Chris Grabenstein has been entertaining kids (and me) with and without James Patterson since 2013 when I Funny, Treasure Hunters and his first puzzle-solving novel, Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library came out. He consistently creates relatable characters in that middle grade range of 9-12ish and places them in settings that are imaginative (Island of Dr Libris), filled with action and adventure (Max Einstein & Treasure Hunters), heart-warming (Shine), funny (House of Robots & I Funny) and even slightly haunted (Best Nerds Forever). Going back to his “roots,” so to speak, Ms Pennypickle introduces another eccentric gazillionaire who likes to create a quest with puzzles at every leg of the journey.
In this puzzle-filled race to a million dollars, the teams are made up of two people who are related in some way-brothers, sisters, father/son, married couple and so on. The stops are all along the famous Route 66 and will give readers a look at real life places such as Pops Soda Ranch with hundreds of odd drinks featuring such yumminess as hot dogs, assorted condiments and beef jerky and the Cadillac Ranch and its cars buried hood first. The game participants are a mixed bag and demonstrate a variety of personalities that are sure to entertain, esp. the cheating, arguing McDimpsey brothers from the dysfunctional family, and the puzzles come fast and furious but do give time for those who want to do their own internet searching to solve them before the players do.
Ethan and Benjamin/Benji Broderick are the main characters, with Benji in the role of narrator, and the two used to be close. Time has changed things and now that Ethan is about to leave for college, a cross-country game may be just the opportunity to fix things. But the two are barely speaking as the trip/game begins and it isn’t until they temporarily partner up with sisters Kaitlyn and Lily that the ice begins to thaw. The foursome, with Benji leading out on many of the puzzles but needing Ethan when anything physical comes up, do very well together, but only one team can win in the end. Grabenstein throws in a pretty big twist near the end and many will love the result but some may be like me and wish there was a little more spice and fire in the final seconds instead of the warm fuzziness.
As with all of Chris Grabenstein novels, the text is free of profanity, sexual content and violence. Physical descriptions are sparse but Ethan, Benji, Kaitlyn and Lily read white and one puzzle-solving team is likely Hispanic based on naming conventions.
For readers who enjoy solving puzzles as they read (or reading about other kids solving them) try: Bletchley Riddle by Steve Sheinkin, Currie’s The Delta Games, Alyson Gerber’s The Liar’s Society series, older The Westing Game, Stewart’s The Mysterious Benedict Society and Jennifer Chambliss’ Book Scavenger duology.

I was introduced to Chris Grabenstein by reading one of his Lemoncello books which I adore. I find myself enjoying this one too in a fun and different fashion. This book, geared to middle grades, is an adventure that has puzzle solving, a wild road adventure, and hoot among the family members. We have Benji, 12 year old and 18 year old brother Ethan, different kids as night and day. Ethan, good looking sort of stud, and Benji, short, kinda heavy but way smart kid. A bit of a tiff exists between them. As they explain what this contest is all about, their parents explain this summer trip to the Grand Canyon, which they really don't really want to do.
So they head off to the pancake diner, when they actually find a clue that pushes them into the "grand puzzle race". They have to solve the challenges laid out by Ms. Pennypickle while on Route 66 for an amazing chance to win one million dollars. There are six families total participating in this contest. What was especially fun for me, was that part of the race was in New Mexico, my home sweet home. Was fun to read or hear of familiar spots in our state!
This kid, Benji is a real crack brain, who is a whiz at puzzles and is a huge fan of trivia and games--and he has a ton of knowledge about different stuff, which really makes him quite a fun and likeable kid. Meanwhile, Ethan is very friendly, social, and more excited about his future with college friends than with his family. What's cool is that the boys begin to see that they have individual talents that are very complimentary to these puzzles. They find that developing complimentary skills such as Ethan becoming more humble to work puzzles together.
There is a mystery behind Ms. Pennypickle's identity which we find is an interesting and fascinating part of the story. We'll learn that each puzzle and clue will give us more knowledge and understanding of who this character Ms. Pennypickle is.
What a fun book. I enjoyed it very much. Even designed for middle aged students, it served this old gal just fine. It was a clever and fun read. Recommend. Rate 5.0 stars.

I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed all of the characters and their personalities and I really appreciated the variety of puzzles throughout. If you enjoyed the Mr. Lemoncello books, you are sure to love this one as well. Now I want to drive down the Old Route 66 to see all of the places that were mentioned in the book!

Twelve-year-old Benjamin Broderick is into puzzles and random knowledge. Eighteen-year-old Ethan Broderick is into sports and girls. These brothers don’t have much in common and aren’t very close, and it won’t get any better once Ethan leaves for college in the fall. Though being coerced into taking a road trip together isn’t how Ethan wants to spend the beginning of his summer, he can’t deny that the perks might just be worth it. Especially when Benjamin wins them a chance at a million-dollar prize, and all they have to do is work together to solve a series of puzzles set up by the eccentric puzzle purveyor, Ms. Pennypickle—before their competition beats them to it.
This book was a lot of fun overall to read. I really felt for Benjamin, who keeps trying to connect with his brother without being pushy. And Ethan isn’t mean or bad, he’s just an 18-year-old about to go out into the world and not exactly thinking about how his little brother fits into his life anymore. There were parts to this book that felt a little too convenient or coincidental or just unrealistic, but it all made sense in the end, and in a way that I really enjoyed. There's a twist to this book that I didn't see coming, and then a second, smaller twist that I anticipated, based on the first twist, though that doesn't mean I wasn't happy to be right. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite movies, but to even say what that movie is would be a spoiler for this book, to those who know the movie.
The book has a lot of interesting trivia in it, especially about Route 66, introducing me to locations that I've never heard of and probably never would have, but I have to admit that it made me want to take a road trip to experience some of these places. There is also plenty of humor and a fun shout-out to Grabenstein's much-loved Lemoncello series. And speaking of that, I appreciate Grabenstein wanting to go in a new direction from that popular series yet still wanting to include puzzles in this book. I felt there was more diversity in puzzle types in this book, and I really liked trying to solve some of them along with the characters. And while it's difficult to avoid comparing Ms. Pennypickle with Mr. Lemoncello, due to them both being eccentric, rich, genius puzzle creators, I noted some personality differences in Ms. Pennypickle that made her her own person. And the story focuses more on family and relationships than the end goal. I don't know that this book can become a series, but I do hope Grabenstein continues to write puzzle-filled, adventurous books like this. I really recommend this book for kids around 8-12, and for parents too—any age, really, especially those who like games.

Ethan and his younger brother Benji do not get along well. Ethan plays sports, while Benji loves puzzles. After winning a coupon for free breakfast after playing a retro arcade game, Benji and Ethan go out to eat together. This is after Benji embarrasses Ethan in front of his girlfriend. While waiting for their food, Benji solves a puzzle maze that tells him to go to a building at a certain time. Once there, they find they are in a race for a million dollars against other teams. This works out well for the boys, as their parents want them to take a road trip together before Ethan leaves for college. The trip takes them to multiple places along Route 66, where there are many puzzles to be solved along the way. During the trip, the boys start to bond and make friends with Kaitlin and Lily, another team in the race.
STRENGTHS
I could really feel how the boys' relationship grew. I felt how tensed it was in the beginning and it made me happy when they grew closer. The puzzles were super fun, even if I could not solve any. I enjoyed the random bits of information Benji sprinkled into the book. I also appreciate Benji's humor as most of it is funny. Most of the other teams were memorable. I loved learning about Route 66 during this book, I had no idea how much cool stuff was on it! Ethan helped solve some of the puzzles too, which i liked as it meant that Benji was not the only smart one and Ethan was just there.
DISLIKES
Jaxson's relationship with his father was not really touched on. Based on their interactions, Jaxson's father does not appreciate his son and is almost abusive towards him. I felt that the villains of this book were not really needed, and the book could have used time spent with them on bonding between the boys and Kaitlin and Lily.

I "met" Chris Grabenstein when I read the Lemoncello books - needless to say I was instantly hooked! (I'm in my 50's but I still appreciate quality, fun YA books, and Grabenstein always delivers! The man is a genius, I give his books to all the teens and tweens I know, as well as YA appreciating adults.
This time around, our quirky hero is Ms. Penelope Pennypickle, a very rich toy and puzzle maker. She sets up a scavenger hunt (think "Amazing Race") and teams of two have to race along old Route 66 from clue to clue. Whoever wins the final leg of the race will win $1 Million dollars!
The teams are all related (a husband and wife, aunt and niece, and several sibling teams.) Young Benji and his older brother are on one of the teams, and they need to learn how to work together in order to take on this challenge. Brotherly bonding happens along the way, as well as new friendships in the making. We have a team of antagonists in the McDimsey brothers (They cheat - a lot!)

I had a blast reading MS. PENNYPICKLE’S PUZZLE QUEST! I am a huge fan of anything puzzle-related, be it brain teasers, crosswords, word-search, interlocking metal brain benders, puzzle boxes, virtual escape rooms, or jigsaw puzzles.
But—most of all—I love spending time solving perplexing puzzles together with my family.

This was another great puzzle solving book in the same vein as the Lemoncello series! Benjamin's brother, Ethan, is about to graduate high school and move out for college. All Benji does is annoy Ethan, so Ethan can't wait to get away. Ethan doesn't love Benjamin's nerdy obsession with solving puzzles or unique facts that he just HAS to share. At a family dinner where the boys' dad and uncles once again regale them with tales of their epic road trip as teens, the adults come up with a scheme to tempt Ethan into taking Benjamin on a similar journey. With a free breakfast that Benjamin won in an arcade game, the boys hit the road. Soon they become involved in an Amazing Race style contest to win a million dollars.
This fun road trip book features many locations along Route 66. There are puzzles, friendships, villains, and many wacky characters along the way. If your kids love the Lemoncello series or the Amazing Race, this will be a book for them! This would also make a great family read aloud or audio book.

When I saw that Chris Grabenstein had written another middle grade children’s book, it was a no brainer…I just had to read it! I am a huge fan of the Mr. Lemoncello series, Dog Squad, and The Smartest Kid in the Universe book series.
Ms. Pennypickles’s Puzzle Quest did not disappoint! This book was so much fun!! I love how the main characters Benji and Ethan were so relatable! I think most everyone can relate to having a difficult sibling and I loved watching their relationship grow and see each other in different ways.
I loved that there were a variety of puzzles to solve with humor and interesting facts sprinkled throughout. I highly recommend it! I already have it on order and can’t wait to add it to my middle school library. I just know it will fly off the bookshelf with my middle school students!

Thank you Random House Children's, Random House Books for Young Readers, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. WOW! What an adventure! I had so much fun going on this road trip with Benji and Ethan that I might recreate it with my own kids. Loved the characters & their personalities, loved the puzzles, and absolutely loved Chris Grabenstein’s writing. I “met” Chris when I read one of the books he co-wrote with James Patterson for Patterson’s Jimmy’s Books imprint for young readers and I was hooked. Then I inhaled Mr. Limoncello series and am now so excited for this newest addition. Hoping that this is a start of a new series full of puzzles, action, adventure, and all kinds of fun shenanigans.

I adore the Broderick brothers. As a little sister, of a dynamic duo of sisters, this book is completely relatable with sibling struggles. I hope there is an opportunity to meet these two characters again in a future book.

It’s hard to rate when you still have how amazing Mr. Lemoncello was in the back of your mind, but Pennypickle was a good book. I felt like this one possibly had more emotion rather than laughs so perhaps it’s a little more mature than Lemoncello? It was still very good with fun puzzles to solve and it was fun to learn about places along Route 66 that might be fun to visit. I’m surprised they didn’t stop by the center of the universe in Oklahoma, but there are only so many stops you can make I’m sure or the book would have been super long.
There was a twist at the end I wasn’t expecting, but it actually added a bit more for me, since it showed how important family was to all the characters. I am looking forward to more Pennypickle books! I hope families can be brought together and learn to appreciate each other’s differences and love each other.

As someone who loved the Mr. Lemoncello series, naturally I was drawn into Ms. Pennypickle's Puzzle Quest, and I wasn't let down. The Amazing Race vibes, the nostalgia of Route 66, and the mixed bag of personalities among all the teams had me wanting to read more as soon as possible. While the puzzles appeared quickly one after the other, I didn't feel overwhelmed or overburdened, and I felt like I had plenty of time to solve them myself, too.
I would highly recommend this to readers of all ages who love puzzles and adventure.

Benji and Ethan are brother who are growing up and growing apart. Benji is still in middle school and Ethan to about to go to college and too cool/sophisticated for his baby brother. Their parents gift them but mostly Ethan a car with a string attached that Benji and him need to road trip to the Grand Canyon. Somehow they end up on a Amazing Race like mystery puzzle adventure along old Route 66, for fans of Lemoncello its a milder puzzling quest but with more places to add to the adventure. I loved the twists and teamwork to make the puzzles connect.

This was such an adorable and wholesome middle grade read with such a sweet message! 💛 It hit me right in the mom of two boys feels. I know its probably because I just sent my oldest off to college, and this story mirrored my life a bit more than I expected but man oh man I loved this book.
It’s about two brothers, Ethan and Ben, who couldn’t be more different. Ethan’s the sports loving, outgoing one, while Ben, who is much younger would rather solve puzzles and play arcade games. Ethan definitely finds his little brother a bit annoying (as older brothers do 😂) but before Ethan heads off to college, they set out on a road trip that turns into so much more than they bargained for.
Their first stop is an eccentric diner where they stumble onto a clue for a puzzle that could win them a MILLION dollars. 🤑 Naturally, they have to give it a shot, right? I know I would! What follows is this fast paced, fun, smart, and totally heartwarming adventure that tests their patience, their bond, and their brotherly love. SWOON!

I really enjoyed this book. I do watch Amazing Race and I liked how the story went along with the show, except for at the end. I was a bit disappointed that the boys were racing against actors and it was a way to bring the boys together. I did like how the boys and other teams learned to work together to solve the puzzles. Some of the puzzles were a challenge for me. The way the author wrote out how to solve the puzzle was also excellent. He just didn't give the answer. This book showed that there are many types of puzzles and thinking and solving them is a task that can help you problem solve in real life.
I will suggest this book to my students. It was a fun enjoyable read.

September 22, 2025What a lovely book. This is a perfect book after finishing up the Lemoncello series. Ms. Pennypickle is dynamic and quirky and just a fun person to read about. I love the concept of this book, and Ms. Pennypickles goal with her hunts. I think that young readers are going to enjoy it as well. I also adore a book dealing with puzzles as they are near and dear to my heart.

Ethan and Benji wind up in a contest and take a road trip on the famous RT. 66. I like how random, fun facts were sprinkled throughout the book. They have their differences but come together when it matters.

This book is kind of a cross between Willie Wonka and The Great American race, with a side order of puzzles. I really enjoyed this book, and as an educator am recommending it for both classroom libraries, school libraries, as well as personal libraries. It will be one I pass along to my own grandkids. Highly recommend.

This was fun! Plenty of puzzles to solve like in the Lemoncello series, but the types are more broad and not all about books. I enjoyed the adventure for the brothers and the other competitors. There are some nice twists along the way, too. Lemoncello fans should pick this up.

My kids and I listened to this on Audible, and we loved it! It was so funny, and we had fun trying to solve the puzzles alongside Benjamin and Ethan. Great middle grade read! We love Chris Grabenstein.
