Yet this is how he meets Tuftorious Snook, collector of lost objects, and just one of the many Finders living in Silverthorn Forest.

Thrilled by his discovery, Max can't wait to find out more about the Finders. But when he accidentally breaks their most important rule – never steal – he's banished from their home. With Silverthorn Forest in danger, however, Max must somehow find a way to save Tuft and the other Finders before it's too late.

Once again Rachel Chivers Khoo has smashed it out of the park once again with another magical tale. Equal parts The Hobbit and The Magic Faraway Tree, you will be engrossed from page one with then an ever grateful sigh of relief that the adventures will continue.

In Finders of Silverthorn Forest: The Lost Treasures we meet our little hero Max, also our even smaller hero Tuft in his mismatch footwear. Together they work to solve where Max’s grandmother may have left her time capsule, was it in the woods or in the garden? Max armed with a shovel, a borrowed coat and Tuft, they both learn a lot from each other. Max will discover the world of the Finders, whilst Tuft will discover that is a life in which your footwear can match.

With Rachel’s magical writing coupled with the enchanting illustrations by Laura Catalán, In Finders of Silverthorn Forest: The Lost Treasures is a book that all readers should find themselves picking up come May.

Tuft and Max are both looking for things in the forest. Tuft is a fox-like, squirrelly Finder, part of a whole civilisation of Finders, who keep whatever human discards they come across, while Max is a child tasked with trying to rediscover a time capsule his gran buried. There's a deadline on that, too, as the developers are moving in (as the map tells us way before the text actually does). Mind, Tuft's lot thinks there is a deadline, too, as they have word of Doomsday – the nature of which we can guess at here. But with everything about to change, will either of them succeed – and how can the two species, normally kept firmly apart, get along together?

What this all boils down to is a saga that is really quite guessable – and yet is written with such pace and pleasure that all that is too familiar and too obvious is easily forgiven. I at least could tell what this was, and what the case was with that, and I am sure the smarter child would too – but it still instils warmth, not the coldness such a blatant non-twist normally delivers. Heck, even the fact this has a subtitle and therefore starts a series is evidence of a happy ending that runs counter to much of the plot.

Said plot is taut and gripping, mind, with nothing like a dull moment. I see the audio version is only three hours long – although I'd not recommend that, as the artwork here is top notch too. You'd just have to double-dip and experience both. What there is here is an instant immediacy to things, and no lumpen world-building – this has come fully fleshed out, and you're instantly with Max on his mission, as unusual as it at first sounds. Tuft, too, is a fine character – the Finders close to a lot we've already read of yet distinctive enough – and more books with them together can only be something to really look forward to. Four and a half stars, I'd say.

April 2025: Finders of Silverthorn Forest: The Lost Treasures

Max is determined to help her grandmother find her time capsule box before she has to leave her home. The challenge is that her granny cannot remember where she buried it – perhaps somewhere in her garden or in the woods.

In a last-ditch effort, Granny hinted at a treehouse in an old oak tree. Max found it, but to his surprise, the treehouse was occupied! Meet Tuft Snook, a Finder.

A Finder is a magical creature that discovers lost items, labels them, and keeps an inventory. Their whiskers play a significant role, as they can sense where missing things are located. The Finders in Silverthorn Forest are led by Tuft's grandpa, the Old Grey Snook, and they follow a golden rule: finder's keepers.

🌳

I could have written a longer introduction, but I'm too excited to jump to my review. Days before this book arrived, I was about to reread @rachelchiverskhoo 's The Magician Next Door. I didn't realize until now that her cosy magic themes often linger in my mind, and this new book struck a chord in my heart!

I love the setting with the charming grandmother's house, the garden, and the woods. The concept of keeping a memory box is something many girls can relate to; I just tidied up my childhood trinket box, and it gets so sentimental!

The Finders are the most adorable creatures! They cherish and keep human "trash" that they find as if it's a treasure. You will enjoy all the details in the illustrations by @lauracatalan_illustration of these little beings. Although I received an uncorrected proof, I still loved it! The silly but lovable Old Grey Snook is my favourite Finder!

Most importantly, the theme of tree protection is brilliantly included in this children's book. I believe the awareness of tree conservation in our country is still lacking, despite our amazing and diverse tropical jungles and landscape.

I would definitely recommend this book for children, as it offers fun, cosiness and the important environmental message! Thank you @definitelybookskids for this copy, this book will be available at all good bookstores.

Great story - cute, furry creatures who find things that are lost but could lose their homes as their forest is in danger. Can they trust human Max enough to save themselves? Wombles for modern times.
