In the middle of nowhere, you can lose more than your way…

Moving to the countryside with Patrick was supposed to be my fresh start. But from the moment we arrived, something felt… off. The locals are strange, and I feel like I’m being watched. The constantly moving shadows outside our window can’t just be from the trees, can they?

And when someone breaks into our home, I can’t shake the feeling someone’s out to get me.

The more isolated I feel, the more the cracks begin to show. Am I being driven to the edge, or am I losing my mind? This beautiful house was meant to be my haven, but now it feels like a prison.

And the real danger? It might be closer than I ever imagined…

An eerie and unsettling psychological thriller that will have you double checking you locked the door

3.5⭐️ rounded up.
A very straight forward story and the twists didn’t surprise me but nevertheless it was entertaining. It was fast-paced with short chapters that keep will keep you on the edge of your seat.

When Imogene and her husband move to the countryside it was supposed to be their fresh start. But from the moment they arrived, things started to feel off. The locals are strange, and is Imogene being watched? Then someone breaks into their home, and Imogene starts to see things. Is she being driven to the edge, or losing her mind? Is there any real danger? Or is it her past haunting her?

Imogen and Patrick just moved from London to the middle of nowhere, where the nearest town is four miles away. She’s a painter and he’s a lawyer, and they want to start a family together. Patrick has an adult daughter from his first marriage, Prim, who hates Imogen because she and Patrick were having an affair when he was still married to Prim’s mom, Arabella. Getting out of the city and escaping that mess of a situation seemed like the perfect idea…until they moved in.

Immediately, creepy things start happening. There are dead animals everywhere (not just the ones that were taxidermied by the previous owner), Imogen was almost hit by a car and she feels like someone is watching her. The people who live in this tiny area of cottages all seem very strange; when Imogen goes to town, weird things seem to always happen. There is a group of kids who are constantly causing trouble with vandalism and arson. The only person who seems halfway normal is her new neighbor, Maureen. Despite her being a quirky old woman, she’s the only person Imogen has, as her husband is often in London for work. The two women become friends as things go from strange to dangerous…

This was a really enjoyable read, and I was very happy with the ending. It started going down a path that I see in a lot of thrillers, and that path sometimes comes off as an easy to way to explain things and conclude a story. I was like here we go again…then everything flipped and I realized I had it all wrong! The end of the book is quite a shocker, with no clichés or tired formulas. I was going to give this four stars, rounded up from 3.5, but now it’s getting four stars, rounded down from 4.5. That ending made all the difference.

(Thank you to Boldwood Books, H.M. Lynn and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on June 12, 2025.)

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an advanced copy in exchange for honest feedback.

I really enjoyed The Silent House! It was super twisty, pulling you in slowly but keeps you guessing the whole way through. The atmosphere is really eerie—in the best way—and the creepy house vibe was spot-on.

I love a story where the main character slowly unravels and is made to feel like they’re on the verge of a psychotic break, and this one did not disappoint! The FMC was easy to root for, and I liked how the story balanced spooky moments with deeper emotional topics. It’s not just about possible ghosts; there’s a lot going on under the surface.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because a few side characters felt kind of flat, and there were moments where I wanted a bit more explanation. But overall, it’s a solid read if you’re into suspense with a supernatural edge.

I am a bit torn as a write this review for THE SILENT HOUSE by H. M. Lynn. It definitely has positives going in its favor, including short chapters enhancing the suspense, making for a very quick read. Admittedly, it was very difficult for me to put the book down with its fast pace. And along the vein of books with potential unreliable narrators, it absolutely kept me guessing throughout, which is always a good thing.

We are introduced to Imogen, our protagonist, who moves to a countryside retreat with her husband, Patrick. Both have plenty of baggage and are hoping for a fresh start as a newly married couple. Where the book fell a bit short for me was not having enough character development for our mains, and not including more of Imogen’s backstory. Therefore, I never truly connected with her or any of the characters. Imogen, in fact, was quite unlikable and therefore hard to sympathize with in many instances—at least for me.

And regarding the ending, it felt a tad rushed in my opinion. I would have liked more in terms of dialogue, confrontation, and resolution. Would I recommend it though? Yes!! All things considered, it is a fast-paced thriller that definitely kept me engaged and quickly turning the pages. I enjoyed it overall, making it perfect for an entertaining summer read.

I want to thank NetGalley, H. M. Lynn, and Boldwood Books for gifting me the ARC of THE SILENT HOUSE! It was such a privilege to read this before publication. And I appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!

I was hooked from the start! I loved how the end of each chapter made you want to keep on reading, the twists and turns throughout constantly had me second guessing, and the fact it made you believe that Imogen could have been the problem and everything that went on whilst in the new house was all false??? Loved it!! Would definitely recommend.

City Dwellers, Welcome to the Countryside!

Imogen moves to the countryside with Patrick, hoping for a fresh start. However, upon arrival, she senses something is wrong—strange locals, an unsettling atmosphere, and shadows outside their home lead her to feel constantly watched. After a break-in, she becomes increasingly paranoid, questioning her sanity as she feels more isolated. What was meant to be a peaceful haven turns into a prison, with the true threat possibly lurking closer than she realizes.

I know, it sounds a bit odd, but the cover of this book practically screamed at me to pick it up, and I simply couldn’t resist. Once I started reading, it was nearly impossible to put down!

Now, let’s talk about the main character. Imogen had her moments of being a tad whiny, but given everything she went through, I was willing to cut her some slack. However, there were times when Patrick made her feel downright crazy and hormonal, and I found myself wishing I could reach into the pages and give him a good shake! Seriously, there were moments when I thought, “Imogen, come on! Grow a backbone, girl!” At one point, she was blaming nearly everyone for the chaos unfolding around her, and I could only imagine how that must have looked to the other characters—and to the readers, for that matter.

The author did a fantastic job of painting bizarre occurrences with vivid detail, and the secluded setting added an extra layer of creepiness that was just perfect. It was all fittingly eerie and well-executed.

As for the ending? It was as spunky as the rest of the book and far less predictable than I anticipated. I found myself guessing right up until the last moment, and when the main twist hit? Let’s just say it was a mind-blowing tornado of emotions!

If you enjoy piecing together whodunits, predicting outcomes, and believe that the past has a way of haunting us, then this book is the ideal pre-Halloween read. It’s delightfully creepy, perfectly suited for those early evenings when strange things seem to happen around the house. Give it a shot and let me know what you think!

Thank you, Boldwood Books, for the digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Format: E-Book
Genre: Psychological Thriller

*Thank you to H.M Lynn and NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love myself a good psychological thriller. A lot of them are the perfect length to get you absorbed into the story and have it all wrapped up by the end.

I really enjoyed The Silent House, it hooked me in from the first page. Every chapter finished on some sort of cliffhanger that sucked you right into the next one. The length of the chapters were no more than 10 minutes at my reading speed, which made progressing through this book easy.

The FMC’s name is Imogen, which made me super giddy as an Empyrean fan. There are many hints to the traumatic experiences she had as a child throughout the book, making me question her level of mental stability. In all honesty when it comes to this genre, I don't trust anyone or their mental stability! Everyone is shady and suspicious. I wish after everything Imogen had been through that her fight to survive was expanded on.

I was a huge fan of the thrill. Even experiencing moments of adrenaline and inner anxiety from scenes. The ending was full of lies and deceit. It was definitely a wild and crazy ride!

Imogen and her husband Patrick move to a cottage in the countryside for a new start in their marriage. Imogen has been trying to get pregnant and has had problems with Patrick's adult daughter. Imogen is an artist and thinks the country would be a perfect place to paint. Their first day there they meet a neighbor woman named Maureen and she doesn't seem overly friendly to Imogen. This begins a wild ride of a story where the action is fast and furious and poor Imogen finds strange things happening like someone setting fire to her artist studio with her locked inside, to mysterious funeral wreaths left in her house. We can't tell if she is being gaslighted or is having a mental breakdown.

Parts of this story seemed so familiar to me I was convinced I read it before but then other parts were different so it must be just a common story trope. The author does a good job of not letting us know who to trust and I flew through the book to find out what in the world was going on. It is similar to stories by Freida McFadden and will be a great beach read that can be read in one sitting. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this ARC in exchange for a review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Silent House is a gripping psychological thriller that kept me hooked through the whole book. I loved the tense atmosphere and the constant feeling of unease as Imogen struggled to figure out what was real and who she could trust. The short chapters made it a really easy and fast read, and I enjoyed how the suspense built steadily throughout.

Even though I guessed part of the twist, there were still plenty of surprises that kept me turning the pages. A really solid thriller that fans of psychological suspense will enjoy.

This was a great, spooky story made even better with Rose Robinson as the narrator, she does such an excellent job setting the tone and feel of this world. It’s full of mystery and second guessing all the way with quick, sharp shooting chapters.

I found the ending fairly predictable of the genre, but it didn’t put me off at all. I’d recommend this creepy, and engrossing read!

I went in to this book semi-blind. I had originally read the description, but forgot about it when I starting reading it. I'm happy that I forgot what it was about, because in the end I wanted more. Was it eerie and psychological, as describe...maybe somewhat. I may feel differently if I liked the FMC. I just found her too erratic or susceptible to whatever happened next. I don't mind characters that second guess and try to distiguish betwen what's happening and not, but Imogen was just gullible and not the best of characters. The gaslighting was insane, but not in an ok this matches the story and what it's trying to portray. The end twist was good, but I figured it out before the reveal was complete; and the ending just fell flat in the epilogue. I need the epilogue to punch or tie things up, this just ended.

I had a mixed bag with Silent House. The plot was pretty straightforward, so I didn’t get too surprised by any twists or turns. That said, the short chapters kept the pace moving, making it a quick and easy read. It’s probably more of a light suspense book for folks who prefer it simple, but it didn’t really stick with me.

Okay I loved this book a lot. I found Imogen to be kind of annoying but it was okay. The plot twist was so twisty I didn't see any of that coming. This book had so many twists and turns right from the start and I could not put it down. I had to know what happened.

Ahhh, another book where the female main character may or may not be crazy. This one was very slow, taking most of the book to build up to something exciting, and then it was over as quickly as it happened, leaving much to be desired. This one just didn’t hit the spot for me.

This was a very quick, enjoyable read! It had some spooky aspects to it, and kept you guessing until the end with all the twists thrown in.
I did not expect the ending and it definitely threw me off and did not disappoint!
There was a lot of talk about pregnancy, and I did think it was a little too much at times with being repetitive.
Overall, I really liked it and would recommend if you wanted a quick thriller!

Fast-Paced, Brain-Cleansing Thriller

This one was exactly what I needed, a nice brain cleanse between heavier reads. Simple, fast-paced, and easy to fly through. The main female character was a bit naïve, but it fit the tone and made for a familiar ride if you’re a fan of Freida McFadden-style thrillers.

There were definitely some parts I skimmed certain scenes didn’t feel necessary and dragged slightly but overall, it moved quickly and held my attention. The ending was satisfying and wrapped things up nicely, which I always appreciate in a thriller.

If you’re in a reading slump, waiting for a highly-anticipated release, or just want a quick escape, this is a solid pick. Not groundbreaking, but definitely entertaining.

Very good plot twists. Took a while to build up the story until it got quick paced but very good read that kept you guessing till the end. In a nutshell it’s about Patrick and Imogene and their new marriage, new pregnancy, and new home in the country. Patrick had an affair with Imogene on his ex, Arabella. Arabella and Patrick have an adult daughter, Prim, whom Imogene doesn’t get along with. Their new house has one neighbor, Maureen, an older lady who lives with her dog. Patrick trains two hours in to London for work as needed and Imogene is left to unpack and settle into their new house on her own. While home strange occurrences start happening and she feels as if her life is in danger when she’s trapped in her Art studio when it catches fire. She goes from blaming local kids, to her agent, to prim, to thinking she’s paranoid imagining it all. It ends up being Maureen who reveals that she’s Arabella’s mother. Imogene was Arabella’s neighbor when she was a young g child and at the age of 10 Imogene called the police on her when she discovered the mother left her newborn home alone. DCS came and removed the baby but didn’t know the baby had an extreme allergy to milk and once DCS gave her a formula bottle the baby died. Arabella was beside herself with grief and during that time met Patrick who was a fling. Arabella got pregnant fast with prim and Patrick married her out of guilt. Arabella fell in and out of depression over the years and he started a wandering eye. Maureen entertained the idea for him to seek revenge on the person who “killed” Arabella’s first child. They hunted down Imogene thru her art shows and Patrick befriended her then started sleeping with her. Patrick however developed feelings for her and left his wife and knocked up Imogene. Maureen then intervened to make her life hell and pay for killing her granddaughter. Arabella lied to Patrick saying she was terminally ill and Patrick spent time in London with her when Maureen would torment Imogene. In the end Maureen killed Patrick in cold blood and while Imogene tried to escape she ran over Maureen and killed get. Imogene fled to the town for help and the locals got the police involved and saved Imogene. The book ends with Imogene pregnant at one of her art exhibitions where get gallery sold out in the first 20 minutes due to a recent article being published about her traumatic childhood upbringing and her most recent trauma.

Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this eARC.

📖 H.M. Lynn’s The Silent House is steeped in unease from the very first page. The novel thrives on silence—not just literal quiet, but the kind of oppressive stillness that makes every creak of the floorboards feel like a warning. Lynn crafts an environment where the house itself becomes a character: claustrophobic, watchful, and unsettlingly alive.

🧠 Rather than relying on overt horror, the book leans into psychological tension. The protagonist’s perception of reality is constantly tested, and readers are invited to question whether the menace lies in external forces or within the mind. This ambiguity is central to the novel’s power—it blurs the line between paranoia and genuine threat, leaving the reader in a state of constant doubt.

🎭The characters are drawn with subtlety, each carrying fragments of trauma, secrets, or suppressed emotions. Lynn avoids melodrama, instead letting small gestures and fractured conversations reveal the weight of their inner lives. The protagonist’s isolation is palpable, and the supporting cast amplifies the sense of mistrust and disconnection.

🌀 The pacing is deliberately measured, building dread through suggestion rather than spectacle. Lynn uses repetition, silence, and fragmented imagery to mimic the disorientation of living in a space that feels hostile. The narrative structure mirrors the protagonist’s unraveling psyche, making the reader complicit in the descent into uncertainty.

⚖️ Isolation and alienation: The house becomes a metaphor for psychological imprisonment.

- The novel probes how unreliable memory can distort reality.

- Ordinary domestic spaces are transformed into sites of menace, challenging the assumption that home equals safety.

✨ The Silent House is not a thriller that rushes toward resolution—it lingers, unsettling the reader with its quiet menace. Lynn’s strength lies in her ability to evoke dread without spectacle, crafting a story that is as much about the fragility of the human mind as it is about external danger.

The Silent House by H. M. Lynn was a great quick psychological thriller and I loved it, especially as it was creepy with brilliant twists and turns throughout that will have you turning the pages over quickly to find out what happens next. It was a brilliant read and a book that I sat and read all day until I finished.

When Imogen and Patrick are moving to the countryside, they are both hoping for a fresh new start together.
London were they lived, was becoming too hectic for both of them and they just need thing to slow down. Imogen is a painter and Patrick a lawyer, Patrick already has a grown up daughter from his previous marriage called Prim. But, Prim dislikes Imogen so much, because her dad was having an affair with her whilst married to her mum Arabella. Prim will never forgive Imogen!

This new house is in the middle of nowhere, and the nearest town is four miles away All excited and looking forward to the future and hopefully to start a new family of their own, but when they drive up to their new house Imogen senses something is very wrong and the locals are so strange. . . . . . . . there's a strange and unsettling atmosphere all around them. Now inside the house, Imogen and Patrick see's shadows outside their home and they both feel they are being watched. . . . . but why do they feel that way?
There is a break-in, and now Imogen becomes so paranoid, and starts questioning everything. She feel she is loosing her sanity and becomes more isolated. Imogen can no shake off she is not safe and someone is out to get her!

But, who???

WoW this book is so good!!!!

Super 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read.

I highly commend The Silent House ,

Synopsis:
Painter Imogen is ecstatic - together with her husband Patrick they bought a dreamy little cottage with her own art studio - and they’re trying for a baby. Soon, a dent is put into her newfound joy when she gets acquainted with the strange neighbour Maureen, a lonely lady with an oversized dog who gives the couple a strange housewarming gift. When more strange things happen, Imogen is no longer sure who she can trust - and that includes her husband…

I will say that it was evident right from the beginning who the perpretrator was, so I wasn’t surprised by that revelation. However I did enjoy the reading experience - give me a lone woman in a cabin in a remote village anytime, I am a sucker for those books. “The Silent House” had everything: an adversary with a cause, an absent gaslighting husband, a protagonist with a dark past, and a sinister atmosphere.

I felt that Imogen’s background story was far too short and had the author chosen a flashback-style narrative and started the book with her past, the "great reveal" would’ve been more credible and mind-blowing. As it was, I hardly remembered why the perpetrator had a grudge against her in the first place, making the plot twist far less impactful. As the reader, I would've liked a fuller explanation .

If you’re looking for a great cabin-in-the-woods-style book, “Run Time” by Catherine Ryan Howard should be your first choice, sorry.“The Silent House” has lots of room for improvement, but it definitely had promising elements such as the captivating language, a likeable protagonist and it's ideal for people who like to cosy up with a good book in winter.

So here’s the deal: I picked up The Silent House thinking it would be your typical haunted house story—and wow, was I wrong in the best possible way. This is not your average “boo!” book. It’s a deliciously creeping descent into isolation, gaslighting, and the kind of countryside that makes you want to run back to the city and hug a lamppost.

Our main girl (you’ll root for her hard) moves with her partner Patrick to a cozy little country home—except cozy quickly turns to creepy. The neighbors are giving “Stepford” meets “don’t ask questions,” shadows move like they’ve got an agenda, and every creak of the house sounds like a whispered warning. And let’s talk about that break-in… 😬 That’s the moment the unease morphs into full-on paranoia—and honestly, same, girl.

H.M. Lynn’s writing? Silky smooth with just enough bite. It’s like sinking into a warm bath and realizing the water’s laced with secrets. The pacing tightens like a noose—slow enough to build dread, fast enough to make you forget to breathe. I genuinely didn’t know whether our narrator was spiraling into madness or if something truly sinister was afoot. Spoiler: it’s both. Maybe. Sort of. READ IT.

Character-wise, this book nails the emotional unraveling. Patrick is… well, let’s just say you’ll want to throw a mug at him more than once. The tension between them is thick, and watching the main character question her reality, her partner, and eventually herself? Whew. Buckle in.

🏡💀 4.5/5 “do not move to the countryside” stars.

This was a pretty typical thriller about paranoia from a new home that's nowhere near as perfect as it seems. Imogen and her husband, Patrick, move to the countryside into their new home, and weird things start happening almost from the start. They only have a few neighbors, but their closest neighbor introduces herself right away and immediately creeps Imogen out. Of course, Patrick writes her off as a lonely old woman, and Imogen lets it go. Then she starts believing she's being watched and that someone has been in their home. It follows that way for a bit, and at least Patrick starts believing her, unlike many stories where the husband ignores her worry.

The story continues on and soon Imogen discovers Patrick has been lying about being in contact with his ex, and again, Imogen lets it go. She also has a stepdaughter named Prim who completely hates Imogen and isn't allowed in their home which is apparently normal and ok with Patrick. Then the ending comes which isn't surprising at all and suddenly it gets even more ridiculous and then it's over. Clearly, I wasn't a fan.

There weren't enough characters to make the story suspenseful, and most readers will see the end coming a mile away. Maybe if the story was longer, or not so much given away throughout, I don't know. And even the title is a bit off and doesn't capture the themes of the story. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you need something to read, it flows quickly and isn't long and drawn out, and maybe that's enough?
