A series of heartbreaking setbacks behind her, Scarlett Sykes is now focused on creating the best life possible for her daughter. One where innocence and joy is not colored by rejection or loss. While finances are tight and Scarlett’s job isn’t ideal for a single mother, her child will always know she’s loved. Especially since Harmony’s father wanted nothing to do with them.
As lead singer and the face of a successful country band, Jake Turnquist’s closest friends depend on him, but life in the spotlight is quickly losing its appeal. At a party celebrating another accomplishment, he’s stunned to discover Scarlett assisting the caterer. Almost ten years have passed, but he’s never forgotten his first love.
In the hours after a surprise revelation, Jake scrambles to orchestrate a way to spend time with Scarlett and Harmony—the family he’s always wanted but never knew he had. He once gave her up to pursue his music. What will he have to surrender to win her back?
Top notch romance, full of sweet parent-child moments, too! Midnight Blue is a breath of fresh air after reading some darker stories. It reminds me what happily ever afters are meant to be! -Janine Rosche, author of The Road Before Us and With Every Memory
After Suzie Waltner graduated from the University of Idaho, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee. After sixteen years, she now claims Nashville as her home. She loves all things Jane Austen, reading, watching movies, and cheering for the Nashville Predators hockey team. While she hasn’t found her true love, she hasn’t given up dreaming about him. Pursued is her second novel.
Finally!! I read my first Suzie Walter book and totally loved MIDNIGHT BLUE! When I tell you, it will give you all the feels, you are just going to have to believe me! If you love second chance romance, you have got to pick up a copy of MIDNIGHT BLUE! It is the first book in the Love In Color series and what better place to start right?
Scarlett Sykes is a single mother who is raising her daughter all on her own with no help from the girl’s father. Harmony is a very well adjusted child who actually runs into her father ten years after she is born, but doesn’t know it…..YET!! Harmony snagged my heart from the get go and she made me giggle over and over again. Its been ten years since Scarlett has seen country music star, Jake Turnquist and still, he has the same effect on her. MIDNIGHT BLUE has them being thrown together when Scarlett is helping to cater A party at Jake’s home. Holy cow, but this story was so stressful at some points!
MIDNIGHT BLUE is a story that will stay with you for a long time after you finish reading it. It took me a few days to start reading another book, but I can’t stop thinking about this one. There were several times I found myself desperately wanting to keep reading, to find out what would happen next, but I was afraid to turn the page, scared of what was going to happen to these characters. Suzie Waltner has a magical way of telling dramatic stories about women, friendship and family. I’m so excited to read more of her books and can’t wait for the next one in this series! Guess who is an auto buy author from now on for me?

I love second chance love stories and Midnight Blue was one that really grabbed my heart! These two not only have the opportunity for a second chance at love together, but also the chance to have the family together that they had long ago dreamed of. I loved seeing a few flashbacks that showed how intertwined these two were in each other’s lives. They started as childhood friends who fell in love and ended up apart, one finding success and the other barely making it paycheck to paycheck.
Harmony was a sweet, yet spunky, character who sometimes listened well and other times found herself making the wrong choice. Her interactions with both Jake and Scarlett felt very realistic given their situation.
The emotions were spot on in this novel. I could feel the anger, the love, the fear of rejection, the hope, and so much more throughout the entire book. I loved the way things worked out for Jake and Scarlett. I wasn’t ready to turn the last page and did not want to say goodbye to these characters. The story wrapped up beautifully, but I still would have really enjoyed an epilogue to their story.

When I read the description for this book, I was immediately interested. It seemed like a great plot line. It surpassed my expectations. I could not put this book down. When I first got it, I read it in a single night. Closer to the book tour, I read it again.
Jake and Scarlett (and Harmony) are each such strong, dynamic, and stubborn characters. It makes for a very interesting story with many unexpected moments.
I am in love with this story. There were so many ups and downs that I really felt for each character. I was pulling for both of them to get their second chance. <3 Suzie Waltner wrote an incredible story that will stay with me for a long time. And it is one I will come back to.
*I received a copy of this book as part of a book tour. I am so thankful I was able to participate. 💙 All thoughts, views and opinions are my own.*
I loved this story of secrets and second chances set in the Nashville music scene! Both Scarlett and Jake have their share of secrets. When Scarlett and Harmony are thrown into Jake's path, two very different worlds collide. Can they work through the past and discover if they have a future? I love the music scene, since both my husband and I are musicians. I also really enjoyed how the author takes a common trope and throws some unexpected twists in there, making it entirely her own. This is a delightful story with well written characters. I received this story from Just Read. This is my honest review.
A very sweet faith-based love story. I loved the main characters, the heartwarming plot, and the tantalizing promise of future stories about some of the supporting characters like Seth and Cassie. I also loved how the characters' faith was gently handled without being preachy.
Many thanks to Janine Rosche for recommending this lovely story.
Music is at the heart of Midnight Blue, a love story that showcases the beauty of second chances and the undeniable power of first love. Our heroine, Scarlett is a single mother with a beautiful young daughter named Harmony. Her ex is the face of a successful country band who had no interest in being a father.
Despite the heartbreak and struggle she's endured — enough to fill a whole songbook of country songs — Scarlett clings to her faith and is determined to give her daughter the best life she can. One that's filled with love and understanding.
Without inching into the dreaded spoiler territory, author Suzie Waltner spins a tale with real heart and soul in the first novel of her "Love in Color" series. Scarlett is a memorable heroine you can't help rooting for, and Jake Turnquist is exactly the kind of guy that's easy to fall for despite his shortcomings (well, most of the time anyway). With evocative turns of phrase and a satisfying, heart-tugging twists along the way, Midnight Blue is a memorable debut you won't be able to put down.
If you know me at all, you know I don't read a lot of contemporary romances or even a lot of contemporary for that matter. I really have to be in the mood. But this one? Oh my goodness was it painful when I had to put it down for other life! I could have EASILY read this thing in one sitting if I had the time. The tension and was MASTERFUL. Scarlet and Jake's past was so well developed and their friendship so deep, that you couldn't help but cheer them on while also recognizing the deep wounds that needed healing before they could truly move forward. I really appreciated that the author didn't shy away from faith in this story and that the characters truly sought God's direction in their lives and it felt truly organic to the narrative instead of added in. Although you are given a satisfying ending, I was NOT ready to let these characters go in the end. I now sit and wait impatiently and have to wait for the next book in this series to release. Can it come tomorrow?? Haha.
Suzie Waltner has written a 5-star book. This is the story of Scarlett and Jake. Scarlett and Jake had been a couple in high school until Jake broke up with her to follow his music career with his band. She finds out she is pregnant. Scarlett sends him a letter to let him know about the baby. She didn't get any response from Jake. When Scarlett is seven months pregnant, she sends Jake an ultrasound picture of the baby. A little later, she receives paperwork from Jake giving up his rights to their baby along with an NDA agreement and a check for $50,000.00. Scarlett is helping her cousin, Cassidy with a catering job and has her daughter Harmony with her. Harmony goes missing and Scarlett goes to look for her. She hears Harmony say "You're Jake Turnquist.? “I sure am, and this is Trigger,” he said. “And who are you, young lady?” “My name’s Harmony. Harmony Sykes.” “Harmony, huh? A pretty name for a pretty girl.” Jake asked Harmony a few more questions and before she could answer them, Scarlett stepped into the room and stopped her. Jake wants to talk to Scarlett but before he can, his date comes looking for him. She tells him that he has a house full of guests waiting on him. Scarlett tells Harmony that Mr. Turnquist has a party to get back to so they have to go. Scarlett goes back to the kitchen and tells Cassidy that she can't do it. Cassidy calms her down and she goes back to work. Jake can't get Scarlett off his mind and he asked Andi one of his friends if she had seen a woman with red hair around. Andi came back and told Jake that she was in the kitchen with Cassidy. Jake got away and when to talk to Scarlett. Cassidy caught him and told him that they had work to do. When Scarlett and Cassidy came back into the kitchen, Scarlett had to go to her job. Jake wants to reconnect with Scarlett but she acts like she doesn't want anything to do with him. He talks with Cassidy and gets her to agree to do the barbecue he is having the next weekend. Cassidy talks Scarlett into going with her to Jake's to help her out. Things happen and Harmony invites Jake and the band to her birthday party the next weekend and Jake tells her that he would be there. At Harmony's party is when Jake finds out that he is her father and he gets mad that he was never told. Scarlett tells him that she wrote to him several times and then she received paperwork saying he gave up his rights to her along with a $50,000.00 check. Jake tells her that he didn't do any of it and wouldn't have done it if he had known. Jake leaves the party and this is when Levi lets Scarlett know that he knows who Harmony's father is. Jake goes for a ride and ends up getting hurt. He needs someone to stay with him and the one person he wants is Scarlett. Scarlett agrees to help him out so that he can get to know Harmony but that is all. She can't be hurt again by him. Will Scarlett and Jake find out who kept Jake from knowing about Harmony? Will they get back together? This was a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone.

Midnight Blue is a sweet romantic second chance love story. Scarlett Sykes lost the love of her life when she was a young woman, to the music industry. Jake chose his singing career with his band over her. Not too long after they split up, she discovers she is pregnant with his daughter, Harmony. After her parent's death, she moves back to her hometown to live with her cousin. Little did she know that her life would change forever.
The characters of Scarlett and Jake are well-developed, and I connected with them right away. Harmony was a special sweet girl and typical of other girls her age. I felt she was well adjusted even with not having a father. Scarlett did an amazing job as a single parent.
There are some tense moments, surprises, and a mystery thrown in. The faith elements of the story shine through letting the reader know that God has a plan for everyone and a special person for them. I enjoyed the storyline very much and couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from the author and voluntarily choose to review it. All opinons are my own.
I don’t know if I am becoming a cynic in my old age, but second chance troupes have not been my favorite reads lately but Midnight Blue has been getting such raving reviews I had to see if I could be won over, and I was.
I’m not a fan of fathers not being told that they are fathers, but I have to hand it to Scarlett. This girl tried everything to let Jake know that he was a dad but was blocked at every single turn, and still chose to raise her daughter all by herself while watching the love of her life rise to fame, leaving her in the dust. Scarlett is resilient, and relies on her faith and the love of her daughter to make it through. She is strength personified and I love seeing a strong heroine.
Jake had my heart from the start. It’s immediately apparent that he’s an upstanding man, and is clearly still carrying a torch for his high school love. Fame has catapulted him into a life that he never could’ve dreamed of, but no matter how much he acquires in his professional career there is still something missing. Scarlett.
This is a very sweet novel with likable characters that I could easily see becoming a Hallmark movie one day. Faith is mentioned throughout, but it is not forced, and the struggles that Jake and Scarlett deal with are very true to life. This novel is well written with heart and a decent flow, and I am excited to see that this is going to be apart of a series. Scarlett’s sister Cassidy was one of my favorite characters, and I’d love to see her get her own story.
Am I still a cynic? Yes, but I was won over by the power of true love and music.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
When past and present collide, will there be room in their hearts to forgive...and love again?
I was thrilled to receive an advanced reader copy of this book to read. Unfortunately for me, an eye infection, then life in general, kept me from reading it before the release date. But that made me even more eager to get started.
What’s odd about this scenario is, as a history buff, I prefer historical romance to contemporary. I’m also not a huge fan of celebrities as main characters. I was willing to fudge on this one, however, because the hero was a country singer. (I mean, Josh Turner anyone? He's kinda who I pictured for Jake.) Once able to start turning those pages, I had a hard time putting the book down, even exhausted after a long plane ride overseas. I don’t sleep well on planes, so I was going on three hours of fitful dozing, and once I collapsed in a real bed, had to force myself to set it aside and get some rest. I snapped it up as soon as I could the following day and finished it.
I love stories about second chances, and that might be what attracted me to this one. Author Suzie Waltner did a beautiful job of mixing an entertaining romance with the truth of God’s forgiveness. One of my favorite lines dealing with this idea of letting go and forgiving came from a supporting character who said, "Don't let your past steal your future or keep you from love."
The setting was a lot of fun, too. I love horses and enjoyed being able to escape to a ranch during the time I had to read.
I definitely look forward to more from this author, especially since she’s already introduced us to quite an eclectic cast of characters, begging to tell their own stories.
If you haven’t already, grab your copy of Midnight Blue and get reading.
Scarlett learned she was pregnant after her relationship with the love of her life Jake ended due him purchasing his dream of a singing career together with his band. It was most important for him. She is a dedicated single mom, determined to giver her daughter Harmony the best life. After nearly ten years they meet by accident and some revelations are made. This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed the writing style. The story has some layers of depth to it. The charcters are well developed and I really felt with and for them.

Why have I never read a book by Suzie Waltner before? I honestly have no idea! While Midnight Blue is the first I have read by her, it will not be the last. I am excited it is the first in the series and can't wait to see who the second book follows!!
I loved this story! Single mom Scarlett has overcome quite a bit in her young life! Single-parenting is no joke, especially with no contact with the father, add in her additional losses, and she could have been leading a bitter existence. But, she doesn't! She is dealing with all life has thrown at her, with her main on raising her daughter.
When Jake waltzes back into Scarlett's life, she understandably wants nothing to do with him. Jake doesn't understand the cold shoulder she is giving him or how she could have seemingly moved on so quickly from him. While miscommunication is one of my reading pet peeves, this is different and done well.
I enjoyed this second-chance romance and was rooting for Scarlett to learn to trust again. I was also rooting for Jake to grow up a bit and do the right thing. He did do one thing where I was like "oh no!" I was completely invested in this story, and I think you would be as well. It's been a while since I read a book this quickly (less than a 24-hour time period).
Thank you to the author and JustRead Tours for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed Midnight Blue. It was my first book by Suzie Waltner and will definitely not be my last. It’s a beautiful story of a second chance romance with an ending full of promise. Even though Scarlett and Jake are not perfect, they are likeable from the start. I also loved that Scarlett depended on her faith and trusted God even when times were tough. I would definitely recommend this book.
I love stories that either have highschool sweethearts or second chances - and this delightful tale has both 💗
And what's not to love about an adorable little girl, a dedicated mommy who buries her hurt deep, and a country music star who realizes that the best hits are always homespun?
Not only are Jake and Scarlett people you just want to pull for, but the melody of faith woven throughout their discord grounds the story with hope. "God had not only redeemed their past hurts, He was making a new path - one paved with love and hope - for their future."
Loved this 💕

The first book in the Love in Color series. Scarlett Sykes her ten year old daughter Harmony and lead singer and the face of a successful country band, Jake Turnquist’s story of a second chance. Jake does not know he had a daughter as they lost touch before she was born. I enjoyed seeing them get a second chance at a happy ending with their Prayers for guidance. This is a new Author to me. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Suzie Waltner is a new to me author and I cannot wait to read more from her. This felt like a really quick read but I was completely engaged in the storyline and the characters. I absolutely loved Jake despite his cluelessness at the beginning of the story. He was definitely swoon-worthy throughout the whole story. There is definitely some tension between these characters as they try to work out their past and come together to mend their present to have a future.
The faith threat was present throughout the whole story and forgiveness was at the forefront of it all. If you enjoy second chance romance stories this is the one for you to try. I can't wait to read the next in this series. Hopefully we will get to see more of Scarlett and Jake but I also can't wait to read more from the other characters that were introduced in this one.
I received a copy of this book from the author and Just Read Tours. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Jake and Scarlett were an item before he made it big in the music industry. About that same time Scarlett found herself expecting but somehow all of her endeavors to contact Jake came up empty and when a letter with an NDA in it along with money not to tell anyone that Jake was the father of her child proved to her that he wanted nothing to do with them. Now they have reconnected, and Jake realizes that the feelings he has for Scarlett are just as strong as before. She is avoiding him but when he finds out that he is a father, and the truth comes out as to why he never received any of her communications, will it begin them rekindling what they once had, and will this time around lead them to a happily ever after? This touching story drew me in an had me cheering for them to find happiness again!

This was my first book by Suzie Waltner and I really enjoyed it!!! Scarlett lost her young love Jake to his music career. When she finds out she is pregnant Jake sends her money and gives up his rights!!! Time passes and Scarlett, Harmony, and Jake's lives cross paths again!!! Will Jake be able to win Scarlett back after everything that's happened? Read and find out!!! Enjoy!!!
Midnight Blue really does pull at the heart strings. When you find your soul mate at such a young age lots of people question if it’s right. Life’s path may take us on trips but if your meant to be life will find away to bring you back to where you need to be.

It was a bit dull and the communication issues between Scarlett and Jake were frustrating and annoying. I mean is Jake an idiot who was too naive and trusting, which led to this outcome? And then how could he not figure out who was behind what happened? It seemed so obvious and was, again, frustrating that the MCs seemed too dumb to catch on fast enough. Was that supposed to be due to innocence? Their belief that all people are good? I don’t know but it just left me bored waiting for the obvious to be discovered and for them to move the story along. I was hoping we’d at least get a sweet epilogue of their lives married with a new baby, but nope, just a cheesy proposal.
Attention Hallmark and GAC - we have another sweet romance that you can easily adapt into a movie for my tv screen. Waltner has penned such a cute story here, one that flows nicely, holds your attention, and just makes you smile. Jake and Scarlett are a cute couple that I want to see more of!
Waltner's faith thread is also worthy of praise. She doesn't shy away from making faith a big part of the story, and I love that. It's eloquent, relatable, and most important believable. So are her characters for that matter. Jake and Scarlett have things from their past to get over, sure, but the way Waltner handles it is brilliant and realistic.
I'm so glad I got to read Waltner's debut novel, and I cannot wait to see what comes next! Contemporary romance fans - you've got another winner here that you need to read pronto. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoy Christian Contemporary Romance books and I definitely LOVE reading books from authors that I am not familiar with. Midnight Blue by Suzie Waltner fits both of those categories for me. It is Book 1 in the Love in Color series.
Scarlett Syke is a Single Mother to a 10yr old daughter. She struggles at times being in a single-income household, but she is determined to give her daughter, Harmony, a wonderful life. Scarlett has always been devasted that Harmony's father never wanted anything to do with her. Jake Turnquist left Scarlett to pursue a Country Music Career. Scarlett contacted him when she was 7 months pregnant to let him know he was going to be a Dad. Her attempts to contact him went unresponded to. 10yrs later Jake is at a party for an accomplishment and he notices Scarlett in the room. Scarlett is assisting the caterer for the party and she and Jake reconnect. Jake is surprised at the news that he has a daughter and makes changes to his schedule to spend time with Scarlett and Harmony. Will Jake finally have the family he always wanted? What would this mean for his Music Career?
Second Chance Romance books are truly one of my favorite themes to read. I really enjoyed this one and it just might be my favorite. I really LOVE that Scarlett went on with life and did her best to give Harmony a wonderful life. She is one determined mom. Jake was career-focused and his career has come a long way. I do like that once he discovers Harmony he decides that family is more important than other things in life. The author does a GREAT job of connecting the Characters and the storyline is wonderful. I HIGHLY recommend this book! FANTASTIC BOOK!
All in all this book was REALLY cute. I never really thought of myself as a cowboy kinda person, but I really loved Jake and Scarlett’s relationship. And Harmony. She was adorable. Only just a few things caught me off guard. One of them being the begging of the book where I felt just a little thrown into the story not really knowing who was who, and was introduced to a lot of characters at the same time. Also, a comment that Cass made in the beginning about Scarlett’s job , and a comment Jake made about Scarlett’s Jeans just kinda threw me like Jake did when he was thrown from Hercules. BUT. That’s alright, that’s okay. Cause A: when you fall out of the saddle you just got to get back up again. And B: Harmony. Do I have a favorite character yes. And I’m about to throw a curve ball with this one. My favorite is Mia and Harmony, so probably not that much of a curveball… I also liked that there was no Georgia slander. I’m proud of my state. In this book it was just a place that Scarlett needed to go because she couldn’t live in Tennessee, AND she got engaged there so. Yeah. Anyways. Great book. Will read the next one if I can get my hands on it. 🤠👍🏻

I can't believe I waited so long to read this beautiful story. I'm thrilled. What a heartwarming story of redemption and love. I usually avoid and do not typically like secret baby stories but this one worked so well. It was perfectly plausible, both Jake and Scarlett were likeable immediately, and the intense reactions and growth throughout from both main characters was spot on. It made the whole withholding of secrets read well. You'll just have to trust because I can't spoil it.
I adored all of the romance plus their daughter who Is the same age as mine currently was just so adorable and realistic. Loved the addition of dogs and horses. Overall a beautiful, heartwarming romance deserving of the hype it received early on. I'm a new fan.
Suzie Waltner's debut novel is a sweet second chance romance story. She pens wonderful characters that pull you right into the story and setting.
Music is at the center of this story with the hero being a Country Music star. Most of what happens within the story happens around the band and its members.
I love it when authors have children in their stories and Harmony is just the cutest! It was fun watching her relationship with her dad grow.
Ms. Waltner wove in a little mystery as well which was fun.
This is a great debut and the first book in a series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a fun read! Admittedly, this is a genre I read often, and I've enjoyed Suzie Waltner's past books. What I loved about Midnight Blue is that she took a farely common theme and added a riveting twist. I'd explain, but I don't want to spoil anything.
The book drops you directly into the action right away and keeps you flipping pages (well, tapping the screen), anxious to learn the mystery of the characters' pasts and how their future will unfold. Having lived in Nashville and a big music fan, I loved that aspect of the setting. Both Jake and Scarlett are a mixture of complicated and likable which in turn makes them very relatable. The variety of the other characters was well-balanced and realistic as well.
I have a good guess as to who the next book in the series will be about, and I can't wait to read it!
You know, I'm usually not a fan of the single mom trope, and in my opinion, it's a little risky having a child in the book, but Suzie did both of these things really well. And as a mom of a 9 year old, I think Harmony was portrayed completely realistically, and I was completely immersed in the story.
The only thing that felt a little abrupt to me was when Scarlett told Harmony about her dad, but that's one thing out of over 200 pages. I mean, you know it's a good book when you don't want to put it down to drive your kids to VBS, or you're wondering what's going to happen next when you're picking up another kid from work. I NEEDED to know how everything was going to work out. Also, I may be in love with Jake. Sorry, hubby.
