my biggest complaint about this book is I felt it was all about Nat and Hoyt instead of Nat, Hoyt and Jake. Jake was always in the background but not a significant particiant. I love this series but the past few books I have read from this author lacks plot and sex scene after another. (I can't believe I am complaining about too much sex lol)
Oh boy. So I really wanted to like this story. I’ve been waiting a bit for this but, after reading it, it sort of feels like a lunch-bag-let-down :P Nat and Jake have been together for 18 or so years. In that time they’ve raised a son and developed a loving and trusting Dom/sub relationship. Enter Hoyt who is the real father of Joe (the college age son) and basically the first love of Nat’s life. Nat and Hoyt had a love thing going on during their own college years while Jake hung around on the fringes of their relationship as a good friend…who just happened to be in love with Nat as well. Nat gets pregnant and Hoyt gets tired of being broke and beholden to a father we (along with Nat) later learn is a bit abusive and pretty overbearing. Hoyt also later confesses that he wanted to marry Nat but didn’t believe he’d get anywhere or be able to take care of her if he continued on the path he was currently walking. So, Hoyt decides to sign up for the Navy and learn a trade through them. He didn’t consider that Nat wouldn’t leave her younger sister, Jessica, behind with their own version of an abusive/drunk father. So Nat winds up pregnant and can’t leave until her sister has graduated high school and can be moved to another location away from the father.
Somehow a discussion happens, and it’s decided (by Hoyt and Jake) that Hoyt will go off to the Navy and Jake will marry and take care of Nat and the baby. Hoyt goes off, Nat stays with Jake until Jessica grads and marries. Then the two move off to Desire and raise baby Joe. In between all this time Hoyt makes visits as often as he can, especially during the holidays (though how he manages to do this given that he signed on to the freakin Navy and became a SEAL we’ll never know) and he continues to love Nat. Nat continues to love Hoyt but also develops a great and deep love for Jake. Now Hoyt’s retiring from the Navy and he just can’t get over Nat. He’s talked it over with Jake who understands that Nat still loves Hoyt. Jake makes a rather large sacrifice (again!) and brings Hoyt back into their lives with the hope of developing a threesome.
It sounds like a decent story and it probably would have been if everything hadn’t been so damned rushed. I felt that Hoyt blew hot and cold throughout the story. One moment he was all “I love you so much” to Nat and the next he was angry at her because she couldn’t give him the “intimacy” he wanted. Hoyt seemed pretty convinced that she was just using him for sex and saying she loved him but not really trusting him to actually stay with her.
And gee, I don’t know why Nat might have that problem. Maybe it’s because both Hoyt and Jake are expecting a fucking perfect relationship between the three of them to just magically occur in less than a week of Hoyt being back in their lives full time. Not to mention that this is the first time in 18 plus years he’s been intimate with Nat (who has happily spent those years in loving dominant relationship with Jake). Of course things aren’t just going to fall in to place. You need to expect awkwardness and Nat as much as admits that she’s got body image issues because Hello! the last time Hoyt saw her she had the body of a young woman. She isn’t used to him any more and it’s not like they had a Dom/sub relationship when they had been dating originally so I find it extremely hard to believe that both Hoyt and Jake expect her to just leap into a relationship where both men are her masters. Seriously! Jake admits that it took him years to earn her trust and yet here he expects Hoyt to just wander in and have that instant connection in 3 days. Utterly ridiculous.
Hoyt was, in my opinion, incredibly immature throughout the book. I see little change in his behavior from the past to the present in this story. Here’s a guy who, without consulting his girlfriend, decides to enlist in the Navy. When he finds out that she’s not willing to move-and come on! This is one of the prime reasons you have these sorts of discussions with your significant other before you make the life altering decisions-he leaves her behind pregnant with his own kid. He had “obligations” he signed up for the Navy. He had to go *eye roll*. I’m not exactly sure what Hoyt thought he and Nat were going to do anyway. Where exactly is Nat going to move too? Even if she didn’t have Jessica to worry about, Hoyt wasn’t exactly going to be around all that often. The most she could’ve done was move on to a base somewhere and hopefully found housing. Being pregnant she’d be on her own while Hoyt was off doing who knows what. Plus it’s not like his pay would be enough to support her and a child. Even if she wasn’t pregnant, she’d be left along for a fair chunk of time while he was off potentially getting himself killed. Not knocking military service, but Hoyt’s claim that he did this for Nat so that he’d be able to support her and all that jazz is utterly bogus. He was incredibly selfish with his decisions and when we flash forward to the present in the book, he hasn’t changed all that much.
Hoyt’s really quick to get Nat into bed and start demanding she follow his orders. But he’s also really quick to get pissed off at Nat when she doesn’t do the little “trust”/wife things like ask to borrow some cash or offer him a morning kiss. He doesn’t seem to grasp that he’s an interloper here. Even if they are accepting him into their relationship, Nat and Jake have had years to create what they have now. Their routines are pretty ingrained by now so getting angry because you aren’t the first one Nat turns to isn’t exactly fair. You skipped out and let your friend take over, you can’t expect to step right back into a relationship 18 or so years later. Especially 3 days after you move back into their lives. During one moment Hoyt even got pissy because Nat asked where Jake was. The three had just finished a hot round of sex together and Hoyt was cuddling Nat. When Nat asked where Jake was (pretty innocently I might add) Hoyt tears a strip off of her for not offering him the “intimacy” he wants. How dare she ask about another man while she’s in his arms?! It really contradicted the whole “let’s do this together and not be ashamed that the three of us love one another” thing they were going for.
Another thing that disturbed me was that Hoyt was always described as having a “cold smile” on his face whenever he was about to go all Dom on her. Using this to describe a moment when the male character is pushed beyond a certain point and decides to punish his sub might be okay. Using this to describe the male character as he interacts angrily with another character is okay too. Continuously using this to describe intimate and loving encounters or dominant sexual acts is creepy as hell (imo).
Something else I found disturbing? Jake’s easy “here you go” sort of passing of the reins to Hoyt when he decided it was time (on day 2) for Nat to be dominated by Hoyt. Here he is standing over Nat and telling her she needs to call Hoyt master and she isn’t to shame him by her actions. If she doesn’t act like the proper sub he’s trained her to be and do as she’s told he’s going to be ashamed of her. He says it a few times during a scene and sure, it was a scene, but it struck a wrong chord with me personally. Especially given the timing. Here Hoyt has just entered their lives again in a completely different context. Nat hasn’t exactly had a chance to compute all of this, as Jake hid it from her and basically brought Hoyt in last minute to let her know the two of them were going to try being her lovers together. She’s already upset and unsure. She loves the Hoyt she knew (because let’s face it the man has to have changed just as Nat herself has changed over the years) but she doesn’t trust that he won’t break her heart again. Jake doesn’t bother to take the time to ease her into anything. They have one night of discussion (sort of) and then boom. Here’s control of my sub hope you know what you’re doing and hey sub, don’t fuck this up or I’m going to feel ashamed. No pressure. :P
Realistically the trust thing wouldn’t just kick in. There’s no way Jake should’ve been demanding she call Hoyt Master this soon in the game and he sure as hell shouldn’t trust that Hoyt know what he’s doing or that Hoyt knows Nat enough to keep her safe because really he doesn’t. Hoyt’s never been dominant to Nat and he doesn’t know her limits or anything else. He’s basically coming in blind and doing whatever he wants to do while Jake (who should know better and be protecting Nat) says go for it. To make matters worse, near the end of the story Jake even states that Nat’s holding herself back (my god woman it’s been a whole week! Why aren’t you utterly in love with him declaring your trust in everything he does already?!) out of spite. Not because she may have legitimate hang ups over the whole Hoyt leaving her pregnant and letting his best friend marry her so he could do his thing, but because she’s just trying to hurt him like he hurt her back then. Fuck you Jake. Nat has a right to feel that way and a right to come to terms with whether she trusts Hoyt to actually stick around this time. It’s been a week! He hasn’t been around long enough to fully unpack. Give her a break and let her build some trust with him. After all, it’s not like she was all on the Jake bandwagon in a week when she was pregnant and foisted on him by her ex. He of all people should understand that Nat needs to build trust and that it isn’t an instantaneous event for her.
At least, in the end, Hoyt admits that he was arrogant to assume that getting Nat to admit she loved him and to screw him wasn’t enough to create that bond he wanted. But still, I was left sputtering a lot at just how utterly stupid it was that any of the characters expected Nat to form any sort of deep emotional trust in less than a week. I believe if Brooke had developed the danger moments into more of the story and left out the crazy expectation of instant trust and mastery, it would’ve made for a much better story.
To start I'm not a big fan of Jake i don't dislike him it's just that I'm not as invested as I am with other characters in desire. I actually did like this book, the sex was very hot and fresh as Hoyt was starting from new. My biggest issue was joe Natalie and Hoyt son wasn't in the picture until 50% into book. He was referred to by characters but you didn't know till then that he was away at College. Only other characters in book Jesse Rio and Clay, other were one liners and didn't stay long. Devlin and his brothers were involved in parts which gives me feeling their possibly next which I'm looking forward to. Great HEA for Natalie Hoyt and Jake.
I must say that Ms. Brooke kept us on pins and needles waiting to find out what was wrong with Jake and Natalie’s marriage. They have been a staple from book one and I didn’t want them to be anything other than happy. So I was floored and ecstatic with the twist that Ms. Brooke threw us in the latest Desire, Oklahoma book Desire Unleashed. Who would dare try to come between the couple that I have adored throughout this series? What secrets were they hiding? Would they be able to move past this hiccup? Ms. Brooke answered all this and more. I thought it was admirable how she even made a story for Jake and Natalie viable as something more than a novella. I mean they were a couple even as the series began and usually what you get is something along the lines of a prequel but Ms. Brooke did more than that. She gave us not only their history but managed to make them stronger together and made me love Jake even more than I had in the past. In Desire Unleashed we learned so much more about the strong dominant man Jake was and is. The depth of his devotion to Natalie was even more apparent as we learned how this couple began even as their lives changed dramatically with the addition of Hoyt. I loved how Jake dominated Natalie in the past but Ms. Brooke brought out a new level of intensity to Jake’s character in this tale. She coupled that intensity with peaks of his insecurity as well as showing us his complete understanding of the woman he married. I found myself swooning and wishing for a Jake of my own. Hoyt was no slouch either. He was struggling with the reality of being able to show the woman he has always loved that affection. He had to learn that loving a fantasy was somewhat different the reality. Seeing the intimacy up close while trying to make a place for himself was handled well by Ms. Brooke. She allowed me to see this strong man accept that Natalie made him both strong and weak. Something rarely understood until you are in the weeds so to speak. I loved that Ms. Brooke did not sugarcoat just how hard it would be to become an intimate trio, especially when the resulting relationships had different beginnings. I mean Natalie and Jake lived daily together and with that comes a level of comfort that Hoyt was just beginning to understand and come to need. And oh to be the Natalie in this Jake and Hoyt sandwich, I mean who wouldn’t want two strong men to love just you. Men who showed the depth of their love with a willingness to do whatever it took to make you happy. I loved that she loved them just as much as they loved her. She struggled to make everyone happy and had to learn even after all this time, the importance of communication. I think this has just become one of my favorite stories by Ms. Brooke. She continues to stretch as a writer and gets better each time. She layered a story full of emotional depth and intimacy along with action and passion. She didn’t shy away from showing the hurt feelings and jealousy that were sure to be an issue. Her brutal honesty made this story all the better for me. I look forward to what she has in store for us in the future.
Jake and Natalie are in an adorable romance for years, but her former flame and Jake's best friend Hoyt has decided he wants to take advantage of the space they have left for him and be part of the family again.
Natalie freaks out, so does Jake, but he's willing to try since Natalie is in love with Hoyt too. There are sexy times and wow those are hot, but what detracts from the story is the slight unnecessary drama and action in this book. WISHFUL THINKING with this book is if the author had focused more on the relationship and the Jake wasn't hanging around in the background so much. It would also have been nicer to not have a freaked out heroine who flip flopped as much as she did, it made liking her rather difficult.
Read this for the: heroine having to be rescued and collapsing quite frequently heroine being a brat and a joyous pain heroes to type with one brooding and the other not one hero learning to seduce and win back the heroine’s trust other hero secure in her love gossipy men
Desire Unleashed is the 9th book in Leah Brook’s Desire Oklahoma series and is a delightful addition to the group. The characters are well drawn and likeable and the story is captivating. Nat and Jake have a great marriage and are more in love now than when they married over 20 years ago. But Jake has been keeping a secret in recent months, and Nat is shocked to learn that he has okayed having her first love, Hoyt, come to live with them, now that he has retired from the Navy SEALs. Jake realizes Nat still loves Hoyt and he is willing to try a ménage. Nat is torn by the fact she still has feelings for her son’s father, but she depends on Jake in a way she and Hoyt never developed. She doesn’t want to hurt Jake and she’s afraid of Hoyt leaving again. But Hoyt has tried to forget Nat and can’t-he’s in the relationship for the long haul. While the three of them work to make a relationship work, dark forces in the town create a threat no one had anticipated. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The author’s exploration of the character’s doubts and fears is superb, and other than a couple of typos, the writing is clean and well done. Expect some spanking and light bondage, but nothing too intense, although the sex scenes sizzle.
My biggest issue with this book is Hoyt joining Nat and Jake's relationship 20 years LATER! WTF!! I hate stories where a couple is in an established relationship and then someone gets added makes me think that one of the people in the relationship isn't really happy. I have a hard time believing that Jake is okay with Hoyt joining them as in previous books he was really possessive of Nat and clearly stated the he didn't share. I also have issues with Nat just going along(yes she had issues with it but she did go along in a short timeframe) as with Jake she was portrayed differently in previous books - I can honestly say this is my least favorite book in the Desire series and I seriously doubt I will read it again.
I wish authors would leave established couples ALONE there seems to be a trend lately with the authors I read adding people into relationships - that SUCKS for the readers that already like the established couple again making it look like one of the partners wasn't really happy.
Hoyt should have been told to take a freaking hike he made his choice when Nat got pregnant keep moving on!
Book nine of the desire Oklahoma series focuses on Nat and her husband Jake for months he has been distant with her and she didn’t know why until he sits her down and tells he’s been talking to Hoyt his best friend and Nat’s first lover and the father of her son Joe. Hoyt has retired from the navy seals and wants to be apart of their family sharing Nat with Jake. Nat has never gotten over the love she has for him but she loves Jake she’s not willing to lose Jake not even for Hoyt has he convince her that they’ll work out he wants this, Jake wants this, Nat does too but she’s afraid to let him in again in case he walks away again. This was a enjoyable and entertaining book to read and had some good action in it, an attempted bank robbery, Nat kidnapped and rescued. This series is perfect for small town hot romance reads for sure.
My thoughts on this book changed as the story continued. About a third of the way through I was not liking the story at all. After that the story picked up considerably. By the end it was worth a read for fans of the series. This would be her most intense book on the BDSM lifestyle. We have a lot of necessary thoughts from the 3 main characters. There is a lot of ancient history to cover to try and make the present believable. It had all the usual elements. New person arrives in Desire. Trouble happens that involves that person in some way. Drama occurs with the people that person is involved with. A Happy Ending for all.
I wasn't sure I was going to like it when I started it but once again, the authour spun her magic and I loved it!!!!
Different histories and experienced together plagued these three. They all had their own doubt's and fears but love and respect for each other allowed them to blend.
It was much sweeter than I would've guessed but watching as Nat and Jake reaffirmed their love while Hoyt found his place was beautiful in so many ways
Loved the story and love the series, another outstanding tale of Desire!
I was actually very disappointed when I saw the synopsis for this book, with the lead up in previous books hinting at the trouble between Natalie and Jake, I was looking forward to a book about them, their established relationship and the love the have together. Plus Jake came across as seriously sexy with his Dom persona. To find out that instead of allowing this couple to be, another man had to be added which I just think is really sad, Natalie and Jake were good enough on their own and didn't need Hoyt. So yeah, didn't enjoy this so much.
Can't believe I'm saying this but "too much sex". Otherwise it was a great story. Loved getting little updates about the other character's too. Especially Erin and Alison.
