reread having bought the paperback. I stand by this review.

I'm not typically a fan of Marvel's Star Wars movie adaptations, a lot of them fall flat for me.

We have waited 5 years for this adaptation, and we've had time and stories since the movie came out.

I'll put my hand up and say TROS is not my favourite Star Wars movie.

But this book, with Jody being the pen and Will Sliney on Art, does a really good job of depicting the movie and expanding on it passed what the movie was allowed to do.

The Art is stylistic and relies on the duality of Rey and Kylo in the way only a comic can.

Jody gives us more of Leia than the movie was able to do, and there are some beautiful scenes.

While it's not perfect, and it's still just retelling the movie's story, this might still be one of the better Movie/Show adaptations that Marvel has done.

This graphic novel collects issues 1-5 of The Rise of Skywalker adaptation. It follows the plot of the movie: Rey and friends hear about Palpatine's return and seek a Sith wayfinder to go to Exogol and put and end to the problem. With adaptations, sometimes some movement or changes must be made, and it is certainly a challenge to turn a three hour movie into a five issue comic. Some areas where the film allows for some cinematic action are clipped due to pacing and spacing, though the reader does have the gutter to fill in a lot of the blanks.

The artwork is mostly good, but there are a few places where it feels a bit clinky; they could have modified some of the imagery a bit for the sake of the adaptation. One thing I actually really liked about this adaptation is the internal thoughts the reader gets from Kylo Ren and Rey, somwthing we don't get in the movie. Instead of his last word being "Ow," (yet, watch the movie and notice this--which isn't added into the graphic novel adaptation for obvious choice reasons), we rather get his final thoughts and what he thinks as he is sending his life force into Rey. These internal thought aspects really add a lot of depth to the sequencing of events and the characterization that we don't get on the visual level in the movie.

Rise of Skywalker is a very flawed movie so this graphic novel had its work cut out for it. However I was so pleased it FIXED so many issues, Luke and Leia feel way more important to the story then they were before, Ben’s redemption is fleshed out, Palps method of return is teased better, how much the Jedi helped Rey is shown and how Palps built his fleet are addressed.

Overall this is the final word in the story of the Skywalker Saga, and I am satisfied, this graphic novel succeeds in making the story make more sense.

I was always dissatisfied with how the Skywalker Saga ended, and in some ways I still am, but this graphic novel has at least made the final story more enjoyable.

A solid adaptation.

The artwork is great. There are several pages with awesome panels, and really in general the paneling is unique and cool.

The story is meh. I think this really needed to be six issues, as there were parts of the movie that had to be totally skipped over. I know that is typical for a comic adaptation, but it felt like some plot points were completely dropped. The comic didn't include the sequence at the beginning of the film where Poe and Finn learn about a spy, yet they still show Hux reveal he is "the spy" later on.

I liked the film of this story, but I think the people who hated the film saw it like this comic series: rushed, glossed-over scenes or opportunities, disjointed plot, stilted. The additional internal thoughts here were an okay part, but they didn't really move the action much (and, some scenes weren't even included from the film). Beautiful covers, but I shan't judge this book by them.

I really enjoy Houser’s adaptations (and other work in general) and this was no exception. Sure, the plot isn’t A grade and it’s still too compressed, but this medium removes some of the issues the film had (one of which being that Leia could not have additional scenes, for the obvious reason).

Poor Jody Houser, having the disgraceful task to adapt the utter piece of trash that is The Rise of Skywalker. She does het best and the artwork is fine but that doesnt change a thing about the terrible fragmented plot and dialogue.
