Henry carved a comfortable life for himself through literal blood and sweat. It’s not in him to be soft. For the first time, that might be the only thing that saves him.

As the right hand of a crime boss, Henry has lived a violent life. He’s as hardened on the inside as he is on the outside. But lately, everything is changing. The man he secretly loved married someone else. This cocky new guy who’s barely an adult is driving him up the wall. He just wants back the normalcy. So why can’t he stop watching everything Field does?

Field is a mess. He was raised to be a killer, and that’s all he knows. As much as he wants to be different, life won’t let him and he’s not sure he has a choice anyhow. There’s no real comfort for him. He’s just trying to hang on until he can’t any longer. Henry is in the way of all of that. Field isn’t sure he wants it to stop. Unfortunately, his crazed episodes and even more insane family might just be too much for Henry to stick through.

Deranged is the third book in Charity Parkerson’s Killers Inc. series where hired assassins and their ilk find the love that finally saves them. These are best enjoyed when read in order.

This felt like a halfway in the series book. Not overly dramatic but yet, dealing with important main characters. The falling felt a little abrupt, the leap from hook-ups to in-love a little stretched. To be fair, seeing Field's golden heart even through his terrible fits would be just the thing to melt a rough guy like Henry. They were adorable together and I ended up wishing them all the best because they deserved it.

Short read

I always feel like I'm missing part of the story with this series. I know, why am I still reading them? Because I want to see them all get happiness.

This is a story about Henry, a hardened, violent crime boss's right-hand man, and Field, a chaotic young man raised to be a killer, whose lives collide in unexpected ways. Henry is a man who built his life through violence and struggle. Lately, his life has been disrupted by personal heartbreak and the irritating presence of the "cocky new guy," Field. Despite wanting a return to normalcy, Henry finds he can't stop watching Field. Field is an emotionally unstable "mess" who struggles to survive his violent reality and his own "crazed episodes." He is trying to hang on, but Henry unexpectedly gets in the way. Both men realize that a connection is forming between them, but they fear Field's severe mental state and "insane family" might be too much for the perpetually hardened Henry to handle.

I loved this story with the two men who were drawn together even though Henry was a hardened criminal and Field was damaged and subject to episodes. Henry was the perfect man to calm Field down and stop him from causing harm. There were plenty of reactions, some emotions and feelings from both men and the wider community around them. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

‘You look like a man who doesn’t want company’ – Romance in a danger field

Expanding her dramatic Killers Inc series – DANCER, EDGE, now DERANGED – a series Charity Parkerson describes as being about trained assassins: ‘Assassins aren’t born. They’re forged. So, this series deals with several elements that shape hired killers.’ She continues to create characters who eventually bond…with heat! This time ‘round, the principal men are Henry and Field, both immersed in the field of crime, yet both with needs that each other fill. The sensitivity with which Charity paints her characters is evident as the story opens: ‘It was hard as hell feeling like a stranger in his home. Everything felt upended since the Agafonov crew had burst into their lives. Henry relaxed in a lounge chair by the pool, trying to enjoy the way the multi-colored strung lanterns cast a glow on the water.’ From that intro on is a dark but entertaining ride ‘where hired assassins and their ilk find the love that finally saves them’ – another Charity Parkerson winner!

Too many scars

Field is the guy with golden retriever energy and too many scars to hide. His episodes are difficult to contain and he hates it.
But thankfully Henry is around to help
Another great installment.

This story was darker, heavier than the previous books, although there was still enough ridiculousness to lighten the load. My heart broke for Field and I'm so glad Henry finally got through to him.

This book is one of the books I enjoy. I’m just hard to please; not that the book was bad. 2.5 is halfway mark
