"It was when I saw her smile, or maybe when I heard her laugh. That's when it hit me, this strange warmth, this unfamiliar lightness. It felt like something had shifted inside me, and it was unsettling at first, like a system glitch I couldn't debug. But the feeling didn't go away. It stayed, and it confused me. I'd never known what happiness was supposed to feel like. Now, it was as though it had taken root in me, growing out of nowhere, uninvited.
And yet, for all the confusion, I never wanted it to stop."
A yearning man is great, but a yearning reaper.... meet Malek:
"Her voice had a siren's beauty, smooth and enticing, tugging at the edges of my consciousness in a way that made me question everything. It was as if she knew the power her words wielded, wielding them like a weapon - a sweet poison that wrapped around my mind, whispering promises of pleasure and temptation."
Malek is not your typical reaper. With his over-the-top sass and superiority complex, I absolutely adored his character. Possessive in the best way possible. His slight moments of shyness rivaled his possessiveness and had me giggling all the way through. Although the angle of death and souls, Malek was the guiding light Selin needed at the end of her journey. Malek once said, "She's the spark that ignites my very being, the one thing I'd burn the world for." And as those words left his mouth, my soul left my body along with them. And as much as I loved him, I resented him for everything he put Selin through in those last few pages. Even though I want to forgive him more than anything, I can't.
"You belong to me, Selin, and I always get what's mine."
Turning the cards over to Selin: she's as realistic yet resilient as they come. Her relationship with Malek came at the perfect time. It allowed her to explore this wild side she had hidden. And even though they didn't know each other for long, when she was almost one with death and remembering those "seven precious memories", Malek occupied half of them. Selin is such a strong and powerful character to have gone through all she had and still maintain herself in the face of even the god of wisdom. She is the epitome of survival and resilience, a symbol of strength and femininity, and the embodiment of the true Medusa - not the lies told of her nor her tarnished image.
"If a battle of pride was the price of keeping Selin close, I'd pay it. If she refused to bend? I'd keep her anyway, consequences be dammed."
Although she played a minute role, Sarah was one of my favorite characters throughout the whole book. Her support for Selin and encouragement to go on with her life after Alex was everything. She's the definition of a girl's girl and a true sister to Selin. One could only wish for a Sarah in their life.
"Acceptance wouldn't mean surrender; it meant embracing the inevitable while still living fully."
At last, to hell with love and all the gods; fuck Athena. This was a masterpiece and a true work of art. To me, it wasn't just a quick read nor a short one. It wasn't a story. It was a journey that deserved time and attention. I wish it could've been longer to really get to see the relationship develop over time and progress, yet a part of me is standing smiling at the finish line - proud of the cycle that has reached its end. Iconic ending filled with sorrow and tears.
