Warren is just a guardsman with a haunted past eager for a new castle to defend. All that changes when he's summoned to the edges of the kingdom, where walls protect cities against the diabolical foes of the wildlands. His mission is save the Dragon Farm he just inherited, settle down as a lord, and help his new city thrive. As a soldier who normally lives by the blade, he's out of his element but up to the task... especially since tame dragons seem to like him.
The thing is, there's more going on than a simple estate bestowment. Politics stir, assassins run free, and enemies of humanity raise their banners. Worse yet, Warren's past smashes into his present when others uncover his mysterious history. Will a scorned princess be his downfall, or will it be a horde of orcs? Or will a rogue dragon stop his rise to power?
Warren doubts it, because he knows he's meant for greatness, and he's not alone. With a clever dragon breeder, a savvy street seller, and a bonded royal dragon of immense power by his side, he might be able to save the world... if his enemies don’t finish him first.
It's really annoying when monetary systems don't make any sense at all. Especially for a book at least partially based on economics and merchandising. At one point we are told 40 copper coins is a lot to spend for an egg of known providence, and that represents several months pay for a common soldier. Then a few pages later MC pays 4 copper for entry to an open-air market. Then a couple of chapters later eggs of dubious fertility are going for silver and gold. Then MC starts paying orphans several silvers a day as wages. Massive inflation. (-1)
This book was a breath of fresh air for a harem because there was another strong male character interacting with our MC. Then we find out this strong male character (-1)
A lot of thought went into the worldbuilding. It does a good job of feeling big and epic, unfortunately everything else, from the plot to the characters and relationships, let me down a bit.
There is so much that the author has put into this book, that sometimes I wonder where the author is intending to go. The author also follows an premise that was used in the movie 'Goldfinger'. The pilot Pussy Galore, a henchman of Goldfinger, switches sides after rolling in the hay (sex) with James Bond. He says that he appealed to her maternal instincts. There are two times that women have been sent to spy, get in the good graces of the MC. Both times after having sex with the MC, they are now on his side. This is a world where dragons are plentiful and come in all sizes. You have the very small shoulder mount dragons, about the size of a cat or a small dog. You have the next size that are the size of a black bear, and are used as guard dogs. Then you have the utility sized ones that are used like draft horses to plow fields or pull wagons. Lastly you have the airship sized that are used to transport groups of people across the countryside. Dragons are everything in this society, and breeding and selling them is big business. Our MC, Warren who is in the military, and trying his best not to be noticed, suddenly inherits an estate and a dragon farm in the town that he grew up in. There are lots of politics at play here with many players in this game. The ending threw me for a loop and had me confused. Motives of the various parties were unclear and I felt as if I had missed something big. For the most part I recommend this book. Just be prepared to complicated ride.
I've criticized Jace's books for being all over the place and hard to follow. To an extent, this book is like that, but working with Marcus (these could be the same person, I know these Authors use many pen names) seems to have helped balance things out I managed to continue through the confusing parts. Boy, am I glad I did, this book started out slow but built to a nice tempo, and then the last 20% went crazy but what an ending. I look forward to the next one.
I was not really enjoying this and then the story sped up and it was fun. We came to an abrupt halt that was just annoying and then the last 5 pages just exploded. If that had been strung more through an entire book I would have enjoyed it more. And no epilogue at all.
When I say this was epic, I mean it, in every sense of the word. I was intrigued by every single chapter and it really scratched that itch for dragon fantasy that I was looking for. I’ve never read anything like this. I’m a big fan of progression fantasy and I was a bit stunned by the 100+ chapters but man am I glad I gave it a try. This was so good! Ugh! Where have you been all this time?! I want to thank the author for creating this wonderful story because never have I ever read a dragon fantasy with good storytelling, great characters, an amazing world and progression that had enough detailed spice to leave me pleasantly uncomfortable (if you know what I mean🥴). I enjoyed every second of this book and I can’t wait to start the next one.
The initial part of the book was well written, the pacing was good, the authors laid out the world well, and you can immerse yourself in it.
The TROUBLE lies during the middle to the latter part of the book, the pacing is too FAST.
An aphorism took me out of the story especially when the word "DOLLAR" was included, like really? You can just change it to "GOLD" and the meaning will transfer well.
What I like about this story, in contrast to others in this genre, is that the MC is not a sniveling wreck. It's believable too due to his life experience.
A rollicking good story that is quite long. Spicy scenes galore, but the story holds up well, even if women do seem to throw themselves at the MC a bit too much.
I do think there is a lot of things going on at the same time, and the last chapter is really crazy - I hope this gets explained a bit more believably in the next book.
Starting to get the feeling that the author sometimes smokes something too much, and then goes bananas in 'what can I do now to make this interesting (for me)'-department.
Here's hoping that the author(s) can keep this going to a good conclusion.
Possibly Mr. Sloss's best work. Multiple unexpected reveals as the story arc and plotline unfold. Very different, intriguing and novel concept of what dragons are and how they fit into the world.
Mature warning - explicit sexual scenes are portrayed multiple times. (however this is not a 'smut' novel as they comprise 1% or less of the content. IE it would still be a great novel if they were reduced to one liners.)
This book held my i terest from page 1. The storyline is well developed with twists and turns so unexpected that I had to go back to see if I missed something. The characters that steal the book are the dragons. The human characters are very good, well developed and diverse. I have to wait almost a week for book 2 and can't wait. I'm sure the second book will continue the excitement. I hope book 3 is ready soon after I read book 2
Oh wow… this one truly surprised me. I loved the MC and even though this turned out to be a harem, it was eloquently written and all the women are treated respectfully and appreciated for who they are and all the strength they bring to the relationship as a whole.
The ending of this totally blew me away!
I’m happy Princess Camilla survives even though her mama’s a c*nt. I can’t wait to see what happens next’

I would run out of adjectives trying to tell you all how incredibly good this book is!!! I expect outstanding world building and character development from this author but this is on a whole other level!!! I'm going to be counting the days waiting to read more in this series!!!!
Picked this up after reading a couple of your other books and found it a very entertaining read, with a good mix of estate building and combat. To top it off you managed to write an ending to this book that just made it so I'm looking forward to the next and not annoyed it was left where it was.
It's got everything you would want bodice ripping, fighting ,dragons, plus a cracking good story. Now if sexy times is not your cup of tea but zero to hero is just skip the sexy bits cause it's a great story and will keep you hooked right till the end, which is so good I need book 2 like straight away.
In my estimation the book is boring The author keeps drawing on and on about dragons and learning there is no Magic The main character he keeps floundering even though he's got These magic abilities that it really doesn't put to good use I mean seriously the book is long but nothing really happens in it to keep your attention it's all just mundane garbage
Too much smut, overall it is an interesting concept for a book but everything comes easy to MC, all the women fall for him, all problems are solved easily. This book just feels very shallow and the last chapter needed way more set up.
Not a bad book if you are looking for fantasy with a solid amount of smut, but for me I won’t be continuing the series.
I was surprised by how good this was. The big twist at the end was something I didn't guess, and it's good. Characters had it's depth. Beside the intimate scenes, which I skimmed, I enjoyed reading it. I was uncomfortable with the polygamy part, but the rest of the events were good that I chose to ignore them.
Different take on this book. For the most part good stuff. Lots of action great characters and descriptions of flora fauna and locations is great. Then you get the teenage boy sex fantasy scenes which thankfully there’s not too many. All in all a good read and I look forward to next book
The dragon breeding mobile game premise is a bit stretched, and while he starts out as a likeable underdog he becomes an unpleasant sleazebag as the story progresses. Probably what would happen if everyone kept throwing themselves at you, but why choose realism for that particular bit? All the teasers about backstory and big reveals couldn’t keep me reading past about 70%. A shame.
Im not into harem-lit, but the story is so good I didn't mind it. If you can overlook the smut, or skip it entirely, the story besides is fantastic and worth the read.
This book was weird and I don’t know how I feel. There were so many twists and turns that I lost track of the story at times. The book ends on a massive cliffhanger which isn’t to bad since book 2 is out but man I don’t understand what just happened.
I was so pleasantly surprised at the quality of this book. It is an epic epic story. I did not expect it to be so well written and have so much depth to the story.
I have greatly enjoyed the book… a good adventure story, developed characters and some humor all made for a good read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I loved all of the information about dragons and the stairs hybrid, I wasn't too fond of the erotic portions so I skipped them haha. But I am invested in the story now and give it a try you might be too
I really liked this one. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the book is already a good length. I'm just sad there is not more immediately available!
