' Kat Parker Novels are the way to go.

There is kind of no beginning and no end to this book. We jump right in to the middle of the story with little explanation to why things are going on this way, and the end just sort of cuts us off abruptly. The women in this book read like 12 year olds (lots of blushing, soda drinking, refusal to eat anything but fast food, and ‘liking’ men) and I knew whodunnit’ by about chapter 20 (there are 70+). But having said that, it was funny, it was out of the ordinary, the characters have potential, and I actually enjoyed most of it. I think the author may improve with experience, like most of us, and I’m looking forward to see if that is true. I hope so, in the best way possible.

Cute, but slightly confusing

I liked the writing style a great deal. The story was fast paced, but..you feel like you're reading a sequel to a book that was never written, or maybe you're the new friend in a group that's known each other since grade school. There are so many references to a storyline that sounds very interesting, yet your questions go unanswered. Maybe this was the intention, as I will continue the series to see if there is a prequel. All in all, an entertaining read with characters you want to know more.

I read this after book 2. I liked this one better - the h is less of a ditz in this book. Though the "mystery" is painfully obvious from really early in the book. It's an easy read and surprisingly engaging. Escapism. The writing isn't great (dialogue in particular), but it's not horrible. It isn't overrun with terrible grammatical mistakes that so many books have these days.

Not sure whether I'll.read more in the series.

Fast paced murder mystery with a side of paranormal.

Kat can talk to unconscious people, and people like lawyers and cops want to hear what those people know. What they know can cause Kat a lot of trouble, and her vampire roommate is there to protect her along with a baby turtle, Snappy, that seems to understand English. I will be looking forward to acquiring more in this series.

Better than book 2...

Okay, now put down the Diet Coke! Especially if you're a diabetic. But then she is always eating - or falling down. The bad guy is who you think he is, and can't all of us talk with turtles? Don't know if the other books in the series tie up a lot of loose ends and if her sex life ever improves... And what is Johhny's back story? A vampire who can handle midday sun?

2.5 stars. You're dropped into the middle of a story (I checked twice that this was the first book) with lots of callbacks to what's happened prior without much context. I'm a Diet Pepsi addict so won't judge but, dang, I got tired of reading that she got yet another Diet Coke. It takes more than food and beverage facts to build a character.

Having written all that, I'm going to read the next book just to see if it explains more and makes me care more about the characters.

The setup felt like this was part 2 of a serie, with much that happen before this book starter. That was off-putting. The main character’s “gift” also turned out to be pretty useless. Characters were so-so as was the plot, but the writing was easy to follow. I read this out loud to my girlfriend and was a pleasant enough read. I’ll continue with this series, but it’s not something I can really recommend.

Excellent

Well for one, I couldn't put this book down. It was funny in some spots, how could it not. You would have to get to know the players. Kat, can talk to comatose people. Johnny be Good is a vampire. Damien, is a cop and a giant, yep you heard right. It was a fun read. I absolutely loved it.

Really good book...I liked the characters and the banter between them all. Story was good also...but kinda figured it out at the get go...but that’s ok. The only thing I didn’t really like was Kat ALWAYS fainting. But that can be easily overlooked. Definitely reading second book in series!! Happy Reading :)
