Technique and Control: Jacques Ellul's Sociology

Rate this book
Collects sociologist Jacques Ellul’s insights on technology and social manipulation.

Jacques Ellul was a prolific writer and brilliant sociologist whose work on technological society and propaganda remains relevant today, despite coming from a distinctly French, postwar perspective. Technique and Control re-introduces Ellul’s main body of work to social scientists and readers curious about technology and social life. Frank W. Elwell has updated and supplemented Ellul’s examples of lifeworld domination through physical technology, organization, and an underlying mindset of technique that prioritizes efficient goal-oriented behaviors guided by experience, empiricism, calculability, predictability, and logic. Particular attention is given to the development of human techniques of control such as education, propaganda, and other modes of socialization. By re-invigorating these writings for contemporary readers, Elwell illuminates an important body of sociological work for a new generation of social scientists, students, and those interested in modern society and its continuing evolution.

Frank W. Elwell has done the field of sociology a tremendous service. Translating Jacques Ellul’s dense, prophetic, and often overwhelming critiques of modern society into a framework that speaks directly to the 21st century is no small feat. Elwell not only captures the spirit of Ellul's original thesis but masterfully updates the empirical examples to reflect the digital age, the gig economy, and modern propaganda. This is not just a summary of Ellul; it is a vital reinvigoration. It takes a towering figure of 20th-century thought and makes him essential reading for anyone trying to understand the quiet authoritarianism of our algorithms and bureaucracies today. A brilliant piece of synthesis."

Reading Technique and Control feels like finally finding the missing manual for the modern world. Elwell brilliantly dismantles the myth that technology is neutral, revealing technique as a mindset that is quietly eroding our autonomy and social bonds. What makes this book exceptional is how Elwell connects the dots between physical technology, organizational efficiency, and the 'human techniques' of education and propaganda. He writes with clarity about terrifying concepts, making this complex sociological theory accessible without diluting its power. This book is a wake-up call, and Elwell is the one sounding the alarm with precision and grace.

Too often, sociological theory is sacrificed on the altar of academic jargon. Elwell avoids this trap completely. His writing is crisp, authoritative, and remarkably fluid. He takes Ellul’s distinctly French, postwar perspective and translates it into a sociological lens that feels urgent and immediate. I particularly appreciated how Elwell highlights the underlying mindset of technique, the prioritization of logic and calculation over human value, and illustrates it with current, relatable examples. This book is a masterclass in how to update a classic theory while remaining true to its core arguments. It is engaging, thought-provoking, and deeply satisfying to read.

As an educator (or someone passionate about the evolution of society), I am always looking for texts that bridge the gap between historical theory and contemporary life. Technique and Control is a gift to the classroom. Elwell has taken the intimidating work of a giant and turned it into a coherent, logical, and powerfully relevant text. He gives particular attention to the 'human techniques of control,' how we are socialized and shaped, which is a critical nuance often missed in discussions about technology. Elwell doesn't just write for scholars; he writes for the curious mind. This is the book I will be recommending to colleagues and students for years to come.

In an era dominated by data extraction, AI, and disinformation, we are desperate for a vocabulary to describe our unease. Frank W. Elwell provides that vocabulary. By re-introducing Ellul’s sociology, Elwell has given us a map of the labyrinth we are currently navigating. He handles the subject matter with profound respect and a sobering clarity. I am grateful for this work; it is a critical lens through which to view the 'lifeworld domination' we face daily. Elwell’s passion for the subject shines through on every page, and his dedication to making this body of work accessible to a new generation is commendable. It feels like he is handing us a weapon of mass awareness.
