There’s no avoiding it. Melena must keep her promise to return the fae device that opens the portal to Purgatory. Except there’s one problem—Kerbasi. How can she go when she has one of heaven’s minions practically attached to her hip? One who will strike fear in the hearts of the fae the moment they realize who he is.
When her shape-shifter cat suddenly gets sick, she can’t delay the trip any longer. Only the fae can help get Sable healthy again. And if Kerbasi tries to cause any trouble while they are there, she’ll just have to find creative ways to keep him in line.
Susan Illene served in the US Army for eleven years and worked as a human resources specialist and an Arabic linguist. She served two deployments to Iraq, and after leaving the army, she studied history at the University of Oklahoma. She currently lives with her husband and two sons.
Melena, the sensor, and her charge, Kerbasi (a guardian) go to the fae city to return the device and to heal a beloved family member who needs fae magic. While this was a short listen it was still a good one.
The thing I love about Melena is that she never lets any set rule keep her from following her own heart. She has a very wise moral compass and an insatiable need to do what she feels is right.
She reminds me very much of Toby Daye (series by Seanan Mcguire), Kate Daniels (series by Ilona Andrews), Mercy Thompson (series by Patricia Briggs), Verity Price (InCryptid series by Seanan Mcguire), Kylie Galen (shadow falls series by C.C. Hunter), Daire Santos (soul seeker series by Alyson Noel), Ever Bloom (evermore series by Alyson Noel), Tessa Grey (clockwork series by Cassandra Clare), Clary Fray (mortal instruments series by Cassandra Clare) and Clea Raymond (elixir series by Hilary Duff).
I love how she's feisty and sure of herself even when others would flee in fear. She's pretty awesome!
I like vegetables, but I can’t stand cabbage. I like meat, but I won’t eat any kind of fish. I usually like dark-haired guys. I don’t like the color orange. I don’t like wearing brown.
I can go on, but that was just to say that there is stuff I like and stuff that I don’t like, without any particular motive: it’s not that I’m prudish or have high moral reasons for most of the stuff I like/dislike.
I’m not wholly ok with PDA and giving/receiving oral sex in public is definitely out of my like-zone.
This series is trespassing dangerously into Anita Blake territory, and I’m not very keen on that. Let’s see where the next books lead.
Just proves some people you can't take out in public.. The laughable tale where in returning the Fae portal to purgatory back and taking her sick cat to the Fae Vet. Just proves that she had to handle herself and the males with her with a firmer hand preferably with a gun in it. Angels have tied her to a guardian of purgatory and he proves he is a very bad boy.. Fluffing his wings at geese in a Fae city, fighting with citizens when told to behave and stay out of trouble. Good thing the cat was feeling well enough to bite his crotch..Kerbasi isn't the only male needing control Lucas is also someone Melena seems to be the only adult in the bunch. Sable is a close second but stealing treats from the counter got her into trouble to begin with. Susan Illene does a wonderful job making her characters come to life and cause all kinds of antics that just make you laugh, she inserts a good dose of sex and laughter.
First of all, any book that let's me visit a place called "Slap And Tickle" is a book I'm going to pick up. As Susan stated this book is "for the fans" and I wasn't disappointed! I really hated Kerbasi so far, and I feel the need to bite my tongue when I say this, but I'm starting to like the little bastard. He is so funny and I have high hopes that at some point in the future, he can redeem hisself. I'm so glad we got a quick pick me up into Melena's world while we're waiting on Susan's next book to come out!
Melena has a sick kitty on her hands, not to mention a less than welcome guardian and a wayward lover to deal with. This novella may only be 58 pages (Kindle edition) but it sure packs a lot in. The main reason to read it though, is because Mel finally gets to turn the tables on Lucas, in a scene that is reminiscent of the time he claimed her (Book 2: Darkness Taunts). Any true fan of the series will not want to miss the answers Lucas gives to her questions. Trust me.
3.5/5 Cute and fun, this is a lightning fast read, that showcasts the ongoing changes in Melena, and how the balance of power in her relationship with Lucas is at last shifting. Lucas was even *gasp*flirty at times! And I loved the amount of snark in this installment. Kerbasi's involvement was a good call which added a very much needed hilarity to the series overall. Recommended.
This series is addicting, adventure, suspense, magic, supernaturals, and wonderful stories. I thoroughly enjoy the comradie between the different types of supernaturals, friendships, and relationships. Don't miss out on this exciting series.
A truly fabulous short story that sits between books 3 and 4. It showcases perfectly the interactions developing between Melena and Kerbasi. I loved hearing more about the fae city, with the politics and game playing that goes on there. Melena and Lucas together are absolutely electric and the pages practically leap out at you. Enormously enjoyable.
