Rosemary Bailey is an award-winning travel writer and journalist, born in Halifax, Yorkshire. She has been based in the French Pyrenees for many years, and has written a trilogy of books about a region she has grown to love and know intimately.
While there are definitely criticisms to be made of this book, I really loved it. I thought Bailey managed her own position in the story well, accepting that she was going to have a bias but trying to remain fair to all involved. I thought this book was very touching - it made me think about religion and spirituality, about sexuality, about activism. It's well worth a read.
For all that she talks about her brother's sermons, and his poetry, I really wish she had quoted his words more. And I wish she wasn't so vague when she talked about how his parish reacted. But overall, it's really a touching story, and very well-told.
