The Hostess Secret: A Novel

Rate this book
Always in the same bed.

Cam—not Cameron or Camden, but Camilo—is waiting at the airport for his flight to Chicago to meet his daddy—my apologies, his boyfriend, Nico, whom he has not seen in a while. Although Nico does not like it when he calls him that, Cam wonders if he has changed.

Once they are together, they arrive at 6932 Melodale Lane, where, rooted under the dim illumination of the porch light, Cam stands before this unsettling figure with a ghastly appearance. He realizes with a chilling certainty that the ashy, frizzy hair figure is Janice, their hostess.

However, some weird things happened during their stay.

But, everything is all good?

Or is it?

A love story filled with suspense and intrigue

I read this novel in less than a day. That’s how gripping it was.

This is not the usual love story that you find in romance books. Cam and Nico have been together for some time and reunite after having to live away from one another because of life circumstances. Their connection and what they go through has a clear touch of reality for couples that have been together for some time.

The story also touches the topic of what LGBTQ+ relationships go through in terms of feeling the freedom to show their love to others.

As you embark on this journey with Cam and Nico, we dive into an intriguing plot that had me on the edge of my seat. They find themselves in a strange house with people that seem to be off somehow. This takes them through a lot of situations that are nerve-racking and filled with suspense.

As the story developed, I was completely engulfed in what they were going through, not only with their hostess, but with each other. I found myself walking in their steps and living their story minute by minute.

It’s a story about love, connections, and the reality that in life, you never know what will come next.

Unfortunately I had to DNF around page 146. The story feels aimless, like I’ve been reading and going nowhere for the past couple of chapters. Doesn’t have a clear plot, story doesn’t go along with the title or synopsis. Events are meaningless to the plot, inconsistent or doesn’t deliver any real impact or development. Characters’ personalities(all of them), the storyline, syntaxis are completely inconsistent, feels like there is no clear idea how to portray the characters’ personas and feelings, and they act one way in a page, and completely opposite on the other. Found a couple of hiccups in logistics (introducing the same character twice, characters being in two places at once, few grammatical errors, characters acting completely different at how they’re being described or presented) it just made it impossible to follow along :(

I never thought I would read a story of diasporic Puerto Ricans, let alone gay ones. I think the novel should have had another title but I have to thank the author for not focusing on a stereotypical love story or gay characters because these characters have so much depth for their young age and even though my favorite character was Ethan, which might be controversial, I enjoyed the two protagonists. The themes of this novel spoke volumes and I just have one question: Did Ethan die?
