When five friends embark on a hiking holiday across the Lincolnshire Wolds, little did they know that one of them wouldn’t return. The fog is thick, the morning air is frigid, and when the clouds finally lift, Lily Hughes’s body is discovered at the bottom of a steep slope.
Detective Inspector George Larson is lost; the strain of so many deaths, the responsibility he bears, and the memory of his beloved wife has forced him to take leave. He whiles away the days in his little cottage, leaving the investigation to his trusted Detective Sergeant, Ivy Hart. It’s only when the weight of the burden becomes evident that he steps in. The question is, is he returning to work for her sake, or is he running from a truth he cannot bear to face?
Lily Hughes’s friends are close. Lifelong friends that would do anything for each other. But when George begins to pick at the surface, cracks in the bonds appear that only through sound police work and tenacity, can he prise open to reveal the killer. What secret did Lily discover? Will the bond that ties the friends together prove strong enough for them to get through the ordeal? And who has a past so terrible, they would do anything to conceal it?
The Devil Inside Her is the fourth book in the bestselling Deadly Wolds crime series from the million-selling author, Jack Cartwright, the author of the Wild Fens Mystery series, and the DCI Cook Mysteries.
I enjoyed this British crime drama where Ivy finds leadership challenging while George grieves the death of his wife.
There's a murder of a close friend and the lies complicate the case.
This was a well-written story full of twists and turns set in the beautiful Wolds. I liked how grief was portrayed, all the stages described well and the actions involved. The characters suited the plot and there was a great sense of place.
Another cracking read from Jack Cartwright! This is one of his best I feel. DI George Larson is grieving the death of his beloved wife, leaving his DS Ivy in charge of the team. Unfortunately she is also suffering the loss of her marriage and children and struggles to solve the clues of the death of a woman on a hiking trip. George returns to take the reins once more, bringing calm when there was chaos. But even he struggles to make sense of the clues as lies and omissions are everywhere. This had so many twists and turns, suspects galore and motives to find. I loved every alley we were drawn down only to find another! George is much softer in this and we learn more about his life with Grace. Highly recommend and looking forward to more!
what do we have? a group of friends glamping in the Lincolnshire wolds, a DI who is currently on compassionate leave, a DS who is fighting her own personal battles, while trying to stamp her authority on the team as SIO, which only seems to upset them. after finding one of the friends dead down a steep slope, the investigation twists from one suspect to another, as alibis are looked at, and these, in turn, lead the team along various routes, we finally find out 'who dun it' towards the end, after all the thoughts of 'yes! they were definitely the murderer' only to find they weren't 🤷♀️ another 5⭐️ title from Jack Cartwright, roll on the next one 👏
A walking holiday in the Wolds with old friends. What could possibly go wrong?
A sudden carpet of thick fog descended and ome of the walkers was found dead and another went missing. Ivy was trying desperately to keep the team together while George was taking compassionate leave after Grace’s death. Everyone was feeling the pressure… who would step up to help solve the crime? The answers might surprise you!
George is grieving Grace's death not back at work yet and Ivy is running the investigation into a woman's death on the side of the road while she was hiking with friends. But Ivy does not have the management style that endears her to the team. George will have to come to grips with Grace being gone and get back in the game to help the team.. a good mystery of who done it!
Character development...Outstanding. Plot...Excellent. Story line...incredible. Ivy and George...unbeatable. This is one of the most intense, one of the most emotional endings that help make this book one of the best novels you will ever read. Highly Recommended.
Really good story, definitely didn't see that coming. Ivy really is hard work and sometimes not at all likeable but she does sort herself out, eventually. Would def recommend this series of books.
Cracking characters Jack has and a wonderful and exciting plot, made even better because it was set in a beautiful part of the Wolds where we live to that end it became more alive than normal. A ripping yarn Jack thanks so much. Looking forward to the next episode of George,Ivy and the team
George is missing Grace but Ivy needs his guidance on this murder. Two people lose their lives over another man’s greed. Twisting and turning with their small team they solve the case. Good read.
I was absorbed in this book but was very surprised to find the killer was someone i'd totally diamissed early on. So at least I know I'm not the great detective I thought I was so need to keep reading to try harder
Each book in this series is absolutely brilliant, DI Larson and DS Ivy are great characters that are so well written you believe they are real people along with the rest of the Team,
Great characters, interesting stories, excellent settings. I’ve really enjoyed these books and hope there are more. This was the best book of the series.
Hart takes the reins while George is on compassionate leave. She thinks she can't handle it and the team notice George back. Between them they resolve the mystery.
This is the second book in the series that I had tears in my eyes as I was reading the last chapter. Thought the first half of the story dragged a bit, but enjoyed the second half.
I think this is my favourite of the Deadly Wolds series so far. Lots of red herrings but ultimately a good “old-fashioned” whodunnit! I love George and Ivy and their relationship, and the dynamics between them and the rest of the team
