Beneath the Dragoneye Moons #11

Beneath the Dragoneye Moons: Mandate of Heaven

Rate this book
Sentinel Dawn has returned.

As Sentinel, Elaine has no end of tasks. From a shakedown run to find a fellow Earther, to Iona's new kitsune [Squire] Nina, to a whole new set of skills and abilities from [Loremaster], Elaine is busy. Her name is starting to be known on the world stage, whether she likes it or not.

Through all that, Elaine is informed that the Sixth Legion is going to be deployed to the Han Empire, to put their thumb on the scale in the great civil war, with each of the factions claiming the Mandate of Heaven has fallen on their shoulders. From the thousands of men and women of the Sixth, engaged in deadly battle, to a low-level and vulnerable [Squire], Elaine has to shield and protect her allies, and prevent them from coming to harm. As an Immortal, she's not supposed to be interfering in mortal affairs. If the deadly Wardens catch wind of her, a swift execution is the best she can hope for.

The bigger question looms, her sacred [Oath] demanding a response -

When does she heal her enemies?

A good continuation of the series. The whole thing with the fellow reincarnator felt a bit out of place in the book and belonged more to the 1st of April web novel chapter, but fine, it was brief. The Han civil war arc was pretty decent, war is brutal and an oath sworn healer is a bit out of place in it especially when attached to an army. It is still very much a web novel in book format though, so if you don't like things to drag out a bit, I do wonder how you got to volume 11. So a good read and what I expected from the series by now.

onward

To be honest, I struggled at times to stay in the narrative. I understand the ethical and moral challenges facing the main character, But it felt indulgent. The number of paragraphs devoted to exploring questions that should have been answered prior to deployment.

I don’t know if I want to continue with this. It’s gotten to ludicrous levels of power. There isn’t a clear path forward without inventing a new threat.

Still a fascinating series.

And the soap box is back.

The world is still interesting, but the story is drifting. There is no large arc, no goal that we can see, just random drifting, from the school, to the empire, random worthless missions, a few interesting fights, but no goal. Add to this that all male side characters are now dead or sidelined (Julius and Night are all that left, and Julius is week and getting old, and night is semi retired), the story is losing steam.

Also, the author jumps back on his soapbox, this time for abortion. TLDR, the shimagu body snatching mind enslaving parasites desearve more thought than a gestating baby (aka a "clump of cells").
We get a whole chapter about how Elain and her oath of "do no harm" are totally fine with abortion. Ochi and the shimagu still haunts her, but "getting rid of a clump of cells" is totally fine. Body stealing, mind enslaving parasites? Totally worth letting live while the sapient creature enslaved is barely worth saving, and it is definitely worth agonizing over for years after. An unborn baby that was created with the women's full consent (this was a birth control malfunction, not something darker)? Nah, that clump of cells barely deserves a second thought.

War!

Sentinel Dawn and the 6th Legion go to, survive, and start to come back from war.

More fun beneath the Dragoneye Moons.

Spoilers below ...

Elaine/Dawn/Bunny has a hard time at war, but levels extensively. Things don't go as planned, Zhao ends up "winning", a Guardian shows up due to Wei's bad behavior.
Auri decides to pursue Lava as her 3rd class.

Nina speaks her vow and becomes the Fox Valkyrie and leaves Iona's side. Iona is not thrilled, but will eventually be able to handle it.
She semi-surpises Elaine with her proposal post Elaine's 768 main class up. Elaine has a ceremonial sword that she and Auri forged. Iona has something surprising in her hands, though that will have to wait until next volume.

Final word in the book shows the Phoenixes that the kirin know learning of Auri. This was something Reinhart promised to take care of back when they were all roommates at the School.

One of my new favorite authors...

Great new takes on morality and what issues one might have with different oaths and / or faith. Hmmm, to say it's omniscient is not far off. It's almost like someone's wishes and dreams becoming a reality in just their books. I do love how ethical it is it speaks to most passionate Pacifists! Ehhh my opinion might as well be a blade of grass in a field lol. Channeled blink though is an awesome magical trick that would be my favorite skill in the system. Thank you to the author of this series much love to all and may you be blessed.

Beautiful, but still a disjointed ending.

The main storyline is exciting, sometimes sad, and fun to read. The relationship between Elaine and Iona is sweet. Their Fox grows up a lot, as does Auri. Those parts were a bit sad. The end of the book again had events out of order and some read like a blooper reel. Just put them in the story chronologically already, because it can be confusing and annoying. The Kirin and the Phoenixes at the end are funny. I think that will be a hilarious meeting.

I’m really not sure about this book, it starts quite well, but by halfway I was having some doubts. The story seemed to be more of a collection of random incidents and quite a lot of it really didn’t make sense, at times some of the arguments and discussions could have been made by an agitated toddler.
Also the ending of the book can only be described as ‘messy’, I suspected the author might be finishing the series, but this was so weirdly written it seems there might be another book after all.
If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.

power level

A lot of musings about the nature of war while in war, and some Lawful Stupid actions driven by her Oath (healing both sides of an army). She gets a lot of levels and some cool moments.

Is it possible for her to be a Guardian, if she goes down that path rather than reaching for divinity?

If Elaine wanted to hide her power or go incognito, could she use wizardry to heal?

If her own biomancy only took a thousand mana, could she combine wizardry and biomancy rather than a class skill?

Could she enchant or forge a healing wand?

Enjoyable but Enough With the Oath

Pretty good book in the series. Squire Nina was a great new character and it was gratifying to see her overcome her background. A lot of action and it was nice to see Elaine doing ranger things, back in a war. I enjoyed her encounter with another Earthling. I really got sick of Elaine monologuing about who she can save and why and how many according to her Oath. It just goes on and on and that was annoying.

A well-written story that held my interest throughout. Carries on from the finish of the last book, with the consequences, good and bad, of both Elaines and Ionas decisions. The modern Sentinel job is compared to the ancient one. From working alone or with a small team, can Elaine learn to work with an army? Can Elaine work in an army in wartime, and still follow her Oath? Can Iona work with Elaine and follow her own Oath? I'll leave those questions for you to find out, no spoilers here.

Best one in a bit! It can wander a bit and have overelaborate philosophical inquiries but overall the plot kept me interested and her time as a soldier was great, bloopers had me remembering time during my service as well.

Going in I had heard there was a lot of debate about Nina so there was a bit trepidation there but think it was handled really well, obviously it was a horrible act but very much in tune with her character and the creed is perfect.

Afraid to spar

But perfectly fine giving an abortion.

The author would spend pages debating the morality of the simplest things, but then turn right around and give an abortion without any real thought. To make it worse, a baby is delivered a scant grew chapters later and what could have been a great spot for reflection was just brushed over.

Clearly it was the authors personal belief imposed on the character. It was sloppy and unwarranted. It broke immersion.

Sentinel dawn returns to a legion

I continue to enjoy these books, litrpg at its finest. I love Elaine as a character as she struggles with war and her Oath while keeping a legion whole. If youve made it this far in the series you will love this installment.

If you are reading a review on a random book 11, go to book one, read it. They are excellent🙂.

This book feels much more like the early books of the series than the last couple did and it's an excellent read.

Really good, again.

Not sure what else I can say. This is still a really good series.

It felt like this book was a bit longer than the last book, so that was nice. A lot happened.

Loved it

Once again Selkie knocks it out of the park. Elaine continues to evolve as a character, form new relationships that impact her future, and continue on her path. The ending was amazing, and the last two chapters were everything I was hoping for. As always, can't wait for the next one!
