It's 1994. Aimee Reeds just graduated high school. Her father stands beside her on the football field and snaps a Polaroid picture. Zzzz-chink. The sound of the camera makes bile rise in her throat. She has to get out of this place, away from the father that abused her since she was five and the mother who let him. So, Aimee drives away and doesn't look back.
Hundreds of miles from Kansas City, in a cheap motel outside of Terre Haute, Indiana, Aimee Reeds becomes the next version of herself. This version of Aimee is wild, free, and falls fast for the first person who ever made her feel safe and alive. Aimee finally discovers what it's like to be loved.
But the fantasy doesn't last, because fantasies are almost as fragile as the human soul. Laughter turns to tears, freedom to pain, love to loss as Aimee finds herself trapped in a cycle of drugs and violence that turn her into someone she soon wants to forget. By the time she meets her best friend, drag queen Charlie Moreno, she has reinvented herself once again. This time, she's sure she can leave her past behind. The problem is, your past is always a part of you, no matter how hard you try to forget.
Charlie should know, he's serving three consecutive life sentences at Tamms Correctional Facility for the murders he committed to avenge Aimee's death. Justice doesn't come cheap. As Charlie loses himself in the pages of Aimee's journal, he starts to wonder if he ever really knew his best friend at all. It is incredible the secrets one can keep if nobody is looking.
The third book in the Serial Showgirl series, this is Aimee’s story. Dark. Twisted. Painful. Gut-wrenching. Aimee is more complicated, deeper, and more duplicitous than you ever could have imagined. Brace yourself. You're about to go on a ride that will have you questioning everything.
This was definitely my favorite of the series! Reading about Aimee's back story and the alternating point of view with Charlie, was SO good! Heartbreaking. Dark. Intense. Thrilling. So many words come to mind to describe the last novel to wrap up the series. Thank you Dan and Melinda for sharing your gifts with us. I sure hope this is not the last we see from these 2!
I absolutely loved this series. Easy to read, no dull spots, engaging at every chapter. I am not a big reader and these captured my attention. Good to the last line!
