The Navajo, or Diné (“the people”), are the single largest group of Native American people in North America. Their traditional homeland, the Diné Bikéyah, stretched across the vast landscapes of present-day Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, defined by four sacred mountains that symbolized their spiritual and physical world. Yet their language and culture suggest that the Navajo actually originated in present-day Canada before migrating south toward New Mexico.
While living in the Southwest during the sixteenth century, the Navajo first encountered Europeans and other indigenous people who had contact with white explorers and settlers. This contact seems to have fundamentally and permanently changed the Navajo way of life. They adopted livestock, farming, and the horse. As white settlers pushed relentlessly westward in the nineteenth century, the Navajo faced trials that threatened their very existence. Yet, unlike many other Native American groups, the Navajo endured, adapted, and even thrived. This book explores their history from ancient times until today. This is the story of the Navajo.

I first learned more about the Navajo nation by reading Tony Hillerman's books. Research into the Navajo people for his Leaphorn character led to many fascinating novels. I miss his writing, but his daughter carries on with books also set in the Navajo nation.
I did not find anything in this short book contradicting what I had read in Hillerman's books. I did learn some new information about the windtalkers in WWII. It didn't surprise me to find that the Navajo people are very interested in green energy because they have always felt it was critical to their lives to be in harmony with the environment. They call it "walking in beauty".
I highly recommend this book if you are even remotely interested in learning more about the Navajo nation.
I have read several of these one-hour books. This was the best. I am not Native American but I live in Indian Country. I am familiar with the problems that can arise when white culture and Natve American culture are forced to assimilate. Fortunately other tribes seem to be following in their footsteps and the white man is learning valuable lessons from the Native Americans.
A great introduction to the people who became the Code Talkers
This seems to be a good encapsulation of the history of the Navajo peoples. It describes the people, where the live and how they happened to arrive there. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the Navajo.
The Navajo lived in the four corners area of the United States and the Navajo nation is the largest Indian reservation. The book is very informative and tells us about the history, the hardships and the resilience of the Navajo people.
I liked this book not because it was short in length, but for the information found in it. The Navajo have an interesting past and their future is looking forward. It is nice to learn more about the peoples that make America.
I liked this book because of the historical content of the Navajo Nation. If you are a history buff or interested in Navajo history, you will enjoy reading it.
