I’ve read my fair share of “how to write a novel” books, but Writing IT genuinely stands out. As a collection of Ed Adams’ Novel, Plot, and Character books, this 537-page guide is incredibly comprehensive without ever feeling overwhelming.

What I appreciated most is that it avoids rigid formulas. Instead of telling you there’s only one way to structure a story, it focuses on practical, actionable advice for finding your own voice and rhythm. The sections on overcoming writer’s block and maintaining narrative tension were particularly helpful they didn’t just state the problem, but offered real exercises to work through it.

It truly feels like a handbook meant to be kept on your desk, not just read and shelved. Whether you’re struggling with character depth or trying to figure out the modern publishing landscape, this book has a chapter for you. If you’ve felt stuck in the past, this toolkit provides the roadmap to finally get that manuscript finished. Highly recommended.

One of the best parts of the book is how it breaks down complex ideas like plot structure, character development, and pacing into simple, easy-to-understand lessons. The tips on overcoming writer’s block were especially useful, and the practical exercises make it easy to apply what you learn right away.

I also appreciated how the author encourages creativity instead of forcing rigid rules, which makes the book feel both motivating and refreshing. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced writer, this guide provides valuable insights that can truly improve your storytelling skills.

I've bought more writing books than I care to admit, and most of them end up gathering dust on a shelf after a single read. Writing IT is different. This one has permanent residence on my desk, with sticky notes marking pages I keep coming back to. The collection format bringing together Adams' Novel, Plot, and Character books means I'm not flipping between three separate volumes when I need guidance. Whether I'm wrestling with a scene that feels flat or trying to figure out why my protagonist isn't connecting with beta readers, I know exactly where to turn. At 537 pages, it's substantial, but it never feels like a textbook. It feels like a toolkit, and I've been using it constantly throughout my current draft.

Plot has always been my strength, but even I found new insights in this collection. Adams' approach to plot development is flexible enough to accommodate different types of stories while providing enough structure to prevent meandering. I appreciated his emphasis on engaging twists and satisfying resolutions two elements I've struggled with in the past. The framework he provides has become my go-to for outlining, and I can already tell it's going to save me countless hours of revision down the road. Whether plot comes naturally to you or it's your biggest struggle, this section has something valuable to offer.

I'm the kind of writer who needs ongoing support, not just a one-time read. Writing IT has become that support system. I keep it on my desk and refer to it constantly. When I'm starting a new project, I revisit the initial concept chapters. When I hit a rough patch, I turn to the sections on overcoming obstacles. When I finish a draft, I pull up the self-editing guidance. Adams has created something rare: a writing guide that's useful at every stage of the process, from first idea to final polish. If you're serious about writing a novel, this book belongs on your desk, not your shelf.

Some writing books focus entirely on the artistic side follow your inspiration, trust your instincts which is lovely but not always helpful when you're stuck on page 50 with no idea what happens next. Others are so technical they suck the joy out of writing entirely. Writing IT strikes a beautiful balance. Adams honors the creative, intuitive aspects of storytelling while giving you the practical tools to actually finish what you start. He never makes you feel like following structure means sacrificing artistry. That balance has been exactly what I needed to move forward with confidence.

I appreciated the breakdown of modern publishing options. So many writing guides ignore this part or offer outdated advice. This one actually helped me map out a realistic path forward.
Finally, a writing guide that acknowledges writer's block is real and offers actual strategies instead of just saying "push through it." The obstacles-into-opportunities approach shifted my entire mindset.

This book helped me stop obsessing over getting it perfect on the first draft and just write. The mindset shift alone was worth the read. I've purchased the Novel, Plot, and Character books separately, and having them collected in one volume is incredibly convenient. Everything I need is right here on my desk.

I love that this book doesn't treat storytelling like a formula to be solved. Adams emphasizes creativity while still giving you the structural guidance you need to actually finish a manuscript. The success stories sprinkled throughout kept me motivated on days when I doubted myself. It's reassuring to know other writers faced similar struggles and found their way through.
