A guide for Christian school leaders, Faithful and Flourishing helps readers launch, refine, sustain, or expand a Christ-centered school that conveys a clear and compelling Christian identity. The reader is guided through a series of questions that help leaders design schools thar are closely aligned to their mission, clearly articulate what differentiates them from other educational options, align all of their efforts and activities with their mission and Christian convictions, and serve students and families with Christ-centered excellence.
Very helpful overview and guide to the clarity and deliberate intentionality required to have and maintain "faithful and flourishing" Lutheran schools. Dr. Bull is gentle and gracious in his language, while actually saying things of challenging substance in a clear and forthright manner. I especially admire and appreciate his dogged focus and reliance on the centrality of the Word of God as the definitive and distinctive foundation and purpose of Lutheran education. He has an understanding that various schools will operate with a variety of different approaches, but he is consistent in highlighting the factors and features that will be necessary for any of them to prosper and succeed in faithfulness. Among those factors, I note in particular his comments on the role of chapel at the heart of a Lutheran school, the importance of prioritizing confession and mission over expedience and pragmatism, and the underlying search for truth, goodness, and beauty throughout the curricular pursuits and extracurricular customs of the entire school community on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. It is especially noteworthy and appreciated, the way Dr. Bull emphasizes the priority of the Church and the family, which our Lutheran schools exist to serve, support, and assist in the teaching of God's Word and faith to our sons and daughters, unto the Life everlasting.
This small book is an impactful read, highlighting the important questions that Christian and Lutheran schools need to ask themselves about who they are, what they believe, who their audiences are and more. With clear and insightful writing, Bull guides leaders and others through the tough yet needed examination of school culture, mission and vision, policies and other key issues. A must read for any Christian school administrator or teacher and also incredibly valuable for church leadership, school families and those who love Lutheran education.
