Coming home was supposed to be simple… until he came into my life.

Hicks Creek wasn’t part of my plan, but my best friend’s wedding brings me back to the small town I once left behind, and a new teaching job makes it clear I’m staying. It’s meant to be simple—family, friends, and a fresh start.

Then I meet Derek Townson. He’s rugged, brooding, and completely off-limits. A widowed single dad with walls higher than the mountains surrounding this town. His daughter is in my class, and he’s impossible to avoid.

The more I’m around him, the more I see through the cracks in his armor. But just as we start to connect, I uncover a truth about his past that could destroy everything.

Falling for him was never part of the plan. Now, I have to decide—follow my heart or walk away before it’s too late.

Love Under the Stars is a heartfelt, emotional, and swoon-worthy small-town romance that blends charm, chemistry, and just the right dose of suspense. Set in the cozy, secret-filled town of Hicks Creek, this grumpy x sunshine romance follows Amber—a compassionate teacher returning home for a fresh start—and Derek, a guarded single dad still grieving the past.

Amber’s warmth and selflessness make her instantly lovable, especially in the way she bonds effortlessly with Derek’s children, particularly his daughter, Casey. Derek, on the other hand, is gruff, distant, and fiercely protective—but it’s clear from the start that Amber is exactly the kind of light his family needs.

Their slow-burn romance is full of tension, tenderness, and unforgettable moments—from a sweet, serendipitous meet-cute to a forbidden connection intensified by old wounds and whispered secrets. Things take a dramatic turn when Amber uncovers something about Derek’s past that shatters their fragile trust. His reaction is raw and painful—but ultimately, redemption comes in the form of heartfelt apologies, growth, and a grand gesture that brings this found family full circle.

Kris Abbott delivers a beautifully written story about love, healing, and second chances. With its vibrant supporting cast, small-town drama, and emotional depth, Love Under the Stars is a standout in the Hicks Creek series—and a must-read for anyone who loves their romance with heart, heat, and hope.

Thank you so much @krisabbottauthor and @theauthor.agency for the opportunity to read this exceptional ARC.

ARC Review

This was my first read by Kris Abott, and I’m glad I got the chance to discover a new-to-me author!

Love Under the Stars follows Amber, a warm-hearted elementary school teacher returning to her small hometown in search of a fresh start, and Derek, a rugged, broody widower trying to keep his life—and his orchard—afloat while raising his kids. The small-town setting was charming, and I really enjoyed the single dad trope, the sweet moments with Derek’s children, and the cozy, slightly suspenseful undertone running through the story.

Amber was instantly likable—kind, genuine, and easy to root for. Derek, on the other hand, was a bit harder to warm up to. His mixed signals in the beginning were confusing; he’d push Amber away with coldness or even rudeness, only to later draw her closer. Once that barrier dropped, their romance felt a bit rushed, and I found myself wishing for more build-up and emotional connection before things got serious.

That said, the book had plenty of heart and small-town charm, and I appreciated the emotional depth it tried to explore. Thank you to the author for the ARC—it was a solid 3-star read for me!

* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
I really did enjoy this book. Derek is a widower, a single dad, and very successful farm owner.
Amber is his daughter's teacher. They meet before the school year starts and sparks immediately went crazy when he kissed her to get away from his disastrous blind date he was on. He is very reserved at first, he doesn't let to many people in, but they eventually can't deny each other anymore. I liked the suspense plot of this book, but I felt like they could have been better at communicating but they did figure everything out in the end.

I absolutely loved Love Under the Stars by Kris Abbott; it is a small-town best friend’s little sister love story. It is the second book in her Hicks Creek series. Kris Abbott is an amazing storyteller. I was hooked from the first page of Love Under the Stars; it was impossible to put down and I loved every moment on every page. It is one of the most enjoyable books that I have read recently. Who does not love hot sexy men, strong females, loving families, and friends, who always support one another? Love Under the Stars is the story of Amber Shafer, newly hired fourth grade teacher at Hicks Creek Grade School and Derek Townson, organic farmer with a business degree who runs Livesay’s Orchard and single father of Eric and Casey. Amber returns home to Hicks Creek to go wedding dress shopping with her best friend, Bree, recently her life in Connecticut has been rough and she is looking for a getaway from the drama. Amber is not sure that she will ever trust anyone again. While in Hicks Creek she gets offered her dream job of teaching in Hicks Creek. A handsome stranger bumps into her spilling red wine down her dress while she is out with Bree and her sister-in-law, Sofia, and then he kisses her to avoid his current date. Amber meets the handsome stranger again at Meet the Teacher Night, when she learns that his daughter, Casey is in her fourth grade class. Derek realizes that Amber is the little sister of his best friend, Teddy, and does not want to jeopardize that relationship. As Amber and Derek spend time together, at school drop off, pick up, and at school events things change between them. Amber soon discover that her arch nemesis, and high school bully, Sharon is Derek’s late wife and Eric and Casey’s mother. I love the sizzling chemistry between Amber and Derek and the conversations between them flow so easily, with innuendos and playful banter. Mysterious events are taking place around the orchard and Derek is determined to uncover who is behind the events and why. I love all the little things that each of them does for the other and Amber’s relationship with Eric and Casey. I love all the heart-to-heart conversations that take place in Love Under the Stars. I loved that Love Under the Stars is a more than just a romance, there are dilemmas that both Amber and Derek are facing that need to be resolved, secrets that will be revealed, and there is a plot twist that threatens their relationship. I love how the storylines get so beautifully resolved and they admit their feelings for each other. I love the full circle moment that happens at Bree and Charlie’s wedding. I love the ending of the love story, and how both Amber and Derek change because of their love for one another and everything that Derek is willing to do to have a life with Amber. It was the perfect ending of their love story; I especially love the epilogue that takes place one year later, Derek’s proposal and the location where the proposal takes places. Another favorite part of Love Under the Stars is how Kris Abbot incorporated the title of the book into the love story. Love the new name for the orchard. I love all the descriptions of the Hicks Creek setting. Love Under the Stars is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a love story, Kris Abbott did not disappoint, especially with the poignant and bittersweet moments as well as the plot twist and surprises that filled this page turner. I really enjoy how the book is written in the first person from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting inside their minds and knowing their thoughts and how they really feel. I love all the characters in Love Under the Stars. They feel like family and friends. I enjoyed all the interactions between the Amber, Eric, and Casey and the family dynamic, it feels like real family love and makes me laugh at their teasing. I especially love the friendship between Amber, Bree, and Sofia, and Derek’s friendship with Teddy. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. Who does not love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I thoroughly enjoyed Love Under the Stars, who does not love a best friend’s little sister love story. It was such an enjoyable book to read. Highly recommend this incredible love story. Received an advanced copy from the author.

Kris Abbott’s Love Under the Stars delivers a heartwarming and engaging small-town romance that effectively balances tender moments with underlying tension. The premise of returning to one's roots for a fresh start, only to be unexpectedly waylaid by love, is a classic trope, but Abbott infuses it with a genuine charm and relatable characters that make it feel fresh.

The Amber’s initial intention for a simple life in Hicks Creek is immediately complicated by the compelling presence of Derek Townson. Abbott paints Derek as a classic brooding hero – rugged, guarded, and carrying the weight of loss. His status as a widowed single father adds a layer of vulnerability that contrasts nicely with his seemingly impenetrable exterior. The dynamic created by his daughter being in the protagonist’s class provides a natural and believable reason for their paths to cross, avoiding forced encounters.

Abbott excels at the slow burn of the relationship. The narrative allows the connection between the two leads to develop organically, with small, significant moments that chip away at Derek’s walls. The reader feels the protagonist’s growing attraction and understands her empathy for Derek’s situation. The internal conflict she faces – navigating her professional relationship with his daughter while battling her feelings – is well-portrayed.

However, the introduction of a significant secret from Derek’s past injects a dose of drama that feels somewhat predictable within the genre. While it serves to create conflict and raise the stakes, the nature of such secrets in romance novels can sometimes feel formulaic. Nevertheless, Abbott handles the revelation and its potential fallout with sensitivity, focusing on the characters' emotional responses and the difficult choices they face.

Ultimately, Love Under the Stars is a satisfying read for those who enjoy small-town romances with emotionally resonant characters and a touch of angst. Abbott’s writing is engaging, and she successfully creates an atmosphere where the burgeoning love feels both inevitable and worth rooting for. While the plot points may not break new ground, the genuine connection between the protagonists and the charming backdrop of Hicks Creek make this a delightful escape. It’s a story about unexpected love, healing, and the courage to embrace a future that wasn’t part of the original plan.

This book grabbed my attention from the first with its fascinating characters and storyline. Amber is happy to back in her home town after being away for her college education then a relationship that ultimately left her feeling humiliated and wary of opening her heart again. An unexpected kiss from a handsome stranger seems like an o em of better luck until she meets him again and realizes he is the father of one of her students. Derek’s cold, grumpy demeanor is a stark contrast to their first meeting, but she decides to give him some grace after a co-worker tells her that he and the kids have been overwhelmed lately. She also puts the hope of a possible relationship with him away as well since it would be inappropriate for a teacher to date a parent of student in her class. She soon discovers interaction with him is necessary due to his daughter’s withdrawn and distant behaviour in class.

Derek is indeed overwhelmed. He is still grieving the loss of his wife and int to manage the apple orchard and his parental duties. He feels he is lacking in both areas, and putting a burden on his son to help look after is younger sister. As for dating, he is just not ready to open his heart again, no matter what his family and friends think. It also doesn’t matter that he can’t forget the kiss he shared with his daughter’s beautiful new teacher or how attracted he is to her. He also knows that he owes her an apology for his behaviour during both encounters, but he is dreading seeing her again. Then he learns she is his best friend’s sister and he is dealing with guilt too. He does not take her suggestion that his daughter needs help well, causing a lot of friction and frustration between them.

As the story continues, their relationship develops slowly as they meet with the intention of helping his daughter come out of her shell and interact with her classmates. Both Amber and Derek slowly become more open to the possibility of a relationship between them, but letting go of the past is not easy for either of them. Their story also includes a few twists, a few secrets to be revealed and a mystery to solve before Amber and Derek find their happily ever after.

I am happy to recommend this engaging book.

Derek and Amber accidentally bump into each other at a winery when she’s back home in Hicks Creek to go wedding dress shopping for her best friend Bree’s wedding. He kisses her in hopes to avoid his current date. After explaining to her about the kiss something in him shifts and he puts on a mask, hiding his emotions, and walks away.

Amber is back home in Hicks Creek teaching fourth grade and Derek is an organic farm and owns the town apple orchard and has two amazing kids, a daughter named Casey and a son named Eric. Turns out Casey is Amber’s student and their second meeting at parents “meet the teacher night” doesn’t go so well.

It’s been a few years since Derek’s wife passed away and is 100% emotionally unavailable, same for Amber. Her last boyfriend gaslit her nonstop and cheated on her, not to mention she still struggles mentally with what her childhood bully said and did to her.

While Derek gives off a grumpy demeanor at every meeting, Amber basically kills him with kindness, until piece by piece his mask falls and he slowly lets Amber in and vice versa. Until it all falls apart. Amber overhears Derek’s mother-in-law plot his demise and spills the plans that his late wife had for the orchard.

All the while someone is trying to ruin or damage things around the orchard.
There’s a sizzling chemistry between Derek and Amber and their conversations flow easily and are filled with banter and are intense at moments.

In Love Under the Stars, there are several dilemmas that both characters have to face that need to be resolved, secrets are revealed and there’s a plot twist that threatens Derek and Amber’s relationship. I enjoyed how it all comes together at Bree and Charlie’s wedding. I loved Derek’s kids! I thought they were so sweet and were accepting to Derek falling in love with Amber.

With that being said, their relationship is slightly toxic. Slightly. They have an argument and won’t listen to what the other is saying and their relationship is put on the back burner while they reflect on their relationship and what they need to change within themselves.

They came into each other’s lives when they least expected it and have healed each other immensely and continued to do so until the very end of the book.

I loved Love Under the Stars by Kris Abbott. The small town of Hicks Creak is something else and the rumor mill running it isn't for the weak . And despite of it you'll love it. Because that small town has a lot of secrets that give it the right amount of suspense. And I have to say that's maybe one of the few small town romances where the brother doesn't mind if his best friend dates his sister. Shocking, I know. Anyway Hicks Creak has drama in spades and it's coming from all sides. And that meet cute between Derek and Amber was sweet, swoony and unforgettable. And Amber is Derek's daughter's teacher. Oh , and his late wife was her high school bully. Go figure. The tension and the slow burn between them was oh so bitter sweet. They both were attracted to each other. But Derek was suspicious of Amber's motives and was so grumpy and cold in the beginning. Amber won him over without trying and charmed his children with her sunny personality. Basically Amber was everything his late wife Sharon wasn't. Then the suspense is in full swing . Amber hears something she doesn't have to hear . When she gathered the courage to tell Derek his reaction wasn't appropriate. Because the truth doesn't add up to what he knows. When all past secrets come to light he's struggling to accept the truth and is harsh and cruel to Amber. Later he apologized to her. And I expected more grovelling but that grand gesture at a wedding counts. So he was easy of the hook. And he was scolded by his daughter and that moment was chef's kiss. Amber had quite a relationship with his children and it was so effortless and easy. She was just there for them . I was glad that Derek managed to see and fix his mistakes and they got their happily ever after as a family. And there was poetic justice in it given the history all those people shared. Loved the sneak peaks from favorite characters from the first book in the series. If you love small town romance you don't want to miss this one.

**Teacher and Single Dad**

"Love Under the Stars" is the second book in the Hick’s Creek series, and it's a delightful read! Amber and Derek's love story has its share of bumps along the way, but it ultimately leads to a sweet happily ever after (HEA). After being cheated on and manipulated by her ex-boyfriend, Amber returns home to be closer to her family. While she’s back, she helps her best friend plan her wedding and dives into teaching fourth grade.

Derek is a single dad and a grieving widower, juggling the challenges of raising his two wonderful kids, Eric and Casey. And guess what? Casey is in Amber's class this year! Amber totally understands the struggles Derek and his kids have faced, which helps her navigate his sometimes hot-and-cold behavior. As time goes on, Derek starts to let his guard down and allows Amber into his life. Together, they heal and grow, making their relationship even stronger.

The writing is engaging, and the characters are so relatable and likable! Their romance develops as a slow burn, allowing us to really get to know each other, yet the story moves quickly enough that you might find yourself reading it all in one sitting! There are some twists, a little mystery, and just the right amount of spice to keep you turning the pages.

You can easily enjoy this book on its own, but since this was my first in the series, I’m already excited to go back and read the first book in the series! Overall, it’s a fantastic love story that beautifully weaves everything together, and I can’t wait for the next book in the Hick's Creek series!

Derek and Amber unexpectedly run into one another at a winery while she’s back in Hicks Creek to shop for a wedding dress for her best friend Bree’s upcoming wedding. He kisses her in an attempt to evade his ongoing date. After discussing the kiss with her, something changes within him, and he dons a facade, concealing his feelings, and departs.

Amber has returned to Hicks Creek, where she teaches fourth grade, while Derek operates an organic farm and manages the local apple orchard. They have two wonderful children, a daughter named Casey and a son named Eric. It turns out that Casey is Amber's student, and their second encounter at the parents' "meet the teacher night" doesn't go very well.

Derek is a widowed father raising his two amazing children, Eric and Casey, while navigating the difficulties of being a single parent. And can you believe it? Casey is attending Amber's class this year! Amber fully comprehends the challenges that Derek and his children have encountered, which aids her in managing his occasionally fluctuating behavior. As time passes, Derek gradually lowers his defenses and invites Amber into his life. United, they recover and develop, enhancing their bond further.

The prose is captivating, and the characters are incredibly relatable and likable! Their relationship evolves gradually, giving us the chance to truly understand one another, while the narrative progresses swiftly enough that you might end up finishing it in a single sitting! There are several surprises, a touch of intrigue, and just enough excitement to keep you flipping through the pages.

I’m a sucker for a heartfelt romance—throw in a small-town setting, a widowed dad of two, and a heroine with a secret past, and I’m all in. Kris Abbott completely delivers in Love Under the Stars, the second book in the Hicks Creek series, with a story that is equal parts emotional and enchanting.

Widower Derek wasn’t looking for a second chance at love—especially not with his daughter’s fourth-grade teacher. But fate has other plans. That teacher? Amber, the woman he shared a single, unforgettable kiss with weeks earlier… back when they were just strangers.

Amber has recently ended a relationship and returned home, happy to be teaching at the very school she once attended. The last thing she expects is to come face to face with her mystery man on the first day of school—only now he’s a grumpy (yet handsome) dad with two kids and more emotional baggage than she bargained for.

As the story unfolds, Amber’s secret from her school days is revealed, adding a deeply emotional twist that hits hard. Watching Derek tentatively navigate his way back to love is nothing short of breathtaking. He stumbles a few times (don’t we all?), but it only made me root for him more. His children add the perfect heartwarming touch, and Amber is truly the ideal leading lady—strong, compassionate, and just the right amount of vulnerable.

This book is full of heart, depth, and second chances. Abbott crafts a story that’s not only romantic but emotionally resonant. If you love small-town romances with real-life challenges, endearing kids, and an unforgettable HEA, Love Under the Stars will absolutely steal your heart.

Love Under the Stars is a beautifully crafted small-town romance filled with warmth, chemistry, and just the right touch of suspense. Amber, a compassionate 4th grade teacher, returns home for a fresh start and crosses paths with Derek, a widowed single dad who’s been struggling to move forward. From the start, Amber brings light into his life, bonding effortlessly with his children—especially his daughter, Casey. Their slow-burn love story is full of heart, hope, and unforgettable moments, leading to a powerful journey of healing and second chances. Kris Abbott weaves a story that is both emotional and uplifting while keeping you firmly planted on the edge of your seat.

I enjoyed Derek's relationship with his kids, despite him being such a grump with a short fuse in other areas of his life. Additionally, I loved that Eric kind of called his dad on being with Amber, without calling him on it, you know? I loved the bond that Amber built with Casey as well, even though in the beginning I was perturbed by how nosy she was as a teacher. Casey had just lost her mom, the child obviously is dealing with some stuff, it's not rocket science. It made me like her a little bit less and likewise Derek's inability to control his temper made it hard for me to want him to win, you know? The ending of the story I would have liked a more solid apology on his behalf. But I am happy it all wrapped up nicely.

Happy release day @krisabbottauthor ! I loved this couple so much, and I can’t wait for everyone else to meet them!

Love Under the Stars is the second book in the Hicks Creek series, but can be read as a standalone. This’s a grumpy x sunshine, single dad, second chance, forbidden romance between Amber and Derek.

I loved that Amber has such a big heart. She only ever wants what’s best for the people she loves, even if they don’t see it that way yet. She’ll do anything to protect them and make them happy, to the point where she needs to learn to step back and not try to fix everything (don’t worry, she does lol). I think so many people will relate to her character and love her journey as she grows to love this little family.

If you love a grumpy hero, you will fall head over heels for Derek. It’s easy to feel for him as he’s a single parent to two adorable children, everything he does is for them. I loved watching him open up to Amber, letting her into their lives in a way he hasn’t let anyone else in a long time. He really loves their small town and the family they’ve created, and it made everyone feel that much more real.

Thank you so much to @krisabbottauthor and @theauthor.agency for this gorgeous arc!

“There’s something about her—her warmth, her wit—that feels like a spark in the darkness I’ve been living in.”

Derek and Amber took me on one heck of an emotional ride with their story. I fell in love with Hicks Creek in book one and couldn’t wait to go back there.

One aspect I loved is that these two are completely new characters. Amber moves back to her hometown after being in the northeast for some years. Small town living is what she is made for.
The way her and Derek meet had me hooked so dang fast. I love a brother’s best friend story and that ended up being a lovely surprise for me.

Derek has been widowed for about three years and had no intentions of putting himself out there, until Amber crossed paths with him. I love how focused he is on his kids and farm, they are his everything. Is he surly and grumpy sometimes? Yup, but that just made me adore him even more. Watching his walls crumble because of Amber was one of my favorite things about them.

All throughout the story there is a bit of suspense thrown into the plot and when the truth is finally revealed it os clear that Amber was totally meant to end up in Derek’s life. She is 100% what his kids and him needed in their lives.

Ms. Abbott tells a wonderful story of learning to trust all over again and putting one’s faith into another’s hands. Derek and Amber help each other heal from parts of their pasts. She is most definitely the sunshine to his grumpy!

MMC Derek and FMC Amber meet at a winery when she is back in her hometown visiting her best friend, Bree. Derek kisses Amber while trying to ditch his current date. He explains the situation to Amber, and then walks away. Amber ends up moving back home and is teaching fourth grade. Derek’s daughter ends up being in Amber’s class. Their next disastrous meeting occurs at parent teacher night. Both have emotional baggage – Derek is a widower and Amber has a cheating ex and the words and actions of a childhood bully that she can’t get out of her head. Derek’s defense is a wall of grumpy, but Amber’s “kill him with kindness” attitude causes him to let Amber in. There’s a bit of suspense/intrigue to the story as someone is sabotaging the orchard and Derek’s former mother in law has it out for him. The characters had good chemistry and they had deep conversations, as well as fun banter. However, the characters also would have disagreements and absolutely ignore what the other person is saying and then they take some time apart. This was sort of annoying. They did get their HEA and the conclusion was satisfying.

This is book two of the Hick Creek Series <3

I absolutely love small town single parent romance. Kris was completely emotional writing had me glued to my kindle.
Derek is a single dad who tragically lost his wife now he has to try to raise his kids and run his family farm. Amber comes home looking for a simple life, healing from her own relationship troubles. With Amber being Derek's daughter teacher there is no avoiding her and their chemistry as much as he fights it.
This book has drama, suspense, intrigue and slow-burn chemistry. I will say I prefer more grovelling but I always want more govelling after being so cruel. And let's be clear Derek is a giant jerk with trust issues. And the kids are great. This is a case of trusting your partner and listening to them. I really enjoyed this book as much as I raged, screamed and cursed. This was a very emotionally charged book and I love it.

Amber and Derek completely won my heart! From the moment these two met, I knew their story would be amazing.

Derek is raising his two kids on his own after losing his wife, and is still grieving her loss. When he kisses Amber, it ignites something inside him though he tries to hide his feelings. With Amber being his daughter’s teacher, it makes it even more impossible to avoid her and his feelings.

Amber has just came back to her hometown for her friend’s wedding and ended up getting offered her dream job. Her run-ins with a handsome stranger leave her perplexed, especially when she meets the father of one of her students and finds out the stranger is Derek.

There were a few twists in this story that kept me glued to the pages. And I liked the challenges that Derek and Amber had to face and how they handled them together. Their relationship was a slow build up but the way Derek was willing to do what ever it took to be with Amber was the sweetest.

This book was a solid read. I enjoyed both Derek and Amber's characters. They both came into the story with their own relationship baggage which added an interesting dynamic to the story. I really enjoyed Derek's children, his daughter's and Amber's relationship was sweet, especially considering Amber was her teacher.

The suspense aspect was written in an interesting way. We didn't have to figure out who did it, we got to see how the characters reacted to finding out, who did it, which we already knew. The other interesting aspect was that Derek was a widower, his former wife was a bully to Amber when they were both in school, and also Amber's brother and Derek were good friends.

I felt the 3rd act breakup went on a little longer than I wanted. But the grand gesture was really good.

For not having read the first one, I was able to jump in easily and didn't feel like I was missing anything.

I was drawn to this one because it's small town single dad romance. Then add in grumpy/sunshine I couldn't resist. I loved Amber. The world needs more teachers like her. She puts her whole heart into her job. Her dreams are coming true being a teacher in her hometown, but it's a bumpy start with one her her student's dads. I wasn't a huge fan of how Derek acted towards Amber in the beginning, but we slowly see him thaw. His kids are such a delight. His son may be twelve, but he has an old soul. His daughter is such a cutie. I really enjoyed watching Amber and Derek's love journey. There were a few characters that needed a swift visit from karma. I couldn't believe their behavior. Truly some nasty people. It may be a road with several bumps, but the beautiful outcome makes it all worth it.

3.75 - 4 stars.

This is the first book in this series that I have read and I really felt for these two, they were both struggling inside because of things that had happened in the past, things that they hadn't really dealt with and they needed to talk about them but didn't really do that either, which was a little sad to see and a little frustrating for me as a reader as for any relationship to survive there needs to be good communication.

I liked these two together but the push and pull and mixed signals were a little confusing, however once these two opened up they made everything better. There were a couple of places that I would have liked a little more personally, but nothing that stopped me from enjoying their story. I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC.

This was a new-to-me author and for a first read, I really enjoyed it!

I love a single dad romance, grumpy meets peppy and sunshine - yes please. Plus a smalltown? I'm all in. This was a very cute read with a little suspense and mystery wrapped in to keep you on your toes.

Derek is definitely a grump and he feels he should not be interested in his daughter's teacher but can't help but be drawn to her and how great she is with his kids.

Amber is extra bubbly and so great with kids. She figures out how to bring Derek's daughter back out of her shell after her mother's death and warms her way into their lives.

Both of them have baggage and Derek is dealing with troubles on his farm that bring in the suspense to the story.

Thank you to The Author Agencies and Kris Abbot for this ARC read! It was great to pick up a new author and I can't wait to read more!

Derek & Amber meet in a very wine-y way 🍷—and let’s just say, their first kiss? A total surprise smooch that shakes them both up! 😳💋

Derek’s a devoted single dad to two adorable kiddos 👨‍👧‍👦, still healing after losing his wife. Amber’s fresh out of a bad relationship and just starting to find herself again ✨.

Cue falling for the orchard charm, Derek’s sweet kids, and maybe even Derek himself… until a twist: his late wife? Amber’s high school bully 😮.

With meddling in-laws 👵🧓, emotional baggage, and a whole lot of orchard drama, Amber and Derek’s path to love isn’t smooth—but it’s so worth it.

Expect found family, slow healing, heartfelt moments, and a happily ever after that made me swoon under the stars ✨.

If you love small-town romance, single dad stories, and second chances with a sprinkle of spice and lots of heart—this one’s for you!

When Amber and Derek run into each other, it turns out they are more connected than they realize, as his best friend is her brother; she is also his daughter’s teacher. However, they get off on the wrong foot, and Derek has no problem showing that to Amber, especially when she realizes his daughter is bored in class. Derek runs an orchard on his late wife’s family property, and the issues he is having there are ramping up. Can he trust Amber enough to let his guard down, and can Amber trust that he is different from others in her past to act on their attraction? The author was right that there is something about looking at the night sky from home versus everywhere else, but there were some continuity problems in this story, like with Bree. However, it was nice that Amber’s brother only wanted what was best for his sister and best friend. This was a lighter, quick read.

ARC Review

Tropes
Single dad
She’s his daughter’s teacher
Grumpy/Sunshine
Small town

What I liked-
I really loved the setting, especially the small town, the farm/orchard. The characters were easy to like. The children were written really well and added to the story.

The only thing I wasn’t a big fan of was the miscommunication/conflict.
Obviously books need conflict and resolution and without giving away any spoilers I’d say this conflict was made into something much bigger than it should have been and the resolution took longer than necessary.
That being said, the ending was cute, sweet and very small town romance vibe!
I’d say if you like a single dad, small town and lovable FMC the this would be a good book to read!

Love Under The Stars is single dad and widower, Derek Townson and Amber Shafer’s small town romance and its book two in the Hicks Creek Series. I was drawn in from the first chapter and there was no putting down until the final word was read.
Amber has returned home for a new start but she had no idea how her life was about to change. As soon as she met Derek she knew he was the one but he should be off limits because he is her brothers best friend and he is dad to one of her students…..
Problem is the heart wants what the heart wants and rules don’t come into play. So what happens when lines are crossed.
I loved this well written, entertaining story, I fell hard and fast for Derek and I adored Amber but it was an adorable little girl named Casey that stole the show.

Amber returns home after a horrible relationship. She unexpectedly runs into a man who kisses her to prove to his date he isn't into her. Thus starts the story of Amber and Derek.
This is a sweet story of two people who weren't looking to find someone but unexfind each other.
Amber is trying to regain herself after a bad relationship. Being home is great but there are memories of her bully at every turn.
When she finds out the bully was married with kids but passed away a few years back.
As Amber and Derek play the game of getting to know each other, Amber discovers her nemesis was married to Derek.
There is a bit of mystery attached to this love story.
And Derek and Amber must both deal with their insecurities from past relationships. I really enjoyed this story.

Derek is a single father and owns his own orchard. Amber is a teacher and has Derek's daughter Casey. When Derek and Amber meet sparks fly and things don't go well between them. However, she is determined to get through and is nice to him no matter how he is towards her. Slowly things grow between them and it seems to go well. Until Amber learns something that could change things between her and Derek. Can they make it to their happy ending? Or will outside influences come between them?

This is a great story that will draw you in from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book for Bad Boy Update.

This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed it.
This book follows Amber, a kind hearted teacher and Derek who runs a farm/orchard. Derek is a widow and a single dad trying to raise his two kids and doing the best he can. Their meet was cute. He randomly sees beautiful Amber and kisses her only to find out shortly later that she is his daughter’s new teacher. Amber was sweet and like able but I had a hard time liking Derek. He was so back and forth and beyond moody to the fact that at times I don’t feel like he deserved Amber.

I may go back and read the first book in the series and do a re-read to see if my opinion changes.
Thank you to the author for the arc.

This is such a great read.
Amber is back in her home town and starting a new job at the local school.
Derek is doing his best bringing up his 2 children and running the family business after the death of his wife.
When they first meet he kisses her to get out of a bad date. The second time they meet it turns out he's the father of one of her pupils.
The chemistry between them is off the charts and soon they can't stay away from each other. They are perfect together but both have insecurities but can they work through things or will it tear them apart.
A must read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

This is second Kris Abbott book and second in the series. The first book of the series is crossroads to love. Some characters do overlap so I recommend through interconnected stand alone to read the books in the order they were published. The MMC is Derek who story entwines with FMC Amber in this character driven narrative. Author Kira Abbott excels at the prefect and unpredictable balance between a character driven narrative and captivating plot lines. I highly recommend the five star read Love under the stars, check out this coming releasing on May 6th.
