Previously published as Deny Defend A Dark Criminal Romance by Lucinda Wicked. If you’ve read that version, this is the same story with a new title and cover.
Snaking through the bustling streets is an unforgiving disease. One that rips away life like the grim reaper during a plague. The city is tainted with cancer-like greed that has shown no whisper of stopping until now. Declan Voss moves throughout life like a shadow- an unwritten ghost set to collect payment from those who benefit from the ones they hold under their boot. After his most recent hit, the world was set ablaze. Both fear and rejuvenation swirled hand in hand like twin comets. Declan has never had shaky hands when collecting payment, but this time is different- there’s an extra obstacle.
Sloane Callahan was known for her skills- prey that had learned how to bare teeth and bite back. And she has caught the scent of Declan. Though she walks a thin line, she dedicates herself to her craft and refuses to let her past repeat itself. As the newly hired protection for the son of Declan’s most recent collection, Sloane doesn’t plan on failing this time. But little does she know, Declan doesn’t plan on it either.

Morally grey MMC AND FMC? Yes please! I've been feral over this news story and this was a fun, quick and topical read. I'd like to think King Luigi is more sophisticated than Declan but I don't think we knew much about him by the time this came out. Sloane is a badass too and I love a morally grey FMC more than anything.
This was a good little shorty story. Lots of mystery and intrigue. The sex was 🔥🔥🔥.
The reason it gets a 3 star rating is because of the writing. I normally don’t have much so say about how a book is written, but this book is too short for this many errors. It completely disrupted the flow of the story.
There’s a LOT of repetition, several grammatical errors, and there are continuity issues. One example being, “I take a step forwards her and grab her chin with my ungloved hand.” But then 3 sentences later, “I step forward and grab her chin, bringing her eyes to me.”
This book has a dual POV, but the Epilogue doesn’t follow the pattern of the book. We have to get halfway through before we know whose POV it is. The Epilogue is also in the book twice and it has two “Afterwards”. I think the second Afterward should be “About the Author”.
Most of the looked is written in past tense, but there are a couple of instances where it switches to present tense.
i went into this thinking it’d at least be a silly read and i’d have a good time. a novel inspired by the current events around ceo’s seemed interesting at the very least, especially when it was marketed in book groups i was in that it was inspired by it, but sadly this novel wasn’t that. it was so rushed and the story barely made any sense. halfway through the book the plot and motivations were barely clear, and not in a like fun mystery way - more a “i forgot what i wrote” type of way. the writing was clunky to read as well, making this 96 page book feel a lot longer, and in desperate need of editing. honestly i should’ve been able to finish this in a day but i struggled so much with it i didn’t want to continue.
I felt like this could have been much more fleshed out, but seems like it was written in a hurry. I wanted to enjoy it so much.
Tons of grammatical and punctuational errors I reported to KU. A few sentences were redundant and started and ended with the same phrase. Past and present tense flip-flopped from sentence to sentence a lot. I had a hard time immersing myself in the story because of these glaring errors.
Overall, if this were rewritten as a full novel and actually edited for errors with more emphasis on character and plot development, I'd probably reread. It just felt awkward.
Fallen Justice by Lucina Wicked was such an intense and gripping listen! The narrators did an amazing job—seriously, their performances brought the story and characters to life in the best way (Declan and Sloane's voices were 👨🍳💋, help I'm swooning over him). I was completely drawn in by the dark, fast-paced plot and that bittersweet twist at the end really hit me.
I do wish there had been a bit more development between Sloane and Declan—I was craving a deeper dive into their connection. But overall, I really enjoyed it and couldn’t stop listening. This one’s a solid five-star audiobook for me!
