BRANDON MULL is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Fablehaven, Dragonwatch, Beyonders, and Five Kingdoms series. A kinetic thinker, Brandon enjoys bouncy balls, squeezable stress toys, and popping bubble wrap. He lives in Utah in a happy little valley near the mouth of a canyon with his wife, Erlyn, their eleven children, and three mischievous cats. Brandon loves meeting his readers and hearing about their experiences with his books.
The Adventurer's Guide to Dragonwatch is a reference book for the Dragonwatch series. My kids have read the whole series and really enjoy themed reference books. They check out themed reference books from the library quite a bit. I think this book is also beneficial for adults. We had listened to an audiobook of Dragonwatch in the car and I had forgotten some characters, but I didn't want to necessarily reread the whole series again. This book comes in handy if you want to refresh your memory. It also comes in handy if you haven't read the books and want to know what your kids are talking about. I like that there are illustrations in the book that help you visualize the characters.
Please note that I received a free copy to review, however, this is my honest opinion.
Brandon Mull has created some of my favorite books and series. The Adventurer’s Guide to Dragonwatch is a companion to his well-loved Dragonwatch series.
This book is truly beautiful. I really liked the cover, especially the part that says, "Property of the Library at Fablehaven." This book reads like an encyclopedia and is full of secrets from the magical worlds in Fablehaven and Dragonwatch. I enjoyed learning more about magical items, artifacts, dragon slayers, five legendary swords, wizards, giants, and of course, dragons. The illustrations by Brandon Dorman are fantastic and really bring the stories to life.
This new addition to the Dragonwatch series is fun and imaginative. It will once again draw you and your kids into the captivating universe created by Brandon Mull.
Well, glad to have this. Though, I really wish some of the stuff featured in here could have made it into, I don't know, THE ACTUAL SERIES??? Still, I DID find a detail that could mean another sequel series, so fingers crossed!
Initial Thoughts: Brandon Mull continues to expand the Dragonwatch universe with this Adventurer’s Guide, which dives into all things Fablehaven and Dragonwatch—from locations and magical creatures to weapons, artifacts, and legends. While Mull is the author, the real star of this guide is Brandon Dorman, the illustrator. His stunning artwork brings the world to life with vibrant color and detail, making the book feel immersive and inviting.
This isn’t a short appendix—it’s over a hundred pages of lore. In fact, Mull arguably expands more on the world here than he did in the actual Dragonwatch series. The guide stays grounded in the universe through handwritten notes from Seth (“S.S.”), Kendra (“K.S.”), and even the occasional interjection from Knox. I did wish a few more characters had chimed in, but I understand that’s not the purpose of this book—it’s meant to be a fact-packed supplement rather than a full narrative.
Plot and Writing: There’s no traditional plot here, but that’s not a bad thing. Mull approaches this guide like a textbook for the Fablehaven world, breaking it down into themed sections like artifacts, creatures, locations, giants, and more. Each section is further divided into smaller blurbs, offering context and background for every item. Fans of the Fablehaven and Dragonwatch series will recognize many elements, but there are also new ones—possibly hinting at future stories Mull has yet to tell.
The writing is easy and accessible, which makes this a delight to flip through, especially for younger fans or anyone wanting a refresher on the lore. My only real complaint? There were two small sections where Mull tells the reader to “see The Caretaker’s Guide to Fablehaven” instead of including the content here. While it only happens twice, it felt lazy—why include these sections at all if you’re not going to expand on them? This guide otherwise feels rich and complete, so these omissions stood out.
Conclusion: This book is made for fans who can’t get enough of the Fablehaven universe. It doesn’t add much to the plot, nor is it necessary to enjoy the series—but it’s a wonderfully crafted companion for anyone wanting to dive deeper into Mull’s world. Full of fun facts, whimsical notes from characters, and absolutely gorgeous illustrations, this is the kind of “just for fun” extra that every fantasy series deserves. If you’re missing Fablehaven, this is the perfect way to revisit the magic.
The Adventurer’s Guide to Dragonwatch by Brandon Mull is a must for Dragonwatch fans! My kids grew up loving Fablehaven & then the Dragonwatch series. When my oldest saw this, even at 23, she was so excited.
I loved the look of this book! From the ancient worn paper appearance to the beautiful illustrations, to the fun descriptions of each item & handwritten notes from Seth & Kendra as well as a letter from Patten Burgess himself, this hardbound collector’s edition guide is an amazing companion to the series. It also includes extra content not found in the Dragonwatch series. Though I haven’t read all the books, I was impressed by the quality craftsmanship of the guide including a gold ribbon bookmark to mark your reading spot.
Content includes:
🐉A compendium on the most dangerous mythical & magical creatures including dragons, giants, & fairies with never before seen illustrations.
👑The history of the five great monarchs: The Underking, the Fairy Queen, the Demon King, the Giant Queen, & the Dragon King.
💎Powerful information on the priceless stone called the Ethergem that powered the five crowns of the monarchs.
🗡️An in-depth study of magical items & artifacts, including the five legendary swords, never before revealed.
The content is clean, intelligently written, & ignites the imagination. It’s perfect for middle grade readers & up. If you’re not familiar with the series, this would be an excellent reference guide to have on hand while reading. A must have for Brandon Mull aficionados! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.
The Adventurer’s Guide to Dragonwatch is written for “student(s) of dragons and the creatures that coexist with them across diverse sanctuaries.” It’s a compendium designed to help “Dragonwatch operatives who are devoted to understanding and protecting these complex and enchanting communities.
In other words, it’s a companion to Brandon Mull’s popular Dragonwatch series, which builds on his equally as popular Fablehaven series. Now, even if you haven’t read these series, The Adventurer’s Guide to Dragonwatch is still enjoyable — the imagination is spectacular — but you’ll enjoy it even more reading it in context with its predecessors.
Mull has crafted and encyclopedia of sorts that can be read cover-to-cover or bouncing from place to place. The book is organized into alphabetically ordered chapters with alphabetically ordered topics inside. An extensive index at the end also allows for quick searches.
Equally as impressive are Brandon Dorman’s detailed illustrations that are worth paging through the book on their own.
The Adventurer’s Guide to Dragonwatch is an impressive collection that would make a fantastic gift for fans of the series.
Dragonwatch is one of my very favorite middle grade series. It's so well written. It sucks the reader in from the first. I love the characters and the adventure of it all. And Seth and Kendra!
This book is so beautiful. It even comes with it's own ribbon bookmark. I love all of the details that are included with this one.
The pages in this book are so beautiful! I love the way they look like they're made from old paper. And the illustrations are so amazing! Everything about the way this one was put together is beautiful.
One of my very favorite things is that some of the entries include fun little notes from Seth and Kendra. It just brings the whole series even more to life.
This is a beautiful book. First, you encounter the cover. It is embossed and invited you to just touch it and rub your hands over the surface to caress and love the book. Then, after many satisfying moments, you open the book and the world of Dragonwatch comes to life with amazing illustrations of beasts, fairies, dragons, and even artifacts. There is a short paragraph entry about the creatures and items from the book series that allows you to dive even deeper into this amazing world created by Brandon Mull. This is a book is coffee-table quality complete with a ribbon bookmark.
To say my 10-year-old is obsessed with Brandon Mull books is an understatement! After reading Fablehaven he quickly moved onto the Dragonwatch series. He loves all the action, the characters and clean content. He was so excited to get this adventurer’s guide, which is filled with illustrations and info about the books! The cover is stunning and it’s such a well-made book. Definitely worth buying for your Dragonwatch fan!
Ok first- this book is GORGEOUS! It is a hardback and it looks absolutely amazing. It is 100% worth every penny just to stare at it 😉😂 This book is an absolute must have for every Brandon Mull fan, young and old. It has so many fun creatures, weapons, and magical items and was so so cool! My 12 year old about died 😁 There was so much stuff to learn about, and it will keep any reader entertained.
Thank you to the author and publisher for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
Just like the Caretakers Guide to Fablehaven, The Adventurer's Guide to Dragonwatch serves as a reference Guide to the Dragonwatch series. I read it after I finished the Dragonwatch series, so it was good to get a visual image of some of the characters, items, and places.
I really appreciate all the time and work Brandon Mull puts into his series. He has a great imagination. I can't wait to read his other series, like the Candy Shop Wars and the Five Kingdoms.
This was a good guide. I wish it was published when I was reading Dragonwatch. Goes through all the characters (mortal and mythical) that are in the books. I also liked the photos that went along with it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This beautiful book is a great addition to Dragonwatch. It has all the characters and significant items defined for readers to pick things up at a glimpse. Especially if you're going back to reread. It'll jog your memory of what things are. Beautiful!
This is basicly like Fablehaven. My review is the same. I love a good bestiary. Although i have to say, i wish there were more drawings. Or at least drawings of the main characters. Other than that, it was a fun read and I got to know some creatures and places.
