I have never wanted to shove a metal straw into an author’s head and suck out the next book in one gloriously messy and delicious moment until I finished Michaelbrent Colling’s fifth zombie instalment The Colony: Shift.

I’m only reviewing Shift now, months after reading it because a. I was so incensed every time I thought of having to wait for the next instalment that a metal straw seemed a perfectly sensible solution and I needed to stop gnashing my teeth before I hurt/ate someone, b. I know enough about brains to know my cranial cuisine idea would not actually work so I’d have to wait for c. the next instalment actually being released (which has now happened).

So, my review is simple: BUY THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY. Especially if you are a fan of books 1-4, and if you haven’t read them yet, go, buy, become a book derived adrenalin junkie, and spend days cursing Collings as you squeeze in zombies at every opportunity, and have difficulty sleeping as an added bonus.

Shift continues the zombie chased struggles of Ken, the people he has fought alongside and for, and all at about a kazillion miles an hour. Shift isn’t literary finesse or heft, but it’s damn fine fun, adventure, and generates an impressive number of “WHAT THE HELL!!?? NO! Wha - … Wait…. GAAAAAH!!!!” from the reader.

Recommended for: readers who like their stories to hurtle off the page, with incredible, creepy and adaptive zombies in close pursuit.
Not recommended for: anyone with cautious dispositions, sensitive stomachs, heart conditions or lovers of iambic pentameter.

Ok, so I know I’m late to the party on reading this series, but Michaelbrent Collings you’re killing me here! I swore off of reading series books years ago when Stephen King started the Gunslinger books and took sooo long between them that I quit! (And yes it’s true Gunslinger fans, I never went back) But since this is a complete series I gave it a go. Now I’ve tried after the last couple of books to take a break and read something else, but the dang cliffhangers have sucked me straight into the next one every time! I’m enjoying this series and truly flying through it. If you’re looking for a different kind of zombie series go for it! You won’t be sorry.

The story progresses and continues to progress in an engaging manner. I think the ending of this book was awesome. I like the way the character is engulfed in pits of despair and sidesteps his calamities rather than resolve them like some books of this genre.

Amazing

I'm not big on series books but this one is an exception !!!
I read books 2 through 6 in 2 days, reading late through the night. Great story and characters.
Not your usual zombie story Many, with many suprising twist and turns.
A must read!!

I didn't even want to finish this. It got all weird. This series just devolved into feeling like mixed genres too much for me.

While the book is still interesting this book I found myself in several places saying okay maybe he should have stopped at the last book because this one seems like it has even more fillers in it and that it's interesting because it still has the action part of it but it has a lot of moments where he's just like all in a daze or he's going off on a tangent in his head about one thing or another swim teachers and past life experiences and he just be like off in lala land somewhere he also often goes loopy and just spazzes out or whatever. so sometimes you want to hit him upside the back of his head and say dude wake up.. but is not enough for me to give it 3 stars anything lower than 4 stars because it is still really interesting in it kept me reading. I want to go to the next book to find out what happens but I'm sorta scared of the extra babbling that he and has going on in his head so maybe I'll take a break

I can't get enough of Michaelbrent Collings' zombie books! Not only do they make the time fly on the elliptical, I actually look forward to working out. If only his books were longer...I would be a size two by now. Fun, fast paced. If you are an aficionado of the zombie genre, you'll love this series. If you haven't yet developed a taste for zombie literature, The Colony is a great place to become "infected" with a passion for zombies.

Extremely exciting

But I'm not sure if I want to read the next episode. After 5 volumes, I still don't have a clue as to what is going on, what started it all, and not even a hint of an end in sight. A person can only be teased for so long.
