Helena Taking the job at Devil’s Ridge Ranch was supposed to be simple: care for a little boy and keep my head down. But the moment I stepped onto this land, I felt the weight of it, the history, the loss, the tension that clings to the air like an approaching storm. And then there’s Silas Hayes. Every glance from him, every brush of his hand, unravels me in ways I haven’t felt in years. Each night he vanishes into the darkness, returning with shadows that only grow deeper in his eyes. It’s clear he’s chasing something, or someone, but whatever it is, it’s destroying him. I came here with my own purpose, one I can’t afford to fail, but Silas makes me want to take risks I can’t explain. And in the quiet moments when the walls between us begin to crumble, I wonder: can I save him before he destroys us both?
Silas There’s blood on my hands, and most days, I can’t remember if it’s meant to cleanse or curse me. This ranch, this land, it used to be my whole world, but now it’s nothing more than a tether, holding me to a life I can’t let go of. And then Helena walked into it, her gaze cutting through my quiet like a whisper I’m too afraid to hear. There’s something about her, something unsettlingly familiar, as though she knows the weight I carry. When I ride into the darkness, I tell myself I’m seeking justice and retribution. But the deeper I go, the less sure I am of who I’m chasing, or who I’ve become. Helena’s presence feels like a reprieve, a reminder of something pure. What will she see when my demons are laid bare? What will I see?
* 3⭐️4🌶️ * Both of these MCs have seriously dark pasts. The Bible and its passages are mixed throughout the book. * Helena gets to devils ridge ranch for the nanny position and meets Silas the widowed dad and his son Kiran. Silas is still extremely devastated about the loss of his wife and Helena has her own tragic past that you find out about right in the beginning during the prologue. * There’s lots of ma’am, sir, pa, miss in this book. Very little house on the prairie ish. * Pouring rain yelling to kissing scene * This book has a mysterious element to it. Silas goes off and comes back bloody. Helena talks to animals and makes it seem like she’s someone else. I feel it’s purposely made to confuse readers on what is real and what is unreal. * This is like a paranormal Christian dark romance. I’m not seeing anyone talk about this. I’m not sure if that’s a spoiler or not but I really don’t think so. It talks about death, spirits, a lot of Bible and Christian talk which I don’t mind. It was strange to have Bible versus on each chapter when they are doing the dirty with eachother. But that didn’t deter me.

First Impressions Whispers of Helena is one of the most unique romances that I have ever read. Although due to the content of the story and how it ends I am not sure I would categorize this as a romance though officially, or if it is, its HIGHLY UNCONVENTIONAL!!! (If you don't mind spoilers, DM me and I can explain it in more detail) It has a strong spiritual tone to it that was beautiful but still had some steam to it but the focus wasn't the spice which was fantastic to read. The focus is their relationship and the deep layers that are revealed throughout it.

What I Loved This book was just about everything that I was looking for and more. I truly appreciated what the author intended to do with this story and I can't wait to see what more she creates because this book was fascinating, deeply layered, beautiful and intricate and so unique. In fact its one of the most original books that I have had a pleasure to ever read. I am going to try to not spoil this too much which is why I am keeping this more simple of a review and less detailed because I think its better to go in without knowing too much what to expect. I loved the journey that we are taken on for these two. We see a beautiful love revealed, there is a gothic/mystical type themes blended in with a religious/spiritual focus that I found refreshing. Very rarely if its not inspirational, do you see this in a regular romance novel and I appreciated it so much. Its not preachy or anything, just an aspect that is part of their lives. I loved seeing them connect, seeing the torment that they both have gone through and the ways in which they work with each other to heal.
What I Struggled With The only thing I could have wished for was a longer ending. It still left me satisfied but I want to see them in their HEA a bit more but I know from the author's note at the end we get that in book 2.
Overall View Whispers of Helena is a breathtaking story that soars into the boundaries of love and destiny in ways the reader won't expect. It combines elements of powerful storytelling, riveting characters who melt your heart, and a story that takes you into leaps of deep love.

You know that feeling when you know whats going to happen but you’re still on the absolute edge of your seat and in shock when it actually does? That is a literal representation of reading this book 😮💨
Helena is sent to the ranch of a widower with a young son, Silas Hayes. She’s to be a nanny of sorts and keep the household running. Upon arrival, not all is what it seems and both Silas and Helena are keeping secrets. As their connection deepens and feelings progress light starts to be shed on both of their pasts and how they could be intertwined. Silas must make a choice on if extracting his revenge is worth the price that must be paid.
My second time reading this book and I enjoyed the ride even more. This story is not like anything else I have read and I doubt I will ever read anything like it again. I loved the gothic aspects along with the religious undertones that truly made such a unique and powerful piece of art. Helena and Silas are beautiful characters and their journey and love are so moving I can barely put it into words. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I highly recommend if you’re looking for something a little different to give this one a try. Thank you so much to Ashley for allowing me to be a beta reader for this truly one of a kind story. And to Luna literary for the eARC for review 🖤
I’m at a loss here. Is it a gothic love story? Sure. A gothic romance… nope! Without giving everything away, I think this book will suffer the same antagonism that another recent book faced when it was marketed as dark romance only for people to read and realize it wasn’t actually HEA.
So that’s what you need to know going in: it isn’t HEA or even HEA for now. It’s a different take on the idea that readers may or may not enjoy, especially because the “HEA” relies so heavily on religion.
Speaking of religion… readers going in should know that there is a heavy, HEAVY emphasis on Christian religious ideas and a very American Catholic idea of salvation and repentance. Initially the inclusion of Bible verses as chapter headings and the FMC always carrying her Bible worked for me and created this moody, gothic vibe but I felt it became heavy handed around the 40% mark and the entire book switched from using religion for the gothic setting to becoming a Christian paranormal story and it lost me.
Would I recommend the book? I’m not sure. It depends heavily on the reader and their comfort levels around certain triggers (religion, child loss, etc) and their acceptance of not receiving a HEA (in any traditional sense).
Thank you to Luna Literary Management and the author for the chance to read early in exchange for an honest review.
I am literally unwell after reading this book. I honestly went into this completely blind besides the fact that this is a gothic cowboy romance and was absolutely stunned speechless by what is written on these pages.
Silas lost his wife years ago and has become a bitter and lost single father. He hires a new nanny to take care of his son but starts to notice weird things happening around the house since she has been there. He is starting to feel things he hasn't felt in years.
Without giving anything away, all I am going to say is I have never read a gothic romance quite like this one. It's a literal masterpiece and the plot twists were absolutely INSANE.
this one comes out on June 6th and you absolutely want to be getting this on your tbr.
Wow. This book was so good! Completely different from anything I’ve ever read.
I really cannot say much without spoilers because there’s all kinds of hidden secrets within this story, but if you’re looking for romantic suspense, gothic cowboy romance vibes, crazy revelations…I highly suggest you pick this up. The writing was amazing and I was hooked from start to finish.
Thank you so much Ashley Warren & Luna for this ARC🤍
ALPHA/ARC REVIEW: HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS!!!! You guys. This book is everything. I've never read anything like it. My first gothic romance, and it definitely won't be my last. Ashley's writing style is one of my favs. It flows beautifully and describes what's happening in the scene so perfectly that not only can I picture exactly what the scene would look like, but the feelings + emotions that come with it too are just done so masterfully. I hope I'm making sense because this story deserves all the love + praise in the world.
This isn't Ashley's first book (check out her Back Water Bay trilogy), but this one is so unique + different from that series that I think it's a real game changer. I could say so much more, but I’m forcing myself to stop because you just need to read it to see for yourself!

“Even if you did, I’d wait for you. I’ll wander this world for a millenia waiting for you. You’re my everything. You’re my sun, my reason, my ruler.”
This book has left me absolutely speechless. I’ve always been a huge fan of Ashley’s writing, and when she announced this new series, I was instantly intrigued. Every update or teaser she dropped had me on the edge of my seat, counting down the days. And the second I started it I could not put it down. The way Ashley developed this story was so captivating. I’m still blown away by the uniqueness. It’s unlike anything I’ve read before.
This book handles some very sensitive topics like the loss of a loved one, the unbearable grief of losing a child, and the deeply personal nature of faith and religious trauma. But Ashley ties these everything together with such care. It all served a purpose and made the emotional journey that much more powerful.
I’m honestly having the hardest time reviewing this without spoiling anything. Because this is absolutely a story you want to go into blind. There are so many layers and elements to this book that summing it into a review feels so hard!
I will say, the beautiful connection between Helena and Silas is so perfectly written. Watching this morally grey man fall for Helena, despite the weight of their past and the secrets that connect them, he was still drawn to her in the most heartbreakingly beautiful way.
Whispers of Helena is raw, unique, and utterly JAW DROPPING. If religious themes in a book don’t bother you, I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s emotional. It’s haunting. It’s powerful.
BETA READ. Infinite stars ! Buckle up for quite a ride on this emotional roller coaster ! A gothic/ dark Cowboy romance, and I’m sure this was the most I’ve cried reading a book. The slow burn at first, the tension between Helena and Silas uuuggghh my heart was beating so fast for them.
Helena is hired as a nanny for Silas’s 6 year old boy Kiran. She arrives to the ranch set to help in anyway she can. Her goal was to make sure the boy and his dad are taking care of. Helena is such a lady, poised, calm and full of grace. On the other hand Silas, is like a wounded animal, in pain, broken and no one can approach him to help.
They are both battling their own demons. Would they succumb to temptation ?
You must keep an open mind reading this love story. Things and people in this tell are not always what they seem. You will fall in love with the side characters, the writing style is enchanting, and there is so many jaw dropping moments, all my flabbers - were -gasted !! The spice was definitely some of the hottest scenes I’ve read😮💨we get all the beloved tropes. Ashley just knows how to make us hot and bothered so effortlessly, the chemistry between the MMCs is so natural , you can’t help but melt for them!
This is a very unique love story. Something vows are made of. I cannot wait to reread it when it’s finally out.
BETA Read: Wow! I’ve never read anything like Whispers of Helena before! The descriptive language throughout this read was perfection. Silas and Helena’s love story was powerful, gut wrenching, and healing. Ashley not only brought the heat but sent me on an emotional rollercoaster with fantastic twist and turns that had me second guessing everything. WOH is an unforgettable story that you will never forget! ♾️
I went into this blind and came out the other side with tears.
This was heart wrenching at times but I loved it, and y’all know me I hate feeling feels. The mystery during the first half of the book and the reveals tore me apart but I just had to keep telling myself there would be a HEA.
There was quite a bit of religion in the book but in an unexpected and well written way, and this is coming from someone who does not believe in god. I actually really enjoyed that aspect of the story and the way it all played out at the end.

✨️Thank you to Ashley and Luna Literary for this ARC for my honest review! This book took me on a wild ride. I was bawling from the prologue 😭. Both of these characters have gone through such tramatic loss. The tension and slow burn were 🔥. I don't want to spoil anything, but the twists and turns in this book had me on the floor. This was unlike anything I've ever read! I definitely recommend it!
I was really invested in this story and these characters until about 60% when I had to mark it DNF. The twists that this story took were too hard to grasp in my opinion. It was marketed as a dark romance which don't get me wrong there were a LOT of darker elements, but it was also oddly religious. Like way more than I would have thought based on the description. I also got very irritated with how Silas acted after learning some truths about his wife. This just wasn't my cup of tea :/
Thank you to Luna Literary and Ashley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I knew from the prologue that this book was going to wreck me. When things started to unravel I was stunned. I feel like this book found me at the right time.
The way Ashley portrays the heaviness of grief and how it can utterly consume you is raw and deeply poetic. I couldn’t stop reading. I loved the paranormal aspect of this book and how the story slowly started to turn, then almost all at once.
My takeaways from this book are that no matter what you’re going through or have been through, you are never alone. Good things are waiting for you.
NOTHING. AND I MEAN NOTHING LIKE I HAVE READ BEFORE. Unbelievable. The tears, the plot twists, all worth it. This story is incredibly unique and beautiful. 😭🥹🖤 I’m not sure how else to express my emotions with this one. Just READ IT.
I don’t know if I can fully wrap my mind around this story yet. But I will say, Ashley poured such depth into this book. I need to sit and reflect on it all….full RTC
This book warmed my morally gray cowboy heart, and at the same time, gave me the suspense I love, adding in the supernatural and paranormal elements I don't usually read. There are also religious themes throughout. All this falls under the umbrella of gothic romance, and the author did a great job pulling it all together.
The book pulled me in quickly with its story. We meet Silas, a struggling rancher, a widowed cowboy, and a father. He misses his wife, loves his son with all he has, and is bound to his land.
Helena arrives at Devils Ridge Ranch as the nanny to Silas' son. She is a spitfire and an asset to the ranch, despite her own tragic past.
This story had me craving more, as secrets unravel, I loved the journey the characters take. The premise is unique for today’s romance. It may not be for everyone, but if you're looking for something unique and different, I highly recommend it.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
This review will be short and sweet bc I don’t want to give anything away but this BOOK!! Unlike anything else I’ve read and I’m not just saying that. The first chapter had me sobbing first of all. CHAPTER ONE 😆 I mean what the heck! Then throughout the book I knew something was off and it had an eerie sense to it. It had me totally hooked! I kept saying “wtf is going on right now” multiple times but in a good way lol
Obviously read the trigger warnings first but then you’ve got to dive into this one! It’s unlike anything @ashleywarren.author has written before and she knocked it out of the park!!
Thank you Ashley for letting WOH be my very first Beta read! And thank you @lunaliterary.management for sending me the ARC to reread 🫶🏽
Whispers of Helena by Ashley Warren 4,5/5⭐ 2,5/5🌶️
I fell in love with Ashley Warren's writing when I picked up The Ladies of Back Bay series last December! It's such an underrated gem, and I wish more people would read it and experience the magic as I did. This latest book solidifies my love for Ashley’s storytelling. It was my first gothic cowboy romance, and I had such a blast reading it! From the first few sentences of the prologue, I was hooked. The writing grabbed my attention right away, and I found myself eager to keep turning the pages. The mystery and suspense had me invested. By the time I finished, I was left speechless, needing a moment to process everything that happened!
The story centers around Silas, a single dad living on a ranch. After his wife passed away, he became closed off and grumpy, focusing solely on his son and the ranch. One day, he hires a new nanny to care for and teach his son. Enter Helena, who has her share of heartache after losing her husband and son. When she arrives at the ranch, she tries to keep her distance from Silas. But soon enough, she starts noticing some strange happenings around the house, like how Silas mysteriously disappears at night and returns with blood on his boots.
I loved how slowly Helena broke down the walls Silas built after his wife’s death. He puts up a good fight against his feelings for her, but it’s no use! Helena’s determination to help Silas heal and rediscover life is truly heartwarming. I won’t spoil any major plot points—trust me, you’ll want to experience this story for yourself! There’s a twist in this book, and while I did see it coming, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment one bit.
Overall, this book was such an amazing read! It beautifully explores themes of grief, revenge, and redemption, but above all, it’s about love. There are some steamy moments, but they fit perfectly with the main plot, which I appreciated. Keep an open mind while you read and enjoy the journey!
I have been anticipating this book since February. And I have to say that the wait was worth it.
This is a gothic cowboy love story that goes beyond unearthly love. Silas is a man stuck in time and limbo with his grief and everyone around him is playing their part to help someone that is so broken nothing seems to help him move on. Helena arrives at his ranch to help care for his son, but also to heal from her own loss. The description of tragedy and grief throughout is raw and haunting but yet described with beautiful imagery. This is also not a typical HEA, but more emphasis on a love story. Which I sometimes prefer as it adds depth and complexity to a novel.
The gothic theme is what I found the most interesting with the paranormal elements, which the author wove in to add the mystery and suspense that kept me intrigued to the very end.
Note: I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the Christian religion themes, as I wasn’t expecting that before I started reading it. But as I read on, it did not deter me at all from enjoying it. The author has provided disclaimer that the book contains Christian themes and other sensitive content and full details can be viewed on her website.
Thank you Ashley and Luna Literary PR for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this gothic love story
This book killed me in so many ways. Grief, love, and loss were so entwined in this novel. I'm so glad I was recommended this story. I mean, when I looked at the summary and saw gothic cowboy romance, I was in. But this story just turned out to be so much more than that. Religious overtones, mysterious atmosphere, and even some really surprising steam were in here, though I'm glad it was a slow burn, as things wouldn't have worked any other way. But when you realize what's really going on? This book has to be one of the most unique I've ever read.
I loved Helena for her strength of will, her faith, and her determination. Silas was a man hardened by the loss of his wife, weighed down by some things he'd done, but he was also an amazing father. Watching these two together and seeing Silas struggle with memories of his dead wife was heartwrenching.
I can't say too much more without giving this plot away, but seriously, the author tied things together in a way I've never seen before. It was paranormal, gothic in the best way, sad, and yet full of some of the strongest love I've ever read about. This book is going to stick with me for a very, very long time.
Honestly just had to sit and stare at a wall after reading this! I didn't really know what to expect going into this book, but I was sucked in right away and could not come up for air. It left me reeling, chapter after chapter.
Whispers of Helena is filled with suspense, secrets and has so many twists your head will be spinning! Silas & Helena are both haunted by their pasts but can't fight the pull they have for each other. Helena sets out to take care of Silas and his son, and Silas fights with everything he has to stay true to his late wife. But, as truths come to light, will they be their saving grace, or take the other down?
This is such a unique story, with such an intricate storyline and side characters that just add so much to the plot. The emotions are heavy, and the twists and turns will have you hooked from start to finish.
WOW. I'm not sure I have words. I went into this book blind and honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into HAHA. But I was pleasantly surprised in the best way. I've never read anything like this and the story/plot was so unique.
I can't say much without spoiling major aspects of the story. But I will say that Ashley's writing was beautifully heartbreaking at times, intriguing throughout and the spice she brought to life was chef's kiss. There's secrets, suspense, gothic romance vibes, and draw dropping WTF moments!! Once i started, I couldn't put it down because I HAD TO KNOW!!!!

This was one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever read. I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I think that made the reading experience so much more enjoyable. The vibes/aesthetic were immaculate! It was haunting, spooky, and unsettling in the most intriguing way.
My heart HURT for Silas. His grief was a living, breathing thing. It was so hard to see how much her was suffering and witnessing the guilt he felt over his growing feelings for Helena. And Helena. I adore her. She’s so incredibly selfless. The way she gave every part of herself to help Silas had me feeling all the feels.
Here’s the thing, there are so many plot twists it’s hard to talk too much about the book because I refuse to spoil this absolute masterpiece for anyone. This isn’t just a love story. It’s a story of what it means to be human. To seek forgiveness and redemption even when it feels far away or like you don’t deserve it.
When I saw this pop up, I ran to it. And yall. This was everything and more. I’ve read cowboy gothic stories before but this is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Truly. Silas and Helena and the world around them is hauntingly beautiful.l 🕊️ Their pull towards each other outweighing their secrets keeping them apart. I was honestly so surprised that this went how it did. The way that both Helena and Silas (and even the side characters) were written is what I loved the most. They had their flaws, they had their own convictions but once they’re thrown all together, they made so much sense as a unit. Ashley did an amazing job at keeping things at bay till you least expect it and the flow of it went amazing.
I knows it’s easy to say but this book hasn’t left my mind since reading it and I’m so happy with the way it ended. I can’t wait to read Marcel’s novella this summer.
Wow, this was great …and so much different than the average romance book. It’s like JT Geissinger and Raya Morris Edwards had a baby…you end up with a dark, paranormal-ish, gothic cowboy story with religious undertones.
First of all, the beginning is so awful and tragic so that kind of sets the stage for the rest of the story. Right away, I got creepy vibes. You can tell something is off …are there spirits wandering this ranch?! What is Silas up to?! You are immediately wondering WTF is going on!
I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m not going to go into much detail except to say that the story had me hooked from beginning to end. It’s a story of heartbreak, loss, revenge, moving on and redemption. It’s a story of soulmates who find their way back to one another. I absolutely cried a few tears and really enjoyed the spiritual aspect of the book. As someone who has wandered away from my religion, it made me feel reconnected spiritually, which I thought was really cool.
The amount of different feelings I had while reading this book is tremendous. From sadness, confusion, then happiness and all back around again. I don’t think I was totally ready for this book and what it brought. The story starts off dark but keep reading everything will eventually come together. I am so happy that I was chosen to read this book. I fell in love with this dark gothic western and I could not put it down!
This was my first experience with a gothic cowboy romance and I loved it! This isn’t your typical romance in that it is heartbreaking but beautiful, had a touch of a supernatural air, and twists and turns. This book had me feelings all the emotions, and even made me cry at parts. I love stories that allow the characters to find healing as you read them. I loved the characters for this book, the main AND side characters, and I am interested to see where the author takes this series.
I’ve never read a gothic cowboy romance and now I want more and more of these. I really enjoyed Silas and Helena. And omg Silas was so stubborn and grumpy. But I loved the hot and cold moments between these two. I never saw any of the plot twists coming. The way these two both were hurting and healed each other. And the spice was damn!
