I checked this out of the library by accident. I wanted the cookbook with the same name by Heather Brown. But I looked through this book to see what it contained. Nothing healthy nothing easy. Not a single recipe I wanted to try.
First off: If you somehow stumbled upon this book by accident, and if you haven’t already, GO RIGHT NOW and follow @lilyloutay on every available platform. I’ll wait. Okay. So… The book is beautifully photographed and has wonderful flow. I read cookbooks like I read novels, so for a cookbook to be beautiful and engaging as well as have recipes that are something approachable and easy without “exotic” ingredients (No black finishing salt or truffle oil! HUZZAH!) is a real “unicorn.” As someone raised to be a Southern woman by a “passel” of a Southern women, I went into the cookbook expecting few surprises. I didn’t care because…HAVE YOU SEEN @lilyloutay?!? Hannah and James are cuter than a box of speckled puppies and sexier than your favorite rom-com smolder. (Hannah is my “girl crush.” Don’t tell my mama.) But, I was going through the recipes and actually got excited about cooking things like Chicken Fried Steak again! Do you know how hard it is to get excited about cooking Chicken Fried Steak? Well, it’s not when you got Hannah “Lilyloutay” Taylor talking to you about it. She also does not have fancy equipment (I think the most expensive equipment I have spied is her Kitchen Aid mixer or Ninja blender) or insane pantry staples. Hannah favors higher quality, homemade staples in small batches that you will actually run out of and need to make fresh than the large packaged versions that will expire and you’ll have to throw out This is a gorgeous cookbook for so many reasons. But my favorite recipe is “Recipe for Love.” That alone makes it beautiful. If you don’t get a little misty-eyed, you don’t deserve to eat Ms. Taylor’s Chicken Fried Steak. Bless your heart.
I love watching @lilyloutay on IG and so I just had to pick this up when I saw it at the library. I liked the back story in the intro and she has a snippet at the top of each recipe, about it &/or it's inspiration but I thought many of the recipes were the typical things you find in just about any cookbook. I copied out 3 recipes I want to try and am realizing that they are more of the unique ones she had. The artwork and the layout were very beautiful and pleasing, and I love that every recipe had a corresponding image.
This is a Southern cookbook with lots of good, basic recipes for many Southern classics. I liked that the first chapter was "homemade kitchen staples" like vanilla extract, pasta dough, stock/bone broth, etc. The recipes included a good variety of appetizers/snacks, breakfast, main dishes, soups, breads, and desserts. I found a couple recipes I'd like to try. There are definitely better and worse Southern cookbooks out there and I think this one falls right in the middle.
A stunning hardcover edition celebrating heart, family, and love in every dish
★★★★½☆ (4.5/5)
Measure with Your Heart is a beautiful and deeply personal collection of recipes rooted in memory, tradition, and togetherness. Each dish is shared with warmth and intention, reminding you that the most meaningful meals are made with love and shared with family. Paired with its truly stunning hardcover presentation, this is a cookbook to treasure and return to for years to come.
This includes way too many recipes for baked goods, which goes against the title of this cookbook and to “measure with your heart”. Baking is exact and it’s difficult to “measure with your heart” and still have the item come out correct. On top of that, so many recipes look time consuming and call for expensive ingredients.
The author is a social media influencer. Her cookbook does not have any new recipes, but her recipes are reflective of America's food. From homemade chicken nuggets to meatloaf to gumbo to a peach cheesecake, the recipes are hearty and filling. The recipes should be easy for most cooks to accomplish. Each recipe has a photo. Points off for not including a chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Who doesn’t love Hannah Taylor?! 😍 What I love about this cookbook is that it is basically good home cooking written out for you to try for yourself and/or your family & friends. A few quick meals…but, mostly recipes that will take a little time to slow down and make some magic for your people…or just yourself. I can get behind good people.
This is my new favorite cookbook! It arrived this morning and I immediately tried her recipe for homemade butter. I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS SO EASY! Bless you, Hannah, you've changed my cooking game for good.
This was a Christmas present from my best friend and written by someone I follow on Instagram. I love her videos and this cookbook was just delightful. Lots of interesting family stories, beautiful photos and delicious recipes. I loved it.
Nothing ground breaking in terms of recipes but it is a lovely collection of traditional southern cooking. What makes it a standout is the way she writes and connects with her readers.
This book has some good sounding recipes but I'm likely not making any of them. There isn't a quick recipe anywhere in here. The ingredient list is long. I'm sure it's all delicious, it just isn't for me.
