Pine Ridge Ranch #2

Charlie Takes a Chance

Rate this book
When Charlie is hired to repair a lodge in Pine Ridge, she's stuck sharing a house with the grumpy ranch manager. And he is not happy she's here.

Charlie is exhausted—tired of being told she’s “too much” and sick of boyfriends who stick around as long as a temporary tattoo.

So when her best friend’s fiancé offers her a job fixing up his family’s lodge in Pine Ridge, Oregon, Charlie jumps at the chance. A picturesque mountain town sounds like the perfect escape—a chance to recharge, and maybe find a little peace.

But her arrival is anything but peaceful.

On her first night, Charlie ends up in a physical (and completely not her fault) altercation with the broody—and irritatingly handsome—ranch manager, Max St. James. He mistakes her for a burglar; she mistakes him for a bear. Not exactly the restful start to a stay.

Things go from awkward to unbearable when Charlie learns she’ll be sharing the ranch bunkhouse with Max. He’s grumpy, guarded, and definitely not thrilled about sharing his space. And yet, despite his reluctance, Max can’t help but notice that Charlie’s feisty spirit might be just what he’s been missing.
Charlie isn’t afraid to challenge Max—or to get under his skin. And even though she loves to annoy him, he's the first person she can be herself with.

But as sparks fly and the holiday deadline looms, Max starts to realize Charlie might be exactly what he’s been looking for all along.

Can Max convince her that she’s not “too much” after all—and that Pine Ridge might just be where she belongs?

- small town
- grumpy x sunshine
- forced proximity
- closed door
- there's dogs in it!

okay this was just so cute and wholesome. H is grumpy yet sweet and h is independent and fierce and isn't afraid to speak her mind. it had lots of fun banter, swoony moments, i absolutely enjoyed reading it.

safety- it's closed door so no more than kisses, H has an ex who is now engaged to his brother, they show up when he goes home to see his parents so he just up and leaves and h has an ex who thinks women shouldn't be in male dominated field, he appears towards the end but H puts him in place. No ow/ om drama.

This book was a fun, Christmas adjacent read. I didn't love the amount of swears throughout the book, and I felt like the storyline moved rather quickly without a ton of development. I liked the characters, but it sometimes felt a little cliche.

“Charlie sticks her tongue out at me. When I have an almost irresistible urge to push it back in, I realize we’re doing a lot of touching for two strangers who just met last night. And I have the uncomfortable realization that I like it.”

Charlie and Max have a volatile and hilarious first meet that is almost explosive, and their combustible interactions and fiery chemistry just doesn’t stop. There’s nothing I love more than the banter between two instantaneous enemies who have an underlying zip of connection that keeps them from being mean. The barbs and wit that are flung about like muck in a stall had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion, and let me just say, I snuggled right in for a super entertaining day of reading about these two and their adventures on a small town ranch.

Of course when layers start to get peeled back, the uncomfortableness emerges. “Smiling Max is a dangerous Max” and “I need to find her annoying. It’s the only way I’ll make it through this month” were phrases that lit it up.

A spunky and sassy heroine paired with a gruff and grumpy cowboy, mixed with a side of lovable dogs and friends who care, along with mistletoe kisses and a spritely grandma, make this one a bundle of fun and swoon. I couldn’t get enough!

Reader’s Notes:
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Charlie & Max’s points of view
-multiple kisses mentioned to have tongue (about 3 mentions)
-there are four uses of the ‘a’ word for donkey

Review:
This was a lot of fun to read! 😂 I loved getting to know Charlie, Max, & the other residents of Pine Ridge! I hope we get to know them more in future books! I loved seeing Charlie in a field we don’t normally see women in for books (contractor) and that it led to some interesting tension between her and Max during the beginning of their time together. I loved the constant updates being given to Magnolia & Nash through Charlie & Max. Magnolia & Nash were most definitely up to some matchmaking (though it may have mainly been Magnolia through Nash 😂) during their phone calls trying to make sure everything was going well.

I can’t wait to see what else Carina has in her head to write next!

Summary:
Charlie is done with boyfriends who don’t stick around or think she’s too much. Luckily after her most recent ex breaks up with her, Charlie is offered a job in fixing up her best friend’s fiancé’s ranch hours away from said ex. Not only will it give her the space she needs from anyone, but it’ll also give her a chance to use her skills with someone who appreciates her and her work. But things aren’t as perfect as Charlie thought they’d be. And it all starts with the unexpected & grumpy ranch manager thinking she’s a burglar…

Max likes his quiet out on the ranch, so when he discovers someone trying to go into the main house he’s determined to kick them out. And though it turns out that Charlie is not only allowed to be on the property but also meant to be there, Max wants to stay as far from her as he can. And thankfully she seems to want the same thing. That is until his best friend and his fiancé convinces her to stay in the bunkhouse with Max due to how badly the other building needs repairs…

I just finished reading this book today and I freaking love Max and Charlie! I loved their chemistry and their banter throughout the whole book and just thought they were the cutest!

When Charlie heads to a small town in Oregon to fix up the lodge of a family friend, she doesn’t expect to have an unpleasant welcome from the ranch manager, Max. Nor does she plan on being his housemate in the bunkhouse when the main house has no water or heat. She also doesn’t have any plans to fall for Mr. Grumpy Ranch Manager!

These two are beyond adorable! Charlie is such a strong, independent girl—what do you expect from a female contractor? I love that she could take care of herself hold her own! Max was so cute and ornery! I loved seeing him soften towards Charlie and to become protective of her!

Such a fun book!! If you haven’t read it, add it to your TBR today!!

“You’re not so bad if I ignore your long list of faults.”

Charlie is recovering from a break up and jumps at the chance to get out of town for a while. Max knows Charlie is coming, but isn’t expecting a woman. When he sees her trying to get into the lodge at the ranch, he’s sure she’s breaking in. I loved this book! Enemies to lovers is a favorite of mine, and Carina wrote a good one. I love the tension and hilarious fights between Charlie and Max! There were other moments that made me laugh, too. I believe this is the first in a new series, and I’m excited to see what other stories come out of this small town.

Ok so I was determined to finish on a better note yesterday after reading that other book😆 and honestly I’m going to say I did. It makes me sad when I have to rate a book lower simply because of the content..and maybe I should just idk rate them high and put a notice but I can’t bring myself to do so:(
So anyways! This was awesome and I was up till 2am bc I had to finish it😂 it was funny and cute 🤷🏻‍♀️if some of those scenes would’ve been turned down it would probably be a 4 maybe 4.5 but since they weren’t I’m going to have to go with 3.6🙃

What a hoot! Carina Taylor really knows how to write humor and Charlie Takes a Chance was no exception.

Charlie is a unique female main character who is a contractor and is sent to fix a ranch house. She is surprised to find Max- the ranch manager- living there too. Max is not too pleased to share his space with Charlie, which results in some fun banter and altercations.

I really liked these characters and their back-and-forth encounters. I loved being on the ranch with them and the cows! There were so many fun scenes and moments with these two together.

This book was very entertaining and fun but I gave it four stars because it didn’t feel very polished. A few inconsistencies in the plot made the whole thing not flow as well as some of her other books. I’m still a huge fan of her writing and I love the characters she creates.

This is a low-drama, fun romcom that I’d recommend for a quick, sweet read.

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down! It was a fun and easy read! It made me feel all of their emotions. I was giggling the whole book! The writing was done really well. The character development was great. I loved Charlie and how strong and independent she is! She was a great FMC. She spoke her mind and very relatable. Max completely won me over from the very start. I love how playful and flirty he was with Charlie. He’s a hard working man who was also fun and flirty. Their relationship was so fun to watch develop. I loved the banter between them! It was so relatable. I would love if there was more to their story! This was my first book by Carina Taylor but this definitely won’t be my last one from her.

4.5⭐️ ARC Review: I have yet to be disappointed by a Carina Taylor book. Her writing always hooks me from the very beginning, and obviously this one was no different.

The banter was bantering, but not in an annoying over the top way. It was perfect. Charlie and Max were perfect. I loved their relationship and the situation they were in. It involves lots of page time with them together, and I was here for it! I loved their conversations and their realness with who they are. It was just so much fun. I actually chuckled multiple times.

There are also some side characters that I truly hope get their own story. Like maybe a marriage of convenience? PLEASE! Because I need more books in this little world!

It is the perfect read, not necessarily just for the holidays, but for all of winter. Loved it.

~When Charlie is hired to repair a lodge in Pine Ridge, she’s stuck sharing a house with the grumpy ranch manager. And he is not happy she’s here…

“You can calm yourself down, St. James. I’m not here to trap you in a relation-ship. I’m just here to rebuild a bathroom.”

-Charlie Takes A Chance, is an enjoyable story with delightful witty banter, humor, and relatable fun characters. You can expect a dual POV, sparks of chemistry, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, tension, crazy shenanigans, and of course, a very happy ending. I enjoyed the small-town setting set in Oregon during the winter and a bit of Christmas vibes. Watching our main characters, Mac and Charlie go from greatly disliking each other to something more as they were themselves was so much fun and also very sweet. Both have had previous relationships ships that went badly, so watching them grow, help one another, and be able to be themselves no matter what, was great. This is a quick but fun story to enjoy reading.

This might be my new favorite book by Carina Taylor, I just loved Charlie and Max!

The banter between Charlie and Max is just perfect and their little ‘territorial war’ was hilarious! Even when they started to get used to and even to like each other, they never stopped being a bit snarky with each other. The scene with the broomstick had me laughing so much, I was afraid to wake up my kids because I was shaking with silent laughter next to them.
I won’t spoil it by quoting the scene, just read it! I promise you, you have never read a “she cares for him when he’s sick”-scene like that!

But this book was more than just fun, it was extremely sweet and the characters felt so real and genuine. They were both healing from previous breakups and even though they are not shy or seem insecure, they are definitely vulnerable when it comes to their worth in a relationship. Oh I just loved them together, the perfect grumpy sunshine pairing in a sweet small town and the book also has adorable four legged side characters (of course I’m talking about Larry and Jim, but don’t forget Cecil the calf!)

It’s a closed door romance with detailed kisses and mild innuendo and if you love a good enemies to lovers romance and are comfortable with spice level 2-3 (descriptive kisses with tongue), I highly recommend Carina Taylor’s books, but especially this one. Like I said, I think it’s my favorite book of her’s right now!

ARC REVIEW:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Charlie, a contractor, has agreed to fix up a lodge in the small town of Pine Ridge, Oregon. The idea of working in a remote location sounded like the perfect way to heal from heartbreak. But when she discovers she will not be alone, things start to look less and less appealing. Will sharing space with the grumpy ranch manager reinforce her disdain for men, or will it remind her that there are still some good ones out there?

Carina Taylor’s Charlie Takes A Chance proves how feisty banter mixed with sizzling chemistry makes for the ideal enemies-to-lovers story!

The book starts with a bang, literally! Romantic comedies are know for their meet-cutes. Taylor switching the meet-cute out for a physical run-in was genius. It set the stage for Charlie and Max’s contentious relationship.

While they definitely pushed each other’s buttons at the beginning of the story, they eventually learned to channel their differences into building each other up. Max was instrumental to Charlie overcoming negative self-talk. She had bought into the lies her ex believed about her; such as being too much, weird, and directionless. We need more MMC pumping up the FMC!!

If you are looking to read a love story filled with green flags, I highly recommend giving Carina Taylor’s Charlie Takes A Chance a read.

Special thanks to Netgalley, Lit and Write LLC, and Carina Taylor for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is such a fun book! Charlie goes to the small town of Pine Ridge to renovate a ranch house owned by her roommate's fiancé before Christmas. She has a meet disaster with Max, the ranch manager, that has them both frustrated with each other (but will have you cracking up). We end up with a forced proximity situation when Charlie and Max end up as temporary roommates. Their banter was so good! So good, y'all! I loved watching as it shifted from frustration to teasing and flirting.

This one releases 1/30! Keep your eyes peeled; you won't want to miss it!

Favorite Quotes:

👰‍♀️ “Maybe it's time to give an arranged marriage a try. His dog liked me."
"My dogs like you," Max snaps back.
"Are you suggesting I marry you, then?"

😏 "Max, I'm halfway scared if I kiss you under the mistletoe that you'll bite me."
"I only bite if asked."

😂 "He's not, well. I don't think he's interested--" I cough as Grandma studies me intently. "That is to say, we're not actually a thing."
"I could taste what kind of toothpaste you used this morning; I'm pretty sure we're a thing." Max's deep voice shoots through the center of my chest.

Charlie Takes a Chance is a small-town, enemies-to-lovers romance. It starts with Charlie going to Pine Ridge, a small town where she was hired by her best friend Magnolia’s fiancé to renovate their house before Christmas. She meets Max, the grumpy ranch manager, who she ends up living with while she renovates the main house. I initially thought that they were both immature and stubborn fighting for their own space, but I eventually grew into it and found their banter cute when it turned to teasing. The two learned to eventually tolerate and care for each other when they admitted they were attracted to each other.

I love how the story has such a low-key drama that it was such a breeze to read. This is a fun romcom to pick up when you’re in need of a light and fuzzy romance.

This was a fun and enjoyable read. Charlies Takes a Chance is written by Carina Taylor, and it is a new release written for the readers. Charlie and Max were enemies to lovers but they fit each other so well.
I liked getting to know Charlie and Max better. They both had some scars from their past and were wary of getting to know others. I love how they pushed each other but still supported each other. Their banter was quick and I enjoyed reading about their interactions. As they got to know each other, they learned to care for each other and see beneath the walls they had crafted.
This was a quick and easy read. It was low stress and made me smile. I liked the characters, the side characters were especially fun. I like the relationship between the friends and the small town was an added bonus. I see hints of new books. I would recommend this book to those who want a quick, easy read. Charlie Takes a Chance is a closed door romantic comedy.

I have said it before, and I will continue to repeat it again and again... absolutely no one does enemies to lovers banter quite like Carina Taylor! She is an absolute master at it! Charlie Takes a Chance is absolutely no exception! Right from their very first meeting, I couldn't get enough of the back and forth between Max and Charlie--- it was just too perfect. And when it turned flirty!? Even better! Truly, these two were just such a blast to read. The banter, the chemistry and the way that they both gave each other a hard time while also looking out for each other... it all just worked. While this story does take place over the course of the holiday season, and there are definitely a few moments that have some subtle holiday vibes, it really isn't the focus of their story and doesn't feel too much like a holiday read at all. It's quick and fun and one you absolutely won't want to miss adding to your TBR.

Charlies Takes a Chance is a closed-door romance with kisses only, though some of the kisses are a little more detailed. There is also some minor language and innuendo throughout as well.

“The fact is, Charlie. I want you. I want you too much. And it’s the reason I should stay away. And it’s the reason I can’t stay away."

When Charlie is hired to repair a lodge in Pine Ridge, she’s stuck sharing a bunkhouse with the grumpy ranch manager. And he is not happy she’s here. But as sparks fly and the holiday deadline looms, Max starts to realize Charlie might be exactly what he’s been looking for all along.

This had all the small town charm with meddling townsfolk who even became quite the force when Charlie needed it. I loved even the tiny back stories we got about some of them.

Max and Charlie had quite the rough start. I loved how once they gave in to their chemistry we got treated to heated kisses and amazing communication.

Although it missed some of the amazing banter I've come to expect with Carina Taylor books, I enjoyed this all the same. Quite the amazing winter read!

Charlie Takes a Chance has the fun humor and quirky characters I love and have come to expect when I pick up a book by Carina Taylor. I liked the dual POV and the happy ending. Charlie is a strong female lead who shines in a non-traditional career. She's soft and fierce at the same time. Max is a little grumpy at first, but the chemistry between him and Charlie sparks from the very start and their kisses were definitely on the swooooony level! I loved all the non-flirting flirting between the two.
I thought the forced proximity was a fun choice with this book. There were a few pieces of the character development and backstories that didn't feel complete or pulled through the story cohesively and I felt like they may have been better left out or needed to be more developed to really have the proper impact in the story. I still had a good time reading this book and enjoyed it. I recommend this book.

I was giggling and smiling the whole entire time I read this story! I ended up reading it so quickly because I couldn’t put it down and just couldn’t get ENOUGH of it! I loved Charlie and Max, the small town feel, and all of the ranch & farming shenanigans!!

I loved how both Charlie and Max had baggage from the past that caused them to be hesitant to be burned again, but yet the slow burn through banter here explores them eventually opening up to one another…and I just adored that. SO much!

Charlie plays a unique character who is strong and intelligent, and not afraid to take on any jobs. Max is the most attractive ranch manager who is so thoughtful and supportive! These two together…boy, the BANTER! I was cracking up half the book. Through the tackling, the very first “meet cute,” the pickle ornament, bad soup, and line dancing, I just could not get enough of this and didn’t want it to end…however I did love the ending as well!!

ARC Review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5’s

Carina Taylor has done it again—Charlie Takes a Chance is the perfect blend of humor, heart, and swoon-worthy romance! This small-town romcom delivers everything I love in a contemporary romance, all while keeping it a clean read.

From the very first page, Taylor pulls readers into a charming ranch setting filled with stubborn cowboys, adorable baby calves, and plenty of four-legged companions (seriously, all the dogs make this even better!). The enemies-to-lovers dynamic is spot-on, with Charlie and her grumpy counterpart sparking all the witty banter and tension you could ask for. Throw in forced proximity and a grumpy-sunshine pairing, and you’ve got a story that keeps you smiling from start to finish.

If you love a fun, feel-good romance set against the backdrop of a working ranch—complete with plenty of heartwarming (and laugh-out-loud) moments—this book is a must-read. Carina Taylor never misses, and Charlie Takes a Chance is no exception!
