The truth is stranger than fan fiction in the next sexy paranormal rom-com from the beloved author of The Roommate.

The only place small-town outcast Alex Lawson fits in is the online fan forum she built for Arcane, a long-running werewolf detective show. Her dedication to archiving fictional supernatural lore made her Internet-famous, even if she harbors a secret disdain for the show’s star, Devin Ashwood. (Never meet your heroes—sometimes they turn out to be The Worst.)

Ever since his show went off the air, Devin and his career have spiraled, but waking up naked in the woods outside his LA home with no memory of the night before is a new low. It must have been a coincidence that the once-in-a-century Wolf Blood Moon crested last night. The claws, fangs, and howling are a little more difficult to explain away. Desperate for answers, Devin finds Alex—the closest thing to an expert that exists. If only he could convince her to stop hating his guts long enough to help....

Once he makes her an offer she can’t refuse, these reluctant allies lower their guards trying to wrangle his inner beast. Unfortunately, getting up close and personal quickly comes back to bite them.

A walking green flag finds out he’s a werewolf and enlists the help of a former (current) die-hard fan (nerd) of his successful television show (absolutely not based on any real-life paranormal-themed series from the early aughts). He was inadvertently rude as hell to her seventeen years before so she’s really, really annoyed that he’s so sweet and his lips are so pink and firm and he helped her dad clean out the gutters aw damn girl you’re cooked. I would call Devin a himbo but what if that hurts his feelings? This was supposed to be a ridiculous romcom but that doesn’t mean I didn’t cry like a distressed toddler at points (I acknowledge this was a disproportionate reaction but we are in highly emotional times). I normally fully embrace people liking what they like and disliking what they don’t, but if you hate this book I will fight you. Not verbally. I’ll fight you with my hands. Four billion stars.

What to Expect:
➼ Reluctant Allies-to-Lovers
➼ TV Werewolf turns Real Werewolf
➼ Former Fangirl Holding a Grudge
➼ Slow Burn
➼ Forced Proximity
➼ He Can Scent Her Emotions
➼ His Wolf Loves her Scent
➼ Age Gap
➼ Small Town
➼ 3rd Act Break Up
➼ Fandom/Fanfic Culture
➼ Dual Narration
➼ Third Person POV

This was such a fun concept and I was pleasantly surprised by the execution. Devin, the MMC is a washed up actor famous for playing a TV werewolf while in his prime who suddenly finds himself transforming into a real werewolf. The “why” behind the MMC spontaneously turning into a werewolf at 42 was never fully fleshed out, but the tone of the book was unserious enough that I was okay to just run with it. I don’t mind age gap, but I didn’t feel like he read like a 42 year old. If I could change one thing, it would be for him to be like 35 instead at least.

I thought it was interesting that he assumed the shows portrayal of werewolves would be accurate, but I guess it would be as good a place to start as any. He seeks out Alex because she’s the closest thing to a werewolf expert he can think of as the creator and moderator of the show’s fan forum. Little does he know, that they have met before and she has been harboring a long standing grudge against him based on their previous interaction.

Alex reluctantly agrees to help him and they embark on a mission to learn his triggers and how to manage them with some truly ridiculous trials. The trials did allow for lots of spicy and intimate moments but I did roll my eyes at a few of them. I actually thought the spice was very well written in this book and there were a lot of lines that I know readers will love! It’s never stated that they’re mates, but his wolf was absolutely obsessed with her scent and that took the plot in some interesting directions as well.

There was some miscommunication and a short 3rd act break up near the end, but they were quick to turn things around and make things right. They both have some insecurities that they let get in the way for a bit, but this is a couple I’m rooting for! I wasn’t sure how the author would work out their HEA… there were some scenarios I really wouldn’t have been happy with, but what she wrote for them was perfect!

There is a lot of talk about fan fiction and internet besties, so if you’re one of those girls who grew up on AO3 long before I even knew it existed, or for any teen wolf girlies, this book is for you! I fangirled hard for Tom Welling from Smallville as a teen, so I can at least relate in that regard. The way I would have absolutely flipped if he showed up and needed my help. 🫠

Such a fun read! 🐺🌕

listen, idk what the author put into this book.. but i don’t think I’ve ever been so entertained in my life! the promise follows Alex and Devin: Alex has an online forum for this werewolf detective show called The Arcane Files, and Devin is the actor who plays the lead role on that show. Alex is one of his biggest fans but after meeting him a couple years ago where things didn’t go as planned, she’s got a different opinion of him now. so when Devin starts to turn into a werewolf in his real life, he has to try and rope Alex into helping him figure out what’s going on and how to control his wolf side before it’s too late and things get out of hand.

“Devin felt like he could tear the world in half for her, right now, if it would have made a difference.”

i have conflicting feelings on this but overall, i did enjoy it for the most part. the main issue is that Devin got on my last nerve and i wouldn’t even say i like him per-se, he doesn’t act his age and thinks such obnoxious thoughts about Alex 24/7.. it was not romantic in the slightest. Alex, on the other hand? I LOVE HER YOUR HONOR!! she’s got that standoffish demeanor on the outside, but this girl has the biggest heart and doesn’t let anyone walk all over her. i just wish Devin would have toned it down cause for every cute moment, he’d say something afterwards that made me want to smack him all over again. my favorite thing about this was the fact that they used Devin’s character from the show as a blueprint for the “trials” and what to do with his current situation, something about that was just so fun. this is a love letter to fandom culture and it’s not perfect.. but still worth the read if you don’t take it too seriously!

many thanks to NetGalley, the author and Berkley Publishing group for the arc, all opinions are my own.

the entire premise of this book sounded really fun even though werewolf books aren’t necessarily my favorite thing to dive into (i am trying to change that though lol), i thought this was going to be really chaotic, silly and as a fan fiction, die hard for my fandom i love girlie i was super excited to get this one.

unfortunately i really struggled with this book and i think the biggest issue for me was the MMCs age and maturity level, i in no world could believe devin is a 42 year old man, if he was 25/26 MAYBE he would have been a little bit more likeable? i found him to kind of just be a major jerk. he was awful to Alex, he made all kinds of comments that are just unreal to me being a grown man who has once been married…

surprisingly the only thing i really had fun with was the werewolf aspect, the. tests were fun, i liked when devin’s wolf took control because he was actually likeable and fun in these moments.

alex is super bad ass and a wonderful person bc if i were her there would be no way in hell i could ever forgive devin and personally think that his reasoning for what happened was weak. i couldn’t imagine on my worst day saying something like that about anyone no matter the situation, alex really should have made him grovel for that one and for whatever reason didnt.

i really loved the roommate by rosie danan and absolutely plan to give “do your worst” a shot but unfortunately this one just didnt work for me. i may possibly try it again in audio form and see if narrators bringing the MCs to life works out better!

ali hazelwood and lana ferguson’s love child confirmed

this sounded like it could’ve gone one of two ways and it was sadly a disappointment. 1) there was no knotting…EXCUSE ME 2) the mmc is an absolute rat. like he is horrible to her and in his pov it’s explained how it’s all miscommunicated but he never explains out loud??? so she just accepts his very now and then dickish behavior??? no way josé my heart broke for her on more than one occasion and how in the world is THAT romantic 🤨

This had such a fun premise and I really thought I’d love it, but it just didn’t click for me. The whole “fan girl teaming up with a washed up actor turned werewolf” setup had potential but the MMC gave me the ick. He’s way too old to be acting like a frat boy who pregamed with Four Lokos. The romance didn’t pull me in the way I hoped, and I found myself losing interest at parts. It wasn’t terrible by any means, I can see why other readers might enjoy the mix of humor, fandom, and paranormal but for me, it was just okay. Next time, maybe let the wolf out and keep the man at home. 🐺

Despite living in the same small town for 20 years, Alex has come to terms with forever being the loner girl and has made a home for herself with her dad. Content to spend her free time chatting with her old fandom friends and hiking with her teenage mentee, Alex is taken aback when she gets a message on the retired forum for her favorite show following a werewolf detective. When she decides to meet up with the stranger, Alex is even more shocked to find the person is none other than Devin Ashwood, the show's former lead star, and he is claiming that he may be more like his character than they thought humanly possible.

This was a very fun and refreshing story! I loved the plot and how Alex and Devin had to work together to figure out what was happening to him. The two were very real and raw together, and I liked that they always reassured one another in their feelings and never strayed from the hard stuff. It was so sweet to watch their relationship blossom as they got to know each other and opened up. While Devin drove me crazy sometimes, I appreciated that he knew when to be transparent and honest with Alex while still finding his bearings as his life changed. Not to mention, I loved the trials and how the TV storyline played out with their unfolding romance. Overall, this was such a sweet and quirky slow-burn romance with just the right amount of humor, steam, and nostalgia!

~Many thanks to Berkley for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

"To be clear, I'm in love with you too." Even though Alex said it first, saying it back still felt like jumping off the edge of a cliff.
She snapped her head up. "You do?"
He nodded solemnly. "Devin Ashwood is in love with you."
Alex scowled. "You are not as cute as you think you are."

What an absolute delight this book was.

This was cute, funny, heartfelt, spicy, everything. Devin had his character flaws, but his POV was so entertaining. So full of himself but an honest to god golden retriever, and the mix of a contemporary romance and throwing in the werewolf aspect was 🤌

Absolutely recommend for romance readers who also like a spoonful of fantasy 💙

My Thoughts:

I was a fan of Do Your Worst, so I was excited about this one. But unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy this book.

I liked the FMC, Alex. She's smart and a bit prickly and rough around the edges, but at her core, she cared deeply for the ones she loves. I liked her relationship with her father as well as her involvement in the queer youth mentorship program at the community center. It broke my heart that her unique style and 'differences' led to the town treating her like an outcast. Alex deserved the world and someone who loved and adored every little piece of her. And while the MMC, Devin, supposedly does in the end, it seemed like he loved her in spite of her 'weirdness', and it rubbed me the wrong way.

One of my least favorite dynamics in a romance is when the MMC says the FMC is not his type. And Devin says this word for word about Alex. Listen, I don't need insta-lust but I also want there to be some sort of attraction. The only time this is acceptable is if it's a monster or alien romance because they're different species and it takes time for them to get used to each other's physical differences.

Devin is a 42-year-old washed up TV actor with the emotional maturity of a teaspoon. It honestly felt like I was reading about a boy in his early 20s, not a grown ass man. And the shit he says really aged him, and not in a sexy fine wine type of way. Only a middle aged man would refer to pay-per-view porn (because hello, Porn Hub). He also used words like homeboy, chub, tough nuts, weirdo. And some of the actual sentences he said or were written from his POV:

"What kind of conditioner do you use?" If it was nontoxic, he could buy some and use it as lube.

He took a big slutty inhale and then had to stop so he didn't go half-chub within ten feet of a bunch of grandmas.

Erica (his ex-wife) mostly avoided him while surfing the crimson wave.
I cannot.

Also, he's a HUGE jerk and so rude to Alex. His comments about her are rarely positive, and when they are, it’s like he’s only interested in spite of her old clothes, gothic vibes, and 'weirdo' behavior. It's condescending and makes him seem like he’s tolerating her rather than genuinely appreciating her.

I really didn’t feel like Alex and Devin had chemistry. She was clearly attracted to him, but his eventual attraction seemed forced and only happened because his wolf was drawn to her scent. Honestly, if it weren’t for that connection, I don’t think these two would have ended up together, even if they’d met under different circumstances.

There were some good spicy moments (the cabin scene in particular, but there's one scene that, while hot, gave me mixed feelings. There was a chase that definitely piqued my interest and the smut was great! But the logistics . . . they bang in a forest. But not just any forest - a central Florida forest. Do you know the kinds of disgusting bugs and snakes that would be around them?? It's also hot and humid AF. Definitely would not be a pleasant experience at all.

Fandom and fanfic have played a huge role in Alex’s life, and that world is essentially the foundation of this story. If you’re not familiar with it, though, it might be a bit confusing. I’ve been part of fandoms and read fanfics throughout the years, and I honestly believe that unless you’ve experienced it firsthand, it’s tough to fully understand the unique language and dynamics of these communities. While this book will likely resonate deeply with those who are deeply involved in fandom, it might not fully connect with someone unfamiliar with the nuances and subtleties of fanfic culture.

While there was quite a bit that didn't work for me, I did enjoy the trials, when Devin claps back at Pete Calabasas, and when Devin's wolf would come forward because he was playful and actually into Alex.

Thank you NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review! As always, all opinions are my own.

Fan Service is a light Paranormal Contemporary Romance novel from Rosie Danan. I really enjoyed Danan's last novel, Do Your Worst, so was excited to check this one out.

In this story, we're following Alex Lawson and Devin Ashwood through alternating perspectives.

Devin is an actor who starred in a CW-style werewolf television series, The Arcane Files. Alex is the girl who created and moderated the largest fan forum for the show.

We find out early on that the two actually met at a Con years before the start of our novel. Unfortunately, for Alex, the old adage 'never meet your heroes' turned out to be true. She overheard Devin making nasty comments about her and the costume she made; crushing for a teen.

Even years later, even as she's internet famous for knowing everything there is to know about TAF, Alex holds a secret-disdain for its most famous star, Devin freaking-Ashwood.

Ever since the show went off the air, Devin has found his life in a steadily downward spiral. The morning he wakes up naked in the woods with the no memory of the night before though, that may be rock bottom.

The recollections he does have, not to mention the witness reports, are disturbing. Like claws, fangs and howling. Certainly, the full moon was a coincidence, but maybe it's not. Is Devin literally turning into a werewolf?

Desperate for answers, Devin seeks out the one person who seems to know all there is to know about werewolves, at least the ones portrayed in The Arcane Files, the moderator of the popular fan forum.

Thus, Alex and Devin's paths cross again. This time they're on more equal ground though, and in fact, Alex may have the advantage. Devin doesn't remember her, and she can play this any way she wants.

Ultimately, Devin pleading for help, makes Alex an offer she can't refuse and the two begin working together to figure this thing out. Before you know it, walls are coming down and an animal attraction is growing strong.

Fan Service is a great read. I enjoyed a lot of aspects of the story. It's an understandable romance, with a ton of solid character work, but it was a little too drawn out for my tastes, I have to admit.

While I enjoyed learning about both of our main characters, I feel like I almost learned too much about them. Hahaha, is that even a thing?

IDK, but it is the feeling I walked away with.

I'm not sure what specifically I would have cut out of it, but yeahhh, I just feel like all the details started to weigh the story down a bit. It sucked some of the fun out of it for me.

Nevertheless, it had a lot of positives, not least of which was the lovely conclusion. I also thought the steamy bits were great; definitely my kind of kink, and I appreciated the work the author put into Alex and Devin.

Trust, they were FULLY developed.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should round this rating up -- LOL. Don't be surprised if you see that little tick up at some point in the future.

I did love the banter between the two and Devin's thoughts, in particular, cracked me up. It was definitely a slower build, but also still full of enjoyable content.

I would definitely recommend this one to Readers who enjoy some steam and werewolves. Also, solid fandom vibes for those, like myself, who love that type of thing in a story.

Thank you to the publisher, Berkley, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I'm definitely excited to keep picking up more from this author!

This was SO funny. It was truly a love letter to fandom culture. So many times throughout this book I saw my exact experiences mirrored on page. I could tell that this was written by someone who had spent their lives within fandom!! Some experiences shown in this book are simply too niche for the average person to know.
I loved the characters, especially the FMC. She was so relatable to me, I loved how she was shown to be grumpy, "ice cold," and the way she shut people out when she was feeling vulnerable. I loved that she was alternative (more alternative fmcs in romance please!!!!) and she was a softie who cares at the core. Me core!!!!

Admittedly, the MMC did frustrate me at times because the way he spoke to her sometimes was just not okay- even though you could tell through his internal monologues that he had good intentions. He was cocky and small-minded at the beginning of the book, which makes sense given his childhood. That being said, I loved reading his character development. I loved watching his mindset expand and seeing him learn to care about others in a new way.
I admit I would have appreciated more communication- he never expands on his internal monologues or explains why he said what he said after saying something unintentionally jerkish.

Also I saw someone pointing out the ages should have been changed and I agree. The age gap didn’t bother me personally but the characters definitely did not act their age, especially Devin. I think they each could have been a few years younger without it changing the plot. I don’t think you even need to change the age gap. Instead of the FMC being 32 and the mmc being 40 something I think the fmc should have been late 20s and the mmc mid 30s.

The romance worked for me!! I loved them together. They were so funny and their personalities meshed well.
The plot was hilarious and so perfectly ridiculous. It really captured that campy early 2000s CW show feel.
Overall I really loved this and definitely recommend it!!
I will 100% be reading more by this author!

I received a free digital copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own!

I really tried to like this book, but I could tell almost immediately that this one wouldn’t be for me. I looked at a lot of the reviews and everyone seemed to really enjoy it so I tried persevering, but I couldn’t. The MMC grossed me out the entire time I was reading his parts, to the point I was physically cringing. Also finding out that he was 42 but acted like a 20 something just weirded me out too. I did really enjoy the FMC a lot though, but it just wasn’t enough to keep me in the story.

Have you ever wondered if the guy playing your favourite werewolf character on TV, was also a werewolf in real life? If yes, you're in luck, because Rosie Danan decided to tackle that question in Fan Service, with some interesting results.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Do Your Worst, and I debated for a while if I should even pick this up, but I'm glad I did, because it was entertaining, and a lot better than Danan's other book.

My main complaint there was that it wasn't paranormal enough, and Fan Service delivered on that front, with an actual werewolf transformation, woo!! The bar is low y'all, the bar is low. I'm just happy that it's an improvement.

I listened to the audiobook, and I was convinced his name was Devin Ashton, like the Sims 3 premade actor sim, which I thought was really cute, until I fished the book, checked the other reviews, and saw his last name was Ashwood not Ashton...boooooo, tomato tomato. I don't know why I heard wrong, I really don't.

Anyway, I liked the premise, the execution was so-so, the romance was okay, though Devin could act really immature at times. I didn't always like the little comments he had about Alex's appearance, it was as if he was picking things apart and trying to make sense of why he was attracted to her, kinda weird.

And maybe I'm sensitive because I'm also alternative, but he kept saying over and over that she wasn't his type, that she was weird and he liked her despite of that, instead of saying he liked her period.

Alex meanwhile, wasn't very developed as a character (Devin wasn't either though, don't worry), I couldn't tell you five things she liked outside of Devin and the show she was obsessed with. She was kind of a doormat too, but I do get her, your celebrity crush basically falling into your lap (and falling in love with you) isn't something that happens every day.

Also, there was no explanation why Devin suddenly started wolfing out, we as readers are just supposed to go with it.

I'd like to think that Danan is slowly finding her footing in the paranormal romance genre, and her future books will make more sense, and have better worldbuilding. Fingers crossed.

4.5⭐️ rounded up. This had me kicking my feet and physically cackling, I had such a good time!!!

Fan Service is a contemporary romance (heavy on the contemporary given all of the mainstream media references) with a splash of paranormal elements. It is an homage to the fanfic girlies who stayed up until 3am in their teenage years searching tags on Ao3 for the perfect fic.
This book is perfect for those who don’t like to dive too deep in the realm of paranormal but want to take a chance at seeing it tie in to a real life premise. That was exactly what I was hoping for in this one and it exceeded my expectations.

We meet Alex and Devin, in their mid-30s and early 40s, respectively which was refreshing to given the majority of the contemporary romance genre tending toward main characters in their 20s. However, I did feel at times that the characters didn’t always read as their age.

Devin was giving golden retriever energy (figuratively and literally) and I ate it up! I loved how we got to explore his journey of reclaiming his sense of purpose and life outside of his entire value being wrapped up in being a one time wonder celebrity. Oftentimes authors fail to focus enough on developing their MMCs and I thought Rosie Danan did a fantastic job making Devin feal earnest, albeit flawed. We got to know who he was through childhood, as he made his way through becoming an overnight sensation, and when everything fell apart for him and he had to pick up the pieces of his life. His character arc was super well rounded and played in very well to the paranormal elements.

The author also did such a fantastic job of exploring fan communities, highlighting their influence on storytelling and the industry. Honestly, where would some of the biggest books, shows, movies etc be if it wasn't for the fans?
Also - the subtle inclusion of real life issues (shout out to the book banning commentary) was A++++!!!!!

The dialogue in this novel was my absolute favorite part of this read. It is very hard to get me to genuinely laugh out loud while reading because jokes can sometimes come across as forceful or cliche, but when I tell. you. I. could. not. stop. laughing. I was sick while reading this book and picking it up brought me so, so much joy.

And can we just talk about the tension and angst of this romance!!!! Rosie is a master of utilizing well known tropes to her advantage and giving them their perfect unique twist. I loved the "trials" ideas that lead to steamy only one bed and chasing scenes. I was addicted once I was pulled into their connections.

The only reason I feel this cant get a full five stars from me is because the ending felt jarring and out of character for both Devin and Alex. There was something missing about the resolution that made me think, will these character's relationship actually survive?

Ultimately, if you need a good laugh and an escape from your day to day stress this one is the perfect antidote. 🫶

Favorite quotes:

”Relying on critiques of the show felt safe, familiar. Artists, at least in theory, knew art once shared belonged to the audience to interpret and interrogate.”

“That was the trouble with fandom. Spend enough time thinking about a fictional character and you started to believe that your version of them was real. That they belonged to you in some small, private way.”

“I don’t know if it was the moon or fate or the universe that made me a werewolf, but, baby, you made me human.”

alex is a former fan girl from a werewolf tv show fandom. devin is the former actor from the show who unknowingly insulted alex several years ago. when devin thinks he’s actually turning into a werewolf, he stumbles on alex’s fandom website and begs for her help. and the two of them try to figure out if he’s actuallyyyyyy transforming into a werewolf.

black cat x golden retriever is one of my fav set ups. alex is a a grumpy, tattooed social pariah in a small town in florida and when devin lands there for her help, she’s in shock. the two of them try to stay professional but devin’s inner wolf is OBSESSED with her. to the point he ends up in her house and striking a friendship with her dad.

this book was so much fun. it made me laugh out loud several times, and the slow burn reluctant friends to lovers had me so giddy. devin was so down bad for her. the chasing in the woods scene lives in my head rent freeeeee.

this book is very unserious and so much fun!

🎧 aaron shedlock and brittany pressley read for alex and devin. they did such a great job with the narration. they captured their personalities so well and I really enjoyed reading it with my ears!

Second read. 4.5 stars. The third act is brutal but short. I love this book so much but I did want more. An epilogue with them farther in the future would've been awesome. I loved it but it probably won't be one I read a third time.

First read. That was beautiful and sweet and, surprisingly, deep.

I received this as an advanced reader copy and I will probably re-read it whenever the audiobook comes out because I loved it so, so, so much.

Devin is a bit of a self-focused guy who was pushed into Hollywood as a child and never found a way to having a life outside of it. In a weird twist of fate, his real life is about to mirror his character's life when he experiences some weird changes. He ends up finding the moderator of his fan wiki page who happens to be someone who had a crush on him when she was a kid. They are now 34 (her) and 42 (him) when they meet again as adults when he works to convince her to help him out.

This is a contemporary rom-com with a slight dash of the paranormal that helps the two characters work through their issues and come together in such a beautiful way. The way this man is ravenous for her and how he schemes to woo her? 🥰

I cannot even begin to tell you how beautifully written this book is as it shows them peeling back their emotional layers and learning to trust each other. There was definitely some real tears being shed in the later part of this book.

Basically, I highly recommend and I loved it so much.

Safety deets
- On page spice. He's great at making sure she 💦 first.
- Beautiful consent. They discuss what each is comfortable and have a really good conversation that continues in a sexy and comforting way in all their physical intimacy.
- He's been married and divorced. There are some signs that he has slept around, but we don't hear about any details.
- She's slept with various folks and we do meet one of her ex-lovers. Other than Devin getting VERY jealous/possessive, there's no drama there.
- They are unequivocally together at the end. No wedding or long-term epilogue, but I still thought the peek we got several months into the future was super cute.
- Birth control discussed and condoms used.

🛡️ Audiobook Review: Fan Service by Rosie Danan

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Narrators: Brittney Presley and Aaron Shedlock

🦸🏼‍♀️ Heroine Spotlight: Alex Lawson

Once branded a pariah, Alex Lawson grew up under the shadow of her father’s controversial conservation work—reintroducing red wolves into Florida’s Ocala National Forest. The local backlash was swift, and Alex bore the brunt of it, especially after her mother abandoned them for New York.

But the night her mother left, Alex found solace in the supernatural detective series The Arcane Files. The show—and its brooding werewolf lead, Colby—became her lifeline. Hidden behind a screen name, Alex rose to fandom royalty as “The Mod,” curating “The Archive,” a meticulous catalog of every detail from the show. No one knew the mastermind was a teenage girl nursing heartbreak and isolation.

Her one brush with Devin Ashwood, the actor behind Colby, shattered her illusions. She’d idolized him—until she overheard him mocking her after their convention meet. That moment marked the beginning of the end of her crush on Devin. When The Arcane Files wrapped in 2018, so did Alex’s reign as The Mod.

🦸🏻‍♂️ Hero Spotlight: Devin Ashwood

Devin Ashwood, former child star and soap opera alum (Sands of Time), never quite escaped the stigma of being a pretty face with limited range. Even after The Arcane Files ran for thirteen seasons, Hollywood still saw him as disposable. At 42, his career was in freefall—his agent ghosting him, his publicist throwing him party lifelines.

At one such party, a drunken Devin pitched a reboot idea and got laughed off the patio. Humiliated, he stumbled into the woods with a bottle and woke up battered, confused, and changed. Something had happened. Something… not human.

📃 Plot Pulse

Alex now works as a vet tech, juggling bills and caregiving for her father post-heart attack. Her online friends from the fandom days still keep in touch—and they’re the first to alert her when a viral video surfaces: Devin Ashwood, mid-transformation, caught on camera.

Was it a stunt? A breakdown? Devin doesn’t remember. He’s been blacking out, hypersensitive to light and sound, and his doctor chalks it up to anxiety. But Devin suspects something darker. Desperate, he turns to the one person who might understand—the anonymous archivist who knew The Arcane Files better than anyone.

Alex.

Together, they dive into the lore, testing Devin’s limits and unraveling the mystery of what he’s becoming. Is it all in his head—or is the fiction they once loved bleeding into reality?

💘 What Hit Home

• This story is a breath of fresh air in the romance genre—original, unpredictable, and emotionally layered.
• I loved how both protagonists were skeptics of the supernatural… until it knocked on their door.
• Watching Alex guide Devin through trials to master his abilities was both thrilling and tender—a dynamic built on trust, tension, and reluctant hope.

🧐 What Fell Flat

• The narrative leans heavily on the idea that Devin is “too old” for Hollywood, which feels outdated. Actors like Keanu Reeves, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise are thriving well past 40. Devin’s age shouldn’t be a career death sentence—it’s prime time for reinvention. Even television actors like Pedro Pascal, Noah Wyle and Shawn Hatosy are taking Hollywood by storm lately.

🎧 Narration Notes

Aaron Shedlock and Brittney Presley deliver a stellar dual performance. Aaron’s gravelly voice oozes charisma and vulnerability, while Brittney’s soft, expressive delivery brings emotional depth and clarity. Her character work is especially strong—distinct, emotive, and immersive.

📝 Final Takeaway

A genre-bending romance with supernatural flair, nostalgic fandom vibes, and two flawed leads learning to rewrite their stories. If you’re craving something fresh, heartfelt, and just a little wild—this one’s worth the listen.

This. Was. Everything.

The moment I read the description, I knew I had to have this book. I absolutely love werewolves and shifter romances in general. Something happened in my childhood (god knows what) that inexorably linked shifters with my sex drive so now it's a kink of mine. Cool!

Unfortunately, a lot of the werewolf romances out there are ABO (alpha, beta, omega for the uninitiated) and tend to be set in a world of pre-existing werewolf lore. While those romances are okay to read, I really like werewolves in the real world where the exploration of the lore is filled with more mystery and humor vs. the dark fantasy angst that ABO books tend to have. I also like more cozy camp and warm intimacy which Rosie Danan did perfectly in Fan Service.

She also did such an amazing job catering to the massive group of slightly bizarre writers and readers who create fandoms and fanfic. This book was such a clear love letter to all of us and the worlds we create and it warmed my heart to read.

Finally, holy heckin hell, Rosie Danan dialed the kinky up to 11. Degradation, submission, BDSM, a dash of masochism... my lustful heart was SCREAMING.

Much like a novelty ice cream, this book wasn't perfect. It could have used a few touch ups here and there, but that couldn't matter less to me. The joy it filled me with was worth every word.

_______________

Edit - WAIT A GODDAMN SECOND. It just occured to me that I could've (and should've) been imaging Devin as Jared Padalecki this whole time. Missed opportunity. I'll do it when the audiobook comes out

_______________

side thoughts (not main review) - i do think that devin should've been younger. not only was the age gap a little.... odd, he also didn't act 42 at all nor did alex act 34. They should've both been in their late 20s imo.

_______________

IT'S MINEEEE

i swear to god if i am not able to get my hands on an arc i might actually die. i cannot wait until march

has an ex wife who left him (literally one of my biggest pet peeves if you’re gonna do this at least write it where he ends it makes it slightly more tolerable & i really didn’t need to know that they used nipple clamps on each other or anything else about their life), also uses “woke” and “rizz” unironically and is just all around an unlikable dick

meanwhile we barely got any info about the fmc and her sexual life besides a meaningless hookup god knows how long ago, pretty sure she didn’t have a single serious relationship. love that

i love them so much 😭

thank you berkley for the arc!!! 🐺💜

4 howling stars!!! i love rosie danan and this was soooo good. so much of a slower burn than id anticipated but oof the wait was worth it!!

the level in which i related to alex was ✨unhealthy✨ but i absolutely adored her character!!!! black cat gal through and through. i loved how devin saw right through her tough girl act (we might have tattoos and scowl a lot but i promise we're big babies!!)

devin, our paw daddy!!! who knew id want a 42 year old to ram into my asshole so badly!!! he was lowk kinda mean tho but i'm into it!! smack me around daddy😍 no seriously though he was kinda an airhead sometimes and just didn't understand why what he said hurt alex or whatever and idk it was kinda embarrassing for him at his grown age to be acting like such a douche but 💀 child actors and all. i did feel super bad for him and the way he was treated by his parents all his life, like a revolving door of money and dependency. id still bark for him .

everything in between was fantastic!!! i loved their little agreement and all the shenanigans they got into. the chase in the woods??? HOLY CRAPPPP i was panting. the submission???????????????? BARK BARK BARK

idk why this is releasing in march because this was a howling good time for october and im so glad i was able to read it!!! 💜✨🐺

┆ ⤿ 💌 4 stars!

I enjoyed this one! If you ever found yourself scrolling through the teen wolf tag on ao3 at 3am at night this one is for you. It didn't feel like it pushed too hard into the shifter aspect and kept a good blend of fantasy details and romance! Growing up in online fandoms it was fun to see all the different elements through the lens of a celebrity-- from shipping to unrealistic standards. I also loved the fact that Devin was 42 years old, it felt different and unique and Alex isn't too far off in her upper mid 30s. However, I will say at times he doesn't feel his age but I also feel like that can be easily attributed to the fact he's a once child actor who has lived his whole life on set up till this point essentially. I kind of wish we got a bit more groveling from Devin in many occasions I feel like Alex forgave a bit too easily, but overall this was the perfect book to read while waiting on my delayed flight! Perfect to read if you love werewolves, romance, and fandom culture!

I was beyond surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! I half listened/half read this after I splurged and got the Fairyloot edition (which is beautiful by the way). This was my first book by Rosie but definitely will not be my last! I liked all of the details she put into the backstory- how in every chapter there was a reference to the wikipages that Alex had made when she was a young teen. I loved the backstory with these two and honestly the differences! Alex was this confident in her differences bleeding heart black cat who had her passions and focused on those. She had been crushed by Devin when she was younger but had moved on. And then Devin was a washed up actor who was clinging to his famous role as a werewolf detective and now he had somehow turned into an actual werewolf. The way that Rosie wove their story together was wonderful. I just saw someone compare this to if Ali Hazelwood and Lana Ferguson had a love child and I agree with that to the POSITIVE! The tension and chemistry between these two with the pacing was done perfectly! I loved how Devin away from LA became this better person. This person that realized there were things besides acting in life that mattered. I loved the trials that they did together- OMG Rosie the TENSION in those scenes was next level. I loved how even though Alex came off like she didn't care she really did and how Devin helped stand up for her in town. I also loved the amount of supernatural mixed with a small town. These just made each other BETTER- and we all know how much we love that!

Devin has a problem. He is trying to cling to his glory days when he was on TV but realizing that he may be at the end of his career. He thinks he has ONE more chance to prove to the people that he can reprise the role so he can be an icon again. But weird things are happening. He is waking up naked in his backyard with a video of him looking like he is turning into a werewolf surfacing online. Somehow he gets the name Alex Lawson- she knows all there is to know of his show the Arcane Files and maybe she can help him through this. He doesn't know what to expect of this, but what he doesn't expect is how much he enjoys being out in the fresh air. How attracted he is to Alex. How invested he becomes in helping her in this small town. How much her help means to him. And how through these trials they do to determine if he is in fact a werwolf- how much his WOLF likes Alex. How much he is learning because she is helping him. Like how he can smell her arousal. Or when her heart trips up from a lie like when he asks if she thinks he is hot or if she likes him. But her soon realizes they have a complicated past and he finds himself wanting to be a different man than that guy was. He wants to be a man that Alex is proud to call her own. He knows they come from opposite worlds but he just knows in his gut they could work. Which is all but confirmed after they share nights together and get closer. But then his need for this role confuses him. He finds himself home on the worst night ALONE and doesn't want to come back from his wolf. The only thing that is able to bring him back is Alex which is how he knows that he is done with Hollywood. Bring on the small town gossip baby- he just hopes Alex is on board because he can't think of anything else that would make him happier.

Alex is a bit of a lone wolf. She has a hard time interacting with people. She can't shake the fact that her mom left her. Those awful things Devin Ashwood, her hero, said to her all of those years ago. So she is passionate about what she does and is good with her inner circle of friends. But then Devin Ashwood shows up in town. He asks her for coffee. He tells her he is becoming a werewolf. Is this a joke? It has to be. But he is serious. He doesn't seem to remember her at all from all of those years ago and despite that Alex finds herself agreeing to help him because of her knowledge of his show. So she sets up some trials to prove him wrong. There is no way this is happening. But then she witnesses it herself. The man turns into a werewolf now WHAT!? He has an inner wolf. Alex finds herself intrigued and wanting to help him while also trying to remain aloof. But now Devin can see beneath her layers. He knows when she is lying. He knows she is attracted to him. But that doesn't mean she is going to act on it. But the more she is around him the more she realizes that there is a different man under there. A man who needs some coaxing to realize that LA isn't all that he needs in life. He can find other things to be good at. He can invest in himself and enjoy life. And the more she is around him the more she realizes that yes they are different but she wants to figure out a way to make this work. She wants to be the woman he is proud to have on his arm. But then when they get to LA everything changes- HE changes. And Alex questions everything until he needs her more than ever and of course she says yes. She is scared to open up to him again though- especially since she is all in and isn't sure where he is.

Like I said, I was surprised at how much I liked this one! The narrators were great. The pacing was perfect. There was just enough supernatural mied with small town that got me hooked while making it a lighter read. The transformation of both of these characters was great! Devin became someone who realized that what he does matters and he can help people beyond being an entertainer. While Alex realized that though she fought it, she wanted to be loved. She wanted someone to chose her and stay. Just really well done with the weaving of this story! I definitely recommend :)

Thank you @berkleyromance for sending me this book for free because I would have paid upwards of $1M to read it and you really saved me some money.

This is a love letter to fandom culture and a fanfic writer’s dream 😉 If you have ever been a part of any fandom, an AO3 enthusiast or loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer and/or Supernatural…this is for you (THIS IS FOR US!)

Devin is at the end of his very successful run in Hollywood playing a werewolf in a popular supernatural show when he begins to turn into a werewolf in real life. The only person who can help him is Alex, a social recluse who is stuck in her small town to help her father. She used to be the mod for the biggest and most popular wiki about Devin’s show and her knowledge is the only thing that can help him.

This book was hilarious and surprisingly tender, with many sweet moments. Both characters experience big emotional growth as the layers they’ve created to protect themselves begin to be pulled back. And the SPICE 🌶️…it’s on page and the best kind because it moves the plot forward, among other things 😮‍💨

I loved every second of this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
