Up North looks to the landscape north of the Thruway, reflecting via newspaper columnist Dick Case's pieces about Norther New York, including The Old Whittler, Granpa Moses, Wolfe Island, The Grandmother Tree, the Lake Ontario dunes, a remote Adirondack cabin and more.
I had the pleasure of going to Dick Case's estate sale in September '24. Thanks to the promotion of the great @SyracuseHistory Instagram account, it drew me and several hundred other interested customers. For good reason. Dick and his wife had exceptional taste — their house was truly lived in. An exceptional storyteller, Dick's home even had a whole anthology worth of tales to tell. I'm glad it was pillaged by so many people with good intentions.
I got there later in the day than I probably should have, considering I was "competing" against mostly older folks who absolutely LIVE for events like this. I grabbed a few cools mugs, a USPS collection box piggy bank, and the highlight: a framed George Vander Sluis lithograph of one of his signature barn doors. (It was dedicated, "For Dick.") The piece caught my eye while I was moving to the second floor. I had never heard of Vander Sluis before, but I Googled his name. A Wikipedia page came up. The painting was coming home with me. The first piece of art I've ever bought!
The ladies at the checkout area in the driveway threw in this anthology for everyone, which was a fun bonus. I took a little longer than I should have to get around a book of this length, but I'm glad I eventually did. Syracuse and the Adirondacks will always mean so much to me, and Case really renders a lovely Bob Ross of the North Country. Though, I would've loved more on the 46ers. I particularly liked the column about the rural gas station owner/operators who are twins.
The author was a columnist for the Syracuse Post Standard. There are 20 columns (short stories) about the Adirondack Region on New York State, some with connections to Syracuse, NY.
