Robert Thorogood

Robert was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland and read History at Downing College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he toured with the university's student comedy troupe Footlights in 1993 and was elected President in 1994. Soon after leaving Cambridge, Robert set up a theatre company that toured small theatres and schools, the highlight of which was a production of Molière's The Miser that he directed and acted in alongside Robert Webb, David Mitchell and Olivia Colman.
Robert wrote for many years - selling scripts to the BBC, ITV and independent film companies - but before 2011 the only script of his that was actually broadcast was a Radio 4 afternoon play called From Abstraction about the life of Paul Wolfskehl.

The pre-wedding party of Sir Peter Bailey, a wealthy resident of Marlow ends in tragedy when the groom, who was in his sixties dies, after being crushed underneath a cupboard in his study. This was to be his second marriage, the first having ended in divorce. He was alone in his study with the door locked from the inside when the cupboard fell on top of him resulting in his death. His two adult children, friends, and acquaintances were in attendance at the party as were the members of the Marlow Murder Club - Judith Potts (after receiving a personal telephonic invitation from the now deceased Sir Peter despite not being previously acquainted) and her friends Suzie Harris, dogwalker and now also a radio host and the vicar’s wife Becks Starling. Judith is convinced Sir Peter’s death is no accident despite there being no obvious evidence of foul play. Judith being Judith decides to investigate. As Judith, Suzie and Becks proceed with their sleuthing, they find multiple people in and around the deceased gentleman’s life who have the motive to kill him. With multiple suspects to look into and plenty of surprises and red herrings along the way, The Marlow Murder Club have their work cut out for them. They find an ally in Detective Sergeant Tanika Malik, whose own doubts about the case are ignored by her superior officer, who returns after a long leave of absence and conveniently sidelines her.
Having previously read and enjoyed Robert Thorogood’s The Marlow Murder Club, I was eager to read the next installment and I was not disappointed! I loved the friendship and camaraderie between Judith, Suzie and Becks. Seventy-eight-year-old Judith is a force to be reckoned with! Observant, fearless and sharp- she still loves her crosswords and swimming the Thames in the nude (despite the winter chill). When she isn't out actively searching for clues with her friends, she diligently studies her makeshift incident board with her “thinking scotch”, trying to figure out how the different pieces of the puzzle fit together. Suzie is smart and comes up with the most creative (at times hilarious, but effective) ways to get information. Becks is perceptive and her knowledge of the community and everyday matters proves to be a great asset. The subplots with Judith and her cryptic crosswords, Suzie’s struggles and Beck’s keeping a secret from her friends and family are expertly woven into the primary narrative, without distracting from the core mystery of the plot. The mystery is very interesting and though the identity of the culprit might not be completely unpredictable (though I did change my mind a couple of times), I truly enjoyed the ending and was surprised more than once by the revelations that gradually came to light as the plot progressed.
With a good dose of humor woven into its cleverly crafted plot, consistent pace and cast of interesting characters, Death Comes to Marlow by Robert Thorogood is an entertaining and absorbing read. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to fans of the cozy mystery genre. Those who enjoy Agatha Christie mysteries would enjoy this one. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

But, an intriguing phone call is about to change all of that.
Sir Peter Bailey has invited Judith to his “drinks party” planned for the afternoon prior to his wedding to his much younger nurse, Jenny Page.
But, the soirée reveals tension between Sir Peter, and his two grown children, Tristram and Rosanna, who don’t approve of his bride to be. In fact, before the afternoon is over, the groom to be, will be found crushed to death in his study-a room locked from the inside.
The Police don’t believe it’s murder, but Judith disagrees.
Looks like the ladies have their second case……and it’s a locked room mystery.
This is book #2 of the Marlow Murder Club, a COZY mystery series by Robert Thorogood, creator of the BBC Murder Mystery series, Death in Paradise.
Our main protagonist, Judith Potts, has her own very unique personality and yet book two was very reminiscent of an Agatha Christie’s “Miss Marple” story, so if you enjoy those, you should enjoy this series as well!
As a bonus, you might even learn a thing or two about how the clues to crossword puzzles are written-and how to go about solving them too, as Judith thinks she has deciphered a hidden code in the crosswords written for The Marlow Press. (A fun sub plot)
If she has, will it lead her to the Murderer?
I enjoyed the first a bit more-it was more character driven-but the mystery aspect is probably stronger in this one!

I thoroughly enjoyed Robert Thorogood’s The Marlow Murder Club last year, so I was excited to read his newest head-scratching caper featuring fierce and feisty septuagenarian sleuth Judith Potts and her mystery-solving sidekicks, vicar’s wife Becks and dog-walker Suzie. I’m happy to say that it didn’t disappoint!
This time Marlow’s renowned Sir Peter Bailey calls Judith out of the blue inviting her to a pre-wedding party at his mansion the day before his nuptials to nurse Jenny Page. He seems a bit nervous Judith notices and when he’s later found dead in his locked study, she has no doubt that he invited her to the party to solve his own murder!
While suspicion falls on everyone from his son, daughter, ex-wife, wife-to-be, gardener, and various others, everyone seems to have a potential motive, but they all have airtight alibis too! Was Sir Peter Bailey’s death an accident or murder? After all, he was the only one with a key to his study, and it was found in his pocket inside the locked room.
Unswayed by the utter impossibility of the evidence proving his murder, Judith once again uses her sharp mind and the unique insights and talents of Becks and Suzie to assist DS Tanika Malik, whose recent demotion has taken her off the case that her boss has written off as an unfortunate accident.
Who killed Sir Peter Bailey? In the fashion of a great Agatha Christie novel, Thorogood has written another clever and twisty mystery that worked all my gray cells and still ultimately fooled me! I love Judith’s spunk and intelligence. Honestly, you can’t pull a single thing over on this woman! It was nice to see Becks and Suzie’s stories fleshed out a bit more this time around as well as they’re each finding their own success outside of Judith’s formidable shadow.
I listened to the audiobook, once again perfectly narrated by Nicolette McKenzie, while reading along on my Kindle, and it was a great way to immerse myself in the story. I highly recommend the audio!
It’s a delightful series that will be followed next year by the third installment The Queen of Poisons and has just been announced to be in development for Masterpiece Theater on PBS. I know I’ll eagerly be looking forward to both!

Death Comes to Marlow is the second book in Robert Thorogood's Marlow Murder Club Cozy Mystery series.
I had so much fun with the first book, The Marlow Murder Club, so I was anxious to get my hands on this one. I felt the cast of characters was very fun and I was anxious to embark on another case with them.
This mystery kicks off when Judith, along with her best friends Suzie and Becks, attend the pre-wedding festivities for Sir Peter Bailey at his stately-mansion on the Thames.
Sir Peter called and invited Judith himself and even though they aren't technically friends, or even acquaintances for that matter, the way he frames his invitation...well, she just can't say no. Gathering her troops, Judith is sure that the night will be one to remember.
As it turns out, Sir Peter is marrying his nurse, Jenny, and not everyone in the family is happy about it. There's even a bit of a scene made by Sir Peter's son, Tristram, voicing his opinions. Oh, the drama!
That little spat pales in comparison to the what happens next. A large crash from inside the house, draws party-goers to investigate. Shockingly, they find the groom-to-be crushed by a giant wooden cabinet in his office.
Sir Peter doesn't survive. The police are notified, and since Sir Peter was discovered in his locked office, they do not suspect foul play. It was a horrific accident, pure and simple.
Judith disagrees. She refuses to believe their accident theory. Something doesn't feel right and she's determined to get to the bottom of it. Judith, along with Becks and Suzie, begin their own investigation.
It's clear the police won't get it right without them.
I did appreciate how quickly Thorogood kicked off this story. There's not a lot of filler in the beginning. Before you know it the ladies are at the party and the juice is being squeezed.
I loved that we had a classic locked-room mystery on our hands; one of my favorite tropes. I also liked the drama surrounding Sir Peter's family and the issue of a large inheritance being at stake.
For me, I did find that it dragged a bit around the halfway point. I felt like their investigation was slowing down and there was a little too much focus on side-plots involving the ladies than I necessarily cared for.
I wasn't really engaged with those aspects and was always just wanting to get back to the mystery of Sir Peter's death. Because of this, the pace was off for me.
With this being said, I still enjoyed the characters and the cozy feel. I also really enjoyed all the classic-feeling mystery elements, like the detective denouement at the conclusion. That was really fun!
In short, even though this wasn't quite as fun and engrossing for me as the first book of the series, I will absolutely be picking up the next book when it releases.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series The Marlow Murder Club , and was happy to catch up with the ladies, they are great characters. Judith is the leader and very determined to catch the killer!
They hear a crash at the mansion on the Thames and things get dodgy. The go about collecting clues, doing a stakeout, finding codes, and interviewing people. Basically, what the police should be doing, but aren't interested.
The mystery was okay, but went on and on too long and there was just too much questioning going on to the point that I was losing interest.
It was entertaining enough, but wasn't as good as the first.

The Marlow Murder Club is back and ready to investigate their first locked room murder!
Aftera mortifying an invigorating skinny-dip in the river Thames, Judith receives a phone call from Sir Peter Bailey inviting her to a party at his estate that afternoon to celebrate his wedding the following day to his much younger fiancée and nurse, Penny Page.
During the party there's a loud crash, for all to hear, coming from inside the house and Sir Peter seems to be missing.
When his locked study door is broken open, the groom-to-be is found crushed to death under a large mahogany wall cabinet.
The room was locked from the inside and the only key is found in Sir Peter's pocket.
Based on the lack of evidence of foul play, the police see no reason to investigate further.
Judith disagrees and is convinced Sir Peter has been murdered.
It looks like The Marlow Murder club has just taken on its second murder case...
I loved Book 1 in this series, The Marlow Murder Club and it's nice to see Septuagenarian Judith, dedicated dog walker Suzie Harris, and the local Vicar's wife Becks Starling come together determined once again to solve an "impossible-to-solve" murder.
Without causingtoo much drama distractions to the main storyline, each of the ladies has something happening that gives additional texture to this one overall:
* Judith solving, not creating, masterful crosswords...
* Suzie can't find time to 'walk-the-dogs...
* Becks is keeping secrets from her friends...
I hope you're curious!
With all the shenanigans, shifty characters, and a police force that continues to look the other way, who else can the folks in Marlow rely on to solve another murder in their community except this trio of female super-sleuths?
Another fun and entertaining read in this series that I highly recommend! I'm looking forward to Book #3.

It’s winter and deep, dark January and yet Mrs Judith Potts STILL wild swims during the day to give her zing and pep! When she returns home after mistakenly startling both a swan and a family on the banks of the Thames her telephone is ringing. It’s wealthy Sir Peter Bailey who is getting wed tomorrow and invites Judith to a celebratory drinks party that afternoon. Their subsequent conversation prickles if not ignites Judith’s interest and curiosity so despite the greater allure of afternoon tea and crumpets at home, off she goes accompanied by her friend Suzie Harris. Becky Starling being the vicars wife and all, is already there and dressed jolly smartly too. Somethings afoot and so the Three Musketeeresses are on high alert particularly after an altercation between Sir Peter and his son Tristan. Shortly after this a loud crash is heard and to everyone’s shock and horror the body of Sir Peter is found beneath a very large cabinet inside a locked room. How intriguing. Obviously, DS Tanika Malik investigates along with the three friends, also obviously. So, it all boils down to olive oil, it certainly will become twisty and there may be cross words too. It doesn’t start well for Tanika when her SIO bubble is burst when DI Gareth Hoskins returns to work from sick leave and resumes the position and it may pop Judith’s bubble too and, he’s not terribly bright either, poor lad!
I enjoy this one a lot more than the first maybe because the characters feel more familiar and more like pals but mostly because I think the plot is way better. This one really does feel very reminiscent of the Golden Age mainly due to the jaunty style it’s written in but which is especially evident in the ending that is not only ingenious and clever, it’s definitely in the Agatha vein.
I love the Marlow setting which is easy to picture and there are some really good small town nods that are enjoyable. The dialogue is crisp and funny at times and the characterisation is good throughout. Poor Tanika with these three especially Judith who is a tour de force. It’s a good intriguing puzzle of who killed Sir Peter and why and how, there are pieces that don’t fit together but never fear, they’re on the case even if they have to go rogue. The novel jogs along at a brisk pace, there’s never a dull moment, it’s full of fun and plenty of snap, crackle and pop.
Overall, it’s a pleasure to be back in Marlow with such a tasty plot.

The dialogue is crisp and funny at times and the characterisation is good throughout. Poor Tanika with these three especially Judith who is a tour de force. It’s a good intriguing puzzle of who killed Sir Peter and why and how, there are pieces that don’t fit together but never fear, they’re on the case even if they have to go rogue. The novel jogs along at a brisk pace, there’s never a dull moment, it’s full of fun and plenty of snap, crackle and pop.
Overall, it’s a pleasure to be back in Marlow with such a tasty plot.

My first book by this author and how intriguing to find that he also writes one of my favourite TV shows, Death in Paradise. I loved the way this book started with septuagenarian Judith wild swimming in the nude in the River Thames. Amazing.
Judith and her friends Suzie and Becks make up the Marlow Murder Club and pretty soon they come up against a murder to investigate when the bridegroom at a pre wedding party is found dead under a large piece of furniture. It is a locked room mystery but this does not put Judith off at all and they set to work on finding out who did it and how.
I loved the characters and enjoyed the story and the way the author kept the book going at a smart pace so that the pages practically turned themselves. I will now have to go back and read the first book!

It was just as Ian was pointing out the exact tree stump where he'd once seen not one but two kingfishers that a naked seventy-eight year old woman climbed out of the river right in front of him and his family, ran a few paces along the bank - her entire body oscillating wondrously - before she threw off a flamboyant salute as she jumped back into the river, her legs tucked up under her so she could bomb back into the water with a massive splash.

I was so pleased to see this trio of ladies back, along with acting DI Tanika Malik. Three women of varying ages and different social backgrounds have been brought together by their sense of social justice and a certain amount of noseyness. Although Tanika repeatedly keeps telling the indefatigable trio to stay out of police business, they repeatedly inveigle their way into the investigation, and then after a change in circumstances Tanika finds herself asking for their help.
Very soon after Sir Peter's death, an idea occurred to me - 'What if . . .?' which eventually turned out to be correct. I had the who right, but had no idea about the how.
Judith is my favourite character. She can be quite overbearing and autocratic, but she has an amazingly sharp and inventive mind honed by both solving and compiling cryptic crosswords.
This mystery is evenly paced and cleverly plotted, with scattered pockets of humour. The characters are every bit as fresh as they were the first time around and there are two subplots interwoven with the main one involving Suzie's career, and Beck, the vicar's wife, keeping a secret.
Death Comes to Marlow is an entertaining and absorbing read.

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY!
The Marlow Murder Club (retiree Judith Potts, Suzie the dog walker, and Becks the vicar’s wife) team up once again when Sir Peter is murdered at a party in celebration of his upcoming wedding. Found alone inside his locked study, how did the murderer do it? Who would want to kill Sir Peter?
Cozy mysteries usually don’t wow me. Too predictable and heartwarming for this psychological thriller junkie, they generally fall flat. However, The Marlow Murder Mysteries have really captured my full attention. I have fallen in love with Judith, the whip-smart, resourceful, and hilarious octogenarian!
I listened to the terrific audiobook of The Marlow Murder Club and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the second installment. However, I could only get the ARC on Ebook of Death Comes to Marlow. I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy it as much without Nicolette McKenzie’s fabulous voicing of Judith. Never fear, it was just as fun in print!
Dare I say that I enjoyed this mystery more than the first?
I highly recommend this series. It looks like #3 - The Queen of Poisons will be released in January. I can’t wait to catch up again with this terrific amateur sleuth team!

I enjoy British mysteries, and thought the first book of this series was pretty good and so I thought I would give Book 2 a try. Well, that did not turn out that well. The Marlow Murder Club is a group of 3 women led by Judith, a 78-year old retiree who loves both creating and solving crossword puzzles, Suzie who is a dog walker and now a host on Marlow FM, and finally Becks who is the 40-ish wife of the local vicar. The three blended well together to solve the first murder, but it seems they went their own way until they are reunited to solve the murder of Sir Peter Bailey. Sir Peter summoned Judith to attend a day-before-wedding party because he was afraid his son might kill him. And, lo and behold, Sir Peter dies during the party with no witnesses to the crime. Enter the ladies who were all at the party and begin collecting clues and trying to find the murderer. Finally the police arrive but the ladies continue to meddle. And this goes on for over 300 pages. The police officially refuse to believe it is a murder which is a convenient plot device to allow these three ladies to continue meddling in lives and collecting clues. But, by about page 30 I knew who was the murderer, and apparently I am smarter than those ladies of the Marlow Murder Club, so much so that they, especially Judith, becomes aggravating and irritating. It is a locked room mystery that does have its baffling moments, but as creative as the plot was in Book 1, this second effort was disappointing. I will say that the solution to to how the locked room murder was ingenious but it just was enough to raise this one to a disappointing 3*** effort. There is a Book 3 coming out shortly, not sure if I will read that one.

Sir Peter Bailey is throwing a drinks party the night before his wedding to Jenny Page and Judith has been invited. When during the Party a sudden crash is heard, and Sir Peter is found crushed to death in his study by his cabinet. The door is locked, but when the Police arrive at the scene, they don’t think that his was murdered, they think that he took his own life. But Judith thinks differently and wonders why would Sir Peter kill himself the night before his wedding? Judith and her counterparts of The Marlow Murder club, decide to do an investigation of their own, with the annoyance of the SIO investigating the case of this locked room mystery.

I have not read the first book in the series and at the start of this, there was some reference to the first book. So, at first it took me a while to realise what was going on. I would advise to read the first one first. But as I delved further into the story, I found this well plotted and well-paced addictive read. 4 stars from me.

This is the 2nd in the Marlow Murder Club mystery series. And, even though this could be read as a stand-alone, there is too much background in book 1, “The Marlow Murder Club” that should be read first. Doing so provides readers a better understanding of all the main characters. Also, because the author has been very successful with his BBC One, ‘Death in Paradise’ series, it was no surprise to this reader, when ‘The Marlow Murder Club’ was also made into a successful mini-series. Which I truly enjoyed!
In this story, Judith Potts, our main protagonist gets an unusual invitation from wealthy, Sir Peter Bailey to attend his pre-wedding party. When Judith makes a joke about his concerns for inviting her because there is a chance for another possible murder for her to solve, she never intended for that foretelling to come true.
But what happens when it is a locked room mystery? How could someone have murdered the person with the room locked from the inside, and the only key to the room being in the victim’s pocket?

Halloween Bingo 2023
Not quite as enjoyable as the first book in this series, but still quite acceptable. Sir Peter Bailey is getting married for a second time and Judith receives a last minute invitation to the pre-wedding celebration. She doesn't really know the man and, of course, is suspicious. Sure enough, after a blistering row with his son Sir Peter is crushed by an enormous heavy bookcase in his study. Judith, Suzie and Becks are among the group of guests who break into the locked study to discover the body. Surely it must be a horrible accident, right? He was alone in a locked room when he died.
Well, if you read Agatha Christie, you know that it's entirely possible to pull off a crime like this! I was reminded of Hercule Poirot's Christmas and was rapidly putting the pieces together, although I hadn't pieced together all the details. But Judith's little Poirot type summary at the end nailed down the facts.
So, not so charming as Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club (which I think is the inspiration for this series), but definitely reminiscent of Christie, which is not a bad thing!

This is the 2nd book in the Marlow Murder Club Series. I wasn’t sure I was going to like these books when I read the first one. I did like the 1st book enough to give the 2nd a try and I am glad that I did. As is often the case the 2nd book is better.
The mystery starts out with Judith taking a naked swim in the river. All is well until she encounters a dead duck. In her frantic attempt to get away from the dead duck she inadvertently gets between a mamma swan and her babies. This starts a chain of events that has her swimming for home much sooner than she planned to.
As soon as she has sat herself by a warm fire she gets a phone call from Lord Peter asking her to a party the next day. She asks him why he would want her there since he does not know her. Peter tells her he was impressed by how she solved a murder. Judith quips that she hopes no one will be killed at his party and his answer piques her curiosity.
The Marlow Murder Club meets at the party the next day - and wouldn’t you know it? There’s a murder.
It was a good read! Thorogood got into the groove of the characters in this one. Cozy murders are dependent on characters you like so much that you want to keep coming back to visit.

А ще й спочатку довести поліції, що сера Пітера Бейлі таки вбили, нехай його смерть і скидається на нещасний випадок, бо все не так чисто у цій справі.
Разом з подругами Бекс і Сузі, активна сіньйор-вумен проводить слідчі експерименти, шпигує та вистежує. А ще складає та розгадує кросворди, плаває в Темзі, обговорює сусідів та п’є чай. Вельми насичена старість, аж потроху починаєш їй заздрити.
Роман прекрасно написаний, легко й невимушено, і захоплює настільки, що можна втрати лік часу. але при цьому читається дуже швидко і, як я вже казала, надто швидко закінчується.
Окрім самої Джудіт, ми починаємо трішки більше дізнаватися про її подруг. І Бекс, і Сузі тут не просто собі тло для того, аби на контрасті показати, яка головна героїня метка, розумна і уважна. Кожна з них має достатню кількість ефірного часу, умовно кажучи, аби постати перед читачем не картонкою, а повноцінними персонажками, яким легко співчувати, переживати за їхні долі і навіть намагатися дати поради, як викрутитися із певного незручного становища.
Парочка другорядних персонажів-кросвордистів – це просто моя любов. І моя мама, яка читає виключно детективи, також їх відмітила особливо.
Для себе зрозуміла, що жанр cosy crime – це прекрасне рішення, коли хочеться чогось теплого, але не приторно-солодкого, простенького, але односкладного, і достатньо наївного, але не такого, аби закочувати очі на кожній сторінці.

I'm sorry, the second book in this series was a big disappointment. I absolutely loved the first book. I think it was because I was getting to know the characters. Judith is such a free spirit. It was great reading about her in the first book. The first book also goes into detail on how Judith, Becks and Suzie all became friends and I really liked that. This book wasn't terrible, but in my opinion...incredibly boring. I had to stop my eyes from trying to skim through paragraphs. There was a lot of unnecessary detail and conversation. The book could have been a lot shorter. I didn't even care who the killer was anymore by the end. I know it doesn't seem like it, but I really am trying not to disrespect the author. (If the authors read the reviews, however, they'll know what the readers want and don't want.) The first book was so great. If a third book comes out, I will check it out. I like the characters. The story just droned on too much. Happy reading. 🦆🍷🍬

After the utter delight that was “The Marlow Murder Club” with its trio of three intelligent, funny, non-compromising women who take matters into their own hands when their hometown Marlow is plagued by a string of murders, I knew I had to pick up whatever sequel(s) Thorogood decided to pen.
“Death Comes to Marlow” picks up half a year after the events of book one, and things seem to have returned to normal: Judith still enjoys her daily swims in the Thames (even though it’s January; this woman is tougher than me fr) and setting her crossword puzzles and Suzie still works as a dog walker though she has recently taken up voluntary shifts at the local radio station. Out of all three, Becks is the only one who seems to have changed, sporting a new diamond ring on her finger as well as receiving mysterious phone calls. Beck’s change in habit is intriguing, though not more so than the ominous call Judith receives from Sir Peter Bailey, inviting her to a party the day before his wedding because he fears… what exactly?? Naturally, the Marlow Murder Club are more than interested to investigate, even more so when during the party, they witness a crash and find out that the groom-to-be has been crushed to death. Judith calls foul play, but how can his death be any more than an accident when the room was locked from the inside, the key was in his pocket and every single person who might wish him harm has a bullet-proof alibi?
What can I say, I LOVE a clever locked-room mystery. If they’re done right and well-written, I will stay up way too late to find out who the murder is. Did I stay up way too late trying to finish this one? YES. In fact, I got so tired, I had to stop and go to bed at the 85% mark just when the murderer was revealed, arghh! But I simply couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer!
That I didn’t go to sleep earlier is a testament to Thorogood’s talents as a storyteller. The Marlow Murder Club’s second outing was just as delightful as their first; this novel’s narrative is so tightly kept, without a scene out of place, with every character’s actions driving the plot forward without any superfluous nonsense, that reading this book felt like a breeze on a hot summer’s day.
The returning characters of Judith, Suzie, Becks, and DI Tanika felt very familiar and it was a joy to spend time with them. I appreciate that Thorogood kept their unique traits while simultaneously granting them some form of development (especially Suzie and Becks) which only added to their depth. I find that with cozy mysteries, the protagonists are too often written a certain way only to stay that way throughout a long period of time, becoming almost caricatures of themselves.
The murder mystery of this novel reads like a true Agatha Christie story. There are a lot of suspects – though not so many as to lose oversight – and even more red herrings the MM Club is chasing. Thorogood really plays up the mystery part of this story, as the locked-room or “impossible crime” mystery did not only keep Judith and her friends on their toes but me as well. The reveal is incredibly clever and thought-through and more than worthy of an adaptation as an episode of Miss Marple or Poirot.
The writing style is witty, it feels very breezy with some zing to it, as well. There were two to three instances where I thought the author was ostensibly thinking himself very clever for coming up with sentences like this one for example:
These were luckily just outliers, as Thorogood usually doesn’t lose himself in repetitive statements such as this one.
Another thing that irked me, which is also a huge pet peeve of mine, is characters referring to the murderer as “he” even when they don’t know the murderer’s gender. During one scene, Judith and Tanika even talk about a woman they think could be the suspect while still saying stuff like: “What if he pushed the cabinet on Sir Peter”, “but he couldn’t have…”. Then, in the next sentence, they are back to using the woman’s name again. It makes no sense. I realise it might be a force of habit but come on… If “Chicago” taught us anything it’s that women can be murderers, too (he had it coming!).
Nevertheless, this was a fast-paced, enjoyable, very narrative-focused outing for the Marlow Murder Club, and I will happily read more books detailing their adventures.

3.5 stars. I read and enjoyed the first of this series. This one started strong and I very much enjoyed the friendship between the main characters, but the mystery fell a bit flat. I'm still going to read the next one when I want to read a light cozy

After a recent disappointing reading experience I decided I needed to turn to something by an author I already knew; something that I was cautiously optimistic would provide good entertainment.
And I got that in Death Comes to Marlow, the second volume in what I'd consider a "village mystery" series. Septuagenarian sleuth Judith convinces her two sidekicks from the first book, dogwalker Suzie and vicar's wife Becks, to assist her as she investigates a locked room murder.
Despite their similarity in age, Judith is no Miss Marple. She slips into the Thames from her boathouse daily for a brisk swim in the nude; instead of tea, she enjoys the occasional (make that daily) glass or two or three of scotch; and instead of knitting, she creates cryptic crosswords for national publications. Suzie and Becks are each, shall we say, "differently colorful", with distinctive personalities of their own. Were it not for their periodic need to solve crimes, these three would be unlikely companions.
These books are no more and no less than what you might hope for, which is to be well written and distracting and fun. The audio narration by Nicollete McKenzie is as close to perfect as you could want. My mood was definitely elevated by the time I'd finished.
BTW, I had the general idea of how the killer pulled off the locked room mystery, though the specifics, when revealed, were much more clever than what I'd been thinking. IDK how long Robert Thorogood can sustain this series, but these books have definitely been welcome additions to my "feisty old ladies" shelf.

Too silly for me. Can’t think of many redeeming qualities in this book, it is wellwritten, there is that, but the main character annoyed me and the murderer’s identity is not that difficult to guess. Overall I find it lacks milieu and atmosphere.

I recommend you stop after the first novel in the series while you’re still happy enough. Thursday Murder Club, this is not.

Джудит не ме разочарова и този път. Още с първата книга бях сигурна, че двете ще станем добри приятелки. С тази история несъмнено си затвърди позициите като любимата ми дилетантка-следователка и ненадмината в създаването и разгадаването на мистерии.
Несъмнено тази книга ми донесе много по-силно усещане за връзка с Поаро и кралицата на криминалния жанр - Агата Кристи ( която по случайност, до колкото такива изобщо съществуват, днес празнува небесния си рожден ден ). "Смърт в Марлоу" оставя усещането, че гледаш Агата и Поаро в изкривено огледало ( брилянтен женски образ, написан от мъж), но без негативното усещане, че това вече си го чел.
Вече нямам търпение за новите ни срещи!
Несъмнено тази книга ми донесе много по-силно усещане за връзка с Поаро и кралицата на криминалния жанр - Агата Кристи ( която по случайност, до колкото такива изобщо съществуват, днес празнува небесния си рожден ден ). The second book in this series is just as fun, although I don't think it's quite as good as Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series. I enjoy the three lady detectives in Marlow, my favorite being Judith Potts, who swims (nude?!) in the Thames all year round! Can one really swim in that river in the winter?! This locked room murder mystery was well plotted, though I had the culprit pegged early on- I was just a bit off on the how! Looking forward to number three.

these ladies are just delightful and i love each of them so much🥹!!! i also loved that this was a locked room murder mystery because in my opinion those are the best when trying to figure out whodunit and howdunit. regardless of the fact that right before the end, i was able to predict whodunit, that did not detract from my enjoyment at all because it really was hard to predict whodunit correctly due to the constant guessing and mysterious clues. all in all this was a solid murder mystery.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book (The Marlow Murder Club) in the Marlow Murder club series, so was excited to read this book on its release in the new year.
I was left disappointed at how boring this book was and how it follows a similar storyline to the authors other books, someone is killed in a locked room, a group of potential suspects but how did they do it? It seems impossible but really it isn’t too hard to work it out.
I really wanted to like this book but was left disappointed and I am not sure if I will bother with the third instalment. I’m sure fans of the author will enjoy this book, but this one is not for me!
