Jump and jive with this jolly band of insects to the creepy crawly calypso beat! From spiders to fireflies, butterflies to centipedes, Debbie Harter's humorous illustrations perfectly match the Caribbean spirit of this jaunty rhyming text, which introduces children to cardinal and ordinal numbers - and takes them straight into the marvellous world of mini-beasts!

This is a super cool concept book about numbers which also teaches children about different kinds of bugs and musical instruments. This text of this book is a song and it comes with the CD if purchased new. We got this book as a gift from my son's godfather. He is so sweet for giving it to him because I am from Trinidad so I loved being able to teach my son some calypso music in a developmentally appropriate way.
This book is colorful, musical, informational and insect-full. It caught my daughter's attention in those many ways! I will never feel the same way towards a cockroach and a tarantula again. :)
Our honeymoon was in New Orleans, we’re Guardians of the Groove for WWOZ from the Rocky Mountains, and it’s on our bucket list to get to Jazzfest before Mavis turns into a teenager. So this book had a leg up on the competition.
Moral: Diversify your music and find something new.
Length: Nice and short and easy to sing to.
Favorite Line: “Fifth come the fireflies, with brass trumpets to toot.”
Overall impression: If you follow my Goodreads - and thanks to the two or three of you who do - you know I hate bugs and most children’s books that make them out to be friendly. But given most real bands are full of egotistical jerks, you don’t have to like the bugs here. You just have to appreciate their music. And did I EVER! Learn to count, learn your insects, and learn calypso music all in one place, and smile as you do. You can even listen to the song on cd (or YouTube if you get a used copy). Bonus stars for not making me want to hug or own a bug.
