Life Rule #1: Never date your brother’s best friend, especially if he’s a hockey player. He’ll break your heart. Life Rule #2: Never fall for your brother’s other best friend who’s also a hockey player.
I’m a former hockey hype girl, aka a puck bunny. After a big win, I fell for the center who happened to be one of my brother’s best friends. Swept into celebrating, twenty-four hours later, we were in Las Vegas getting married. I didn’t want what happened in Vegas to stay in Vegas. I thought I had my happily ever after.
Two weeks later, he ditched me. Was it love or did my brain temporarily break?
Thankfully, I have a new brain. A mom brain. Because nine months later, I have a baby girl...and an ex-husband who wants nothing to do with us, resulting in me moving back to my hometown—Hockey Town.
Rumors circulate about my fall from grace. When did this cheerleader become a homebody?
When my brother’s other best friend gets traded to our hockey team and gives me a You’ve grown up look, my inner alarm rings. Except he needs my help with a social media makeover...and maybe I could use his. Not to exact revenge on my ex. My brother took care of that.
I was in love with love, but we broke up. But I might have a crush. One the size of a jellybean. He listens instead of giving advice and is helpful without me having to ask. Will my relationship with romance be restored, this time, with my brother’s (other) best friend?

This is a sweet book, and fits well within the Knights series. There are a few glaring items that annoyed me, however. When one of the families has a pipe in their home burst and there’s extensive water damage, there’s a comment made about their savings for a cruise washing away. While that is likely true to some extent, the family likely has homeowners insurance, in which case the damage may be covered. True, there’s the expense of repairing the pipe, and there’s the deductible (and premium increase), but there likely is coverage. No one even mentions the possibility! Ok, that’s not the big problem for me, though. Most glaring are the communication skills of the baby. She’s 23 months old. That’s not even two years old. The kid is fully potty trained and out of diapers (some kid, huh?), based on a comment that FMC’s brother used to change her diapers but now doesn’t need to. She speaks in nearly complete sentences that all the people can understand. At two, a kid can string a couple of words together at a time, has a vocabulary of maybe 50 words (not always pronounced correctly), and is intelligible about half the time. This kid is talking full sentences more like a four year old, if not older. Miraculously, everyone understands her when she talks about seeing a unicorn in a tree and her grandpa holding her up to the first branch. Kids are not small adults. If an author is going to put a kid in a book, at least have the kid act in a manner consistent with the purported age.
For an EXCELLENT military romance book involving a 4 year old and a plot-appropriate discussion of early childhood development, check out Mary Margaret Daughtridge’s Sealed with a Kiss. Well worth reading.
I absolutely love single parent romance and this one delivers! Heidi is doing everything she can to give Bunny the best life she can. While life hasn’t turned out the way she planned, it is turning out the way it was supposed to. The same could be said for Grady. He is back where he never thought he would be but now has the found family he needs. These two are adorable with their push and pull and you won’t want to stop reading. This is a dual pov, clean romance. It is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone novel.
This book has everything that we’ve come to love of Ellie Hall’s work .With a beautiful extra quirk that does work . It’s sound ,it’s profound and so satisfying too… I adored this story so much! It’s a real cute ,with an “I’m not like the other guy “vibe and she’s so , all in with him from the start , he has her heart which is a refreshing start. She gave him a chance to prove that it’s always been him and Trey just got in the way when she went a bit cray cray for a bit …I love the adorable Bunny ,she’s a really cute little girl and round her finger she does curl her uncle and his friend Grady also mummy’s new boyfriend . Now he is a dream and fits right in perfectly in their family dynamics and of course he’s a dream of a player too on the ice and Heidi ,mum to Bunny ,thinks he’s funny ,a dream man ,and feels that in the bedroom he’s swoon with an extra helping of nice. Heidi and Derek her brother along with her mum and dad ,even uncle Stan does all he can to bring up one little girl and take care of her needs in the absence of a cad of a dad ,they are all she needs. Until mummy meets an NHL star ,well more a case of oh there you are, when she realises where her heart lies. Because ,well she’s known him a while ,most of her life , he grew up in their home was there most of the time , sat at their table and he was welcomed in as Derek’s friend and hockey teammate. Who could foresee the hand of fate that would change whose mate he is and that he could one day state that this awesome family is his. It was a blow when Trey her brother’s other friend ,she could not depend , in the end he didn’t want to know after two weeks wed, took her to his bed , they got married in Vegas in a mad twenty four hours crazy dream , she was left literally holding the baby ,but looking back she knew in fact that her heart wasn’t his, she needs to get on with her life and back into the fold of her loving family it seems. Cobbiton is her home and Nebraska Knights their IceHockey team . When Grady gets traded into the team mid season , coach had his reason and it would soon be clear. The boy who practically lived at their house it seemed and who they all held dear. Derek’s best and only friend after the other he did send packing with a thick ear and kick up the rear ,told never to come near. Hometown boy come back to steal the show in the NHL and gel with the family he used to know… I absolutely loved this book! It’s super great ,it really is the sweetest thing,it made my heart sing! A satisfied grin and a great big smile so sublime that Ellie Hall evokes every time . Writing superb, every descriptor verb. Very well written and those adorable characters with their own trait ,you want to turn up in town ,call them your mate ,it’s so immersive, with this awesome storytelling Ellie ,you’re so persuasive.
I hope these Nebraska Knights stories just keep coming. They are fun Romcoms that focus on the Knight Hockey players and the small Hockey Town of Cobbitan. Each story can be read as a stand alone. I love Coach Badaszek who continues to bring new players to his team. He has a way of giving a hockey player a second chance. The stories are clean, have lots of humor and of course lots of romance.
This story is about Grady Federer who has just been traded to the Nebraska Knights mid season. He had been suspended from his previous team and the story behind his suspension hasn't been revealed. Grady grew up in Cobbitan and with his difficult family background, he never had plans on returning to live there. His best friend Derek Rice had made him part of his family while growing up. The Rices had given him a safe place and food on many occasions. Mr Rice was like a father to him and still stayed in touch. When Grady sees Derek's sister serving in a local restaurant, he doesn't recognize Heidi. She grown into a beautiful woman who seems to have a chip on her shoulder around him.
Heidi Rice had left Cobbitan and had worked for the Los Angeles Lions Hockey Team. She managed their social media program but after her very very brief marriage to Trey Dillard, she had moved back to Cobbitan. Trey was on the Lion's team and was also her brother's other best friend. Their hasty marriage in Las Vegas lasted two weeks leaving Heidi pregnant. Now she lives in her parent's basement and her uncle gave her a job at his restaurant O'Neely's Fish bowl. She has no life and is always tired but she has made some rules for herself.
Life Rule #1: Never date your brother’s best friend, especially if he’s a hockey player. He’ll break your heart. Life Rule #2: Never fall for your brother’s other best friend who’s also a hockey player.
Grady would love Heidi's help with his new assignment from Badaszek to work on their social media. He's been keeping a low profile on social media and knows nothing about bringing more attention to the team. Grady would also like Heidi to see he's nothing like her ex Trey. He loves spending time with Heidi and her toddler daughter Bunny. Feeling drawn to Grady will Heidi be able to keep her rules or will she give Grady a chance?
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Heidi & Grady’s points of view
– it is mentioned that a character grew up with an absent & drunk mother (& no father in the picture)
– it is mentioned that a character’s sibling passed in a car accident (past event)
Review:
The only thing I wasn’t quite okay with was how far into the book that it took to find out that Heidi’s daughter’s name isn’t actually Bunny and how she came to get her nickname. I just didn’t really like the name until it was explained and wasn’t quite sure if it was her actual name or a nickname until then.
As for the rest of the story, I enjoyed this fairly light and definitely sweet Easter/spring romcom! I loved getting to know Heidi, her family, and how Grady interacted with them all even before feelings got involved for either of them. I loved seeing that Grady wanted to care for Heidi and her daughter. I loved that Heidi’s family doted on Bunny and that she was clearly loved despite Heidi’s ex leaving them both behind. I also liked that we were kept wondering as to why Grady had to leave his last team until he was ready to open up to Heidi about it.
Summary:
After her ex-husband left her and her daughter to fend for themselves, Heidi hasn’t wanted anything to do with hockey or hockey players. But when she moves back home to live with her parents, there’s no way to avoid it. After all, Cobbiton is known for two things: corn and hockey. And with her brother’s best friend Grady returning to Cobbiton to join their hockey team, Heidi can’t really even go home without some reminder of her past. But Heidi isn’t the same girl she was when she grew up in Cobbiton nor is Grady the same guy who grew up there…
Grady hadn’t wanted to return to Cobbiton, but with getting suspended and the details not looking good it was his only option to accept the trade. Even if he had no idea why his new coach chose to ask for him. At least going home means returning to the family who cared for him when being at home wasn’t desirable. But Grady didn’t expect to find his best friend’s annoying sister Heidi to be not as annoying as he remembered. Nor did he realize that he might catch feelings for her. But when coach wants Grady to create a social media makeover for himself and Grady feels over his head, the only person who might be able to make this assignment a success is Heidi. And spending time working with her to make the posts has Grady falling head over heels for her…
I loved how determined Heidi was to never again fall for one of her brother's best friends. I can't blame her. After all, the first one married her in a Vegas quickie, and what happened in Vegas did NOT stay there, but Trey, her ex couldn't be bothered to take responsibility. Grady must have been the polar opposite. He is steady, kind, reliable, loyal, honest, and everything her ex was not. I was thrilled for all of them when their interactions quickly morphed into a rather smooth and steady slide into family. Grady is everything a book boyfriend should be. Plus he is such a good father figure for Heidi's toddler daughter Bunby, and he even gets along with Heidi's parents who he was closer to than his own. The author did a very good job writing a two year old, which can be a really tough balancing act, and didn't allow the child to totally take over the story. She was kept involved as a central focus of her mother's life as appropriate for a single parent, but was shown as realistically age appropriate. I loved the end of the story where all the HEA is delivered with smiles, hugs, unicorns, and warm fuzzies.
I received a free advance copy of this story from the author via BookFunnel and voluntarily chose to share my review.
Heidi, a former hype girl for a professional hockey team has a couple rules…1. Never date your brothers best friend who is a hockey player. 2. Never fall for your brother’s other best friend. After breaking rule one, she ended up hurt and becoming a single mom.
Grady coming back from suspension gets traded to the Nebraska Knights hockey team in his hometown. When Grady needs Heidi’s help for a social media makeover for his new team. Will Heidi break rule two?
I just love a brother’s best friend and single mom trope, and this one hit the mark. I loved the snarky banter between Heidi and her brother, it is just hilarious. The small town feel and support that Heidi gets raising Bunny. The growth between Heidi and Grady both personal and together is just so sweet.
Even though this is a standalone I really loved the mentions about the other FMCs from the other stories. Such an easy read that could be read in one sitting.
This is the fifth novella book in the Nebraska Knights Holiday Hockey Romance series. It can be read as a standalone. The whole series is pretty amazing. I can’t wait to return to Cobbiton.
Welcome back to Cobbiton and the Nebraska Knights! It’s a little different from the other books in the series and I mean that in a positive way. This story is about a player traded to the Knights mid season. It so happens he's a hometown boy and hooks up with one of two of his childhood best friends. He doesn't want to be there and isn't getting played, but his friend's sister catches his attention. Too bad she is "OFF LIMITS" for him. Or is she? Fate has a quirky sense of humor. This is a totally family book that is hockey adjacent. Yes, there is rink action, players we know from other books, and familiar places. But there are new fantastic characters, post high school dynamics that go along with small towns, and all revolves around the family off his best friend. The family that took him under their wing when his own fell apart. The family of the woman he has come to love. *SIGH* It's lovely and a story I stayed up too late because I HAD to see how it ended. Spoiler Alert...The ending was WONDERFUL!!! Don't miss this terrific addition to an ongoing series that is glorious!
This story has so many feels and the characters are just - real! Heidi returns home with her baby after her divorce fails and is a struggling single mom and knows how lucky she is to have her family. Grady is her brother’s best friend who has made it. He’s been traded to his hometown hockey team and never wanted to come back. They have known each other their entire lives and the chemistry comes out of nowhere for both of them. Her daughter takes to him instantly and she worries about that, all the single mom worries. It was well written to have the worries always present for Heidi, but it didn’t put a downer on the story. It takes a bit longer for Grady’s story to come out as to why he was suspended then traded. His upbringing was awful, and he has overcome that to be his own person. To see their individual shared pasts and how they saw things differently was very interesting. I enjoyed seeing them come together and remembering that she is a mom first and Grady stepping up for the little girl was so sweet!
I’ll admit I’m probably a little biased—I have a soft spot for hockey romances, and I’ve been following this series for a while now. While The Ex Puck Bunny isn’t my favorite installment, it was still an enjoyable read overall.
One of the things I really appreciated was getting to revisit familiar faces from the series. Seeing the returning characters, their interactions, and how their stories continue to weave together added a fun, cozy layer to the book. That shared universe always gives me a sense of connection and continuity.
As for the main couple, I liked the chemistry and dynamic between them. Their relationship had its ups and downs, but watching how they came together in the end made the journey worthwhile. Even though the storyline didn’t stand out as much as others in the series, it still offered moments of warmth, growth, and just enough swoon to keep me engaged.
If you’re already a fan of the series or just love a light hockey romance, this one’s still worth picking up—especially for the familiar faces and the satisfying happily-ever-after.
Such an engaging story. You won’t want it put it down. This story is complex, sweet, simple, and bittersweet all rolled together just like life is. Heidi is a single mom, divorced after a swift marriage that was not thought out. Now the sole support of an adorable soon to be two year old. To make ends meet they are living in her parents’ basement and she is working two jobs. She’s worn out but so happy to be Bunny’s mom that everything is worth it. When Grady, one of her brother’s hockey playing friends, shows up at the diner where she works things begin to change. Suddenly, her no dating - especially hockey players rule is starting to look a little shaky. And when Grady asks for her help, how can she refuse especially after she knows the two secrets he is trying to hide? I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
Heidi has been burned by one of her brother’s best friends and she is not looking for it to happen again. Grady has taken a forced break from hockey and is now back in his hometown playing for his hometown team. I loved watching Heidi own up to the fact that she was a mean girl in high school and being a single mom has really changed her. She never saw Grady coming and the result is full of chemistry, heat, a bit of angst and the kisses are fire but this still stays in the no spice zone. One of the things I really enjoyed, characters from previous books in this series make a few cameo appearances.
Every time I think this town can’t make more room, a new player joins the Knights team or a new woman settles into Cobbiton, but for this book both protagonists have come back to town somewhat recently! Grady is a midseason trade and Heidi got caught up in some tough times, forcing her to move back home!
Heidi, “The Brat”, has moved back to Cobbiton after going out on her own for college, which ultimately led to be an ‘ice kitten,’ a Vegas wedding and divorce 2 weeks later! As much as her divorce was unsettling, the kicker that brought her home was of the “Bunny” variety! Her fast-paced marriage resulted in a beautiful little girl, whose nickname is Bunny! Heidi does everything she can to provide for her and Bunny, including working at her Uncle Stan’s Fish Bowl and that’s where the story really starts. She rolls at her eyes at her brother, who is a frequent customer and the man he joins one evening.
The man who initially turns his back to most of the patrons and lays low is none other than Grady, her brother’s childhood best friend! Grady has recently been traded to the Knights from the Generals under supposedly suspicious circumstances. While doesn’t initially realize his waitress’ identity, it all comes around better than expected!
The more interactions that these two have with each other, the more they realize they aren’t as alone in the world as they first think. I absolutely adore that they often dismiss what their core trope is, seeing how it’s my all-time favorite! I also love the aspect of found family between the Rice family and Grady! It’s so beautiful and touching! Ellie Hall continues to step up her hockey game! So, I will see you back in the fall Cobbiton unless I forgot to account for something – which is entirely possible!
I had so much fun getting lost in The Ex Puck Bunny. Some books are just a pleasure to read and this one was perfect. Bunny is a darling and I love all the support Heidi has for raising Bunny. Grady is truly swoon worthy! The banter between the two, and Grady's determination to prove he is not Trey, is another highlight. It is always good to see Coach and the Knights. I know I would love to be part of this town. I will not gush on any longer. Just be sure you read this wonderful book. Ms. Hall has a real winner with this book!
It sounds like Heidi wasn’t a nice person but life as a single mom living in her parents’ basement after her divorce and her ex signing away custody of their daughter has changed her. Grady was a little too proud to publicly acknowledge diabetes. It would have saved him from the made-up scandal. But then he wouldn’t have come back to his home town and met his best friend’s grown up changed sister. They both given a second chance at their careers and love. Heidi’s little daughter is adorable and provides a lot sweet and funny moments.
This is such a cute story. Heidi has vowed to never marry another hockey player, nor would she marry one of her brother’s friends. She has already done that and has a precious child to prove it. When Grady gets traded to the Knights after a scandal that has benched him, the fireworks between them start from the very first time they meet again. Grady is her brother’s other best friend. Heidi shows her grudge against hockey players immediately. I suggest you read their lighthearted story.
This is such a fantastic story; I didn’t want to put it down once I started reading. Heidi is divorced with an adorable little girl who is almost 2 and wants nothing to do with hockey players. Grady is a hockey player and her brother’s best friend. I loved the story, the flow of it and the characters. It had humor that made me laugh and smile, so sweet and swoony, such a great story and addition to the Cobbiton and the Nebraska Knights Hockey series.
I don’t read many Easter themed romances, but this was cute with the Easter bunny, a sweet girl nicknamed Bunny, and the “puck bunny” references. It all worked together!
Grady and Heidi were adorable together! I especially loved him with Bunny. It was a great family book.
While part of the Nebraska Knights series, this book can be read independently.
Content: clean (no language, mild violence, kissing only)
I love it when there is truly a silver lining to one's troubles. Heidi is back home, raising her daughter alone after her ex husband wanted nothing to do with them. Grady is back in his hometown because of something that git him suspended from his beloved hockey and then picked up by the Knights. You'll just have to read this very sweet story to find out about all the good that comes out of their previous problems. Another great story by this author.
I loved this book so much. It was a great clean romance and I loved it. Both main characters had been hurt, they were childhood friends of a sort. And this book shows how life can humble someone then give them the greatest gifts. It was awesome and I want to read more from this author. I loved that there wasn't any s3x scenes because I'm really tired of that. Seriously, how many times do you have to imagine people doing it. This was perfect.
I really enjoyed Heidi and Grady’s romance. She is a single mum, and not willing to fall for another of her brother’s friends but Grady is totally different from her ex and I really liked how they helped each other overcome their issues. This is a delightful series but each romance can be read as a standalone and will definitely draw the reader into the story.
The Ex Puck Bunny ~ Nebraska Knights by Ellie Hall.
Blurb: She has one rule: never fall for her brother's best friend. He has one goal: to prove that love is worth the penalty.
Another great book to add to this Hockey series by Ellie. Beautifully written with wonderful characters that come to life while reading. This is because of the way Ellie introduces us to her characters through her descriptive writing.
This is Heidi & Grady, he is her brother's other best friend, drafted mid-season and she is a single mum, from another best friend of her brother, and also her EX. I highly recommend this book to all.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Easy-to-read, Entertaining, Happily Ever After, Page-turner, Realistic, and Wonderful characters
Another adorable story involving the Nebraska Knights! "Never say never..."
I love how Heidi tries to resist Grady, but they're drawn to each other like electromagnets! Grady is the sweetest, and I love how he takes such good care of Heidi and BB, and even Mr. & Mrs. Rice. Just the sweetest!
Fun story with a small town and small town neighbors. Bunny is a wonderful addition to the story. I enjoyed getting to know the families and the friends and the not-friends (maybe). I enjoyed reading as Heidi and Grady grew in love and learned to overcome old hurts and relationships.
Loved this one so much! I love that we’re getting all the holidays with this sweet hockey series-it’s the best! Loved Grady & Heidi together. I loved the respect he had for her as a single mom. He was so adorable with her daughter. Love the Knights team!
The Nebraska Knights series of holiday standalones gets a fun Easter story this month. I enjoyed this single mom + brothers best friend story, laughing a lot along with the characters, specifically at the almost two year old Bunny's antics. This is a cute fun quick read. Enjoy!
Adorable! I love sweet, brother's best friend romances. This is a fun rom com that's an easy read and full of loveable characters. The storyline makes this book hard to put down. It's a well written, very entertaining story that checked all the boxes for me. I loved it!
This brothers best friend romance was fabulous. I loved them not wanting to fall in love but unable to resist each other. The viral videos were very fun and little Bunny was just precious.
Heidi tried the marry your brother’s friend and got an amazing little girl and a divorce out of it. Then comes Grady, his other best friend and her little girl (and parents) love him too. Great story and love the triple epilogues!
Super cute romcom! If you’re looking for a clean, non religious romcom, this is it! It’s part of a series but I didn’t have any trouble keeping up with the story or the characters, if if I hadn’t read any of the others (I did but it’s been a while). Definitely recommend it.
