Little Blackbird by Jennifer Moorman is not what I expected at all. It is a book about being different, accepting yourself for the way you are and accepting and appreciating the gifts you have been given, whatever they may be.
The year is 1954 in the town of Mystic Water. Kate Muir is 16 years old. She is half Indian which in itself makes her different from her peers. Her brother Evan never had a problem fitting in, but he is gone now. Kate first realized she had what she perceived as a curse when she was five years old. She would have visions or premonitions. As she got older, her mother explained what was happening to her. The visions would be little bits and pieces of things that haven‘t happened yet, most times difficult to string together. Her mother would give her lavender tea to help decrease the visions. But, the most important thing her mother impressed upon her was never, ever try to act on what she saw, never try to change the course of events that are destined to happen.
This summer, love is in the air. Kate helps a young man from one of the town’s wealthiest families that has been in a car accident. And they begin a summer romance. It is Kate’s first love. She also gets a taste of what it feels like to have friends for the first time. But she has been having visions and as she strings them together, she realizes what is going to happen. Should she reveal her true self to help protect her friend one horrible rainy night or keep quiet and let events play out and keep her secret hidden? Would her boyfriend accept her if he knew she had visions? Would her new friends go back to treating her as an outcast?
This book will evoke so many emotions. I felt such joy for Kate as she experienced the promise of love and and the joy of friendship for the first time. But also heartbreak at the choices she is forced to make. Its truly a lesson on accepting who and what we are and not changing to make someone else happy. And once you are able to do that, that’s when the true magic happens.

I read book three first as I didn't know it was a series. Read book one, then this one. I liked the background which answered some questions I had for book three, but little blackbird didn't draw me in as much. Being a teenaged outsider is always hard and adding the touch of magic made it even harder. Now off to book four.

A lovely short read from a magically talented author. The whimsical and magical setting alone draws you in to the enchanting story of Kate and how she transforms from living a sheltered life with her parents to coming out of her shell and discovering new friendships.

Little blackbird is based in the 1950’s and in a small town where being half Cherokee native and half Scottish-American made you different. People treat you differently and on top of that Kate has premonitions that she cannot tell anyone about. This novel is about a strong young woman who is starting to feel excepted in the world until her gift makes her choose between being normal or revealing her secret and stopping something bad from happening.
It’s a great quick novel for older teens that shows it is okay to be different and not to change to fit others standers. It can also be enjoyed by adults as well.
Most short novels don’t give you enough background or build up to really give you an in-depth story. This story does and gives you an ending that feels complete. Its definitely a good quick weekend read.

For every misfit who has ever wished he or she was not unusual, unique, outlandish, or just plain out there, this book is for you. Kate is a teen with a gift, or a curse. She can see bits and pieces of the future. Her mother, who others call a witch because of her skill with herbs, has told her that there is nothing she can do to change that future, so she loses her best friend and only brother to an accident. Kate yearns to look like the popular ones at school, to belong to a group of friends, to be accepted. She has the opportunity to do so when she assists one of the most popular boys in school after a car accident. For the first time, Kate is invited into the world she has only viewed from the outside, but she realizes almost too late that there is a cost to belonging she might not be willing to pay. Little Blackbird explores the emotions of being a teenager in a very visceral way that appeals to the senses and tugs at the heart of anyone who has been different and forced to choose between what makes one unique and the mentality of the herd.

Intensely emotional in a very real way! You feel all of the struggles of young Kate as she tries to find her way in life. She has more than her fair share of difficulties as she is also dealing with a part of herself that she feels she cannot share with others. Trying to be a "Normal" girl. What is normal, or rather what is normal for her?
A very warm sweet read with a few sharp edges that everyone deals with in life. Almost everyone can identify with Kate and what she goes through to discover her truth.

If you’re looking for a captivating read to draw you in, Jennifer Moorman’s Little Blackbird will do just that. Magic realism meets whimsy, hope and earthy magic in Mystic Water, where anything can happen, magic can be found in the most surprising of places and hope, friendship and love are grown in abundance. Little Blackbird intricately weaves a story of finding and accepting ones identity and learning to love oneself despite others opinions, interwoven alongside a backdrop of Juggling first loves, college/high school and the healing power of nature. If you enjoy finding magic in the everyday little things, then Mystic Water is the place you need to visit. You will be enveloped in friendship, happiness and laughter and will never want to leave. We could all use a little of extraordinary in our lives and Jennifer Moorman is a master of weaving magic into the every day.

I decided to head back to Mystic Waters this week. This time it was the story of Kate, a young woman who is “cursed” (as she says) with premonitions. Kate is also a high schooler worried about fitting in, making friends, and falling in love. And she falls hard for the popular Geoffrey Hamilton. But will her premonitions get in the way of just being a teen?
I enjoyed this trip back to Mystic Waters. The books was a quick read. And the characters reminded me of a Hallmark movie, or even a Nicolas Sparks novel. Seriously, I do think that Jennifer’s books could be great additions to the Hallmark movie repertoire. So if you are looking for a love story with wholesome characters, this is perfect.

What a wonderful book!
I have now read all three of Jennifer Moorman's books, set in idyllic, slightly mysterious Mystic Waters. They were all so good, very well written, words sometimes flowing in an almost mystical way. This was my favorite of the three. The reader can fall in love with Kate and her family, with the dynamics of their life and love, and even losses. There are also some funny moments, certainly never dull. I read all three books in 3 days, and my only problem is that I already miss Mystic Waters!

Kate Muir has a secret, like her family she has premonitions. And while her mother calls it a curse, Kate is trying to see if she can channel it as a gift.
A story full of hopes, first loves, friendships and magic!
This book made me cry, made me hope and made me smile and fall in love.
I love the character of Kate and this town.

It's official Jennifer Moorman is my new favorite author...her unique style of writing is so entertaining with such details as smells and feeling etc.!! She truly puts a most interesting twist to every story!!
As always, not only is the story unique, the characters are wonderful...extraordinary really! I absolutely love her amazing characters!
