Gah, this book made me want to scream. Nicky was an intern at her family business two years ago. She had a crush on her boss Sam and they had a fling, then he started dating other women (and bringing them to the office) so Nicky ran away to Denver. In a classic plot twist, she finds out she is pregnant then miscarries.
Present day she runs a consultancy practice (I think she's a forensic accountant but I don't think the author knows what to call it) in Denver. Her boss Sam is now CEO of the family business and needs her help, someone is stealing from the company and he wants her to investigate undercover as an efficiency expert. Of course he can't just say that like a rational human being, he has to act like a jerk and threaten to carry her home over his shoulder etc.
This was my problem with this book TBH, most of the men are tools. Sam has 'issues' with commitment because his parents got divorced and so he never wants to settle down, but he thinks to OK to have sex with Nicky whenever he feels like it. Nicky's grandfather owns the company - he is such a sexist pig hat he wouldn't even let Nicky work for the company. Sam thinks that's ok, he Ellis Nicky at one point that if she had been a man she would have been the CEO instead of him because she's so clever! Nicky's brother Cody is just a drip who acts like a five year old and tattles to Sam. To be fair, the women aren't much better.
The business theft issue WA really good, too good for the novel and it was wrapped up half way through the book. The rest of the novel was spent in a pathetic push-me, pull-me between Sam and Nicky. He wants sex, she wants lurve and babies. But the attraction is too strong yadda yadda.
And then, after Nicky goes back to Denver, for a legitimate business reason, she gets blackmailed by her grandfather into spending the day with Sam interviewing a replacement for the embezzling employee and suddenly they jump into bed together. No lead in, no explanation, I thought I'd skipped a chapter.
When Sam has a change of heart it's so sudden I nearly got whiplash. And it all wraps up in five seconds flat. Even though it was free I feel cheated.

I was looking for a quick, light read and this fit that, but...
I was so disappointed as this did so many of the contrived plot points and character actions that I have come to despise in contemporary romance. Can't romance books be written without the female biting her lip? I lost track of the number of times I rolled my eyes and I'm surprised I didn't strain an eye muscle. I found I really didn't like Sam and Nicky was just so-so. It seemed like most of the book centered on what Nicky was wearing. The supporting cast felt cliche and flat. By the time I finished my reactions ranged from ugh, contrived, cliche, silly, please don't go there, etc.
The sad part was, if the author had moved away from the cliche and contrived there was the potential for a decent read as Ms. Morgan does write well.
So I'm still searching for a contemporary romance that will remind why I used to love this genre.

The blurb showed great promise, until I found the actions of both characters questionable and inexcusable and the games that they played juvenile and more suited to teenage shenanigans than adults facing up to a painful past. I'd expected that the big revelation of a miscarriage would have been a turning point and that Sam would have had a lot to ask for forgiveness for (which he didn't quite), but Nicky's desperation for him made it all too easy...and cheapen the entire deal for me. Give me characters with a more solid moral centre at least, when tackling a plot like this.

Yes these can be read as a standalone. It is it really worth it? I was disappointed in the way they jumped around everywhere. Everyone seemed to walk out of the room without finishing their thoughts. Nicky and Sam are two of the most self centered people I've ever met in a book. It was like they wanted each other but didn't at the same time. The story line with the embezzlement could have been a key to a great story line but it just fizzled out and ended. The ending was so confusing I didn't know what was going on!
Good news is if you were ok with this book the excerpt they give you at the end of this book to Erin's book sounds good.

I quite enjoyed the characters and the whole idea for the plot. I hadn't read about people planning buildings before, nor of someone who is able to determine where finances are going and how they may be squandered.
Loved the ending but battled with the back and forth on again, off again between the main two. Nicky and Sam both seem to play dirty and their physical relationship was a little too detailed! A relationship first built on physical attraction and only this is an obvious recipe for disaster.

Slow
I loved the cover for this book, but the story just moved incredibly slow. The characters fell a bit flat for me. They really weren't all that likable either. I grabbed this book hoping it would keep me occupied on a very long car trip, but I ended up watching more scenery than reading.

Juvenile writing. Fling in the past, resulting in pregnancy (has NO ONE ever heard of contraception?!?!). She miscarried and that remains a secret for awhile once they run into one another again. I'm realizing that I don't like the characters in this writer's books. Not sympathetic, not strong, not likable.

I've only read book 6 and this one book 3 and not in order and wasn't lost. I did like book 6 better because both characters worked well. In this one, I didn't care much for Sam and how he treated the h two years ago and now.
Two years ago they had a brief 6 week fling and how he broke it off was like a teenager would do. Here he is a man in his early 30's and I never cared for him much after that. Now they are forced to work together and he is still a jerk. Plus, I wanted to h to not fall into his bed all the time, more hard to get would make me happy.
Lovemaking outside of marriage, bedroom door mostly shut - heat rating barely 2 out of 5 with mostly talk of anatomy parts.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, little on romance, surprised who the thief was, some suspense and mystery, and tiny amount of steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you some tidbits to decide whether to purchase. It's a good story and well written. (ljb)

A great read

So this book jumped around a lot. Emotions are all over the place and the ending didn't flow. Its like there was something missing before the last two chapters. I love the story idea but something is definitely not right with the story line.

Out of the 3 books that I read from this series, this was my least favorite. The author seemed to be reaching on this one.
Nicky and Sam's relationship seemed to be all about passionate sex between them and nothing else.

I, usually, love Leanna's stories. This one might be the exception since it's a little too PC for my taste.
The heroine never called the cops for his threats of kidnapping her whether she wants to go or not. That, alone, is too far off-the-wall for me.

I feel like a chapter or two was missing from this book. Sam & Nicky went from just taking, to sleeping together without telling how the relationship progressed. It was confusing.

Great ending!
Nicky and Sam had a hit and miss relationship complicated by Sam's commitment issues. Luckily, he woke up before he totally ost the relationship!

I honestly don't know where to start. This started off with such potential, a little cliche but potential. Apparently the author wanted to create a book with all the cliches of the contemporary romance novel and center it around juvenile characters that acted more like teenagers then 26 and 30-something. That deserve each other because neither were very impressive or particularly interesting.
I still don't understand why every outfit deserved a paragraph of description where the only character that should have noticed such details didn't have her own chapter and not much in the way of anything. This leads me to point out how incongruent the characters were to their actions. Nicky was sure to get run over with advise by her step mother and that seemed like an interesting dynamic. However, she never did and the grandfather did loads more than the step mother. Also the graphic scenes could use sensuality but were not unbearably bad, just not very steamy.
As with everything, there should always have the bad with the good. Despite the contrived plot points the author has a nice flow to their writing. It was easy to read and nothing was overly confusing or nonsensical. I wouldn't read another romance of this caliber by this author but if she tried a different genre or idea I might consider it. I would think with her attention to family without the distraction of a romance could make for a good drama. On that note this author times moments right for maximum emotional impact of dropping bombshells on other unaware characters.

This book was just OK. I liked the writing but the story really bugged me. Nicky had a fling with Sam and he treated her badly. Then 2 years later they are thrown together again. Nicky acts like she can't even function because her lady parts are so hot for Sam. And all of Sam's internal dialogue is focused on getting Nicky back in bed. I love the Montana Bride series. This is Sam and Nicky's story, Sam and Nicky had a thing going on when she was an intern in the family business 2 years earlier. Well she hightailed it out of Montana two years earlier when she decided Sam was not who she thought he was and she was in a situation she felt he could not be trusted in. (Can't give the story line away....)
Sam comes to Denver to ask her to come back to Montana to help him find who is skimming the books and do it so no one knows what she is doing. Will she fall back into his arms? Will he want her there?
This is one really good read! I highly suggest this book and right now while i is free it's a no brainier to pick it up!

Okay, there's a reason for the two stars: drinking and sex. I just can't really promote that kind of read for Christian readers. But to be honest, I thought that the writing was great. The dialogue was very convincing. The characters were realistic and well-built. The story continued at a good pace without feeling rushed or "stunted." It had the elements of a wonderful story, but I just cringe at the whole premarital sex and the wine drinking. I just hope that Ms. Morgan will write cleaner books in the future.
