If you could save a loved one by making a deal with death itself, would you?

Follow Gabriel as he navigates this life altering decision he made and the inner turmoil as he battles with the guilt.

This book felt more like a dark mystery, or maybe suspense, but not so much a horror. The book description had me expecting a bit more spook to it, so the plot fell a bit flat in that aspect. However it was an interesting storyline… the lengths someone would go in order to save someone they love. I was curious where Gabe would end up, and if his decision was “worth it” in the end.

Do you think it would be worth it? What if it meant losing yourself to save them? The premise definitely had my wheels spinning wondering if I’d go to the lengths Gabriel did watching him struggle as things got worse (and stranger).

I read this book as an ARC thanks to NetGalley. All opinions are my own and given voluntarily.

Well, it is an interesting topic, which has also been used quite a bit. While I was trying not set myself up for any reconceptions, it was difficult not to compare the book to Mort, Scythe Trilogy or The Reaper Chronicles.

Out of all them, this one is probably the darkest and most depressing. Not necessarily in a bad way. It's a dark topic and even though authors often want push for humour way of looking at it, there is also a different side to it. I couldn't say that it was my favourite of the similarly themed reads... it went on a scale of "okay". Not bad, not brilliant either.

The chosen language is easy to read, so unless you're bothered about constant gnawing doubts, self guilt and other morale issues plaguing the main character, you probably will breeze through it.

First off Thank you Netgalley for the arc of this book to read.

To look at the cover of this book I wasn't a 100% sure this would be my thing.  But as I continued to read about gabe his "friends" and the story around his family. And the situation he found himself in I found myself hooked. I'm yet to read a story like this, the concept of death and the grim reaper I found interesting. I wanted to know what would happen to Gabe and Irene (his mum). I would recommend this story to others. Thank you David for writing a genuinely interesting and fascinating read.

A boy who can see the grim reaper.
Now this is something to read.
It's more of a thriller to me.
Will Gabriel choose to save a life.
The grim is a part of Gabriel's life and when tragedy hits, the grim offers him a chance to save them.
Practically a deal with death. I would definitely be on board with this.
The first time he takes a life is the hardest.
It took a while to get into the book but once there it was awesome.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
I was extremely excited to start this novel based on a young boy, turned teen and a horrific deal he makes with the grim reaper.
The story had promise but for me went down hill about half way.
The character building was good as I felt for characters and the life situations they were in.
For me this book was very sad and depressing.
I’m not sure to what audience I would recommend this novel …

"Grim" by David Cinnella delves into supernatural suspense with a grim bargain at its core. The premise is intriguing, blending both horror and philosophy. The book highlights the lengths someone will take to protect the ones they love, even if it means hurting others along the way. Although I enjoyed the philosophical undertones of the book, at times the pacing did feel a little slow. Overall, Grim is a thought-provoking supernatural tale that raises compelling questions about loss and sacrifice.

It’s the last Wednesday of February! You know what that means… book review time! This month, I decided to try a little horror (not that I needed it with the state of everything, but yeah). Grim by David Cinnella is being released via The Book Whisperer today (the 26th). As usual, I must thank them and NetGalley for giving me access to an ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Let’s get to it.

Grim follows Gabe Matthews from childhood into those angsty teenage years. As a young boy, he loses his father, but discovers a secret silent friend dressed in black robes and carrying a scythe. The problem is that no one else can see this being. At 17, his mother is diagnosed with cancer. In a desperate attempt to save her, Gabe makes a deal with his friend. But can Gabe pull off his end of the bargain and save both his mother and himself?

The plot. It’s a pretty standard “deal with Death” scenario. Gabe’s a momma’s boy and doesn’t have the coping skills to deal with her potential death. He’s a bullied outcast in a small town. So, he talks to his Grim Reaper friend and ends up making a deal that doesn’t go as planned. There’s nothing new or surprising about it. Some of it doesn’t really make sense. Gabe’s leap to “I must murder people” instead of “I have to temporarily take over this dude’s job” when he sees the contract is weird, but I put it off to the whole being a teenager thing. The contract itself is pretty straightforward, so the ending felt like a giant leap. I mean… you wrote the contract. You can’t just randomly add something to it in order to create a plot twist. It feels like author interference rather than a natural progression of the story and that’s not good. It knocked the plot from a solid standard but not bad, down to mediocre.

The characters were mostly fine. I didn’t really connect to Gabe because he was pretty stupid for a supposedly smart kid. I had no idea where his anger at his stepdad came from. Basically, there were far too many things that I had to attribute to his being a teenager rather than being shown why he was the way he was. It was all very surface level. His stepdad was awkward but nice enough. Mom was the perfectly imperfect mother in the hopes that the reader would empathize with Gabe’s plight. Everyone played the role they were made for without much work to flesh them out. They were solidly standard which isn’t bad, it’s just not memorable. And that’s fine.

I’m going to be honest. I finished this book about a week ago and I don’t remember much about it. I remember the parts that didn’t quite make sense and the general story, but nothing really sticks out. Which means I didn’t dislike it, but I didn’t particularly like it either. Nothing about the writing sticks out. I’ll forget it entirely in a few days. A lot of books are like that.

Ultimately, Grim is a thing that exists. It’s neither good nor bad enough to hate. It just is. I’m not going to go looking for more books by Cinnella, but I won’t actively avoid his stuff.

Overall, I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Actually, 2 and a half. I don’t think you’re missing anything if you skip it, but it’s not something I’ll tell you not to read. Unless you take issue with the whole “killing off/harming a woman simply to motivate the hero/villain” trope. Then you should probably steer clear of this one.

Grim
by David Cinnella
Release date: February 26th

Gabriel Matthews has lived his life with a curse draped over his shoulders like a shadow—an unshakable, bone-deep awareness of death. He sees it in the form of the Grim Reaper, a silent, ever-present specter that materializes when the end is near. It doesn’t speak. It doesn’t warn. It only waits. Watching.

From the very first page, Grim plunges you into a world where death is not a distant inevitability but an ever-persistent force breathing down your neck. The air crackles with tension, thick with the kind of dread that makes your skin crawl. Gabriel’s gift—or perhaps his curse—isn’t just unsettling; it’s suffocating. Imagine walking through life knowing that at any moment, a faceless entity could appear, whispering the unspoken promise of mortality.

And then, the unthinkable happens.

When tragedy strikes, the Reaper finally steps forward, breaking its eternal silence with an offer as chilling as the grave itself. What would you do if death gave you a choice? One that could rewrite fate—but at a price that gnaws at your very soul? Gabriel is thrust into a harrowing game, a relentless descent into darkness where every decision drags him closer to something far worse than death. Right and wrong blur together, morality twisting in the shadows of an unimaginable nightmare.

David Cinnella crafts a world so atmospheric it seeps into your bones. The writing pulses with eerie beauty, every page laced with the kind of tension that keeps you holding your breath. The Reaper isn’t just a looming figure; it’s a presence, a force you can feel creeping through the cracks of the story, lingering just beyond the veil. And as Gabriel is pulled deeper into its sinister grasp, you can’t help but wonder: how much of yourself would you sacrifice to escape the inevitable?

Dark, haunting, and utterly unshakable, Grim is the kind of horror that doesn’t just scare you—it lingers, curling around your thoughts long after you turn the last page. If you love stories that toe the line between psychological terror and supernatural horror, this book is an absolute must-read.

Thank you to Book Whisperer for this advance copy via NetGalley for an honest, voluntary review.

Grim by David Cinnella, At seven Gabriel lost his father, but it was also the first time he saw the dark shadow. The next time he sees it it was while at his mother‘s work and he asked “who he was?” Gabriel is a lonely little boy who is bullied at school and so looks to the Grim Reaper as someone to talk to despite Grim, cannot talk back. years later, Gabriel is in high school and still being bullied by the same bully. His mom is remarried to ROBERT and he is doing his best to get on with life. One day after school, his mom tells him devastating news which sends Gabriel reeling and desperate to change it. this is when he calls on Grim and makes a deal that will change his life in increasingly devastating ways. This was a really really good book. I absolutely enjoyed it. I do wish Grim could’ve talked but I totally understand why he didn’t. I do want to say they have a part in the book where it says Father Joseph had a look on his face as if he realized everything he ever believed in wasn’t true, but I didn’t get that because for one thing he was a Catholic priest, they believe in purgatory and the afterlife, and everything that happened to him only prove what he believe. I mean, not everybody’s met with angels and trumpets… Or at least I don’t think they are. either way this is an awesome book although I wouldn’t put it under horror. It still was an awesome awesome read! this is a book. I definitely recommend. #NetGalley, #TheBookWhisperer, #TheBlindReviewer, #DavidCinnella, #Grim,

Wow I really enjoyed this book! It was a thriller book that gradually got darker. It was a roller coaster of a ride. Starting as an 8yr to an 18yr Gabriel goes thru hell in more ways than 1. First losing his father at a young age, trouble in school, a bully, then his mother’s illness, and the decision that changed everyone’s lives.

The emotional rollercoaster the author put me on was no less than exhilarating! There were times I had tears in my eyes and others I laughed then a few gasps and audible “OH MY GOD!” “NO WAY” “WHAT?!”

If you’re looking for a book to get you out of a slump or are dipping your toe into the genres of thriller/horror this is a great book to start with. I myself love all things horror/thriller and I was still totally entranced with this book. The world thru Gabriel’s eyes/mind really hit close to the heart.

I truly felt his fear, hopelessness, depression, defeat, love for his mother, guilt for his actions, anger, regret. I loved the writing, the story/plot was very entertaining! I will definitely keep an eye out for future work of this author.

This is a macabre and sad story reflecting on human loneliness and grief, a slow-burn suspense with a gradual descendence into darkness.

Ever since his father's death at a young age, Gabriel can see the Grim Reaper. Gabe is bullied often and finds solace in drawing, as a lonely teen he befriends the Grim and calls on him to blow off steam. After some devastating news, the Grim offers him a deal, one hundred souls in return for a life extension. Gabe grapples with the morality of the decision, but eventually desperation wins, and he tries to figure out how best to meet his end of the bargain. Along the way he begins to lose himself, but gains some extraordinary abilities.

This was an interesting take on Reaper lore, and raises questions on how far people would be willing to go to save their loved ones. Although not massively descriptive or gory, the writing focuses more on the emotions and gradual changes that occur as a consequence of the Reaper's deal.

With thanks to Netgalley, Book Whisperer, and the author for access to this eARC.

Grim by David Cinella
3.5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

Gabe sees a black hooded figure constantly lingering around him after his father's death. He's the only one who can see it. He is bullied a lot in school so he befriends the figure, or the Grim Repear himself. Now Gabriel is all grown up but the repear still as his friend. Until one day he receives a devastating news. Then me makes a deal, with the death itself to undo the happenings. But what would this deal cost him???
For the plot, it wasn't exactly horror like, but it did question a lot of moral values of the characters. How far can one go to save the person they love. It was really interesting to read how Gabe's choice affected him and what happened of him. A 4 for the plot.
For the characters, I love Gabe's development. As the story progresses we see how he loses all his human morals to reach his one goal.

Overall it was a good read with excellent pacing, story development and the overall theme and idea, putting yourself into Gabe's shoes gets you thinking.
Thanks yo Netgalley for the ARC!

Because children can see otherworldly creatures due to their innocence, Gabriel found it easy to see the shadow that hung around when someone passed away. He was too young to understand what he was seeing and the entity could not speak. Gabriel eventually realizes he is communicating with the Grim reaper. I had some very mixed feelings while reading this book. I guess I had questions as to why Gabriel could see the Grim reaper but not anyone else. He almost seemed to like being friends with Grim. Once his mom became sick, the reality of what Grim did was weighing on his mind. The contract, once laid out, should not have been offered to a child. Manipulative behavior was constructed as a way to help instead of being what it was…a trap. Unfortunately for Gabriel he did not know the full scope of what he was about to do and the consequences of his choice. This book was very dark and bleak.

Gabriel Matthews has always been able to see the Grim Reaper when death is near. Silent and imposing, the Reaper has lingered as a terrifying yet fascinating figure in the teen’s life.
Until now.
When unexpected tragic news arrives, the Reaper offers Gabriel a terrible choice, one that demands everything he has to give, and that will thrust him into a nightmare far worse than he ever imagined.

An Interesting if predictable take on the Grim reaper. I did enjoy even though I kept finding myself losing interest now and then as the story slowed.
It wasn't the best horror story I have yet read this year but it is worth giving a chance if you don't like your horror too gory or bloody.

Recommended for young adult audiences or those new to the genre. Published date FEB. 26, 2025

ARC Review ✨️

♡Gabriel & the Reaper♡

Grim is a fascinating dark tale. The author was not wrong when they said the writing would haunt you! I completely love that!! I'm a horror fanatic, so the darker the better! 😈🖤

Gabriel can see the Reaper whenever death is near. He's always kept to himself until one day he gives Gabriel a choice. The cost is ultimately his humanity. Gabriel quickly finds out that death isn't the scariest part, but instead, it's only the beginning of where horror truly lurks.

The writing and the character building were written flawlessly. The whole concept around this book was highly intriguing. The suspense that kicked in when you know there's about to be a major plot twist was perfectly executed. I highly recommend this story to any fans of the horror world!

Thanks so much to the author, Book Whisperer, and Netgalley for the ARC!

thank you netgallery for the arc.
it was a good story and i managed to read it in only a day just because it did keep me absorbed in it. definitely didn’t feel like a horror novel and read WAY too fast paced for me. I felt the author could have focussed more on the moral dilemma more and stretched out the first 20 ish kills rather than the first 10 ish. i also wish he would have focussed less on the dialogue and more on gabriel’s internal feelings and maybe have more suspicions against him in order to increase the stakes and gabriel’s paranoia. it felt rushed but it was a good and simple read. i would have given less but i was absorbed in it all day so i can’t say it was bad, just could improve a lot more.

Thank you netgalley for providing this arc.. sorry im reviewing a bit later than anticipated .. life does that sometimes.

It was a very interesting series of events. Some things i guessed but the ending, as per usual cuz i cant predict everything, was kinda unexpected but i loved it. It reminded me of death note and when a monster calls when i started reading it .. i love both so i continued reading with ease. The clues and nuggets dropped in sugarcoated the unexpected ending. I was still shocked but not really surprised either. It felt good to have a well rounded ending. I like those. Feels like huge full-stop yk?

Recommend!! Hoping everyone that reads this enjoys it like i did, if not more.

Suppose you could save the life of someone you love by committing unspeakable acts. This is the dilemma faced by Gabriel Matthews when his mother is diagnosed with cancer. Having already lost his father to the disease, Gabriel is faced with making a decision between becoming a murderous monster or losing his mother.
As the story progresses, Gabriel fights his conscience and his sense of right and wrong. The choice becomes more difficult as his mother’s disease progresses.
This is a good horror story but also addresses man’s inner conflicts and the endless struggle to do the right thing even if the cost is high.

This book was provided free with a gentle request for a review.

Excellent read, great storyline, and seamless world building. Main character quickly developed from inconsequential to pivotal. Never truly acquired a thirst for stand alones but this novel held my attention from early on. Won’t give too much info, but, the premise of the grim reaper while not novel, still kept the story line riveting with the subtle nudge into the macabre. Attempting to follow the illogical antics of Gabriel will prove rivetingly enjoyable.

The main character, Gabriel, finds himself making a deal with the Grim Reaper. This book leaves you asking how much is too much for a loved one's health. I really enjoyed this book. I found myself needing to take breaks from it, as some parts were intense. I could see this being a movie. I could feel the sceneries, the tension, the fear, etc. At the end, I found that I couldn't feel bad for the main character, Gabriel, and wondering what I would do in the same situation.

Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this story. I read this story in exchange for an unbiased review, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Publication date: 02/26/25.
Ever since he was a child, Gabriel Matthews, has been able to see the Grim Reaper when death was near. While this may frighten most of us, the Reaper himself becomes almost a comfort to Gabriel as he grows into a teenager. The one lesson in life Gabriel has learned the hard way is that death doesn't discriminate and when it's your time, it's your time. Or so he thought. When Gabriel receives some tragic news, his old friend the Reaper is there to make Gabriel a deal that that has him wondering how far he's willing to go to change fate . Would you make a deal with death if it meant saving someone you loved?
This was a fantastic view into the exploration of morality and just how far people are willing to go for those they love. The way this author portrays Gabriel as a young, agile teenager at the beginning of this book while we slowly watch him deteriorate and get sicker the longer this guilt and shame weighs on him throughout the book is genius. Gabriel's character is written very well in the way that a teenager doesn't stop to think about consequences until they are staring him in the face. I do wish we had more of a horror aspect involved in this story, rather than the suspense that truly carried this story. There wasn't much real horror, except for the murders that were rushed through in my opinion. I was more on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Gabriel could fulfill his contract before the Reaper's deadline was up. I was really hoping for maybe death himself to be more scary, or if maybe some of the souls Gabriel reaped had come back to haunt him it might have been a little spookier. The way the author portrayed death was interesting and I enjoyed the black door scenes where the souls went instead of the author attempting to write a heaven and hell storyline. The ending was a bit predictable but I did highly enjoy it, especially the totality of Irene and Gabriel's storyline. 4/5 stars because while I did enjoy the characters and the story itself I just wish it would have been a little creepier.

Grim by David Cinella is a thriller/fiction/supernatural novel focused on Gabriel Matthews, a teen whose best friend is the Reaper. When his mother is diagnosed with cancer, Gabriel makes a reckless deal with the Reaper in order to save her - but the consequences of the deal are more than he ever anticipated.
I greatly appreciated the characterisation of Gabriel, a teenager who always tries to escape the rules and rebel, but eventually becomes inescapably snared by them.
Grim holds a sombre message that sometimes we have to simply accept that things are not in our control, and that we should not try to change the unchangeable. Additionally, it presents a heartful representation of how grief can ultimately lead to complete self destruction and the destruction of others around oneself.
This novel kept me on edge, and I had a seriously difficult time putting it down. From the ‘adventures’ Gabriel embarks on, to the internal conflict he faces, to the characterisation of the Reaper itself - I was hooked. Cinella has a masterful way of painting images in the mind of the reader; I was able to fully visualise everything. The gloomy atmosphere of Grim was also done exceptionally well. Especially nearing the end, I truly felt as suffocated, cornered, and desperate as Gabriel. This story is a tragedy, and the ending hurt me so badly, but it was well executed.
While I was reading, I was listening to a sad playlist (to fit the vibe lol) and two songs that stuck out to me as fitting the atmosphere perfectly were “hotline (edit)” by Billie Eilish, and “Sour Switchblade” by Elita. In my opinion, they have that same mournful, yet vaguely hopeful feel that Grim does.
Nearing the end, while I did anticipate the biggest plot twist, there were several smaller ones that caught me off guard and made me gasp in surprise! Truly, nothing is as it seems….
And after completing this novel, I would rate it a solid 4/5 stars, and I encourage anyone who likes thrillers and supernatural stories to give it a read.

Real Rating: 3.5* of five

The Publisher Says: Gabriel Matthews has always been able to see the Grim Reaper when death is near.

The cost? His humanity.

As Gabriel spirals deeper into the Reaper’s dark game, the lines between right and wrong blur, and every decision he makes brings him closer to the point of no return. Death, it seems, isn’t just the end. It’s where the true horror begins.

Grim is a chilling tale of sacrifice, morality, and the devastating cost of love. Perfect for fans of Scythe and Death Note, this gripping horror fantasy will haunt you long after the final page.

I RECEIVED A DRC FROM THE PUBLISHER VIA NETGALLEY. THANK YOU.

My Review
: A very interesting, well-told thought experiment for anyone who ever wanted with every atom of their being to have someone back. It goes down better as a teen, but I suspect each of us could easily conjure someone we'd take Death's deal to keep.

The horror elements here are of the unscary-to-me supernatural kind. The ethical and moral questions posed are far more interesting than any frisson a horror fan might be missing. The author's prose is more than up to the job he needs it to do. I'm not eager for more because it's a change rung on the theme; but a decent one.

The Kindle edition's out Tuesday the 26th; it's $5.99.

A teenaged boy makes a terrible bargain with the Grim Reaper in what may be the darkest, saddest, cruelist book I have read in years.

Gabriel is a sweet young boy when his father dies of cancer. He inexplicably develops the ability to see Death and watch other people pass over to the (undefined) next world. Years later, when his beloved mother falls ill from the same disease, he makes a deal to save her, and it destroys his own life.

I don't understand why this book was written and I can't imagine an appropriate audience for it.
Terrible things happen to good and bad people but there is no redemptive value to any of it. It is all just sad and ugly and random. Gabriel is a talented artist whose life consists of loss. He is bullied at school and appears to have no friends or hobbies besides drawing horror comics. His mother, Irene, is a loving wife and mother as well as a dedicated nurse, but she also seems to have very little luck. His stepfather, Robert is a good man, who makes one senselessly bad decision.

While not badly written, Grim is histrionic in the style of too many overwraught YA novels, yet I would NEVER encourage any adolescent to read something so nihilistic. I truly wish I had never read it as the story will haunt me but not in the good way of something by Stephen King or Shirley Jackson. Grim has left me feeling depressed and I would worry about any impressionable reader who might be pushed over the edge into despair.

I wish to thank NetGalley and the publisher for givng me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
