Fool's Gambit #2

Over the Edge: Alternative Cover

Rate this book
Garrett Larson doesn’t take breaks. But after one too many late nights at the law firm ends with a trip to the hospital, Garrett finds himself on a mandatory vacation back in his hometown. As a couples’ vacation spot and engagement destination nestled in the Hudson Valley, Hartsfall, NY, is a beacon for romance and true love. To Garrett, Hartsfall is a constant reminder of why he ended his music career as the bassist for Fool’s Gambit to pursue a more practical lifestyle. When his old bandmate’s little sister, with her disarming humor and teasing flirtations, rolls into town with a secret in tow, he’s forced to confront why he left in the first place.

Evelyn Mariano is a devoted daughter and the friend who is always, always, perfectly fine. She’s normal, except for the fact she’s spent the last five years concealing that she’s also pop sensation Lyla West. With the deadline for her next album looming, the future of her secret in the balance, and inspiration at an all-time low, Hartsfall is the perfect town to help her get lost in someone else’s love story. Evelyn isn’t running away from her problems; she’s relocating them to somewhere more scenic.

Evelyn doesn’t trust herself when it comes to love. Garrett doesn’t trust himself when it comes to her. But what’s the harm in a little songwriting between friends?

so after sitting on this for a few days a perusing some of the other reviews that i found i really agreed with i think im settling on a 2.5 rounded up for this one unfortunately.

i was super excited about receiving this and even ran to get on On the Rocks (which i really enjoyed) completed prior to diving in and i do believe that may have been a mistake as i set myself up with some expectations for this one.

before i start with some of my issues i want to say that i really enjoy marja’s writing, i think its beautiful and that she has a way with words and imagery especially. i love the way she describes her characters and how she sets scenery.

the concept of this hannah montana-esque double life was so intriguing and pairing it with brothers former band mate/bestfriend was everything, the execution however is where things lacked. was this a bad book? no not necessarily. garrett and evelyn were precious, but that just simply wasnt enough.

a lot of my rating stems from the only issue i had with OTR, the length and pacing are atrocious. it took forever and a day to get anywhere and anything done in this book. internal monologues dominated this book and not in a fun way. there needed to be more doing instead of thinking. there were a lot of side plots that just did nothing but take me out of the story even more.

i dont want to sit here and spew a bunch of negative things, i think there are a lot of people who will enjoy this book but unfortunately no matter how much i wanted to or tried to i was not one of them. i do look forward to giving the third and final book in this series a try after it gets released, im very curious as to how avery and wes will work things out.

not sure how to review this one!
I love these characters, and there was a lot I enjoyed about the story.
My expectations were high cause I loved On the Rocks so much!

I think the characters/story/framework was there, but the execution fell flat for me.
I think with another round or 2 of editing, this would have been a 5⭐️ read!

My issues were with the pacing, repetition of phrases/thoughts, & small bits that just didn’t make sense.

LOVED On the Rocks, excited to read Evelyn & Garrett’s story 🥰
a secret pop star & her brother’s former band mate?? Love this combo

✨ARC REVIEW✨

2.75✨

After loving On the Rocks so much, I am shocked at how I am feeling towards this book. Where I couldn't put OtR down, I found it really hard to pick this one up.

I want to start off by saying that I do love Marja's writing. My rating is not due to her writing, it's just the overall execution. Will I continue to read this series? Yes...and that's because I loved On the Rocks that much!

This Hannah Montana-esque storyline had HUGE potential to be such a fun and drama-induced story. But we were given a lot of inner dialogue that added more fluff than depth. I wasn't on the edge of my seat, I was bored.

What I did like:

I enjoyed the beginning of this story. Initially, I was so intrigued and loved the double life storyline. I loved that this was a bandmate's sister trope.

I loved the wholesomeness of Garrett and Evelyn. I thought they were two adorable people who just felt lost and stuck in life but they had each other.

What I didn't particularly enjoy:

The pace of this book was off for me. It was way too long and full of too many words. I wanted more action and less thoughts. There was too much going on.

I felt the storyline of Evelyn going to a tourist town of love just disappeared. She's there to write but we get one or two scenes and that's it. I just expected so much more from this storyline. I was expecting some Daisy Jones kind of scenes.

I liked the idea of her exploring the town with Garrett but it felt more random than helpful. It just didn't feel like any of it actually helped her get inspired.

I liked the fake dating storyline. We needed it to give them a push but I just think I didn't fully connect with them enough to be obsessed with their chemistry and relationship. I wanted more. They just fell flat for me and I am bummed about that. Garrett bothered me a lot at times because he came off as rude where I think it was supposed to be flirty banter. I wasn't fully feeling it for him.

We had a lot of side storylines get thrown in that just made the story even longer. Were they unnecessary? For me, yes, but someone else could easily enjoy them considering there are a lot of 5 stars on here that did.

I don't want to beat a dead horse with the negativity. There were a lot of pros and a lot of cons for me. I just wish I was captivated more. I wish I loved these characters more. I wish I loved the tenderness of these characters more. I wish I didn't feel the need to skim a lot by the end.

I wanted a heartfelt moment with Evelyn and Drew. I actually couldn't stand Quinn or Oliver and could have done without them in this book. I think the whole storyline with Garrett's mom was great and added the depth we needed for his arc.

At the end of the day was this my favorite book? Probably not. Some will ABSOLTELY LOVE THIS and I hope you do. I'm still a fan of Marja and I will continue to read her work!

Thank you so much to Marja Graham for the arc copy! I am really excited for what you have coming next!

i finished just in time for release day!!!

if you don’t read indie authors, you’re severely missing out. this book was everything i could’ve asked for in a romance. from garrett being her older brother’s best friend, and being completely down bad from the start, to the two of them getting weaved into this fake dating ploy and skating the line of tension between them, it was honestly made just for me.

evelyn and garrett were like two pieces of a puzzle that needed to fit together to finish the bigger picture. they started off on a miscommunication and a bit of hostility towards each other but being together in his small hometown, they melted away each other’s walls and became just what the other needed.

i had so much fun with this book and i’m definitely going to have to go back and read the first book in this series. marja is so incredibly talented and i’m very thankful i got an ARC of this one 🤍🤍🤍🥹

"I don't think I could make you up if I tried to."

If Marja writes it, I'll read. Simple as that. And this was a MASTERPIECE! If you love Hannah Montana and brother's friend vibes, this is your book!

overall rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
spice: 🌶️.5
blush rating: 🍅

Garrett, our hard working lawyer, who left Fool's Gambit and his passion for creating music to and something stable after living an unstable one himself. so when he pushes himself too far one day, he finds himself in the hospital... and the one woman who he can't have being there to make sure he was okay... and when his boss tells him to take some time to reset, he goes back to his hometown. With a surprise he wasn't ready for.

Evelyn, or as the world knows her, Lyla West, is a hard loving romantic, who wears silly graphic tees and wants to make everyone feel supported and loved whilst sacrificing her own happiness and feelings. She escaped to good ol' Hartsfall, a small romance fanatics dream town, to find her inspiration to write a new album, but what she found instead was her brother's ex band mate and her kinda friend, Garrett is here too...

As Eve and Garrett spend some time together, with Gar showing Ev around his hometown and learning the secrets of it, they slowly feel sparks between them, but inevitably try to deny them. when tuning her piano turns into driving into town to creating Google calendar invitations (because Garrett is a control freak, I love you Gar) to having to finding themselves in a fake dating situation hehehehe.

Gar and Eve share the best banter! Garrett is just a moody, silent lover who loves chess and staying organised while Eve wears her silly shirts and makes everyone feel lighter around her. So when the tension becomes too much and they just 'have' to kiss to fake people into thinking they are a real couple... *giggling* and then the ONE BED GAHHHHH!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED, how Garrett would start to feel possessive of Eve and wants to always be around her, especially with her best friend and ex being in the same town and being together, he wanted to make sure Eve didn't feel like she had to do it alone! he silently loved her and when she needed it, her loved her out loud!

I was so proud of Evelyn's growth in this book. She went from being obsessed with how everyone would take the news of her being Lyla, that she couldn't let herself write, but she felt safe and free with Garrett around and he helped her see how amazing she is. They really are meant for each other!

I loved how even though Eve got scared of how quickly her feelings were developing for Garrett but he was showing her he was all in, even left HIS JOB because she made him realise e didn't want to do a job he HATED anymore. And he showed her that it's okay to be loud and honest and that he was all in! I mean... these two wrote and album together! Like! SWOOOOOOONNNN

They have my whole heart, live in my brain rent free and have embedded themselves into my soul... They are just so precious and wholesome and just so beautiful. The spice rating may be low, but let me tell you, the spicy scenes are so worth the wait because these two are HAWT! My favourite scene is when Ev puts paint on her lips and kisses Garrett's face and tell him that he looks like hers.

Thank you to Marja, for being an amazing friend and trusting me to be a BETA and ARC reader for this book! I love them and you so much and I can't wait for what is next!

BRB I'm going to make this book my entire personality, I think my husband is tired of having to listen to me talk about it 😂
The whole slow burn fake dating trope is my new favourite and I'm kind of upset I read this as an ARC because now I have to wait to read the next one. Evelyn and Garrett are super cute and the face painting scene (and the authors art!!) had me grinning like a fool

Thank you to Marja Graham for graciously selecting me as one of her ARC readers, I am honoured!

I want to begin by saying how beautiful the story was and how well-rounded the characters were. They had their flaws and imperfections but were so loveable at the same time. It was a long story but definitely worth it—I got swept up in it so easily and adored each twist and turn.

I also loved how it was a story not just of love and romance but also of friendship and self-discovery. Even at 30 life is uncertain and decisions can seem paralysing.

Overall, I absolutely adored this and I will be custom ordering a t-shirt with I HEART OVER THE EDGE soon enough :)

🌶️🌶️

This wasn’t just a romance book. It was a book about finding yourself, learning to love yourself, despite your flaws, and knowing your worth.

This book was so beautiful, I had a hard time moving on each time I put it down. I took my time reading it because I couldn’t imagine rushing through it and missing out on all of the little details or savoring it the way I did.

Garrett. Poor, sweet, baby Garret. His childhood was so rough and it hurt my heart to heart about what he went through and why he is the way that he is now. Why he’s so hardworking and hell bent on doing well at his job.

Evelyn wore her heart on her sleeve and I loved that about her so much. She and Garret really balanced each other out in the best ways possible. I loved that she had no problem adjusting to him and his needs, just to continue spending time with him.

The Hannah Montana aspect was what drew me in to this book, but the story, the writing, the characters, they kept my attention and now have a permanent place in my heart 🥹🫶🏻

Thank you so much to Marja for this ARC!!!

Thank you so much Marja for providing me the ARC ♡.°୭̥

Over The Edge ARC Review

i was very fortunate to receive an ARC of Over the Edge by Marja Graham. All opinions are my own and given freely. ❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️/5

content warning: discussions and depictions of financial exploitation, alcohol use, childhood neglect and an absent parent, mentions of depression and anxiety, mentions of cheating – not involving a main character, a character being admitted to a hospital, sexually explicit content.

“i only care about the man with his arms in an embrace around his instrument. he looks up and catches me staring—i don’t look away because i can’t. not when he looks at me like i’m the only person in the room. in the universe.”

after reading on the rocks, i was patiently (not really 🤭) waiting to find out who book two would be about out and collapsed when i found out it would be evelyn and garret!!!! though this is part of a series, i don’t think it’s necessary to read the first book, but one would definitely benefit from being introduced to some of the background characters. that being said, marja really hit it out of the park again with this book. honestly, of marja wrote a it, lol read it!! this was such a beautiful the story and i loved how well-rounded the characters were. though they both had their flaws and imperfections, they were so loveable at the same time. marja did an amazing job of balancing the swoony moments with heartfelt themes like self-discovery and second chances.

evelyn and garrett have my whole heart. they are just so precious and wholesome and just so beautiful. i instantly fell in love with them. the chemistry and banter between them was perfection! they really balanced each other out in the best ways possible. and i loved that evelyn had no problem adjusting to garrett and his needs, just to continue spending time with him. they just fit together so perfectly! the google calendar invites were everything to me! and the fact that the entire town was meddling to get them together was absolutely hilarious!

i really loved getting to know and fall in love with these characters!! i cannot wait to read the final book in this series! thank you so much for giving me the chance to read over the edge early! ❤️

I commented on how tender On the Rocks was, but I didn’t know what I had coming. I’ve never read a couple so tender as Garrett and Evelyn.

This book felt so safe and cozy I never wanted it to end. These two had great banter without it being based in hating each other. They cared about each other the whole time and it was so precious.

The way that Marja writes her descriptions of people is art. I mean “Sharp cheekbones and a long, narrow nose with a flat tip, like whatever master sculptor was diligently chiseling him accidentally chipped off the end.” ??????? Is that not incredible????????

I love all of the characters in this world and I can’t wait to return.

Going to look at Marja’s Instagram every single day to revisit the art of the face painting scene at the end because it’s GORGEOUS and it makes me smile to think about.

Huuuge thanks to Marja for sending me an ARC of this, I’ll cherish it forever

First of all, thank you to Marja for the advanced copy of this book. I saw her post on Threads teasing a “Hannah Montana-esk book” and knew I wanted to give it a read. With that said, I am pretty disappointed.

I just simply struggled to enjoy this book. I think there were just too many words…. like so little happened in this book and yet it felt SO long. I don’t like writing bad reviews but I just have to say this fell so flat. There wasn’t any tension between the characters and I honestly found everyone annoying.

There was so much potential for a sweet story here but even the whole FMC hiding her fame thing was short lived. Our MMC found out like right away…. I don’t know, I just didn’t enjoy this one.

Not off to a good start with books this year… This is my second one star read of the month! Hopefully we only go up from here.

This book had so many tropes within it, there has got to be something in here for everyone. It was almost like the author could not pick one and stick with it. Theres fake dating, one bed, secret identity, meddling grandmother, small town, this list goes on and on! I

Overall, it was a good story of love and music. I will be honest and say that I skimmed over most of the book to read what was in quotes so I can just read what the characters were saying to each other. There was a lot of internal monolouge within the characters that I just found to be mundane. There were also a couple of instances where I thought that things could have been omitted - like with Lana for example.

There was some funny banter and secret longing that kept you waiting for more. The spice was in the last ⅓ of the book and the HEA was as to be expected.

5 ⭐️ 1.5 🌶️

10/10, five stars, I loved it, no notes.

As a music girlie myself, I absolutely loved this romance about two musicians. Garrett left the music industry years ago, but finds himself again while working with Evelyn, his old bandmate’s younger sister, a talented songwriter who hidden her identity. Watching these two fall in love while both in vacation in a small town was absolutely adorable.

I definitely recommend for anyone who loves a slow-burn, he fell first, forced proximity, with a splash of fake dating involved!

I am FLOORED. I’ve not felt this enamored by a book in awhile! I have so many new “favorite things in books” that I didn’t know were things I loved until reading this lovely story. My kindle has never seen so many highlights in one book.

Marja’s writing is so romantic, reading her words are like listening to the world’s greatest love songs.

As a lorde x jack antonoff melodrama lore lover, this story HIT HARD. I was at the edge of my seat and had the hardest time putting the book down.

**ARC REVIEW: POTENTIAL SPOILERS**
Bonus: First five star read of the year!!

Can I just say.. Would have 1000% finished this book in one sitting, but had a headache the day I started it. LOVED IT though.
Also, after certain events/context given in the story.. I feel like reading book one would probably be necessary for some of the context regarding other characters, but that’s just my fault for reading out of order.

Won’t give all of my thoughts, but figured sharing a handful of favorite quotes would be perfect.

1) “If anyone had to show up for me, I wanted it to be her I just didn’t expect it to ever happen.”

2) “Ev, the town literally counts the number of couples who get engaged there. I think it called me single in no less than fourteen languages.”

3) “Music is the voice I’ve relied on so many times when I couldn’t find the right words to express how I feel.”

4) “Never hide part of what makes you special. You helped me be brave with that big heart of yours.”

There’s banter, music, meddling friends/family, reconnection, the list goes on. Feel free to check it out!

I really enjoyed this! This was my first book by Marja. This is the second book in an interconnected standalone series, but it’s not 100% necessary to read the first. However I thought that reading the first in the series would be helpful to get better backgrounds of the characters. (I’ll be starting it soon)
Marja’s writing is so beautiful, the descriptions of scenes and emotions were so well thought out and so well executed. The characters are raw and believable and are truly perfect examples of real people. They were super well fleshed out and honestly I could read more stories about Garrett and Evelyn. I cant wait to see what she does next!

Thank you to Marja for the ARC!!

This is my first read of Marja and color me impressed. This was a slow burn that shockingly helped me a little out of my months long reading slump! In most of my reads, the FMC always have more identifiable characteristics, but the author wrote Garrett a little too personal so a lot of my highlights and notes were from his POV. I loved the bisexuality representation, it was so subtly done that made it feel normalized—the bare minimum truly, but amazing nonetheless! Also, the endometriosis representation also slayed, two points for my queen Marja! There was also such a building of tension that bordered between sexual and intimacy, it was done so perfectly I felt so immersed in the relationship like it was my own. The smut was soft and quiet in a way that matched the relationship and the character’s personalities, it flowed well and developed the romance into the novel. Author sure knows how to write a brooding man without him being a straight asshole! Also, Garrett having a vasectomy was quite literally the hottest part of the book, like okay reproductively reasonable king! And the piano scene where she’s plays a song and he… yea devoured that.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Atrocious book cover, sorry not sorry. BUT this was really entertaining, I just wish some conflicts at the end were left for us to imagen how it will go, because with those books it's always so obvious that the last 10% are about making everything fit in a perfect happy end which just dampers the high of a good read. Little corny, but either way - 8/10.

PS: The smut was not it 😭

3.5/5 ⭐️

I enjoyed this book. I liked the relationship between Garrett and Eve, especially the dynamic they created together. One of the things I liked the most was the way they connected through music, something that turned out to be very special and cute. I also found it super cute how they shared activities through text messages, and how, even after being together, they still kept that habit sometimes. The development of the characters felt genuine and unhurried, which made their personal and couple growth completely believable and realistic.

“You’re it. I’ve known it for so long but I don’t know how to change who we are to each other. I guess, if you’re reading this, I figured out how.” - Garrett ✨

My thoughts:✨😭

This is my first book by Marja and I have no doubt how amazing she is at making this story so good, I'm not a big fan of slow burns but this book made me want so much in every chapter that when there was some closeness I felt thousands of butterflies in my stomach that I couldn't control. I am fascinated by the way the various problems, fears, anxieties, and worries of the characters are dealt with, the delicate way they are exposed without avoiding the reality of how these fears and insecurities can take us away from those we love.

Let's talk about 𝑮𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕. 🎻
A character who touches you and is able to make you connect with his emotions in the clearest way I've ever felt. I think I wanted to hug him more than a thousand times during the book, his personality, so serious and yet so charming, you will love him with every fiber of your heart, because deep down I think we all deserve a Garrett in our lives, someone who thinks of you and looks after you like you put the moon in the sky.

Now Dear 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒚𝒏, 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒚𝒏, 𝑬𝒗𝒆...🎤✍🏼

Definitely a girl who is always thinking about the people around her, careful with her actions and with a great fear of bringing those she loves the most down with her, which means giving up what makes her happy to protect those she loves the most and to see them happy. So bright, laughing and always seeing the best in people, saving rays of sunshine even when it's raining outside.

I’m so thankful for the opportunity of reading this ARC and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.💕

I had the chance to be an ARC Reader for this book and i want to start off by saying thank you !!

I was very excited to get to read about Evelyn and Garrett’s relationship. It was such a cute and easy read that helped me get out of my reading slump.

Although i really liked it there were a lot of side-stories going on that were personally not necessary but overall really enjoyed it and i cannot wait to read the third book !!

Absolutely loooved Garrett and i think everyone deserves one in their lives !! 🥰

Calling all Slow Burn romance readers!! The longing gazes, the emotional connection, the banter, and the tension are what this Slow Burn romance is made of! The spicy scenes were oh so worth the wait! This was my first Marja Graham book, and it will not be my last. Evelyn and Garrett 's chemistry is strong from the beginning and only got better. I loved the story building about their connection, their respective struggles, and the friendship between Oliver, Quinn, and Evelyn. Without giving too much away, I loved seeing the happy ending but also still getting to see them connect and figure out what they need individually to be better together.

This can definitely be read as a stand-alone book because Marja did such a great job in the first few chapters story building. I will say with the mention of Evelyn's brother and pieces of his story, I think reading On The Rocks will strengthen the readers' ability to be in the story even more.

Thank you, Marja Graham, for a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

🎵 ARC Review 🎵

Marja, I'm so in love with this book - I can't believe I haven't started reading your books sooner 😭💗

This was not just a romance book - it was a book about friendship, self-discovery, and loving yourself despite your flaws. Marja, I had such a great time reading this book because it was so well written and such a lovely book. It made me feel as if I was right there in the small town of Hartsfall with these characters.

Garrett, our hard-working grumpy lawyer who left Fool's Gambit and his passion for music to find a stable life after his time as a rock star. So when he finds himself not feeling well, his boss wants him to take some time off to rest and return to his hometown. When he returns home, he slowly starts to feel like he can breathe again but then the arrival of Evelyn surprises him.

Evelyn or as the world knows her Lyla West, his a romantic by heart – her love for graphic shirts supporting everyone else and not caring about her happiness and her feelings makes me want to protect her from everything. She is such a sweet angel and her being a romantic and loving romantic comedy or being there for everyone – you fall in love with her immediately!!

As Eve and Garrett spend more time together and Garrett shows her his hometown it was the sweetest thing Garrett did. I loved the relationship between Eve & Gar, you could see how both of them slowly opened up to each other the more time they spent together. I love how both characters had their own flaws and imperfections.

I was so proud of Evelyn's growth in this book. She went from being so obsessed with how everyone would take the news that she was Lyla that she couldn't let herself write, to feeling safe and free with Garrett around, and he helped her see how amazing she is 🥺💗

I loved how even though Eve was afraid of how quickly her feelings for Garrett were developing that he showed her that he was all in - he even left his job cause she made him realize that he didn't want to do a job he didn't like anymore.

The Hannah Montana-esque vibe of this book was everything!! Also, the Google calendar invites throughout this book made me smile so hard because they were just so cute! I loved how both of them recorded an album together 🥺💗

I just know that I will definitely be reading the next book in the series cause I fell in love with Marja's writing 🫶🏼

Thank you so much Marja for the ARC 💗

I tried so SO hard to love this book, but it’s just so boring. At 58%, which is over halfway through the book, absolutely nothing is happening. Like literally NADA. Garrett and Evelyn have gone through the same motions every. single. day, just a little different. I’m honestly so bored and it makes me so sad bc I had such high hopes for this book. When they say this is a slow burn they mean a slowwwwww burnnnnnn bc at this point they JUST started to flirt and they only kissed for show. Like honestly they seem like they don’t really like eachother which is so different from their inner monologue. Like on the inside they kinda like eachother, but on the outside they don’t show it AT ALL!!! Like yes a slow burn is supposed to be like that, but I honestly detect no chemistry between them. Eve’s best friends just came to town and honestly that whole trope line has me not only confused, but embarrassed for her all at the same time bc it’s so awkward. I honestly was so excited to receive this as an arc and wanted to love it so bad, but I just can’t read anymore bc I’m so bored.

I was so grateful to receive an ARC for this book! I really enjoyed it. The premise was so fun, very Hannah Montana vibes, and I loved that. The romance was very addictive too! And the side characters were all so vibrant I found myself always wanting to see more of them and know their own little stories.

Overall, such a fun and cozy read. I adored the small-town aspect of it all too.
