A collection of eight noir tales by Daniel Gallant, director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. These darkly comic stories follow a Shakespeare-spouting con artist, a smitten magician, a star-crossed swordsman, an enlightened Mafia interrogator and many other colorful rogues. The stories in this collection include: JALEO’S REBOUND, in which the daughter of a cartel boss recruits a poker pro for a dangerous game; ONLY ON THE WAY, in which the apprentice to an imprisoned stage magician dethrones a cult leader and rises to fame; DIMINISHED, THEN AUGMENTED, in which a psychology professor beats Mafia enforcers at their own game; INCITEMENT, in which two fencers duel over a sultry poetess; INCLINED TO STORM, in which a rivalry between two filmmakers who are also brothers turns deadly; and DETERMINED TO PROVE, in which an actor uses Shakespeare’s verse to grift a fortune.
Great read! Fast-paced, complex, a lot of bang for the buck. Short stories with a hard-boiled tone and an edgy voice. Some of the stories tie together and others stand alone, but the whole collection gels together really well. A bunch of impressive plot twists and some stand-out characters. Highly recommend.
This book is fun and crafty, with a wicked sense of humor. I don't normally read short stories, but these came recommended and I'm glad I followed through. The ones about gangsters were my favorites, the story with the fencers is sexy and there are a lot of interesting takes on gambling in this collection. All in all a nice surprise.
