Brook Eden has never known where she truly belongs. When her friend Justin uncovers the fact that she is possibly a missing heiress from Yorkshire, Brook leaves the sun of the Mediterranean to travel to the moors of the North Sea and the estate of her supposed family.

The mystery of her mother's death haunts her, and though her father is quick to accept her, the rest of the family and the servants of Whitby Park are not. Only when Brook's life is threatened do they draw close—but will their loyalty come too late to save Brook from the same threat that led to tragedy for her mother?

As heir to a dukedom, Justin is no stranger to balancing responsibilities. I'm a huge fan of Roseanna White's--I've read and adored every single one of her novels and novellas. I'm so glad I recently read The Lost Heiress; it was just as amazing as I thought it would be!

Brook is just the kind of heroine I love having for a friend for a few hundred pages; and there were several hundred pages worth of her story to enjoy. Not that I'm complaining. By the time I reached the last quarter of the book, I didn't want it to end. But at the same time, I wanted to know the answer to the great mystery revolving around Brook's mother.

A mystery we wouldn't have even known about had it not been for Justin, Brook's friend who enables her to return to her family. I loved that the first couple chapters of Brook's story loosely mirrors the plot of Lori Wick's The Hawk and the Jewel--that whole raised-in-another-country bit was fascinating. But it was also over and done with pretty quickly; Roseanna situates us back in England fairly soon so that the real fun can begin.

And that real fun involves a softly unfolding romance, complete with misinterpreted feelings, danger, bungled plots by well-meaning (or not so well-meaning) characters. I so enjoyed this story and how it evokes all the reasons I love Downton Abbey in a clean, Christian read perfect for a late-summer vacation or autumnal enjoyment. I highly recommend Roseanna White's latest!

Roseanna White is my favorite author. Her stories always have such interesting history, philosophy, and spirituality woven together with the romance. I love everything she writes, and I'm excited that she has taken her stories to Edwardian England for a fun new twist. If you enjoy The Lost Heiress, give her Biblical novels a chance too. Those are my very favorites.

Loss surrounds the beautiful Brook Eden like a well worn blanket; her life has been pieced together with both love and rejection from those in Monaco who have accepted her into their family, even if in name only; bypassing the fact that her real identity, following the tragic death of her mother, has remained an unsolved mystery; until now.

Justin Wildon, also known as Lord Harlow, and soon to become known as the Duke of Stafford, has given Brook the gift of identity, accompanying his beloved childhood friend to England in order to meet her family for the first time. In the blink of an eye this whispered illegitimate offspring has become the Baroness of Berkeley, with a vast fortune at her fingertips and a loving father, the famed Lord Ambrose Whitby, who is overjoyed to finally be reunited with his missing daughter.

In spite of Brook's "happily-ever-after", there are dark forces beyond her control which seek to destroy the young heiress, her life is severely threatened and heinous shadows lurk among her nearly constant, reoccurring nightmares. The one person who has stood by her side and loved her unconditionally for most of her life, now seems determined to put formal distance between them, merely to devote attention to his own family fortune. Brook's impetuous, independent spirit suffers mightily and her heart is nearly broken before God intervenes and transforms her fear into faith. But will it be too late for Brook and Justin? Will greed, betrayal and hatred among friends destroy young love and promising futures?

"The Lost Heiress" swells with history, mystery and romance upon the turn of every page, leading its readers on a magnificent journey, not soon to be forgotten.

I received a copy of this book from the author. The opinions stated are entirely my own.

This was a beautifully written story about a young woman who was raised in Monaco by a Opera Singer and was thought to be the daughter born out of an affair, the Prince denied that she was her father, but the King accepted her and helped raise her into a beautiful woman. She mad made friends with a young Englishman when she was a child and the grew up together. She finds a box of letters that her mother told her would be important and then she passed, on one of the letters was a crest. She had her friend look into the crest and found out that she was actually a Baroness and that her real mother had died in a bad accident. She came home to England and met her father and cousins and other relatives. She goes through such an adjustment especially during this time she is only 18, getting to know her dad and they people were trying to hurt her for some diamonds that we given to her mother for safe keeping. She starts to fall in love with her childhood friend, who has enough demons of his own. The relationship between her father and her grows in leaps and bounds, but the is still, they find out why they were separated and it was interesting. I love this story and would recommend it for anyone who is looking for a good Christian Historical Book.

I think it was a wonderful novel! This is also the first book I've read by Roseanna White. I have found a new author to enjoy. I like Roseanna's writing style. She has written in a way that makes u want to connect to the characters. I really connected with Brook because in a way I'm much like her. I too was raised by someone else but unlike her I never found my real family. Brook is an awesome person! I think that if I'd have met my real family I would have felt just like Brook. But like Brook I would eventually have found my place as God had intended.
Justin I definitely would want to meet him if he were a real person! What a sweetheart to stand by and always want to protect Brook. They were made for each other.
I had a feel Pratt was up to no good when I first met him at the beginning of the story.
Roseanna described him perfectly! I definitely know that Satan got a hold of him and didn't let go.
Good always wins over evil. Jesus teaches that prayer is always important in our daily lives.
Brook kept her faith throughout this entire story and I loved her for it.
I admired Justin for sticking right by Brook through her entire ordeal right up until the end of the story.
I really liked Brooks father. He seemed like a real down to earth person like my father in law is. How he knew Brook was his real daughter I don't know but a father knows.
I would reread this book again. I just love happy endings! Please keep the stories coming Roseanna!

Such a delightful book! Lots of details and plenty of drama. If you love sweeping historical dramas, with past tragedy and murder and missing cursed gemstones....well, I can't say enough good about this tale. It absorbed me all the way from beginning to end. Now I am so eager for book two to be published, though I dread the wait for book three. Especially since we know that the last remaining conspirator is just waiting to strike again!

I loved Brook and I loved Justin and I loved Whitby. And the supporting characters, from Dierdre right down to Aunt Mary, who faints when she pleases...well, all of them are so well drawn that they seem very real. I kept thinking things were going to happen...like perhaps Whitby really wasn't her father, or perhaps she and Justin were going to quarrel, or perhaps she would come to grief on the powerful stallion Oscuro and not get to learn to drive, or that her cousins would hate her and conspire against her because of the inheritance, or that Pratt will do his best to ruin her...well, some of it happens and some doesn't, and you'll just have to read the book to find out! Which is exactly what you ought to do!

* 2019 re-read*
This book really helped me work through some emotions last year so it will always have a special place in my heart. I enjoyed this re-read and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

*2018 Review*
Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for romance
Best for Ages: 15 and up

Okay, I admit, I put off reading this book for one reason and one reason only – all the hype. The last book I read because of the hype (that was traditionally published) ended up being a major disappointment. I finally decided to read this book, and I have to say that it lived up to the hype.
White has a wonderful style of writing and a wonderful way of making her characters feel unique. I discovered that in Ring of Secrets. However, this book was even better. Everything about it just felt rich, beautiful, and perfect.

With the exception of one scene where I thought the kissing was a bit much, the romance was my favorite that I’ve read in a long time. While there are some of the typical issues that are found in a romance, (I can’t tell them this thing or that I love them), the characters actions and motivations were understandable. There were a couple of moments that I nearly cried, the pain felt so real.

I loved the beautiful settings and the rich historical backdrop of the story. The time was a mix of old horses and cars, of etiquette and throwing off of tradition, the old and new clashing and mixing. The different cultures represented in the story only made it richer.

The mystery that was part of the story was wonderful. It propelled the story forward, kept me guessing, and the conclusion was wonderful. I look forward to reading more in this series and by this author.

I highly recommend this book to those who like romance, historical fiction, and compelling characters.

A fine English novel with a hint of Russia (Anastasia).

Brook simply wants to know her heritage, whatever it might be and discovers she could be an heiress. Justin is her long time friend that helps Brook learn her true identity.

I enjoyed Justin and Brook's story. They are both likable and strong characters. I especially enjoyed Brook's independent spirit. While I admired Brook's strong character, I was a bit frustrated on how she could forgive one character beyond reason and have no forgiveness for a character more worthy. There was some mystery woven into the story and a bit of suspense.

Overall, it was a good read and I recommend it to fans of historical fiction.

Thanks to Bethany House for a copy of the novel. The views expressed are my own.

This story was such a pleasure to read!
I don’t even know how to write this review because there’s so much to say! I adore the setting; though the book starts in Monaco the rest of the plot takes place in the English countryside (a bucket list item for me!) and follows Brook through the twists and turns of her homecoming. The mystery was well paced and as the secrets began to be revealed, the more suspenseful the story got. By the time I got to the end of the book I was practically out of my chair!
Though the characters are many (thank goodness for the character list at the beginning of the book!) they all had a place in the story. I loved the upstairs/downstairs plot (which felt very reminiscent of Downton Abbey to me) and getting to see how the staff felt about Brook’s arrival to Whitby. Brook and Justin had a sweet relationship, though not without their share of angsty moments. Which personally, I love a bit of drama so I quite enjoyed those bits! The character growth they both experienced aided not only themselves, but their relationship with each other and I truly loved reading about them. And Lord Whitby… swoon. I’m very excited to read his story next!
I also really enjoyed the faith in this story and how it played a role at the end of the book. There was one moment that had me happy-gasping because of how perfectly it fit into the plot and into Brook’s character.

I had met Brook in other Roseanna White books, and it was fun to see her romance with Justin (I love how she used the French pronunciation of his name). I also really enjoyed her interaction with Deirdre, who had a nice character arc. I read this out of order, reading A Lady Unrivaled first, and I felt that parts of the climax sequence were very similar. Not bad, just familiar. Also, another serious creep of a bad guy, though perhaps slightly less so than in A Lady Unrivaled. The mystery got a bit complex at times, and I am extremely grateful that I don't live among the British peerage—all the different names and titles were difficult to keep straight. Not that I didn't enjoy the characters themselves, though. Brice Worthing was a hoot. The setting was really well done, as were the different characters' dialects. Loved all the historical details of cars and styles and such. All in all, this was an enjoyable read.

Oh my goodness. The Lost Heiress by Roseanna M. White is an incredible story that kept me engaged the entire time. I just read the last word. Love, loved, loved this book. Thank you Ms. White for following your dream through from when this story was first penned by you as a 12-year old. I don't know what the original book or what the many revisions were like but I certainly did enjoy the final version that was published.

From the moment I began reading "The Lost Heiress" till the moment I finished I didn't want to put the book down. Unfortunately work and sleep are also part of life.

Meet Brook Eden, a beautiful, young 18-year old girl with a lot of courage and spunk. A lost little girl who really didn't know where she belong, yet always knew there was so much more to her life.

Meet Justin Wildon, Brook's childhood friend and confidant. She loved him always, like a brother; or was there more than 'brotherly love there'? Time will tell.

So much intrigue and mystery in this story; and just when you think you have figured out the plot, Ms. White shows us no we have not. Will good win out over evil? When the light overcome the darkness? Will faith in God and the power of prayer be relevant?

I am not one to read and tell; but if you like the Downton Abbey era I truly believe you need to pick up this book for yourself and find out the mystery of Brook's life. How does Justin play a role in her life? What is the secret behind her mother's death and the death of Justin's father? How does Brook return to a family she was snatched away from? Who welcomes her home and who does not? What is the secret of the Fire Eyes? I am not going to be the one to spoil the surprises that lay ahead for those who choose to read this book.

Ms. White introduces the readers to the cast of characters in the beginning which I really appreciate because you can always look back when you get the who's who confused and what role they play in the story. It's a concept more author (and movie writers) should incorporate into their work.

Ms. White, I for one am looking forward to reading more of your work.

**This book was sent to me by the publisher, Bethany House, to preview read; for my honest opinion. I was not paid for this review.**

Pre Teens- One Star
New Teens- One Star
Early High School Teens- Two Stars (and a half)-ish
Older High School Teens- Four Stars-ish
My personal Rating- Four Stars-ish
Oh. I really should give “The Lost Heiress” a 3.5 star rating…but oh. I so enjoyed it. I really like Lost Princess stories (the Barbie movie was my favorite when I was little), so I had high hopes for this one. The outward appearance of the novel is quite beautiful, especially the spine and back cover. At first, I was overwhelmed with the Character List at the beginning, but by 50 pages in, I had who’s who. Some parts reminded me of “Echoes of Mercy” by Kim Vogel Sawyer , a favorite 4-star of mine. This one didn’t have the villian’s POV, though, which was nice. I really ought to give a bit of a lower rating due to the kisses & Pratt, but since it’s been so long since I really truly enjoyed a historical novel! And ohmygoodness, Brook has to be one of the best heroines I’ve read all year. “The Lost Heiress” was very well written, with humor (I laughed many times), drama, love & Faith.

Definitely five big stars for this dramatic, suspenseful, inspirational, historical romance. I'd love to see this made into a movie--or better yet, a TV series?

You take one young woman, the illegitimate daughter of the famous actress Collette Sabatini and supposedly Prince Louis Grimaldi--but then Brook finds out the actress and the prince are not even remotely related to her. The actress dies without telling Brook who her parents are, but not without giving her a pearl necklace and several letters written by someone to her real mother, a woman who died in a tragic accident when Brook was a baby.

And then you take one young nobleman, Justin, heir to a dukedom and her best friend, and you send him from Monaco to England with one of the letters. He's going to college, but he tells young Brook he will search for her relatives. He finds some answers, but many more questions.

Why did Brook's mother run away from her husband's estate in the middle of a dark, stormy night? Why did she beg Collette with her dying breath to take Brook far away and pretend the child was the actress's own? Why does Brook's father know nothing about the pearl necklace? What is there about that handsome gentleman that makes her heart go ice cold? Will her best friend become more than a friend? And why does she have the same nightmare every night?

The answers--most of them--can be found in this book. Plus one more question.

Available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Christian Book Distributors. Hurry.

I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

My sister recommended this book to me and I was not disappointed.
I loved the historical setting and all the things that were brought in from that. Like the cars. *grins* as I girl learning to drive, I could totally relate to Brook wanting to learn.
I didn't expect this to be that tense near the end, so that came as a bit of a surprise! But I still loved it.
There were only two things that put me off from the story (thus one star off) was the romance was a bit much sometimes. There were some pretty passionate kisses, and then there was the whole 'pushing the guy away for romantic tension' thing. =P And the second was a side character is shown to live an indecent lifestyle and while it was portrayed with taste, I wish there had been fewer references to it.

Overall, a really good book! I look forward to reading more by this author!

I would recommend it to age 15+ for the romance, mentions of affairs, and some violence.

>>2020 I love this book. <3 I appreciated the romance a lot more this time and the mystery. I really want to read the sequel now. =)

2021>> Still my favorite Roseanna White book. <3

2024>> Such a gem. <3

I have found a new favorite from Roseanna! This books has it all. Mystery, romance, intrigue, friendship, humor, danger...The Lost Heiress is a thick book but contains zero fluff. There was never a time where I wanted to skip over words to get to something more exciting. I enjoyed ever sentence. The story kept my attention from page one and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next.

I loved the relationship between Brook and Justin from the beginning. To watch it change wasn't always fun but at the same time, it was more real than some books. I don't like when the characters are unrealistic in how they react to things and just stop talking to each other after years of friendship. Even though things got crazy from time to time, they still cared about each other. They went the extra mile to tell the other person where they were wrong for their actions or behavior. There are people who say Christian fiction is full of the same story and it just seems unrealistic. I beg to differ with that opinion, especially with this author's books. It was interwoven with the character's faith. That didn't mean nothing bad ever happened because of their faith. That isn't real life. This story showed how despite hardships and everything not being sunshine and roses, you can still do the right thing and treat people the right way.

Brook's strong character was a pleasure to watch as she dealt with so many different personality types. She understood that not everyone likes you but you don't have to be unkind to them for it. I felt so badly for Justin as he struggled with the responsibilities he had to deal with and the losses while trying to be there for her at the same time. The secondary characters were just as powerful. I loved her father and her friend Brice. I can't wait for his story in book two.

There are some shockers in the story, too. I won't give them away, but just know they might surprise you just a bit. There are the "bad guys" and you can tell one of the biggest ones pretty early on. You just don't realize how bad one of them gets until later in the story.

I really loved this book. I hated for it to end. I can't wait for books two and three in the series. I know they will be just as wonderful. I would give them 10 stars, but since the top is 5, it is for sure that. It is a great story for teens and up. It has some great topics of discussion that you could talk with your teen about, or any book club. Grab your copy today!!!

Thanks to Bethany House & Netgalley for the ARC. This is this first book I have read by Roseanna White. It is a different style than I am used to, and while at first it felt a little overloaded with characters, so many to get to know & keep track of, in this case it added to the richness of the story, rather than distract from it.

I loved the locations of first Monaco, and then - mostly - Whitby, with a small part in London. The area surrounding Whitby is somewhere I am familiar with, and of course I especially loved the scene as Brook finally climbs the famous steps thru the village to the Abbey. Thank you for making that the location for a long awaited - if not a very over waited moment- in the story!!!

Brook is the lost daughter of the Earl of Whitby, and her homecoming and the subsequent relationship she develops with her Father, & the insight below stairs, is written well. I had a little struggle with trying to place this era, with carriages & horses, telegrams etc being used, but then electricity, cars & telephones.... It felt a little confusing, I think I would have preferred one or the other, but then I came to understand that it was the reality of life for those in the early 1900s, adjusting to the changes that it brought to life & society.

Before I read this book I saw one review that compared it to Downton Abbey. I can see where the connections may lie, but as a fan of DA, I couldn't make any similarities past the time era of this book and the first season, also for the fact that you get a glimpse of below stairs through the eyes of Deirdre. However, there is far more mystery, and danger running through this story which keeps you turning the pages, especially throughout the latter half of the story, as the pace changes a little. There were many things that frustrated me about Justin (Who goes from Lord Harlow to Lord Abingdon to Duke of Stafford) and his approach to his relationship with Brook - you sit there screaming "open your eyes man!!", but I liked the development of his character, and the inclusion of Lord Worthing, who actually at times has you routing for him!! I hope there's a story for him in the future? Overall a fabulous story, a good read, and some appreciated inspirational sections within the pages, that gave me pause to stop and think & appreciate that 'yes' this is how God loves us & watches over us. Thank you a great story & I look forward to reading more.

Author Roseanna M. White begins her "Ladies of the Manor" series with "The Lost Heiress", an Inspirational Historical Romance set in the early twentieth century. Although her childhood is spent in the royal palace of Monaco, Brook Eden bears a British birthright with uncertain origins. Raised by the royal family, the Grimaldis, Brook was once thought to be the illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis, heir to the throne, and opera diva Collette Sabatini. After that assumption proves false, mystery remains as to the truth of Brook's ancestry. Determined to find her real family, Brook seeks help from her lifelong friend, Justin Wildon, Lord Harlow. When Justin travels to England to further his education, Brook asks him to investigate her lineage, and he discovers that she is actually the Baroness of Berkley, and heiress to a sizable estate. Her real father, the Earl of Whitby, is alive and anxious to finally meet her. Travel to the estate of her newly-found family brings a few answers and even more questions. A tragic history may be repeating itself, and Brook will need the strength of her faith and the support of her dear friend Justin to help her courage remain steadfast. Justin has his own issues of inheritance to deal with, and as changing circumstances bring about new responsibilities, the relationship between Justin and Brook also changes. Has the friendship that began so long ago deepened into the love of a lifetime? Can the bond they share survive threats to their happiness and grow into a future filled with joy? "The Lost Heiress" is an involving, intriguing Inspirational Historical Romance from author Roseanna M. White.

I loved this book! In some reviews it is compared to Downton Abbey and you do have a little of that with the grandness of the house and the intricacies of the family and the behind the scenes thread of mystery and threat with the blackmailed maid.

I love Brook and Justin! Brook is a strong, confident, fun, loving, determined heroine and Justin is a loyal, loving, responsible, protective hero! Their relationship is built on a lifetime of friendship and while that actually gets in the way of their budding love, it also is the basis for a love that will last a lifetime.

There was so much depth to this book! There is the heartwarming story of a father and daughter re-uniting. It will tug at your heart-strings! Then there is the thread of mystery and intrigue running through the book that was very well done. The whole mystery of what happened to Brook's mother and why this danger is still alive for Brook was very interesting to me. The author does a great job of weaving this mystery into the story. And of course you have the romance blooming for Brook and Justin. They are perfect for each other but it takes time and danger to finally push them into that understanding.

I also really liked some of the supporting characters especially Lord Worthing. To the world he is somewhat known as a flirt but behind the scenes he is a strong, loyal, Godly friend. I'm really excited that the next book is about him! :D

Beautiful, Godly heroine? Check.
Handsome, Godly hero? Check.
Misguided but redeemable servant? Check.
Miscommunications and misunderstandings? Check.
Mystery and intrigue? Check.
Evil villain? Check.
Historical setting? Check.
All the elements for a lovely historical romance are in place. Rosanna White has created a wonderful world to visit. It was easy to lose myself in Brook's world and story. Other than a very few minor quibbles with character development, I was completely charmed by this story.

Thanks to Bethany House for the free copy given in exchange for my honest review.

If you love Downton Abbey, you'll likely love this book, placed in 1910, right at the beginning (well a little bit before) the first season of Downton. And unlike a few other Edwardian novels I've read and didn't like, The Lost Heiress really fit the era in every way possible. It sold me being an Edwardian novel.

Books like these are the sole reason why I continue wading through Christian fiction. Every once in a while I stumble across a true gem and The Lost Heiress is one of those rare stones, an amusing comparison considering the important role jewelry plays in this novel. I would have never found and so thoroughly enjoyed The Lost Heiress had I given up on Christian fiction, as I occasionally consider doing. This book has renewed my faith in the genre.

To be completely fair, I was first attracted by the cover. It's truly a lovely cover, n'est-ce pas? Pardon the use of French, but that is another tidbit that drew me, Brook's exotic upbringing and her diverse use of French and Monagesque (the language of Monaco, which is very like French apparently). The international flavor gave Brook a unique tone and really drew me deeper into the story, helping me emotionally invest in this young lady on the cover who's trying to find her place in her new family without compromising her own identity.

Brook delighted me. She is spunky without arrogance. Spirited without careless cruelty. She is a young woman who knows her own mind, her likes and dislikes, and not will compromise on the things that are truly important. But she is also a woman who respects the wishes and concerns of others and apologizes when she has made a mistake. She does not stand on false pride, but prays for forgiveness from her Heavenly Father and puts a change of behavior into effect. Exactly as a young, spirited Christian woman should.

As for Justin, he won me right from the start. I think it was his willingness to teach his Brooklet how to drive, albeit he suffered a little terror to, that made me like him. He taught her to use guns, to fence, to ride horses, to drive cars. He didn't like a little thing like her being a woman hold him or her back from developing Brook's strengths. He helped make her so individualistic, yet also awoke in her a love for God that he carefully nurtured. Justin, for all his faults in doubting Brook's romantic love for him, really brought out the best in Brook. I would have loved him just for that, but I could not resist loving him for himself as well.

Brook's maid, Deirdre, is one of those characters you either love or hate. I ended up empathizing with her plight quite strongly, and was relieved to see a positive change in her attitude. She really ended up being quite the little heroine and I loved her side story with Hiram. They were just too adorable for words. As for the villain, Pratt, lots of hating going on there. What a despicable man, quite convincing and very terrifying.

Faith plays a very large role in The Lost Heiress and while the cynic in me realizes the impossibility that everyone Brook met would be a Christian in reality, I still couldn't help liking the sincerity of faith. It didn't really preach, but was simply an aspect of her life and the lives of the other believers around her. Still, it was quite convenient for her long-lost father, her newfound friend Brice Mysterston, and her maid Deirdre to all make it a habit of praying to God and acting on faith. The convenience did amuse me a bit, but I liked Brice so very much that I didn't really mind, which is a good thing because the next book in the series, The Reluctant Duchess, is partially his story. Yay!

As historic Christian romance goes, the actual romance itself is fairly mild, a vast improvement over heroes and heroines who can't keep their minds off lustful thoughts (yes, you'll even find that in Christian fiction, a fact that troubles me). The romance felt natural, passionate of course, but also chaste, which makes it 5 stars for me.

For my own reading habits, I consider The Lost Heiress to be easily on par with such excellent novels as Prelude for a Lord, Burning Sky, and The Memoir of Johnny Devine, as well as the delicious Drew Farthering Mysteries by Julianna Deering. There is a bit of a similarity plotwise to Lisa Bergren's Grand Tour series (Grave Consequences and Glamorous Illusions), but for whatever reason I liked The Lost Heiress a bit better. Now it is time to start the 2nd book in the series, The Reluctant Duchess, which I recently received in the mail from Bethany House. I suspect I'll love it just as much as The Lost Heiress.

The Lost Heiress***** book 1 Ladies of the Manor series
by Roseanna M. White

Brook Eden grew up with royalty in 1910 Monaco not knowing who her parents were and has longed to know who she really is. Searching for answers, she has found who she is not. She entrusts her search for her family with her life-long friend Justin Wildon. When Justin returns with news that he has indeed found her family, Brook's life is about to change. She learns she is the daughter of the infamous Ambrose Eden, Earl of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England—making her Baroness of Berkeley. Her father accepts her with open arms, but the rest of the family and servants of Whitby Park are not as quick to accept her. However, when Brook's life is threatened they draw close—can they save her from the same tragedy as her mother?

Justin Wildon, Lord Harlow heir to Duke of Stafford, has longed to share his heart with Brook. But his responsibilities take him far from Brooke at a time she most needs him. Will he return in time to declare his heart before one of her suitors wins her heart? Can he save her from those out to hurt her?

There are dark forces at work against Brooke that put her life in grave danger. Who can she trust and why are they threatening her life? There is a mystery surrounding her mother's death and Brooke is determined to learn the truth....but at what cost to her and those she loves? Brooke and her maid are kidnapped and their lives are in grave danger. Who can her father and Justin trust in their frantic search for Brooke and her maid? Will they find them in time?

Roseanna M. White has woven a captivating story that had me staying up far into the night to read one more chapter. The details of the time period of this story are fascinating. I am glad there is a character list in the front of the book detailing Brook's and Justin's families and other characters in the story or I would have been more confused figuring out how the characters are related. The differences between the classes—upstairs verses downstairs—is clearly shown. I became suspicious of some of the characters and their true intentions. Some of the situations Brooke found herself in had me on the edge of my seat, even holding my breath. There are unexpected surprises that add much to the story. I like the way strong faith and prayer is interwoven throughout the story showing God's unconditional love and grace. This story has much to offer the reader: mystery, history, danger, unexpected surprises with twists and turns in the story-line, faith and love. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

"You are the image of your mother, my dear. But it seems your disposition you inherited from me, stubbornness and all. My apologies."

This story does have quite a lot of characters/titles for same characters, can be confusing at first you soon learn who everyone is and how they all know each other.

Brook Eden- The Heiress and long lost child of Earl of Whitby.
Justin Wildon- Brook's childhood friend and confidant. Duke of Stafford.
Lord Whitby- Brook's father and also know as Early of Whitby.
Deirdre O'Malley- Lady's maid to Brook.
Viscount Pratt- Brook's neighbor and distant cousin.
Earl Thate- Justin's best friend.
While that is not even close to half the characters those are the ones that I found most important throughout the story.

When Brook Eden finally finds out who she is due to Justin helping her. She is taken from Monaco where she was raised to England where her father and the rest of the family is. With having many imposters try to be her in the past the family and staff are slightly standoffish at first. But after seeing her the family knows that she really is the lost daughter of Lord Whitby.
From their she is thrown into a whirlwind of figuring out who she is, who her mother was, and how to form a relationship with her father. Along with this though she also realizes her real feelings for Justin who keeps pushing her away at every turn due to turmoil going on in his own life and learning to become a Duke. With the many ups and downs of their relationship you do get rather annoyed with both of them at times for not just sitting down and talking.
While her and Justin struggle with what they are or what they both want to be. There is a huge mystery going on that involves not only Brook and her parents but also Deidre and Pratt. The "Fire Eyes" as there known due to being the rarest ruby in the world cause more problems than any jewel ever should. While I'm not going to say anything more about this because I don't want to ruin the story.

"I don't want to see another imposter hurt the family. Strange as it seems to feel sorry for the masters, such wealth comes with to much deception."

Combining historical characters and a fictional cast, White brilliantly captures the emotions, fears, and faith of a nobody-turned-duchess. Life as the duchess, however, was not all a joyous reunion. Trouble soon finds Brooke--is it somehow linked to her mother's mysterious death?

I give 5+ stars for the brilliant writing of this book. In just the first chapter I was awed at the ease and flow of the words, the imagery captured. According to my preference, this was probably one of the best-written books I have read this year. I laughed and smiled throughout the whole book, fell in love with all of the different characters, and was enraptured with the plot. Okay...writer rant over.

White thoroughly succeeded in capturing my interest in every single character she followed--from those in royalty to the housemaid who acted as spy. I cared about them and wanted to know how their life turned out--if they would make the wise decisions I hoped for them. And I just have to say...Brice Worthing is by far my favorite!! I laughed at so many of his quotes and then admired his faith. I know, he was kind of a side character, but he was very creatively created.

The reason this book is a four-star for me is personal convictions/preferences. I didn't care for the romance portrayed, though it did not seem overbearing and unnatural, it was a little too much for me personally. Also, a lot was mentioned about men keeping "mistresses," forcing women, and the likes. White did not go into eye-opening details, but I would say it should be saved for 18-up.

A favorite quote:
"But God does not just instruct us to forgive--He instructs us to trust. To trust that, even though life hurts us, He will take care of us. That even if we lose the ones we love, He will sustain us through it."

Remember the not-actually-Disney-but-really-Don-Bluth animated movie Anastasia? The optimistic film in which a decade or so after the Russian Revolution, the missing princess is found? This book reminded me of that, crossed with the cursed jewel obsession of Victoria Holt's Gothic romance Pride of the Peacock. I enjoyed how the mystery begins rather simply and then accelerates as the story unfolds until it reaches a spectacular climax.

The only minor confusion was with all the noblemen and their myriad of names (given name, title, nickname, new title upon inheritance, etc). For that, I blame British society more than the author, since they're the ones who came up with the crazy system. But at least I was able to keep track of the important men. And Brook.

I appreciate that the romance is developed from close friendship, and it is believably rocky with all the transitions going on in their lives. But it is a good romance, blended beautifully into a rich, meaty story, with a fine balance of mystery, character development, and historic detail. Though at 435 pages it is a bit longer than the average novel, the length does justice to the tale. I'm looking forward to the next in the series! 5 out of 5 stars!

I just finished reading my ARC of The Lost Heiress and I can recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys historical romance. It is well written and well worth reading.

Although she has been raised by royalty in France, Brook, through her dear friend Justin, searches for her real family. Delightfully she finds that she is a Baroness and that her father is still alive in England.
Justin, who is an English Lord, helps her to reunite with her family. However, it turns out that there are tragic intrigues about why her mother ran away with her and was killed. Before she can be truly at home with her loving father these mysteries must be solved.

As for content: I rate it PG only because of the situations and the truly evilness of the villian. There is nothing of an overly sensual nature. I recommended it to my teenage daughter with no qualms.

Okay, I didn't think I would like this book as much as I did! The suspense, the mystery, and the romance was all there and I can't wait to read the sequel! The plot was on point with its who-dunn-it twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were well-developed and actually grew as the climax did, which is great because we all know no one is perfect and growth is a natural part of life if we want to have a happy and/or successful one. Relatability is key to a great story, in my opinion, in character, if not, in the plot and setting. The humor, faith-elements like trusting in God and His perfect will, and emotion in the story pulled on my heartstrings. Not to mention, I got a somewhat satisfactory ending. But hopefully my worries will be put to rest in the second novel. 😉

Happy Reading! 😁

I'm in love with this book! The Lost Heiress by Roseanna M. White was so good. Set during 1910 (think Downton Abbey), it's a intriguing tale of thrilling mystery and heartwarming romance. I adored it so much! With snatches of humor and moments of soul-stirring faith, it kept captured my attention and delighted my bookish heart! ^_^ Not to mention, the book itself (cover, etc.) are gorgeous!
I can hardly wait to read The Reluctant Duchess, Book Two in this series, LADIES OF THE MANOR!

The Lost Heiress is one of those books, that while it may not be a "fast" read (due to its size), it grips you nonetheless and has you flying through the pages at times. I loved it!

I have read and loved Roseanna's previous series, The Culper Ring, so I don't know why I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was...but I didn't and was pleasantly surprised that the story was so fantastic!

The characters were wonderful and I loved the romance. There were some anxious moments (especially near the end) that had me "on the edge of my seat", just waiting to see what would happen next.

All in all, I definitely recommend The Lost Heiress. It had romance, adventure, mystery, and great characters. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
